What is liposuction
and who is it for?

Liposuction is surgery that takes excess subcutaneous fat out of problem zones. It does not make you lose weight and does not replace diet or exercise. What it does is targeted contouring — removing thigh saddlebags, a sagging belly and fat on the back, flanks, arms or chin.

It suits those who have a normal weight and an active life but still hold fat in specific areas. Importantly, fat cells taken from treated zones do not regrow, so a steady lifestyle keeps the result for a long time.

Liposuction techniques at City Medical Centre

Tumescent (classic) liposuction

Step one is injecting a special solution — saline with lidocaine, adrenaline and several other agents — into the treatment area. It loosens the fat and tightens the vessels, keeping blood loss minimal and removal gentle. Then the fat emulsion is removed through a thin cannula using vacuum.

Swelling and bruising after surgery are almost absent, and recovering is much easier than with a conventional procedure.

VASER liposuction (ultrasound)

Before vacuum removal, fat cells are broken down by ultrasound. The method is ideal for defining pronounced muscle relief — athletic abs — and body contouring.

It also suits delicate areas.

How the surgery goes: from consultation to result

Surgeon consultation

The doctor listens to your wishes, examines you and assesses the fat deposits, ruling out contraindications. City Medical Centre also prescribes a hormonal screening, useful for predicting the long-term result.

Pre-operative tests

Pre-op tests: blood (complete count, coagulation panel, biochemistry, infections — HIV, hepatitis, syphilis), ECG, chest X-ray and, if needed, a GP consultation.

All tests can be done at the clinic with no waiting.

Preparation

Stop medications that affect blood clotting 2 weeks before. Quit alcohol and smoking a week before for faster healing. Eat your last meal 8 hours before.

Surgery day

You see the surgeon, who marks the areas, and the compression garments are fitted. Anesthesia can be local or general depending on the scope.
Surgery time: 1 hour for small areas, up to 3–4 hours for a combined procedure.

Waking up and monitoring

Hospital stay: one day under observation after general anesthesia, or discharge 3–4 hours after surgery with local anesthesia.

Recovery

Compression garments are worn for 30–45 days. First results show in 3–4 weeks as swelling goes down. The final result is assessed at 3 months, once the skin has fully tightened.

Recovery after liposuction

Unlike a conventional procedure, tumescent liposuction allows a much shorter recovery — most patients are at work again within 3–7 days. Some mild swelling and a raised temperature in the first week are possible; this is a normal response to surgery. You wear compression garments for 30–45 days so they fix the new contours and speed up tissue recovery. The first month rules out the bathhouse, sauna, pool and intense sport. We recommend lymphatic drainage massage, pressotherapy and a gradual return to activity for the best result and faster recovery. First changes become visible in 3–4 weeks, and the final result at 3 months.

Liposuction: frequently asked questions

Liposuction in Lusaka: a short guide

Which zones can be treated? The abdomen and flanks are the most requested, for women and men alike. Thighs (outer and inner), back and lower back, arms and shoulders, chin and neck, knees and the male chest are also corrected. Several areas can be done in one operation, saving recovery time and budget, which is why patients from Lusaka rarely limit themselves to a single zone.

Recovery after tumescent liposuction is much shorter than after a conventional procedure. Most patients return to work within 3–7 days. Mild swelling and a raised temperature in the first week are a normal response. Compression garments are worn for 30–45 days to fix the new contours. For those in Lusaka, lymphatic drainage massage and pressotherapy are recommended to speed things up.

Liposuction in Lusaka costs from $1,200 (≈ ZMW 24,000). The exact amount depends on which areas you want to correct — abdomen, flanks, thighs, back, arms, chin or knees — and on whether they are combined in one operation. The surgeon calculates it individually after the examination. The first consultation is free, and a coordinator will book it once you leave a request.
