Rhinoplasty in The Hague: what you need to know

The aim is a nose that blends with your features and works flawlessly. Before anything is decided in The Hague, the surgeon evaluates nose size, tip projection, the septum and nasal lining, then uses 3D modelling to show the future proportions. Rhinoplasty makes features more harmonious without losing individuality, and the predicted result is agreed with you in advance.

First visible results appear after about two weeks, and full healing takes around four months on average. The nose settles into its final shape over 1–1.5 years, so seeing your surgeon during this period matters. Until the end of the year, The Hague patients can have a free post-op consultation where the doctor evaluates the outcome, monitors recovery and answers questions.

Start with a free, non-binding consultation: you get an assessment of nasal anatomy, a 3D forecast and answers on recovery. If you decide to proceed, rhinoplasty costs $4,200 (≈ €3,750), including the operation, inpatient stay, follow-up visits and dressings, with a lifetime guarantee on the result. Patients from The Hague can send a request online or message a coordinator.

Ekaterina Ivanova

For a long time I was self-conscious about the length of my nose, until a friend who had had rhinoplasty recommended this clinic. At the very first consultation they set the date of surgery and explained every stage in detail. The rhinoplasty under general anaesthesia was performed by Mareta Meirieva: the swelling went down quickly, and after just a week my nose looked natural and neat. Modern equipment, attentive staff and appointments without delays made the whole process comfortable. I recommend the clinic to anyone who values professionalism and a quality result.

Rhinoplasty

Olga Vasilyeva

This was my first visit to the clinic, for rhinoseptoplasty, and to be honest I was very nervous. At the consultation they explained every stage of the operation and recovery in detail, which calmed me down straight away. The operation was performed by Mareta Meirieva: the swelling started to go down on the third day, and the result is visible to the naked eye. Everything inside is sterile and pleasant, the atmosphere inspires trust, and the staff are always responsive. I thank the clinic for the high level of service and the warm approach!

Rhinoplasty

Marina Samarina

Everything was first-class: clean, cosy and calm. Booking and choosing the right date was easy. The nose operation went smoothly and the nerve block was done perfectly: now I breathe freely without nasal drops! It is a real lifesaver for anyone tired of endless prescriptions and ineffective procedures. I recommend it to everyone who values professionalism and results.

Rhinoplasty

Viktoria Petrova

I recently had rhinoplasty and I am absolutely delighted. At the consultation they told me about every stage in detail, so I went into surgery fully prepared. The operation went smoothly: they straightened the bridge of my nose and made the nostrils symmetrical, and the shape came out very neat. The swelling lasted a little longer than I expected, but they explained straight away that full recovery takes more time. No unpleasant surprises, everything was within the normal range. I recommend the clinic to anyone looking for a confident result and an attentive attitude.

Breathing first: a nose operation and the air by the North Sea

The Hague is the largest Dutch city on the North Sea. It has 569,076 residents as of 1 January 2026, an eleven-kilometre coastline and a beach at Scheveningen of almost twelve kilometres. A nose operation planned from this city starts with the nose you breathe through on that coast. Before anything else, the doctor will ask whether the reason for the operation is the shape of the nose, the airflow, or both.

Rhinoplasty at City Medical Centre is described as a primary nasal operation that adjusts appearance and improves breathing when airflow is restricted. The suitability list names a deviated septum, marked breathing problems and nasal polyps. If breathing is your main complaint, you will probably be offered rhinoseptoplasty, a combined operation that corrects the septum and changes the shape of the nose. Septoplasty alone corrects the septum and keeps the outer contour as it is.

Before you write to a coordinator, keep a short diary for a couple of weeks. Note the days when one nostril closes, when you wake with a dry mouth, and when the air outdoors feels heavier. You can add the weather: a sea-facing promenade, a windy tram stop, a heated room in winter. This is not a diagnosis, and it does not replace the doctor's assessment. But it gives a precise answer to the question "when does it bother you?", and that is more useful than "sometimes".

