FAQ

Rhinoplasty:
frequently asked questions

Rhinoplasty (nose job) — one of the more delicate and frequently requested plastic surgeries, meant to adjust the nose's shape to the individual proportions of the nose and the whole face. Modern rhinoplasty is not merely a procedure to change how the nose appears, but complex surgical work aimed at an aesthetic ideal without risking health.

Rhinoplasty in Iasi step by step

A nose that fits the face changes the whole impression while keeping you recognisable. That is the principle behind rhinoplasty: correcting the hump, width, tip or nostrils in line with facial proportions. People in Iasi who browse before-and-after photos online should instead discuss at a consultation what modern rhinoplasty can and cannot do in their specific case.

Everything starts with a consultation and nose modelling: the doctor assesses your anatomy, discusses wishes and chooses the correction method. Patients from Iasi then complete a lab work-up — blood count, biochemistry, coagulation panel, infection tests, ECG, chest X-ray and a CT scan of the sinuses. Surgery lasts 1.5 to 3 hours under general anaesthesia, followed by one day in the inpatient unit.

Start with a free, non-binding consultation: you get an assessment of nasal anatomy, a 3D forecast and answers on recovery. If you decide to proceed, rhinoplasty costs $4,200 (≈ RON 20,500), including the operation, inpatient stay, follow-up visits and dressings, with a lifetime guarantee on the result. Patients from Iasi can send a request online or message a coordinator.

What patients write after this operation. Reviews are translated from the original language.

Ekaterina Ivanova

For a long time I was self-conscious about the length of my nose, until a friend who had had rhinoplasty recommended this clinic. At the very first consultation they set the date of surgery and explained every stage in detail. The rhinoplasty under general anaesthesia was performed by Mareta Meirieva: the swelling went down quickly, and after just a week my nose looked natural and neat. Modern equipment, attentive staff and appointments without delays made the whole process comfortable. I recommend the clinic to anyone who values professionalism and a quality result.

Rhinoplasty

Olga Vasilyeva

This was my first visit to the clinic, for rhinoseptoplasty, and to be honest I was very nervous. At the consultation they explained every stage of the operation and recovery in detail, which calmed me down straight away. The operation was performed by Mareta Meirieva: the swelling started to go down on the third day, and the result is visible to the naked eye. Everything inside is sterile and pleasant, the atmosphere inspires trust, and the staff are always responsive. I thank the clinic for the high level of service and the warm approach!

Rhinoplasty

Marina Samarina

Everything was first-class: clean, cosy and calm. Booking and choosing the right date was easy. The nose operation went smoothly and the nerve block was done perfectly: now I breathe freely without nasal drops! It is a real lifesaver for anyone tired of endless prescriptions and ineffective procedures. I recommend it to everyone who values professionalism and results.

Rhinoplasty

Viktoria Petrova

I recently had rhinoplasty and I am absolutely delighted. At the consultation they told me about every stage in detail, so I went into surgery fully prepared. The operation went smoothly: they straightened the bridge of my nose and made the nostrils symmetrical, and the shape came out very neat. The swelling lasted a little longer than I expected, but they explained straight away that full recovery takes more time. No unpleasant surprises, everything was within the normal range. I recommend the clinic to anyone looking for a confident result and an attentive attitude.

Cold air, heated rooms and a nose that has to work: start with breathing

Iasi lies on the Bahlui river in the historical region of Moldavia, in north-east Romania, and its weather covers a wide range. City weather-station records for 1991-2020 show a January mean high of 1.3 °C and a mean low of -5.1 °C. July averages 29.0 °C by day and 16.3 °C at night. The recorded extremes are 41.3 °C at the top and -36.3 °C at the bottom, the cold one in February. A nose has to condition air across that whole range. For anyone thinking about rhinoplasty, that is a practical reason to treat breathing as part of the plan from the very first message, not as an afterthought.

Rhinoplasty is a nasal operation that adjusts appearance and, when airflow is restricted, improves breathing. If the septum is deviated, the combined operation is rhinoseptoplasty, which corrects the septum and changes the shape of the nose in one go. Septoplasty on its own keeps the outer contour intact and only restores breathing. Which of these fits you is decided by the doctor during the online consultation, based on your photos, your description of how you breathe and what you want to change. The first consultation is free and does not commit you to anything.

Humidity in Iasi also changes through the year. The annual average is 70%, with about 83% in December and about 60% in July. Why does this matter for planning? Inflammation of the ears, throat, nose or eyes is on the list of reasons why an operation cannot go ahead. A date is therefore never fixed blindly. If you develop such symptoms close to the planned day, tell your coordinator straight away. The doctor will decide whether the date should stay or move, and rescheduling is a normal part of careful preparation.

Preparation begins 21 days before the operation. At the first appointment you receive a list of tests. The set includes a complete blood count, biochemistry, a coagulation panel, a chest X-ray and an X-ray of the sinuses. The sinus X-ray is there because the doctor needs to see the nasal area as a whole. You can arrange the tests in the city, and your coordinator reminds you which ones are still outstanding. Blood clotting problems are listed among the contraindications, which is why the coagulation panel matters.

