What did Josie Gibson say about her liposuction?
This Morning presenter and former Big Brother winner Josie Gibson has talked openly about surgery for lipoedema, a condition in which fat builds up abnormally, usually in the legs and sometimes the arms. In March 2026 she had surgery on her arms, and in October 2026 she answered her followers’ questions on Instagram. The Sun quoted her on 8 October 2026: “My surgery was over £8,000 – everyone’s surgery is different. I had liposuction on my arms as well. So I had lipo and skin removal.”
She also said it was not her first operation: “I’ve had one lot of surgery on my legs, lipo on the bottom of my legs, and I need to go back three times but obviously there’s the cost and having the space in your diary.” About the recovery she said: “I kept three weeks free in the diary but I went back to work after 17 days and I felt fine. I couldn’t lift my arms above my head but other than that I felt well enough.” Earlier, in July 2026, she had shown the result in a post captioned “Showing off my new arms”, as The Sun reported.
That is what we rely on. Everything below about techniques, recovery and prices describes liposuction in general and the service at City Medical Centre, not her treatment, and it is not a description of how lipoedema should be treated in any individual case.
What her words tell us
Gibson described her surgery as a medical step rather than a beauty project: she said she had always felt something was not quite right with her body, and that the symptoms got worse as she got older.
She was also honest that the scars are visible and that she would rather have them than what she had before, and she said: “None of my surgeries have been painful, it’s uncomfortable but I would definitely do it again.”
Two practical points stand out. First, she planned the recovery time in advance and still could not lift her arms fully for a while — a realistic picture of what arm surgery means for daily life. Second, she spoke about several stages rather than one operation. Whether liposuction is suitable, how many areas can be treated at once and whether skin removal is needed are questions for the surgeon after an examination; the answer differs for ordinary fat deposits and for a condition such as lipoedema.

How liposuction is done today
Liposuction removes excess fat under the skin from areas that do not respond to diet and exercise: the abdomen, flanks, thighs, back, upper arms or chin. It is not a weight-loss method; it changes contours. City Medical Centre uses these techniques:
- Tumescent liposuction — a solution of saline with lidocaine and adrenaline is injected first. It loosens the fat and narrows the blood vessels, which reduces blood loss; the fat is then removed through a thin cannula.
- VASER liposuction (ultrasound-assisted) — fat cells are broken down with ultrasound before removal, which suits fine contouring.
How the fat is prepared
- Tumescent
- The solution loosens the tissue
- VASER
- Ultrasound breaks down the fat cells
Typical use
- Tumescent
- Classic contouring of one or several areas

- VASER

Incisions
- Tumescent

Compression garment
- Tumescent
- 30–45 days

An operation lasts from about an hour for small areas to three or four hours for a combined procedure. When loose skin remains, as on the upper arms after weight loss, the surgeon may discuss removing it as a separate or combined step.
Who it suits, and how to prepare
Liposuction suits people with local fat deposits that stay despite a normal weight and an active lifestyle, or changed body contours after pregnancy or weight loss. It is not suitable for people with severe chronic or mental illness or serious heart, kidney or liver disease; acute infections and skin inflammation in the area are temporary contraindications.
Before surgery the clinic arranges blood tests, an ECG and a chest X-ray. Medicines that affect blood clotting are stopped two weeks before (only as agreed with the doctor), alcohol and smoking a week before, and the last meal is eaten eight hours before the operation.
What recovery looks like
After local anaesthesia patients usually go home three to four hours after the operation; after general anaesthesia they stay one day under observation. Mild swelling and a raised temperature are possible in the first days. Most patients return to work within 7–10 days.
A compression garment is worn for 30–45 days, and sauna, swimming pools and intense sport are avoided during the first month. The first changes are visible after three to four weeks, and the final result forms in 3–6 months.

How recovery after liposuction usually goes
- Day of surgeryLocal or general anaesthesia; from about an hour for small areas to three or four hours for combined procedures.
- Same day or day 1Home three to four hours after local anaesthesia, or after one day of observation after general anaesthesia.
- Days 1–10Mild swelling is possible; most patients return to work within 7–10 days.
- Weeks 1–6Compression garment for 30–45 days; no sauna, pool or intense sport in the first month.
- Weeks 3–4First visible changes as the swelling subsides.
- Months 3–6The tissues adapt and the final result can be assessed.
