VASER liposuction: a male patient before and after surgery

Price at consultation

Main goal
Defined muscle relief and body contouring
When it is done
Athletic abs and delicate areas
Anaesthesia and stay
Local or general anaesthesia, 1–4 hours of surgery

The benefits and recovery times shown are averaged for each technique and given for guidance: the scope of correction and rehabilitation depend on your anatomy and individual features, and the surgeon confirms them at the consultation.

Recovery following liposuction

After tumescent liposuction, recovery is much shorter than after a conventional procedure. Most patients return to work within 7–10 days. In the first week, mild swelling and a raised temperature are possible — a normal response to surgery. Compression garments are worn for 30–45 days: they fix the new contours and speed up tissue recovery. In the first month, bathhouse, sauna, pool and intense sport are off-limits. For the best result and faster recovery we recommend lymphatic drainage massage, pressotherapy and a gradual return to activity. First visible changes show 2 weeks after surgery, when the main swelling subsides; the final result forms in 3–6 months.

Post-op check-ups

After 7 days, at 3 months and at 6 months. Until the end of the year, get a post-surgery consultation with your surgeon to review results and get more information, at the clinic's expense.

Liposuction in Alicante: techniques, stages and price

Liposuction is a surgical method of removing excess subcutaneous fat from problem areas. It is not a weight-loss tool and does not replace diet or exercise: its purpose is targeted contouring. Patients from Alicante most often ask about saddlebags on the thighs, a sagging belly, and fat on the back, flanks, arms or chin. Fat cells taken from treated areas do not grow back, so with a steady lifestyle the result lasts.

Is it painful? No: the procedure is done under anaesthesia, local or general depending on scope. Afterwards mild discomfort is possible and is relieved with painkillers prescribed by the doctor. Most patients return to their usual routine in 7–10 days, while swelling and bruising resolve by weeks 4–5. That is the typical course for people in Alicante after liposuction.

If you are comparing liposuction prices in Alicante, check what the figure depends on: the number of zones, their size and the chosen technique. Here the starting price is $1,200 (≈ €1,100), the final sum is set after an examination and nothing hidden is added. Hormonal screening before surgery and surgeon support through recovery are part of the approach. Book a free consultation to get your plan.

Body contouring on a flat coastline: what Alicante's terrain asks of your body

Alicante sits at 3 m above sea level on mostly flat ground, so the city is easy to cover on foot or by bike. The only real relief comes from Benacantil, the Serra Grossa, the Tossal and the Cabo de la Huerta. There is no permanent river, only dry ramblas, so waterfront promenades and wide streets are the natural routes for regular exercise. This matters for liposuction because the operation works best for people who already move regularly and whose weight is steady. Liposuction targets stubborn local fat that diet and exercise do not shift. It is not a way to lose weight.

Many people who ask about body contouring describe the same pattern. The abdomen, flanks, outer thighs or lower back stay rounded even after months of walking, cycling or swimming. These are the areas the doctor assesses first during the online consultation. You send photos on WhatsApp or Telegram, and the coordinator answers round the clock. Then the doctor reviews the distribution of fat and the condition of your skin. A single operation can treat several areas, for example the abdomen together with the flanks, or the inner and outer thighs. This saves a separate recovery period for each zone.

The shape of the city's daily life affects how you plan. Compact distances mean that the early days after surgery, when you stay home, are easy to organise: groceries, a pharmacy and a short walk are all close. The doctor recommends a gradual return to activity, and a gentle walk fits that description. Intense sport is off-limits for the first month, so a bike ride along the coast should wait until the doctor confirms it is fine. If you are active in the mornings by the sea, discuss with the doctor when you can resume, and do not decide it yourself.

Planning also depends on which technique suits you. Tumescent liposuction uses a special solution that loosens fat for removal through a thin cannula. It is used for the abdomen, flanks, thighs, back, arms and chin. VASER uses ultrasound to break down fat cells before vacuum removal, and it is chosen for defined muscle relief and delicate areas. Both can be done under local or general anaesthesia, and the operation takes 1–4 hours depending on the scope. The doctor explains the choice during the consultation and does not push you towards a bigger operation than you need.

If your case can be solved without surgery, the doctor will tell you so. The same applies if the cause of the fat deposits is hormonal. Before surgery an endocrinologist rules out hormonal causes, because this improves the long-term result. Endocrine obesity and decompensated diabetes are contraindications, as are pregnancy and breastfeeding, blood coagulation disorders, and serious heart, kidney or liver disease. Patients must be 18 or older.

Compression garments in a hot, sunny climate

The garment is the part of recovery that Alicante's weather affects most. The climate is hot semi-arid. July and August are the warmest months, with average maximums of 30.7 °C and 31,1 °C and minimums of 21.3 °C and 21.8 °C. The record is 42.0 °C, set on 13 August 2022. Average humidity is 65 %, and the city gets 3,014 hours of sun a year, with 345 hours in July alone. In January the maximum is 17.2 °C and the minimum 6.7 °C.