Wet June, bright July, dark December: reading the weather before choosing a month

Annual precipitation in Iasi is 548.0 mm, spread over 75.1 days with at least 1 mm. June is the wettest month at 78.0 mm, July follows with 70.8 mm, and February is the driest with 25.8 mm. Snow adds up to 61.8 cm a year in the 1961-1990 normals, with 14.3 cm in February and 11.3 cm in January. None of this changes the operation itself. It is done under general anaesthesia and followed by one day at the clinic. It does change what the first weeks feel like, for example how you get to the check-up after one week or what you wear on a slushy day.

Sunshine is a more personal question for a nose operation. The city gets about 2,083.5 hours of sun a year, with 291.2 hours in July and only 61.5 hours in December. If you wear glasses every day, or you know you will want sunglasses in July, say so when you write to the coordinator. Ask the doctor during the consultation how and when a frame may rest on the bridge of the nose, and what sun protection fits your recovery programme. The programme is issued after the operation, and the answer depends on your anatomy and on the technique chosen. Nobody can honestly give you one figure for everyone.

The dark months have one useful side effect for the online part. With so few hours of sun in December, photographs for the doctor need a little thought. Daylight by a window, the face straight on, then from each side and from below, gives a much clearer picture than a lamp in the evening. The doctor builds a 3D model of the future result from this material and explains the course of your operation. Clear, evenly lit photographs make that conversation more accurate.

The 3D model is a forecast made to discuss your wishes. The real extent of correction and the speed of recovery depend on your anatomy, and the doctor confirms them in the consultation. Typical recovery times quoted for any type of nasal operation are averages for general orientation only. Plan your month with a margin and not to the exact day.

Festival weeks, pilgrimage crowds and the Easter break: when your face is on show

Iasi has a busy public calendar. Hangariada, a festival of aeronautics and art, takes place every May. FILIT, the literature festival, has run since 2013, and the Afterhills music festival since 2017. The International Theatre Festival for Young Audience is held every October. Around 14 October the Saint Parascheva pilgrimage draws hundreds of thousands of pilgrims, and it coincides with the city's Celebration Days. These are the weeks when many people want to look their best in photographs and at gatherings. They are also the weeks to avoid scheduling anything for the very day before.

The holiday calendar helps too. Romania has 15 non-working days: 1-2 January, 24 January, Orthodox Easter from Friday to Monday, 1 May, 1 June, Pentecost on Sunday and Monday, 15 August, 30 November, 1 December and 25-26 December. Orthodox Easter Sunday falls on 2 May 2027. Suppose you want the operation done before that weekend. Counting back, the 21-day preparation period would need to begin by about 11 April 2027, and the operation itself should fall comfortably earlier, with room for the one-week check-up before the long weekend.

I would not try to schedule the operation so that the swelling has «just about settled» on the day of an event. Swelling and recovery differ from person to person, and the doctor can only describe typical courses. A sensible rule is to leave a clear gap between the check-up after one week and the event, and to treat the check-ups at 3 and 6 months as part of the same calendar. Decide first which date is fixed, then work backwards from it with the coordinator.

Public holidays also affect small practical things: laboratories and family doctors may work differently over the long weekends around 30 November, 1 December and Christmas. Book the tests so they do not fall in a gap. Your coordinator answers on WhatsApp and Telegram round the clock, including on non-working days, so questions about the plan do not have to wait for a working morning.

Splint colour, swelling and the first week in a student city

Iasi is a university city. More than 60,000 students study in its five public universities, and Alexandru Ioan Cuza University alone had 24,047 students and 15 faculties in 2019-2020. If you study or teach there, the academic calendar is the first thing to lay next to the operation date. The operation takes between 1.5 and 3 hours depending on complexity, under general anaesthesia, and is followed by one day at the clinic. Classes, exams and deadlines are better placed after the first check-up than squeezed into the days around the operation.

After the operation you receive a recovery programme. Check-ups take place at 7 days, 3 months and 6 months, and consultations with the doctor stay free for a year afterwards. Your own coordinator keeps in touch during recovery, answers questions and books the follow-up appointments. The nasal splint can be chosen in a colour of your liking: purple, gold, green, light blue, pink, yellow, raspberry or carbon. It is a small detail, but many people find it makes the first days easier to face.

Daily movement through the city matters in the early weeks. CTP Iasi runs 126 trams and 150 buses, and electric trams have been running since 1900, so the network is extensive. If you rely on public transport, ask the doctor during the consultation how soon you can return to crowded vehicles and busy pavements. Sport is part of the city's life as well: FC Politehnica Iasi plays at the Emil Alexandrescu Stadium, and CS Politehnica Iasi has basketball (since 1967) and rugby (since 1964) sections. If you play or follow contact sports, raise the question of when it is safe to return. The answer comes from the doctor who knows your nose, not from a general rule.

Age and history also count. The optimal age for primary rhinoplasty is 18 to 45, when the nose has finished forming and tissues heal well. Revision rhinoplasty is considered no earlier than a year after the primary operation. If an earlier operation left you unhappy, send the photos and describe what happened. The doctor will tell you honestly whether a correction is sensible and when.