Two groups on the contraindication list matter in a damp coastal setting. Inflammation of the ears, throat, nose or eyes is a reason to postpone the operation. Decompensated chronic diseases are another reason. If you have a cold in the days around the consultation, say so. The doctor may ask you to wait until the inflammation has passed, which is a medical decision, not a refusal.

Do not be surprised if the doctor asks about earlier injuries. A nose injury is on the list of cases where rhinoplasty addresses the problem, and a blow from years ago can still explain a crooked bridge or a narrowed passage. A photo from before the injury, if you have one, helps the doctor see what the nose looked like originally.

From the first photo to the 3D model: how an online start works

The first consultation is online and free. You send photos of your nose on WhatsApp or Telegram, and the coordinators answer 24/7, with a reply promised within 15 minutes. The doctor then assesses the anatomy of the nose, notes your wishes and, at the consultation, builds a 3D model of the expected result. You see the forecast before you commit to anything, and there is no obligation to go ahead.

Good photos make this stage faster, and the Dutch weather is a useful guide. On a grey day the light in most Hague apartments is flat and even, which suits a medical photo. Choose a spot with soft daylight from a window, not a lamp above your head. Take the face straight on, then from each side, then from slightly below. Remove glasses, tie the hair back and keep a neutral expression. If you wear glasses every day, add one extra photo with them on, so the doctor can see where the frames rest on the bridge.

The doctor names the final price and it is fixed in the contract after the consultation. So there is nothing to decide about money in the first message. The first step is just photos and a conversation.

Before the operation, a full set of laboratory tests is required: complete blood count, biochemistry, a coagulation panel, a chest X-ray and an X-ray of the sinuses. Preparation begins 21 days before rhinoplasty, and the plastic doctor gives you the list of required tests at the first appointment. Take that number into your calendar early. If you want the operation before a particular date, count back 21 days first, then adjust the rest.

A worked example: suppose you agree on an operation date of 30 November 2026. Counting back 21 days, preparation starts on 9 November 2026. The first check-up, at 7 days, falls on 7 December 2026. The 3-month check-up falls around the end of February 2027, and the 6-month one around the end of May 2027. Put these four dates into one calendar view, then look at what else is happening in your life around them.

Planning around the Dutch school calendar and the weather

The face is the part of the body that is on show at every school gate and every family event, so timing matters. The Dutch school holidays for 2026–2027 give you fixed points to plan around. The Christmas holiday runs from 19 December 2026 to 3 January 2027. The May holiday runs from 24 April to 2 May 2027. The summer holiday of 2027 falls between 10 July and 5 September, depending on the region: the north from 10 July to 22 August, the south from 24 July to 5 September.

Why do these dates matter? Many people link rhinoplasty to a break from school or work, and that is sensible, but it needs care. The operation lasts 1.5 to 3 hours under general anaesthesia, followed by one day at the clinic. Then comes the recovery with the splint and swelling. Recovery times shown in the clinic's materials are typical averages for general guidance, and your own anatomy determines the real course. So the doctor, not the holiday calendar, has the final say on when you are ready to be seen.

Here is one way to use the calendar. With the operation on 30 November 2026, the first check-up on 7 December 2026 comes before the Christmas holiday begins on 19 December. Any dressing questions can be settled while you are still in a normal routine. During the Christmas holiday itself, family gatherings are the situation where people look at your face closely. If the schedule feels tight, tell the coordinator, who can suggest an earlier or later slot. Do not choose a date only because it fits a holiday if it leaves no spare days before an important event.

The weather sets its own rhythm. The climate record for The Hague (the Valkenburg station, 1981–2010) gives an average maximum temperature of 6.4 °C in January and 21.6 °C in July. January is cold and probably heated indoors. July is mild and, by the sea, probably bright. Neither month is dangerous for a recovery, but each has its own nuisances, which the following sections cover. For monthly figures from coastal stations you can look at the KNMI climate data and compare the month you are considering with the neighbouring ones.

