The recovery period after liposuction

After tumescent liposuction, recovery is much shorter than after a conventional procedure. Most patients return to work within 7–10 days. In the first week, mild swelling and a raised temperature are possible — a normal response to surgery. Compression garments are worn for 30–45 days: they fix the new contours and speed up tissue recovery. In the first month, bathhouse, sauna, pool and intense sport are off-limits. For the best result and faster recovery we recommend lymphatic drainage massage, pressotherapy and a gradual return to activity. First visible changes show 2 weeks after surgery, when the main swelling subsides; the final result forms in 3–6 months.

Post-op check-ups

After 7 days, at 3 months and at 6 months. Until the end of the year, get a post-surgery consultation with your surgeon to review results and get more information, at the clinic's expense.

What Cordoba residents ask about liposuction

Liposuction is minimally invasive: fat is removed through micro-incisions of just a few millimetres that usually need no stitches and become barely visible once healed. Before surgery the surgeon assesses skin tone and elasticity, because firm skin tightens on its own along the new contours. If you are considering liposuction in Cordoba with stretch marks or reduced tone, preparatory treatments may be recommended.

Follow-up does not end at discharge. The surgeon stays in touch throughout recovery, and planned check-ups take place at 7 days and at 3 months. Until the end of the year, a post-op follow-up consultation with the surgeon is at the clinic's expense, to review the result and answer questions. Patients from Cordoba also get advice on returning gradually to activity.

If you are comparing liposuction prices in Cordoba, check what the figure depends on: the number of zones, their size and the chosen technique. Here the starting price is $1,200 (≈ €1,100), the final sum is set after an examination and nothing hidden is added. Hormonal screening before surgery and surgeon support through recovery are part of the approach. Book a free consultation to get your plan.

A river city of 325,000 and what contouring looks like when you plan it from home

Cordoba sits in the Guadalquivir depression, with the river crossing the city from east-northeast to west-southwest along its middle course, mostly on the right bank. The municipality counts 324,902 inhabitants (2024) and ranks twelfth in Spain; the Spanish-language reference gives 323,262 for 2025 from the national statistics institute, and the metropolitan area is put at 354,202. The municipality is also very large, about 1,253 km2, so people in the city live at very different distances from one another and from the centre. That detail matters more than it seems when you think about a procedure with several follow-up contacts.

This is exactly why the first stage of liposuction for patients from Cordoba is online. You send photos on WhatsApp or Telegram, a coordinator answers round the clock, and the doctor assesses the areas you want to change. The first consultation is free and carries no obligation to book. You can do it in the evening after work, between lectures, or on a quiet Sunday, because the coordinators work 24/7 and the reply normally arrives within 15 minutes.

Liposuction is aimed at stubborn local fat that does not respond to diet and exercise. The areas the doctor can plan are the abdomen and waist, the outer and inner thighs, the back including the lower back, the arms, the chin and neck, the knees, and in men the fat component of gynecomastia. A single operation can combine several of these zones, for example the abdomen and flanks together, or the inner and outer thighs. At the consultation the doctor looks at the distribution of fat, the tone and elasticity of the skin, and your wishes, and only then proposes the scope of surgery.

Two techniques are used: tumescent (classic) liposuction, where a special solution loosens the fat so it can be removed through a thin cannula, and VASER, where ultrasound breaks down fat cells before vacuum removal. Tumescent is chosen for removal of local fat with minimal blood loss in the abdomen, flanks, thighs, back, arms and chin. VASER is chosen when the aim is a defined muscle relief, for example athletic abdominal definition, or for delicate areas. The figures for each technique are averages given for guidance, and the doctor confirms the real scope and rehabilitation after seeing your anatomy.

Fat is removed through micro-punctures of 3–5 mm, which usually need no stitches, so the marks are small once healed. The operation lasts from 1 hour for a small area to 3–4 hours for a combined procedure, under local or general anaesthesia. All of this is explained during the free consultation, so you arrive at the decision with a clear plan and a price fixed in the contract before surgery.

Summer highs of 37 °C, winter highs of 15 °C: when a compression garment is easier to live with

The climate figures for Cordoba come from the long-term weather station record for 1991–2020. July and August are the hottest months, with average daily highs of 37.1 °C and 37.0 °C and average lows of 19.1 °C and 19.6 °C. January is the coldest, with a mean high of 15.2 °C and a mean low of 3.7 °C. The recorded extremes are 46.9 °C, reached on 13 July 2017 and again on 14 August 2021, and −8.2 °C on 28 January 2005. Relative humidity averages 38 per cent in July and 78 per cent in December.