The compression garment is worn for 30–45 days. It fixes the new contours and speeds up tissue recovery, and it is fitted on the day of surgery. How comfortable this period is depends on the season in which the operation falls. After a summer operation the garment is worn through the hottest weeks of the year. Under a warm, humid sky, a snug layer feels heavier and needs more attention to skin care and hygiene. After an operation in November, December or January, the same 30–45 days fall in mild weather, and the garment is simply an extra layer under normal clothing.

That is why many patients from Alicante choose the cooler months for the procedure. As an example, with surgery planned for mid-November 2026, the compression period would end between late December 2026 and the end of the year's first days. The first visible changes appear at about 2 weeks, once the main swelling subsides. The interim result comes at 1.5–2 months, which would be around the turn of January and February 2027. The final contour forms 3–6 months after surgery, so in this example between mid-February and mid-May 2027. In February and March the sea is at its coldest, around 14 °C, so the final contour would be ready by the time the water warms up. By August the sea reaches 26 °C.

Sun and heat also require care beyond the garment. The doctor advises keeping away from tanning beds for at least a month and avoiding alcohol for the same period. For the first month the bathhouse, sauna and pool are off-limits. With an annual average of 3,014 hours of sun, it is worth asking the doctor during the consultation when the treated skin can be exposed to the sun and how to protect it. The doctor gives these recommendations individually after surgery, and the coordinator is available on WhatsApp and Telegram if you have questions between check-ups.

A practical point for hot days: dressings and the garment must be handled as instructed. All scheduled dressings are part of the package. If the garment feels uncomfortable in warm weather, send a photo to the coordinator rather than loosening or removing it on your own. Progress is monitored remotely by photos, so you do not have to wait for a check-up to get an answer.

Weight stability, and what the national health survey says about it

Weight stability is the most important personal factor in a lasting result. Liposuction removes fat cells from the treated areas, and removed fat cells do not come back. But the remaining ones can grow if you gain weight. A strict diet is not required after the operation, but a balanced diet and regular physical activity help keep the result. If your weight changes a lot, the doctor will ask you to see a nutritionist or endocrinologist before planning any surgery.

The national context is worth knowing. The European Health Survey 2020 from Spain's statistical institute (INE) found obesity in 16.0 % of the population aged 18 and over: 16.5 % of men and 15.5 % of women. Overweight affected 37.6 %, and 53.6 % of adults were above the weight considered normal. These figures cover the whole country, not Alicante specifically, and they are not a reason to see liposuction as a weight-loss tool. They do explain why the doctor spends time on weight history, diet and activity during the first online consultation.

The same survey records that osteoarthritis is the third most common diagnosed chronic problem among people aged 15 and over, at 14.4 %, after high blood pressure (19.0 %) and high cholesterol (15.3 %). Low back pain affects 13.7 %. Body weight is one of the things people discuss with their doctors in relation to joints and the back. Liposuction is not a treatment for these conditions. But if you already have back or joint complaints, tell the doctor, because they affect how you lie, move and rest during recovery.

If your weight is unstable, or if the main problem is obesity rather than local fat deposits, another route may be more suitable. The consultation can lead to a conclusion that is not what you expected. For example, the doctor may suggest that you stabilise your weight first and return afterwards. That is part of why the first consultation is free and carries no obligation to book. Some patients combine liposuction with abdominoplasty when the abdominal skin has lost tone. Skin tone, elasticity and turgor are always checked before surgery. Good skin usually tightens on its own and adapts to the new contour, while reduced tone or stretch marks call for preparatory treatments.

For a stable result, the doctor looks at the following at the consultation:

Your weight history over recent months, and whether the weight has held steady.

The hormonal screening results, which help predict the long-term result.

How the fat is distributed: uneven subcutaneous fat, disrupted body proportions, or changes after childbirth or weight loss.

The condition of the skin in the areas to be treated.

Coverage: why cosmetic liposuction is paid for privately in Spain

Patients in Alicante sometimes ask whether public health care covers body contouring. Under the common portfolio of services of the national health system (SNS), set out in Royal Decree 1030/2006, techniques whose purpose is "mere aesthetic or cosmetic improvement" are not funded. Procedures with an aesthetic purpose that are unrelated to an accident, an illness or a congenital malformation are excluded from specialist care. In practice, cosmetic liposuction falls outside public health care.

