FAQ
Yes, bariatric surgery is the medical term for it. At City Medical Centre the main methods are sleeve gastrectomy (gastric sleeve) and gastric bypass; the surgeon chooses the method by your BMI and health.
Usually a BMI over 40, or over 35 with related health conditions. The surgeon confirms whether surgery suits you at the consultation.

Surgery is prescribed only when clear criteria are met
BMI is the principal gauge of how advanced obesity is, found by dividing body weight (kg) by height squared (m²). Typically, a BMI above 40 — or above 35 with serious related conditions — justifies surgery. Some patients with lower values are considered for surgery too, if non-surgical options have failed.
Many people confuse the two, but their goals are fundamentally different. Bariatric surgery is a medical treatment for obesity and related diseases. It changes how the digestive tract works, addressing the causes of excess weight and metabolism. Plastic surgery reshapes the body's outer contours; it does not treat obesity or affect metabolism.
Four main types of bariatric surgery are performed at City Medical Centre: sleeve gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, mini gastric bypass (MGB) and SADI-S duodeno-ileal bypass. Each is selected individually based on BMI, related conditions and patient goals.
Modern laparoscopic technique allows the operation through 4 small punctures of 5 to 15 mm. Cosmetic sutures make the marks almost invisible when fully healed.
The recovery timeline depends on your activity. Office work: after 2–4 weeks. Physical work: after 1.5 months. Sport and activity: swimming allowed from 30 days, other exercise added gradually as weight comes down. Travel and holidays: best planned at least a month after surgery.
You move through diet stages from liquid food to soft and finally solid. Protein comes first, and high-calorie, fatty food is restricted.
Pregnancy is an option after bariatric surgery, but doctors advise waiting at least 12–18 months. By then the body has stabilized, weight has reached target values and nutritional status has normalized.
Yes, bariatric surgery makes vitamins a must. Since digestive anatomy is changed, absorption of some nutrients drops, and regular vitamin and mineral supplements become permanent in the patient's life.
It is possible to regain weight after bariatric surgery, but very unlikely if you follow your doctor's advice. Proper nutrition, avoiding high-calorie drinks and regular follow-up with City Medical Centre specialists are essential.

SADI-S combines a sleeve with intestinal bypass in two stages and is one of the most powerful bariatric operations, with 80–90% excess weight loss and a long-lasting result. It suits super obesity with a BMI over 50, severe type 2 diabetes, or a second stage after an ineffective sleeve. Anyone in Cordoba in these situations can discuss it at a consultation.
During the operation the surgeon works laparoscopically, which keeps rehabilitation as short as possible. Right after, you are under round-the-clock care in a ward, with meals and nursing included. After discharge, most people in Cordoba return to office work in 2–4 weeks, following a diet plan and avoiding saunas and heavy exercise for the first weeks.
If you are comparing bariatric surgery options in Cordoba, look beyond the operation itself. Here the package bundles the work-up in the centre's own lab, laparoscopic surgery, the stay with meals and nursing, a doctor on hand 24/7 and a year of follow-up. Apply for a free surgeon consultation to see how this applies to your case.

The decision to have bariatric surgery was not easy for me. I worried both about the operation itself and about how my life would change afterwards. At the consultation Andrey Georgievich explained everything in detail, so little by little my fear turned into confidence. What matters most to me now is the result and the chance to treat my health and lifestyle differently.

Spain's National Statistics Institute (INE) published figures from the 2020 European Health Survey. Obesity was recorded in 16.0 % of the population aged 18 and over: 16.5 % of men and 15.5 % of women. Overweight accounted for another 37.6 %. Taken together, 53.6 % of adults were above what is considered a normal weight. In plain terms, roughly one adult in six lives with obesity, and more than half are above the normal range. Someone in Cordoba who is considering bariatric surgery is therefore far from unusual.
The same survey lists the chronic problems most often diagnosed in people aged 15 and over. Hypertension comes first at 19.0 % and high cholesterol second at 15.3 %. Osteoarthritis is third at 14.4 %, and low back pain is reported by 13.7 %. These are national figures, and the survey summary we rely on gives no separate breakdown for Cordoba, so they should not be read as a local diagnosis. They do show which conditions sit alongside excess weight in everyday medical practice. Bariatric surgery is considered when excess weight comes with hypertension, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, varicose veins, joint disease, fatty liver disease or reproductive health problems. The doctor decides after an assessment whether surgery can help in your case; none of this is a promise of an outcome.
Everything starts with body mass index (BMI). You divide your weight in kilograms by your height in metres squared. Surgery is generally justified at a BMI above 40, or above 35 when serious related conditions are present. Sometimes it is also considered at lower values, when non-surgical methods have not worked. If you know your height and weight, you can calculate this number before writing to us. The coordinator will repeat the calculation with you during the free online consultation and explain what it means for the choice of method.
