FAQ
Yes, bariatric surgery is the medical term for it. At City Medical Centre the main methods are sleeve gastrectomy (gastric sleeve) and gastric bypass; the surgeon chooses the method by your BMI and health.
Usually a BMI over 40, or over 35 with related health conditions. The surgeon confirms whether surgery suits you at the consultation.
The clinic's bariatric procedures are performed by experienced bariatric surgeons:

Surgery is prescribed only when clear criteria are met
BMI is the main tool for assessing the degree of obesity. It is calculated by dividing body weight (kg) by height squared (m²). Surgery is usually justified with a BMI above 40, or above 35 with serious related conditions. In some cases surgery is considered at lower values too — if non-surgical approaches have failed.
People often confuse these two, though their aims are fundamentally different. Bariatric surgery is medical treatment of obesity and associated diseases. It changes the way the digestive tract works, acting on the causes of excess weight and on metabolism. Plastic surgery alters outer body contours and does not treat obesity or affect metabolism.
The four main types of bariatric surgery at City Medical Centre are sleeve gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, mini gastric bypass (MGB) and SADI-S duodeno-ileal bypass. Each method is matched individually to BMI, related conditions and the patient's goals.
Using modern laparoscopic technique, we perform the operation via 4 small punctures of 5 to 15 mm. Cosmetic sutures are placed, leaving marks that are nearly invisible after healing.
Recovery depends on your activity. Office work: after 2–4 weeks. Physical work: after 1.5 months. Sport and activity: swimming allowed after 30 days, other exercise added step by step as weight drops. Travel and holidays: plan them no earlier than a month after surgery.
In stages, your diet goes from liquid to soft to solid food. The main focus is protein and restricting high-calorie, fatty food.
Pregnancy after bariatric surgery can happen, though doctors advise holding off at least 12–18 months. In this period the body becomes stable, weight reaches target values and nutritional status normalizes.
Yes — vitamins are required after bariatric surgery. With the digestive anatomy changed, some nutrients are absorbed less well, and regular vitamin and mineral supplements become a permanent part of life.
Weight can be regained after bariatric surgery, but this is very unlikely with the doctor's advice followed. Proper nutrition, avoiding high-calorie drinks and regular follow-up with City Medical Centre specialists are crucial.

Why do diets fail? The body fights back: metabolism slows, appetite grows, and lost kilos return. When diet changes and medication cannot fundamentally improve the situation, surgery becomes the effective way out. Szczecin residents who have tried diets, fasting and pills for years without a lasting result are exactly the patients for whom bariatric operations are intended.
The work-up is done in one building with its own lab, ultrasound and gastroscopy, so preparation is quick and without queues. After laparoscopic surgery, the patient stays under observation for 1 to 5 days depending on the extent of the operation. Within the first hours you may sit up, stand and drink. Most Szczecin patients are up and moving on day one.
Starting is simple. Leave your name and phone number or write in any messenger, and a coordinator will arrange a free consultation. In about 15 minutes the surgeon will say whether bariatric surgery is right for you and which method fits. For people from Szczecin, this conversation is the fastest way to replace temporary fixes with a lasting solution.

The decision to have bariatric surgery was not easy for me. I worried both about the operation itself and about how my life would change afterwards. At the consultation Andrey Georgievich explained everything in detail, so little by little my fear turned into confidence. What matters most to me now is the result and the chance to treat my health and lifestyle differently.