Splint, glasses and sunshine: small practical details

During recovery the nose carries a splint, and City Medical Centre lets you choose its colour. The options are purple, gold, green, light blue, pink, yellow, raspberry and carbon. It sounds like a detail, but in practice it affects how you feel at home during the first days. Someone who keeps a calm interior might pick carbon. Someone who wants the splint to look like a deliberate accessory might pick raspberry or gold. Decide in advance, so you do not have to think about it on the day.

Glasses need a separate conversation. A nose that has been reshaped is sensitive to anything resting on the bridge. If you wear glasses, ask the doctor at the consultation what to do about them during recovery: whether to switch to contact lenses for a while, or how to rest the frames. Do not improvise with tape or padding. The doctor knows exactly what was changed on your nose and what it can tolerate. Bring this question with the extra photo of yourself wearing glasses.

Sun is the next subject. July in The Hague has an average maximum of 21.6 °C, and the Scheveningen beach of almost twelve kilometres draws attention in the warm months. A reshaped nose and the skin around it should not be left unprotected in strong light. Ask the doctor what protection suits your recovery stage, and plan beach days around what you hear. The follow-up visits at 7 days, 3 months and 6 months give you fixed moments to ask whether a particular activity is fine yet.

In winter the question changes. January averages 6.4 °C at its warmest point of the day, so you will move between cold air outside and heated rooms inside. People who have just had a nasal operation often find that dry indoor air is more of a nuisance than the cold itself. Ask what the doctor advises for your nose in that setting and write the answer into your recovery plan. The coordinators remain available 24/7 on WhatsApp and Telegram, so a small worry in the evening does not have to wait until morning.

Insurance in the Netherlands: what to expect for a cosmetic operation

Everyone who lives or works in the Netherlands must take out standard health insurance, and hospital treatment is part of the standard package. That makes it tempting to assume a nose operation is covered. For a purely cosmetic one, it is not. According to the Consumentenbond, plastic surgery is reimbursed only when there is a medical necessity, and cosmetic procedures are not paid from the basic insurance. A supplementary policy also pays only when there is a medical necessity.

So the first honest question for your own insurer is: does my case count as medically necessary? A deviated septum with marked breathing problems is a medical question, while a wish to change the shape of the bridge is an aesthetic one. A combined operation such as rhinoseptoplasty touches both. The clinic's doctor can explain what part of the plan addresses breathing, but whether any part is reimbursed is decided by your insurer and your policy, not by the clinic. Ask your insurer in writing before you plan on any reimbursement.

Other Dutch reimbursement rules show how strict the logic is. For stomach reduction, the insurers' conditions ask for a referral from the GP, a documented intensive lifestyle programme and an assessment by a team of specialists. That is a different field, but it illustrates the pattern: reimbursement follows a documented medical pathway, not a personal wish. Do not assume the same exemption exists for a nose operation. Check the conditions of your own policy.

Practically, then, treat the operation as a self-funded decision unless your insurer confirms otherwise in writing. The first consultation is free, and the doctor names the final price afterwards and sets it in the contract, so you can compare that with your own budget before you reserve a date. Your surgery date is reserved once the deposit is paid, by card at the clinic or online by bank transfer, and the terms are confirmed in the contract for medical services.

Recovery over a year and who is beside you

The recovery programme is structured. After the operation you receive a recovery plan, and check-ups at 7 days, 3 months and 6 months help monitor how the nose is healing. Consultations with the doctor remain free for a year afterwards, so the monitoring stretches across the whole first year, including a full cycle of Dutch seasons: a damp autumn, a cold winter, a bright spring and a mild summer.

That matters because a nose does not look final on the day the splint comes off. Swelling settles gradually, and the doctor judges the result across the stages, not in a single week. If you are comparing the way it looks in a cold January wind with how it looked in mild July light, remember that those are different conditions. Take a photo in the same spot, in the same kind of light, at every check-up. This makes a before-and-after comparison honest, and it gives the doctor material to work with.

Three coordinators accompany you in turn. One answers questions before the first consultation and explains each step of preparation, including reminders about tests. Another is with you from booking to discharge, helping with documents and keeping in touch during the day at the clinic. The third supports you through recovery, answers questions and books the follow-up visits. All of them answer on WhatsApp and Telegram round the clock, which suits the evening hours when a worry about a dressing or a splint tends to show up.

