Beard transplant

FUE, no incisions and no stitches

A surgeon marking the beard line before a transplant at City Medical Centre

Grafts come from the donor area at the back of the head and are placed through micro-punctures of about 1 mm, leaving no scars. The doctor discusses the shape with you before surgery, taking your facial features into account. The transplanted hair grows for life, and the beard can be trimmed and styled as usual.

Eyebrow transplant

FUE, no incisions and no stitches

A surgeon marking the eyebrow shape before a transplant at City Medical Centre

At the initial consultation the surgeon draws the shape of the eyebrow: you look through references together and your facial features shape the design. The hairs are implanted at the right angle, so the eyebrows look natural. It also helps where hairs stopped growing after years of plucking.

I am sharing my experience, because before the operation I went through a pile of reviews myself and was looking for real stories. I had a beard transplant six months ago. Honestly, in the first days after the procedure I felt a little jittery: my face looked unfamiliar, there was slight swelling and small scabs. In the first couple of months the hair partly fell out, as the doctor had warned. But now the result truly makes me very happy) From about the 4th month active, even growth began. The transplanted hair took very well, the beard now looks as natural as possible, no bald patches are left. The beard became much thicker and denser, with the shape I had thought about for a long time. All in all, I recommend the clinic, the doctor was polite and explained everything 👍 The result is definitely worth it!

Frequent questions

We tell what people
ask before booking

People often say hair implants, but no artificial hair is used. In a hair transplant the doctor moves your own follicles (grafts) from the donor area to thinning or bald areas using FUE or DHI.

City Medical Centre doctors

Yes — patients from other cities and countries are welcome, and you can start with a free online consultation.

Pricing starts from $2,200 (≈ CA$3,150) for FUE, $2,500 (≈ CA$3,600) for DHI, and $2,700 (≈ CA$3,850) for combined DHI+FUE. The exact figure is confirmed for free after a graft count and written into the contract.

The surgery takes a single day, and you go home the same day.

It helps with stable pattern hair loss and a receding hairline when there are enough donor grafts. Some types of alopecia need treatment first; the doctor checks this at the consultation.

The surgery is performed under local anaesthesia, so it's painless.

FUE is the classic method: grafts are harvested with tweezers, with no cuts or stitches. DHI implants grafts without channels, using a Choi pen. A combined method harvests grafts by FUE and implants them with the DHI pen.

The number of grafts is assessed for free by the doctor, based on how much donor hair you have.

Expect 0–10 days to heal, then normal shedding of transplanted hairs at 2–4 weeks. Growth begins around 3–4 months, density builds by 6–9 months, and the final look appears at 12–18 months.

Your procedure includes a lifetime hair-growth guarantee under contract.

What a patient in Ottawa should know about the procedure

The method suits a patient in Ottawa because it asks so little: FUE and DHI, no cuts, no stitches, local anaesthesia and one day of your time. Graft survival is 98-100 %, and a price from $2,200 (≈ CA$3,150) is put into the contract after a free count of the grafts.

For someone in Ottawa the whole beginning is online and free of charge: photos of the thinning area go to the doctor, who looks at them and counts the grafts. The clinic keeps in touch 24/7, in the hours you are actually awake.

Healing fits into 0-10 days, and at 2-4 weeks the transplanted hairs shed exactly as the protocol predicts. Growth begins at 3-4 months, density comes at 6-9 and the final result at 12-18. Check-ups at 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months with photo tracking by a personal coordinator and a lifetime growth guarantee.

A lumber camp that became a capital almost by accident

Ottawa began in 1800 as a lumber settlement founded by a New Englander, Philemon Wright, on the north bank of the river, in what later grew into Gatineau on the Quebec side. The south bank took off only after land speculator John Le Breton bought a lot there in the 1820s, betting on where the British military would dig its new Rideau Canal. Bytown, named after the canal's chief engineer Colonel John By, was laid out in 1826 and had about 1,000 residents by the time the canal opened in 1832.

Bytown became the city of Ottawa in 1855, and two years later Queen Victoria chose it as capital of the Province of Canada: remote enough to defend, small enough to escape the mob violence that had burned earlier capitals, and linked by water to both Montreal and Kingston. In 1900 a chimney fire in neighbouring Hull jumped the river and destroyed roughly a fifth of Ottawa's buildings, one of several disasters the young capital absorbed.

Timber paid for much of that growth. From the 1850s lumber barons lined the Ottawa River with sawmills, and by the early 20th century they were turning out 613 million board feet a year; a railway to the Saint Lawrence opened in 1854, and by 1886 the city was tied into the transcontinental network. Parliament Hill went up on land the government already owned, picked because officials knew they would one day need a home for parliament.

The 2021 census counted 1,017,449 residents, making Ottawa the fourth-largest municipality in Canada. Since a 2001 amalgamation one council governs 24 wards, and federal administration remains the backbone of the local economy.