Insurance cards and a cosmetic operation: what to clarify before you decide

Health insurance in Romania is run by CNAS, the national health insurance authority. It manages the social health insurance system and a basic package of medical services, medicines, sanitary materials and medical devices. Free procedures require a health card showing that insurance is paid. EU citizens and uninsured Romanians receive free emergency care. Since April 2019, insured people may also pay the difference between a private provider's tariff and the fund's fee. These are the general rules of the system, and they are the starting point for any question about coverage.

For a cosmetic nose operation, do not assume anything. CNAS has begun introducing co-payments for certain services that are not strictly medically necessary. The sources we used found no official figure on how cosmetic operations are covered, and none on waiting lists. A deviated septum with marked breathing problems is a functional question, but we cannot promise that any part of the operation will be funded by the insurance system. Ask your family doctor and the insurance fund directly, and keep their answer in writing.

The wider picture explains why many people look for a private route. Out-of-pocket payments were around 21% of total health expenditure, compared with an EU average of 15%. The system is also described as hospital-centric, with a shortage of healthcare workers. These figures are dated, so treat them as background and not as a forecast of your own experience. What we can describe precisely is our own process, which does not depend on the insurance card.

The process starts with photos sent on WhatsApp or Telegram, followed by a free assessment from the doctor. The doctor names the cost of the operation, and it is fixed in the contract before anything is booked. The date is reserved when the deposit is paid, by card at the clinic or online by bank transfer. The preparation, the operation, the one-day stay and the follow-up for 12 months are all set out beforehand, so nothing is left to be discovered afterwards.

Does the cold Iasi winter affect when I can have rhinoplasty?

The weather itself does not decide the date. The operation is done under general anaesthesia in the clinic, with one day of stay. What matters is your health on the day. Inflammation of the ears, throat, nose or eyes is a contraindication, so if you have a cold or a similar infection close to the planned date, tell your coordinator at once. The doctor decides whether to keep or move the date. The January mean high of 1.3 °C and the snow are mostly a question of comfort for your first check-up, one week after the operation.

I get a blocked nose in damp months. Can that be dealt with in the same operation?

Possibly. If the cause is a deviated septum, the combined operation is rhinoseptoplasty. It corrects the septum and changes the shape of the nose together, and it is performed under general anaesthesia. Only the doctor can say whether your breathing complaint comes from the septum or from something else. Send photos and a short description of when the problem appears, and the doctor will answer in the free consultation. If rhinoplasty is not suitable for your case, you will be told that too.

The days are very short in December. How should I take photos for the consultation?

Sunshine in Iasi drops to about 61.5 hours in December, compared with 291.2 hours in July, so a window in daylight is your best light source. Take the face straight on, from both sides and slightly from below, without filters and with the hair away from the face. Even light shows the bridge, tip and nostrils clearly. From these photos the doctor prepares the 3D model and explains the plan during the online consultation.

Can I plan the operation before Orthodox Easter 2027?

Yes, if you leave enough room. Orthodox Easter Sunday is on 2 May 2027, and the non-working days run from Friday to Monday. Preparation begins 21 days before the operation, and the tests must be done before it. Work back from the long weekend and leave time for the check-up after one week. Swelling and recovery vary from person to person, so the doctor cannot promise how the nose will look on a given day. Choose a date with a margin, not one that is exactly at the limit.

Will my Romanian health insurance cover a cosmetic nose operation?

Do not count on it. The insurance fund runs a basic package of services, and free procedures require a health card showing paid insurance. CNAS has also started introducing co-payments for certain services that are not strictly medically necessary. No official figure on cosmetic surgery coverage was found. If your breathing is affected, ask your family doctor and the fund directly. Our coordinators can describe the planned operation in writing so you have clear wording for those questions.

I wear glasses all year and want sunglasses in July. Is that a problem?

It is a good question for the consultation. Tell the doctor how long you wear glasses each day and what frames you use. The recovery programme issued after the operation says how and when anything may rest on the bridge of the nose, and the answer depends on your anatomy and the technique. The city gets about 291.2 hours of sun in July, so sun protection is part of a summer plan, and the doctor can advise on it. The same applies to the splint, which you can choose in one of eight colours.

Can I schedule the operation around the October festivals and the pilgrimage?

You can, but leave a clear gap. The Saint Parascheva pilgrimage around 14 October, the theatre festival for young audiences and the Celebration Days bring crowds and photographs. Preparation begins 21 days before the operation, and the check-up after one week should fall before any event where you want to feel at ease. The doctor cannot promise how swelling will look on a given day, so avoid a date that depends on it. Start the conversation with the coordinator early.

Do coordinators answer on public holidays such as 1 December or Christmas?

Yes. Coordinators answer on WhatsApp and Telegram round the clock, including the 15 non-working days of the Romanian calendar. The practical point is that laboratories and family doctors may work differently on those days, so book the pre-operation tests with that in mind. The set includes a complete blood count, biochemistry, a coagulation panel, a chest X-ray and a sinus X-ray. Your coordinator reminds you what is still due and helps adjust the plan.