There is also a Telegram community of patients, where you can speak directly with people who have been through it. Ask them practical things: how they managed glasses, how they planned around a family event, how the splint colour felt in daily life. Their answers are personal experience, not medical instruction, so bring anything medical back to your doctor.

Finally, one situation to keep in mind: revision rhinoplasty. It is a repeat correction after an unsuccessful or partly successful operation, performed no earlier than a year after the primary one. If a first operation was done elsewhere and you are unhappy, send photos and a short description. The doctor will say whether a revision makes sense and when.

Is a nose operation covered by Dutch basic health insurance?

For a cosmetic operation, no. The Consumentenbond states that plastic surgery is reimbursed only where there is a medical necessity, and that cosmetic procedures are not paid from the basic insurance. A supplementary policy also pays only for medical necessity. If part of your problem is breathing, for example a deviated septum, ask your insurer in writing how it assesses your case before you rely on any reimbursement.

Do I need to have health insurance in the Netherlands before I plan a rhinoplasty?

Everyone living or working in the Netherlands must have standard health insurance, and hospital treatment is part of that package. Rhinoplasty at City Medical Centre is a self-funded decision when it is cosmetic, but the insurance matters for everything around it, such as a visit to your GP if you have a cold or sinus complaint before the operation. Mention any such complaint to the coordinator, because inflammation of the nose, ears, throat or eyes is a reason for postponing.

How should I plan the operation around Dutch school holidays?

Start with the fixed dates: the Christmas holiday is 19 December 2026 to 3 January 2027, the May holiday is 24 April to 2 May 2027, and the summer holiday of 2027 falls between 10 July and 5 September, with the north from 10 July to 22 August and the south from 24 July to 5 September. The operation takes 1.5 to 3 hours under general anaesthesia, followed by one day at the clinic, and the first check-up is at 7 days. If the operation were on 30 November 2026, that check-up would be on 7 December 2026, before the Christmas holiday. The doctor decides what recovery looks like for you, so leave some spare days.

When should I start preparing for a date at the end of November 2026?

Preparation begins 21 days before rhinoplasty. For an operation on 30 November 2026, that is 9 November 2026. The doctor gives you the list of tests at the first appointment. Before the operation you need a complete blood count, biochemistry, a coagulation panel, a chest X-ray and an X-ray of the sinuses. Ask the coordinator to send you the list early so you can book the tests in good time.

Does the cold, damp coastal weather affect the choice of month?

It affects your comfort more than the medical plan. In The Hague the average maximum temperature is 6.4 °C in January and 21.6 °C in July (Valkenburg, 1981–2010). Winter means moving between cold air and heated rooms, and summer means bright light near a beach of almost twelve kilometres. Ask the doctor at the consultation how to handle dry indoor air, sun and, if you wear them, glasses during recovery. These are individual matters, so the answer depends on your case.

Can I wear glasses after rhinoplasty?

This is for the doctor to decide, because it depends on what was done to your nose. At the consultation, say that you wear glasses and send one photo with them on. The doctor will explain what to do with the frames during recovery. Do not improvise with padding or tape. The check-ups at 7 days, 3 months and 6 months are good moments to ask again.

How do I send photos from home if the light is poor?

Use soft daylight from a window rather than a lamp above your head, and avoid strong shadows under the nose. Take the face straight on, from each side and slightly from below, with the hair tied back and a neutral expression. Send them on WhatsApp or Telegram; the coordinators answer 24/7. At the consultation the doctor builds a 3D model of the expected result, so the photos only need to be clear and consistent.

What if I had a nose operation before and want it corrected?

That is called revision rhinoplasty, a repeat correction after an unsuccessful or partly successful operation. It is performed no earlier than a year after the primary one. Send photos and a short description of what bothers you. The doctor will say at the consultation whether a revision is appropriate and when it could be planned. Your own anatomy and the previous operation determine the real extent of correction.