The same decree treats breast implants and skin expanders as reconstructive implants, but not when they are used in aesthetic surgery unrelated to accident, illness or congenital malformation. For obesity, the decree includes the adjustable gastric band for adults who meet criteria based on body mass index and associated conditions, after conservative alternatives such as diet, exercise and behaviour change have failed. This is a different kind of treatment from liposuction. If you suspect that your situation is a medical one and not an aesthetic one, say so at the consultation, and the doctor will explain which route fits.

Waiting times add a practical reason why patients look at private options for planned procedures. On 31 December 2025 the SNS surgical waiting list held 853,509 patients, with an average wait of 121 days, and 21.6 % had waited more than 6 months. Plastic surgery was the specialty with the longest average wait: 269 days. The Comunitat Valenciana had 51,600 patients on the structural surgical waiting list, 9.91 per 1,000 inhabitants, one of the lowest rates in the SNS, with an average wait of 88 days. These numbers describe public waiting lists in general. They do not predict anything about a cosmetic operation, because cosmetic liposuction is not part of the public offer in the first place.

What this means in practice: you plan the operation yourself, with a doctor you have talked to in detail. At the online consultation the doctor names the final terms, and they are fixed in the contract for medical services before anything is booked. A deposit secures the date. The package includes the following, as stated in the programme:

All scheduled dressings and post-op check-ups.

Compression garments fitted on the day of surgery.

A stay in a comfortable hospital ward with meals, if you have general anaesthesia.

Individual recommendations for recovery.

A personal coordinator on call, and remote progress monitoring by photos.

If you have private health insurance, ask your insurer in advance whether it pays for aesthetic procedures. Many policies exclude them, and the coordinator can tell you what documents the consultation produces.

Preparing for the operation around the calendar of Alicante

Preparation follows a fixed order. It starts with photos sent on WhatsApp or Telegram and the free assessment. Then you confirm the plan and the dates. After that the check-up before surgery covers blood tests (complete count, coagulation panel, biochemistry, infections), an ECG, a chest X-ray and, if needed, a GP consultation. You also need an anaesthesiologist consultation. Seven to ten days before the operation you give up smoking, alcohol and medications that affect clotting, such as aspirin. The doctor gives all instructions after the first consultation.

The city's annual calendar is worth checking before you choose a date. The Hogueras de San Juan run from 19 to 24 June and are a Festival of International Tourist Interest. A few days later come five nights of fireworks competitions on the Postiguet beach. If you want to be in good form during that period, work backwards. The final result forms 3–6 months after surgery, and the compression garment is worn for 30–45 days. An operation in the winter months leaves ample margin before June. If you prefer a quieter recovery, avoid the festival days for the first weeks, when the doctor advises limiting exertion and avoiding heavy lifting. During the first 7 days you should skip physical exertion altogether.

Rainfall also plays a small role in logistics. The year brings 284.5 mm of precipitation over 34.7 days, with September (51.1 mm) and October (33.1 mm) the wettest months and July the driest at 3.2 mm. Short rainy days in autumn are not a problem for a recovery that is mostly spent at home, and a day indoors is no hardship in the first week. Check-ups at 7 days, 3 months and 6 months can also be adapted: the progress is followed through photos, and the coordinator reminds you when each is due.

If you study or work at the University of Alicante, whose campus is in Sant Vicent del Raspeig next to the city, think about your timetable. It was founded in 1979 and counted 27,542 students in the 2011/12 academic year. Most patients return to work and their normal routine within 7–10 days. A desk-based schedule can usually resume at that point, while physical work needs a more careful conversation with the doctor. The swelling and bruising disappear by weeks 4–5.

A checklist for the weeks before:

Send clear photos of the areas to be treated, as the doctor requests.

Complete the tests and the anaesthesiologist consultation.

Stop smoking, alcohol and clotting-affecting medication 7–10 days before.

Arrange for someone to help you at home on the first day, particularly after general anaesthesia.

Check the calendar for events and plans in the first 30–45 days.

The days after surgery: what to expect and when to ask

The day itself depends on the anaesthesia. With local anaesthesia you go home 3–4 hours after the operation. With general anaesthesia you stay one day in a ward under round-the-clock nursing care. The operation takes from 1 hour for small areas to 3–4 hours for a combined procedure. The doctor removes fat through micro-punctures of 3–5 mm, which usually need no stitches. When healed, the marks are barely visible, and with proper care during recovery they fade.

In the first week, mild swelling and a raised temperature are possible. This is a normal response to surgery. You may feel mild discomfort, which the painkillers prescribed by the doctor relieve. Lymphatic drainage massage, pressotherapy and a gradual return to activity are recommended for a better result and faster recovery. Keep in mind that after tumescent liposuction recovery is considerably shorter than after a conventional procedure, but it is still a recovery, and rest in the first days is part of the plan.

The sequence of milestones is simple:

Day of surgery: compression garment fitted; you go home or stay one day.