Why does this matter for liposuction? After the operation a compression garment is worn for 30–45 days. It fixes the new contours and speeds up tissue recovery, and it is fitted on the day of surgery. A garment worn against the skin is a different experience at a January high of 15 °C than at a July high above 37 °C. Neither season rules the operation out, and the doctor decides on medical grounds, but you can plan your own comfort. This is a practical observation, not a medical figure: in hot weather many patients prefer breathable clothing over the garment, a cool indoor place for the first days and careful planning of errands in the cooler hours.

Take a worked example. If an operation took place in mid-November 2026, the 30–45 days of the garment would run to roughly mid-December or the very end of December, when the average December rainfall is the highest of the year at 90.7 mm and daytime temperatures are mild. The first changes show at 2 weeks, once swelling subsides, and the final result forms in 3–6 months, so the finished contour would be judged in spring or early summer 2027. If instead the operation took place in early June 2027, the whole garment period would fall into the hottest part of the year, with July averaging 372 hours of sun and almost no rain (0.5 mm).

None of this means winter is automatically better. The first month has its own rules whatever the weather: no bathhouse, sauna, pool or intense sport, no alcohol or tanning beds for at least a month, and in the first 7 days no physical exertion or heavy lifting. The city has 2,990 hours of sun a year, 66 per cent of those possible, so a plan that avoids tanning beds is one thing, and a plan for how the treated areas meet strong sunlight is another. Ask the doctor about it at the consultation and follow the individual recommendations given after surgery.

The best way to use the climate figures is as one more input for choosing the date. At the consultation, tell the coordinator what your calendar and the season look like; the date is reserved only after you confirm the plan, and the terms are fixed in the contract for medical services.

Weight, obesity statistics and the line between contouring and weight loss

According to the European Health Survey 2020 run by Spain's national statistics institute, 16.0 per cent of adults aged 18 and over in Spain live with obesity (16.5 per cent of men and 15.5 per cent of women), 37.6 per cent are overweight, and 53.6 per cent are above the weight considered normal. These are national figures, not figures for Cordoba, and they are useful mainly as context: a large share of adults are dealing with weight in one way or another, and liposuction is not a tool for that problem.

The doctor states this plainly. Liposuction is not a weight-loss method. It targets local fat deposits that resist diet and exercise and reshapes the contours of the body. If your weight is unstable, the first step is a nutritionist or an endocrinologist, not an operation. Endocrine obesity and decompensated diabetes are among the conditions for which liposuction is not suitable, and so are blood coagulation disorders, serious heart, kidney or liver disease, cancer, pregnancy and the breastfeeding period, and age under 18.

Weight stability matters for keeping the result. Removed fat cells do not come back, but the cells that remain can grow if you gain weight. A strict diet is not required after surgery, yet a balanced diet and regular physical activity are recommended for a lasting result. Before surgery an endocrinologist rules out hormonal causes of the fat deposits, and a hormonal screening is ordered at the planning stage because it helps predict the long-term result.

For adults with a much higher body mass, Spain's common portfolio of national health services describes a different path. Regulation RD 1030/2006 includes the adjustable gastric band for adults with a BMI above 40 kg/m2, or above 35 with a significant associated condition, after conservative alternatives such as diet, exercise and behaviour change have failed. That is a bariatric indication, not a body-contouring one, and the same coordinator can explain where the two differ if your questions are about weight rather than shape.

Everyday health context also plays a role in planning. The same survey lists osteoarthritis as the third most common diagnosed chronic problem in people aged 15 and over (14.4 per cent), after high blood pressure (19.0 per cent) and high cholesterol (15.3 per cent), with low back pain at 13.7 per cent. If joint or back complaints limit how active you can be, say so at the consultation. The recovery plan includes lymphatic drainage massage, pressotherapy and a gradual return to activity, and the doctor can adapt the pace to your situation.

Waiting lists in the public system and why aesthetic contouring is arranged separately

Patients often ask whether a procedure like this can be done through the public health system in Andalusia. The short answer from the legal text is no. Regulation RD 1030/2006, article 5.4.a.4, states that techniques with a purpose of mere aesthetic or cosmetic improvement are not funded, and that aesthetic procedures unrelated to an accident, illness or congenital malformation are excluded from specialised care. The same regulation includes breast prostheses and skin expanders as reconstructive implants, but not when they are used in aesthetic surgery with no connection to accident, disease or congenital malformation.