Cordoba is a large city. Its municipality had 324,902 inhabitants in 2024, which made it the twelfth largest in Spain, and the metropolitan area counted 354,202 in 2022. A city of this size has many adults with exactly the profile described above. That makes it useful to know in advance what each route offers: the public system, a private consultation, or an online assessment such as ours.
Spanish public healthcare works from a common portfolio of services set out in Royal Decree 1030/2006. One entry concerns obesity. It includes the adjustable gastric band for adults with a BMI above 40 kg/m², or above 35 with a significant associated condition. The condition for access is that conservative alternatives have failed: diet, exercise and behaviour modification. The same decree excludes techniques whose aim is "mere aesthetic or cosmetic improvement". Procedures with an aesthetic purpose and no link to an accident, an illness or a congenital malformation fall outside public specialised care.
That second point is why the difference between bariatric and plastic surgery matters. Bariatric surgery is a medical treatment of obesity and related illnesses. It changes how the digestive tract works, which tackles both the causes of excess weight and metabolism. Plastic surgery reshapes the outer contours of the body and neither treats obesity nor affects metabolism. The methods discussed at City Medical Centre are sleeve gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, mini gastric bypass (MGB) and SADI-S duodeno-ileal bypass. How those methods relate to your public coverage is something to check with your own health service. We do not judge entitlement to public funding, and we say so plainly.
Waiting time is the other half of the picture. The official surgical waiting-list statistics for 31 December 2025 give 199,950 patients on the structural surgical waiting list in Andalucía, or 23.51 per 1,000 inhabitants. The average wait was 173 days, against a national average of 121 days. For Spain as a whole, the first published version of the national summary counted 853,509 patients, with 21.6 % waiting more than six months. A later note corrected the data for Castilla-La Mancha, so treat that national total as the initial publication. These are waiting figures for all surgery, not for obesity operations specifically, and we do not present them as bariatric waiting times.
Several specialties show how uneven the queues are. In Andalucía, traumatology had 42,247 patients waiting for surgery, with an average of 187 days. Nationally, plastic surgery had the longest average wait at 269 days. Hip replacement averaged 98 days, with 13.7 % beyond the 180-day maximum, and knee replacement averaged 105 days, with 15.9 % beyond it. Outpatient first consultations stood at 84.42 per 1,000 people, with a 102-day average wait.
This matters for people with excess weight because joint disease and obesity often coexist. Someone waiting for a knee or hip operation may also be told that weight reduction would help. An online assessment does not replace anything in the public system, but it gives you information while you wait. You can ask the bariatric doctor which method suits your BMI and conditions, and what the plan looks like step by step. You decide afterwards, with no obligation, since the first consultation is free.
Recovery after bariatric surgery follows a predictable timetable, and the local weather affects how comfortable it is. The inpatient stay lasts 1–5 days under medical observation, depending on the complexity of the operation and how you feel. Office work is possible again after 2–4 weeks. Physical work usually resumes after about 1.5 months. Swimming is fine after 30 days, and other exercise is added gradually as weight drops. The final result of the operation becomes visible 18–24 months after surgery.
Against that timetable, Cordoba's climate is quite demanding. In the 1991–2020 climate averages from the state meteorological agency, July and August are the hottest months. The average daily maximum is 37.1 °C in July and 37.0 °C in August, with average minimums of 19.1 and 19.6 °C. Temperatures of 46.9 °C were recorded on 13 July 2017 and again on 14 August 2021. January is the coldest month, with an average maximum of 15.2 °C and a minimum of 3.7 °C. The lowest temperature on record is −8.2 °C, in January 2005.
Think about what the first weeks look like in each season. If your first weeks at home fall in the hot months, light daily walking is easier in the early morning or late evening than at midday. If they fall in winter, the chilly mornings are the main consideration. These are practical points to raise with the coordinator and the doctor. The doctor will advise on fluids, activity and food for your particular method.
Rain and sunshine follow a pattern too. Annual precipitation is 572.9 mm over 55.1 days. December is the wettest month at 90.7 mm, followed by November at 79.2 mm and October at 78.7 mm. July is the driest, with just 0.5 mm. The city gets 2,990 hours of sun a year, or 66 % of the possible total. That is 372 hours in July and only 161 in December. Relative humidity is 38 % in July and 78 % in December. In rainy months, short indoor routines can replace daily walks when the weather is bad.
We never schedule an operation by weather alone. The timing is agreed with you when the plan and dates are confirmed, before anything is booked. If you work in an office, 2–4 weeks off is the reference. If your work is physical, plan for about 1.5 months. The season can help you place those weeks.
Diet after bariatric surgery is not a single list. It moves in stages from liquid to soft to solid food. The main focus is protein, with a restriction on high-calorie, fatty food. High-calorie drinks are best avoided. Because vitamin and mineral absorption changes with the new digestive anatomy, regular supplements become a lasting part of life after the operation. The doctor sets the exact schedule for your method, so the stages are not the same for everyone.