First 7 days: no physical exertion or heavy lifting; first check-up at 7 days.

7–10 days: most patients return to work.

2 weeks: first visible changes as the main swelling subsides.

Weeks 4–5: swelling and bruising disappear.

30–45 days: compression garment stage ends; the bathhouse, sauna, pool and active sport stay off-limits during the first month, and the doctor tells you when to resume.

1.5–2 months: interim result.

3 and 6 months: check-ups; the final contour forms 3–6 months after surgery.

Because Alicante's weather is mild for much of the year, short walks outdoors are easy to fit in. The sea is a separate question. Ask the doctor at the consultation when you can swim again, since the instructions mention the pool and bathhouse, and the doctor will give the specific advice for your case. Wearing the garment during a warm spell and protecting treated skin from strong sun are worth discussing too. If something looks unusual, photograph it and send it to the coordinator. You do not have to wait for the next scheduled check-up, and the answer comes round the clock.

Not every concern needs a conversation: a little swelling that comes and goes, and bruising that fades over weeks 4–5, are expected. But a clear change from what the doctor described, such as a rising temperature that does not settle, should be reported at once, and the doctor will decide what to do.

Is summer or winter the better season for liposuction in Alicante?

Neither is forbidden, but the compression garment makes the difference. It is worn for 30–45 days, and in July and August the maximum averages about 31 °C with 65 % average humidity, so it can feel warm. In winter, with a January maximum of 17.2 °C, the same period passes in mild weather. An operation in the cooler months also lets the final result, which forms 3–6 months after surgery, be ready by the warm season. The doctor will help you choose a date during the consultation.

Does Spanish public health care pay for liposuction?

Not for cosmetic purposes. The common portfolio of the national health system (Royal Decree 1030/2006) excludes techniques whose purpose is mere aesthetic or cosmetic improvement, and procedures with an aesthetic purpose unrelated to accident, illness or congenital malformation are left out of specialist care. If you think your situation is medical, say so at the consultation and the doctor will explain what applies. The terms of your private operation are fixed in the contract before anything is booked.

Can I plan the operation before the Hogueras de San Juan in June?

Yes, if you count backwards. The festival runs from 19 to 24 June. The compression garment is worn for 30–45 days, first changes appear at 2 weeks, and the final result forms 3–6 months after surgery. An operation in the winter would leave plenty of margin. During the first 7 days avoid physical exertion and heavy lifting, so do not plan strenuous activity in that week. The doctor sets the individual timetable.

Will liposuction help me if my weight changes a lot?

Liposuction is not a weight-loss method. Removed fat cells do not return, but the remaining ones can grow if you gain weight. In the national health survey of 2020, 53.6 % of Spanish adults were above the weight considered normal, so the topic is common. If your weight is unstable, the doctor will recommend seeing a nutritionist or endocrinologist first. Hormonal screening is also part of the planning.

How do I do the pre-operative tests if I live in Alicante?

After the first online consultation you receive all instructions. The tests include blood work (complete count, coagulation panel, biochemistry, infections), an ECG, a chest X-ray and, if needed, a GP consultation, plus an anaesthesiologist consultation. They can be done at the clinic with no waiting. Seven to ten days before the operation you stop smoking, alcohol and medications that affect clotting, such as aspirin. The coordinator answers questions on WhatsApp and Telegram round the clock.

Can I go back to cycling or beach walks after the operation?

Not at once. Intense sport and the pool are off-limits during the first month, and the first 7 days exclude physical exertion and heavy lifting. A gradual return to activity is recommended, with lymphatic drainage massage and pressotherapy. Ask the doctor at the consultation when each activity is appropriate, including swimming in the sea, since the instructions are individual. Most patients return to work within 7–10 days.

Does the sun in Alicante affect the result?

The city has about 3,014 hours of sun a year, so it is sensible to ask about sun protection. The doctor advises avoiding tanning beds and alcohol for at least a month. The garment must stay on as instructed even in warm weather, and the doctor gives individual advice on when the treated skin can be exposed. If you notice anything unusual under the garment, send a photo to the coordinator.

What if I have back or joint complaints?

Tell the doctor at the consultation. In the 2020 national survey, osteoarthritis was the third most common diagnosed chronic problem (14.4 %) and low back pain affected 13.7 %. Liposuction does not treat these conditions, but they influence how you rest and move during recovery. The doctor will assess your health in general and say whether the operation is advisable, and whether a different route is better.

Can the consultation be done from Alicante without leaving home?

Yes. The first consultation is online and free. You send photos on WhatsApp or Telegram, the doctor assesses the areas and skin tone, and you get the terms in writing. Nothing is booked until you confirm the plan and the dates. After the operation, progress is also monitored remotely by photos, with scheduled check-ups at 7 days, 3 months and 6 months.