The waiting-list figures give useful context for why people look for another route when they need a plastic surgery specialist at all. On 31 December 2025, the national health system reported 853,509 patients waiting for an operation, an average wait of 121 days, with 21.6 per cent waiting more than six months (the initial publication was later followed by a correction note concerning data from Castilla-La Mancha). Plastic Surgery had the longest average wait of any specialty, 269 days, ahead of Neurosurgery at 172 days.

Andalusia stood at 199,950 patients in structural surgical waiting (23.51 per 1,000 inhabitants) with an average of 173 days, against the national average of 121. In outpatient care, 84.42 of every 1,000 people were waiting for a first specialist consultation, with a mean wait of 102 days; Traumatology had the longest consultation wait, 132 days. In Andalusia, 42,247 patients were waiting for Traumatology surgery, with an average of 187 days. For hip prostheses the average was 98 days, with 13.7 per cent beyond the 180-day limit, and for knee prostheses 105 days, with 15.9 per cent.

These numbers describe public care for medical needs, not cosmetic liposuction, and they should not be read as a promise or a comparison of quality. What they show is simple: if your goal is purely aesthetic, it falls outside public funding, and the time you spend should go to a clear plan rather than a queue. With City Medical Centre the first conversation is free, the doctor tells you honestly if your case can be solved without surgery, and if it can, you do not spend money for nothing.

If a health condition is involved, for example if you suspect that a lump is not simply fat, or you have a medical need for reconstruction, speak to your family doctor in the public system first. That route is outside what an aesthetic consultation covers, and the coordinator will say so directly rather than steer you.

Fitting recovery around lectures, the Feria and the Patios

Cordoba has two universities: the University of Cordoba, founded in 1972, with about 21,000 enrolled students, and Loyola Andalucía University. If you study or work in a university setting, the academic calendar is a natural planning tool. Most patients return to work within 7–10 days after tumescent liposuction, but in the first week mild swelling and a raised temperature are possible and are a normal response to surgery. A heavy exam period or a long teaching schedule is better kept away from that first week.

The city's calendar has fixed anchors. The Feria of Our Lady of Health takes place in the last full week of May, and the Festival of the Cordoba Patios was declared UNESCO World Heritage in 2012, with its centenary marked in 2021. If you want to be at a comfortable stage of recovery for an event like these, count backwards. Consider an operation in early January 2027: the garment would be worn for 30–45 days, until about mid-February; the interim result is assessed at 1.5–2 months, in late February or early March; swelling and bruising disappear by weeks 4–5; and the final contour forms 3–6 months after surgery, between April and July. By late May the main swelling would be long gone, though the final shape may still be settling.

Check-ups are built in: after 7 days, at 3 months and at 6 months, with progress monitored remotely by photos in between. Dressings and the personal coordinator on call are part of the plan. If you plan the operation for early January 2027, those check-ups would fall in mid-January, early April and early July. Your coordinator helps put them in your calendar so that they do not collide with examinations, work deadlines or family dates.

Avoid scheduling the first month around activities that are off the list: pool, sauna, bathhouse and intense sport. Outdoor walking is a gradual return to activity that the doctor will describe individually; do not assume a pace on your own. The recommendation of lymphatic drainage massage and pressotherapy also deserves a slot in the diary.

One more practical point: general anaesthesia means a stay of one day in a comfortable ward under round-the-clock nursing care, with meals included, while local anaesthesia means going home 3–4 hours after surgery, or the same day. Ask your coordinator which is expected for the areas you have chosen, so that you can arrange who will be with you in the first hours.

From a photo message to a plan: how the online consultation unfolds

Step one is a short message on WhatsApp or Telegram with photos of the areas you want to treat. A coordinator replies, and the doctor gives a free assessment. You then get the scope and the price in writing; the price is fixed in the contract before any booking, and the total covers everything scheduled: dressings, post-operative check-ups, the personal coordinator on call, compression garments fitted on the day of surgery, the stay in a hospital ward with meals, individual recovery recommendations and remote progress monitoring by photos.

Step two is the surgical plan. The doctor listens to your wishes, assesses the fat deposits and skin tone, and rules out contraindications. Good skin tone and elasticity favour liposuction; if tone is reduced or there are stretch marks, the specialists recommend preparatory treatments that improve the skin in advance. Liposuction is suitable for local fat that resists diet and exercise, uneven subcutaneous fat, disrupted body proportions, changes after childbirth or weight loss, and the fat component of gynecomastia in men.