We cannot describe Cordoba's food culture, because we have no sourced facts about it, and we will not guess at what people eat. What we can say is that the year has fixed social dates, and they are worth planning around. The Feria de Nuestra Señora de la Salud takes place in the last full week of May. The Festival of the Cordoba Patios was declared UNESCO World Heritage in 2012, and its centenary was marked in 2021. Spring is therefore a busy social period, with gatherings built around shared meals. A person who is in the liquid or soft stage during such a week will find it easier if family and friends know about it in advance.
The practical suggestion is simple. When you agree the date of the operation, bring up the dates in your calendar. Weddings, family celebrations, feria week and exams can all be set against the diet stages. The coordinator can explain what each stage means and remind you about tests and check-ups. Students in particular may want to look at exam periods. The University of Cordoba, founded in 1972, has about 21,000 enrolled students, and the Universidad Loyola Andalucía is the other university in the city. A tight academic schedule affects how you plan the weeks of lighter activity and the 2–4 weeks before you return to sedentary work.
Distance within the city is another point. The municipality covers roughly 1,253 km², which makes it very extensive. The Guadalquivir crosses it from east-northeast to west-southwest, mainly along its right bank. Not every resident lives close to the centre. Online follow-up makes this less of a problem than frequent in-person check-ups would, because many progress checks happen by photos and messages, wherever you live.
At City Medical Centre the all-inclusive package covers the whole sequence. It starts with preparation and ends with support for 12 months. During the first online consultation the doctor assesses your health and discusses your goals. The doctor then orders the tests needed to choose the method: blood and urine tests, an ECG, an ultrasound and a gastroscopy, plus specialist consultations. The exact list is given at the consultation. After surgery under general anaesthesia you stay under medical supervision for 1–5 days. After discharge, expect advice on diet and recovery, and scheduled checks of your well-being, weight and test results. A coordinator stays with you from day one. Remote progress checks by photos and answers during recovery are part of this support.
The follow-up matters because weight regain after bariatric surgery is possible. It is very unlikely if you follow the doctor's advice. The key points are proper eating, avoiding high-calorie drinks, taking vitamins and keeping regular contact with the specialists. Pregnancy is possible after the operation, but doctors advise holding off at least 12–18 months. During that period the body stabilises, weight reaches target values and nutritional status normalises. Planning a baby is a conversation to start at the first consultation, not an afterthought.
To get started, you only need to write on WhatsApp or Telegram. Coordinators answer round the clock, the free online consultation usually receives a reply within 15 minutes, and there is no commitment to surgery. Photos and your height and weight let the doctor give an initial assessment. If it turns out that surgery does not suit you, for example because of one of the contraindications such as pregnancy, age under 18 or an acute illness, the coordinator will tell you straight away.
The 2020 European Health Survey summary from the INE gives national figures: obesity in 16.0 % of adults and overweight in 37.6 %. The material we used has no separate breakdown for Cordoba, so we do not quote a local rate. What matters for your decision is your own BMI, which is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared, together with your health conditions. The doctor reviews both during the free online consultation.
The common portfolio of services in Royal Decree 1030/2006 includes the adjustable gastric band for adults with a BMI above 40 kg/m², or above 35 with a significant associated condition. This applies after conservative alternatives such as diet, exercise and behaviour modification have failed. Procedures done only for aesthetic reasons are excluded from public specialised care. For the methods discussed at City Medical Centre, check your entitlement with your own health service. We do not assess coverage ourselves.
Yes. The first consultation is free and does not commit you to surgery, and it does not interfere with a place on any list. Official figures for 31 December 2025 show an average surgical wait of 173 days in Andalucía, against 121 days nationally. Those numbers cover all surgery, not only obesity operations. Keep your current medical documents, because they help the doctor give a more accurate assessment.
It does not rule anything out, but it deserves planning. Average July and August maximums are 37.1 and 37.0 °C, and the record is 46.9 °C. Remember the recovery milestones: 1–5 days under observation, office work after 2–4 weeks, physical work after about 1.5 months and swimming after 30 days. Ask the doctor about activity and fluids for the weeks that fall in hot weather. The date of the operation is agreed with you before anything is booked.
The Feria de Nuestra Señora de la Salud falls in the last full week of May. Your diet moves in stages from liquid to soft to solid food, with protein in focus and high-calorie, fatty food restricted. Share the dates that matter to you with the coordinator when the plan is drawn up, and you will see together how they fit with the stages. The final decision on timing is yours, with the doctor's advice.
Very little, because follow-up is online. The municipality is very extensive, about 1,253 km², and distances inside it can be considerable. The coordinator stays in contact with you during the 12 months of support, and progress checks are done remotely by photos. Your tests and check-ups are listed for you in advance, and the coordinator reminds you about each one.
Your height and weight, a list of your health conditions and medications, and a few photos if the coordinator asks for them. If you have recent test results, keep them at hand. The doctor will say which of the tests (blood and urine, ECG, ultrasound, gastroscopy) are needed. Write on WhatsApp or Telegram at any hour, since coordinators answer round the clock.