Skateway winters, sticky summers and a healing scalp

Ottawa has a warm-summer humid continental climate and sits in Canada's plant hardiness zone 5a. July and August bring warm, muggy days; from December the cold settles in for months, with regular snow. The surest local gauge is the Rideau Canal Skateway, 7.8 kilometres of naturally frozen ice recognised as the world's largest skating rink. It usually opens in late December or January, shuts in late February or March and logs around a million visits a season, with the Winterlude festival built around it.

The numbers behind that reputation are stark. January, the coldest month, averages a minimum of -14.3°C, most days from December to February stay below freezing, and about 232 cm of snow falls in a typical year, almost all of it between December and March; on roughly 16 nights a year the thermometer drops below -20°C. Summer swings the other way: July averages a maximum of 27°C, about 15 days a year pass 30°C, humidity is highest in summer, and most of the city's 23 or so thunderstorm days fall then. Spring and autumn are the unpredictable seasons, when a May night can freeze and a September afternoon can top 30°C.

None of this moves the medical calendar. The scalp needs 0-10 days to heal over; the implanted hairs shed between 2-4 weeks while the follicles stay put; first new growth appears at 3-4 months, density you can see at 6-9 months, and the finished hairline at 12-18 months.

What Ottawa's seasons change is the aftercare routine in the first weeks. In Skateway months a loose, clean hat is protection against wind chill as much as against sun, and furnace-dried indoor air draws moisture out of healing skin, so the moisturising the doctor prescribes deserves more attention than it would in May. A procedure in January puts the 3-4 month growth phase into April or May, just as the canal thaws; one in July means the first fortnight is about heat and humidity instead, with the finished result due 12-18 months after that.

Ottawa's sunniest stretch, June to August, is also when a freshly treated scalp is most exposed, so the city's roughly 2,080 hours of annual sunshine are worth treating as a scheduling question rather than a medical one. In the shoulder seasons, layering matters more than the hat: a cold morning and a warm afternoon in the same May day are common, and a scalp that is kept neither chilled nor sweating heals more comfortably.

The Ottawa Hospital and the region's trauma care

Public hospital care in Ottawa runs mainly through The Ottawa Hospital, a 1,186-bed system created in 1998 when the Grace, Ottawa Riverside, Ottawa General and Ottawa Civic hospitals merged into one non-profit teaching network affiliated with the University of Ottawa.

Its Civic Campus houses the University of Ottawa Heart Institute and is one of only two Level I trauma centres serving Eastern Ontario and southern Quebec; the other, for younger patients, is the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario. For anyone living in the region, that puts emergency care, specialist referrals and diagnostic imaging inside one large publicly funded network, staffed in part by clinicians who trained in the university's own programmes.

The CPSO: one register and a clear complaints route

The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario licenses every doctor permitted to practise in the province and keeps a public register. Searching a doctor's name shows whether the licence is active and whether restrictions or findings are attached, which tells a patient more in two minutes than any clinic brochure.

The college draws its authority from three Ontario statutes: the Regulated Health Professions Act, the Health Professions Procedural Code beneath it, and the Medicine Act, 1991. A complaint can be lodged online or by phone through its 'Complaints and Concerns' page; the CPSO suggests first raising the problem with the physician where that is realistic. It investigates on the public's behalf and can discipline doctors for professional misconduct or incompetence, which makes self-regulation in Ontario a working safeguard rather than a slogan.

Once the register check is done, the consultation is where experience shows. Ask how the donor zone will be mapped, how many grafts the available supply can realistically yield, and how growth will be photographed and compared across the following year.

What OHIP leaves out

Ontario's own guidance on what OHIP pays for names cosmetic surgery among the excluded services, wherever in the province it is done. A hair transplant chosen to change appearance, rather than to repair an injury or treat a disease, falls squarely into that category, no matter how many years someone has carried an Ontario health card.

That makes the figure fixed at the consultation the entire bill: preparation, the procedure itself and the year of follow-up reviews, with nothing to claim back from the province afterwards.

Can I talk things through from Ottawa before I commit?

Yes. A coordinator replies on Telegram and WhatsApp around the clock, and the donor area is assessed and your graft count estimated at no charge before any decision.

Will an Ottawa winter slow my recovery?

No. The stages run the same in January as in July; in Skateway weather a loose hat guards against wind chill, and dry furnace air makes the prescribed moisturiser more important.

Which month makes the most sense?

Medically, none is better. Some people like early winter so the first fortnight passes indoors; others steer clear of July humidity for the same reason.

The new hairs fell out after three weeks. Is something wrong?

No. Shedding of the implanted hairs between 2-4 weeks is expected; the follicles remain, and new growth starts at 3-4 months.

When will friends and colleagues notice?

Usually once density shows at 6-9 months; the hairline is judged as finished at 12-18 months.

How do I check a doctor's licence in Ontario?

Search the name on the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario register, which shows licence status and any restrictions.

Where does a complaint about a doctor go?

To the CPSO, online or by phone through its 'Complaints and Concerns' page; it can investigate and discipline a doctor for misconduct or incompetence.

Does OHIP cover any of the cost?

No. Ontario's guidance lists cosmetic surgery among the services OHIP does not pay for.