Preparation is concrete. Stop smoking, alcohol and medicines that affect clotting, such as aspirin, 7–10 days before liposuction. The pre-operative check-up includes blood tests (complete count, coagulation panel, biochemistry, infections), an ECG, a chest X-ray and, if needed, a GP consultation, along with an anaesthesiologist consultation. You receive all instructions after the first consultation.

On the day, the areas are marked and the compression garment is fitted. The operation takes from 1 hour for a small area to 3–4 hours for a combined procedure. Afterwards you either go home after 3–4 hours with local anaesthesia, or stay one day with general anaesthesia. Ask about cellulite honestly: liposuction does not change the skin structure that causes it, though improved contours often reduce its visible appearance.

If you are unsure, leave your number and the coordinator will call you back, and the doctor will tell you whether liposuction suits you. No operation needs to be booked for that. Until the end of the year, a post-surgery consultation to review results and get more information is offered at the clinic's expense.

Does the hot Cordoba summer make liposuction a bad idea?

Not by itself. The doctor decides on medical grounds, and heat is a comfort question rather than a ban. In July and August the average highs are about 37 °C, and the compression garment is worn for 30–45 days. Many patients plan an operation so that most of the garment period falls in cooler months, but you can discuss this with the coordinator and choose what suits your calendar.

Is winter in Cordoba a more convenient season for recovery?

Many find it more comfortable for the garment, since the January mean high is 15.2 °C and the mean low 3.7 °C. Autumn brings the most rain, with December at 90.7 mm, November at 79.2 mm and October at 78.7 mm. The first month still has the same restrictions: no pool, sauna, bathhouse or intense sport, and no alcohol or tanning beds for at least a month.

Can I have this procedure through the Andalusian public health system?

Procedures for mere aesthetic or cosmetic improvement are outside the common portfolio of services, according to RD 1030/2006. That is why aesthetic liposuction is arranged privately. If you have a medical problem, speak to your family doctor in the public system first; the coordinator will tell you when a question belongs there.

Do the long public waiting times affect how quickly I can start?

They do not apply to this consultation. For context, the average surgical wait in Andalusia was 173 days on 31 December 2025, and Plastic Surgery had the longest national wait at 269 days. With City Medical Centre the first online consultation is free, and the coordinator replies within 15 minutes, so the plan and dates are agreed with you before anything is booked.

Will liposuction help if I am among the over half of adults above normal weight?

Liposuction is not a weight-loss method. In Spain 53.6 per cent of adults are above normal weight, with 16.0 per cent living with obesity, according to the 2020 European Health Survey. If your weight is unstable, first see a nutritionist or endocrinologist. The doctor will tell you honestly at the consultation whether local contouring makes sense in your case.

What if my weight is closer to a bariatric indication?

The common portfolio describes the adjustable gastric band for adults with a BMI above 40 kg/m2, or above 35 with a significant associated condition, after conservative measures have failed. That belongs to bariatric surgery, not liposuction. Share your height and weight with the coordinator, and you will be told which direction is appropriate.

Can I time the operation so that I am recovered for the Feria in late May?

Count backwards. Swelling and bruising disappear by weeks 4–5, the interim result is seen at 1.5–2 months and the final one at 3–6 months. An operation in early January 2027 would give you the garment period finished by mid-February and a well-advanced result by late May, though the final shape may still be settling.

I study at one of the universities. When is the best moment for the first week of recovery?

Choose a period without exams or heavy deadlines. Most patients return to work within 7–10 days, and the first week may bring mild swelling and a raised temperature. Plan to avoid physical exertion and heavy lifting for 7 days. Check-ups at 7 days, 3 months and 6 months are easiest to attend if you set the dates early.

Do I need to be in the city for the first consultation?

No. The first step is online. Send photos on WhatsApp or Telegram, and a coordinator answers round the clock. The doctor gives a free assessment, names the final price in writing and explains the plan. Nothing is booked until you confirm the plan and the dates.

Which tests should I prepare for before the operation?

Blood tests (complete count, coagulation panel, biochemistry, infections), an ECG, a chest X-ray and, if needed, a GP consultation, plus an anaesthesiologist consultation. Stop smoking, alcohol and medicines affecting clotting, such as aspirin, 7–10 days before. You receive all instructions after the first consultation.