The Supreme Audit Office (NIK) used 2022 data to count 9,185 thousand adults with obesity in Poland, or 29.8% of the population. For the West Pomeranian voivodeship, whose capital is Szczecin, the NIK table shows 392 thousand adults and a share of 28.9%. That chart is titled as a share of patients with overweight and obesity, so it is not exactly the same as prevalence. NIK's own text says overweight and obesity affect roughly 60-70% of residents, depending on the voivodeship. Read these numbers as a rough scale, not as a precise diagnosis for any one person.
A second set of figures comes from the 2026 report of the Agency for Health Technology Assessment (AOTM). For 2019 it cites 58.2% of Polish adults with overweight or obesity, against about 53% as the EU average. Obesity measured strictly by BMI stood at 18%. A BMI above 40 occurs in about 300 thousand people, and a BMI above 35 in more than 1.5 million. These two thresholds are the same ones that decide whether a bariatric operation is discussed at all.
Our consultation uses the same logic. Surgery is generally justified at a BMI above 40, or above 35 when serious related conditions are present. BMI is body weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. Sometimes the operation is considered at lower values, when non-surgical methods have not worked. So a resident of Szczecin who measures 1.70 m and weighs 120 kg, for example, would first calculate the index and then bring the result to the conversation.
The numbers also show why individual assessment matters. A town of roughly 380 thousand people, with a metropolitan area of about 777,000, contains patients at very different points on this scale. Some have a BMI above 40. Others sit between 35 and 40 and live with type 2 diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, fatty liver disease or joint disease. All of these conditions appear in the list of problems that bariatric surgery can help with. The coordinator asks about height, weight and these conditions first, then passes the information to the bariatric doctor.
In Poland, bariatric surgery is a service financed by the National Health Fund (NFZ). It sits in the group F14, "surgical treatment of obesity". According to the AOTM report of July 2026, the entry criterion is a BMI of at least 40 kg/m² from the age of 18 (ICD-10 code E66.0). A BMI of 35-40 kg/m² qualifies where surgically induced weight loss may improve an obesity-related disease.
The history of this arrangement is short. Since 1 January 2017 the NFZ tariff has had a separate group covering all three types of bariatric operation. Before that, only gastric banding figured as a bariatric procedure in the tariff. The Ministry of Health later set up the KOS-BAR pilot programme (2021) for severe obesity treated surgically. It uses the same entry thresholds, names type 2 diabetes and hypertension as examples of conditions that surgery may improve, and designated 15 centres with about 2,907 patients planned. The pre-operative phase there usually lasts 3-6 months with a multidisciplinary team.
The general NFZ rules matter here. Services outside the catalogues of state-funded benefits are not financed by the fund. Within the funded range, treatment is in most cases free for the insured patient. Health contributions are 9% of personal income, of which 7.75% is deducted from tax and 1.25% is paid directly to the NFZ. Uninsured patients pay the full cost of services.
Waiting lists have their own rule. For a given service, a patient may be entered on the list with only one provider. The original referral must be delivered within 14 working days of entering the list. We could not find a published waiting time for bariatric operations in the sources we use, so we do not quote one. As a reference point only, a Ministry of Health reply of August 2025 on orthopaedics reported average waits for joint replacement of 172 days for hips and 214 days for knees in 2024. That reply concerned a different specialty, and the source does not state clearly whether the figures are national. NIK's headline for its report on obesity care speaks of ever longer queues, so it is reasonable to plan for a wait in the public system.
Our service does not replace this route and does not compete with the referral process. It is a private, online-led alternative. Many patients first ask for a free consultation, compare what they hear with what the public programme requires, and then decide.
A person in Szczecin deciding between public and private care is really comparing four things: time, preparation, choice of method and follow-up.
**Time.** In the public route, the list and the 3-6 month pre-operative phase described for KOS-BAR set the pace. In our process, the sequence is a free online consultation, an agreed plan, a reserved date and tests. The operation date is agreed with you before anything is booked, so you can see the calendar in advance.
**Preparation.** Both routes ask for tests. For us, the tests are blood and urine analyses, an ECG, an ultrasound and a gastroscopy, plus visits to specialists. The doctor gives you the exact list at the consultation. Because the consultation is online, you can ask a general practitioner or a laboratory to do routine tests locally and send us the results.
**Method.** Two procedures appear in the comparison: sleeve gastrectomy, which reduces stomach volume and suits obesity without marked reflux, and gastric bypass, which reduces stomach volume and changes the food path, and suits obesity with diabetes or reflux. Both are done under general anaesthesia with 1-5 days in hospital. The clinic also carries out mini gastric bypass and SADI-S duodeno-ileal bypass. The choice is individual and depends on BMI, related conditions and your goals.
**Contraindications.** Some people are not candidates at all: those under 18, and those with malignant tumours, pregnancy, blood clotting disorders, severe chronic or mental illness, an acute illness or a flare-up of a chronic one, or less than six months since breastfeeding ended. The same list applies whichever route you choose. If one of these applies to you, say so in the first message.
Nothing here tells you which route to pick. The point is that the options can be laid side by side before any decision, and the first consultation does not commit you to surgery.
After the operation, the diet moves in stages from liquid to soft to solid food. The focus is protein and limiting high-calorie, fatty food. We do not have sourced facts about the typical Polish or Szczecin menu, so we describe the change in general terms and leave the specifics to your own routine.
What we can say is practical. Your coordinator asks what a normal day of eating looks like for you: how many meals, what you drink, and what you eat at work or at university. Szczecin is a university city, with the University of Szczecin alone at 35,000 students, plus Pomeranian Medical University, the Maritime University, the West Pomeranian University of Technology and the Art Academy. A patient who studies or works in that setting often has a fixed timetable, and a staged diet can be built around it.
High-calorie drinks deserve a separate mention, because avoiding them is named as a key part of staying at the new weight. Vitamins and mineral supplements also become a lasting part of life, since changed digestive anatomy means the body absorbs certain nutrients less well.
Public holidays shape the eating calendar too. Poland has 14 non-working days: 1 January, 6 January, Easter Sunday and Monday, 1 May, 3 May, Pentecost Sunday, Corpus Christi, 15 August, 1 November, 11 November, 24 December, and 25 and 26 December. Several of them fall in the weeks when families gather around a table. The plan we discuss includes how to handle a festive meal in the first weeks, and which dates are better left free of social commitments. This is a planning suggestion, not a medical rule.
Exercise follows the same gradual logic. Swimming is fine after 30 days, and other exercise is added gradually as weight drops. For a city built around water, with the Oder, the Regalica branch, Lake Dabie inside the city limits and the Szczecin Lagoon of 687 km² to the north, that detail is concrete. Clubs for sailing, diving and water polo exist in the city, and the first sessions in the water can be a milestone to plan for.
The package includes support for 12 months. One coordinator stays with you from day one, and a remote progress check is done by photos. Because the consultation is online, follow-up works the same way: a message, a photo, a test result, and a reply, with coordinators available round the clock on WhatsApp and Telegram.
The recovery timeline gives a frame. You spend 1-5 days under observation. Office work is possible after 2-4 weeks, and physical work after 1.5 months. The final result is usually reached 18-24 months after surgery. These are averages per method, for guidance only, and they depend on your anatomy and individual traits.
The local climate shapes the first months differently depending on the date of the operation. The sources give these normals for the Dabie station (1991-2020):
- January: mean maximum 3.0 °C, minimum -1.8 °C, with 42.7 hours of sunshine and 7.6 snowy days.
- February: maximum 4.5 °C, minimum -1.3 °C.
- July: mean maximum 24.3 °C, minimum 13.8 °C, with 246.3 hours of sunshine.
- August: maximum 24.0 °C.
- Humidity peaks at 89.1% in November.
- The year brings 23.7 snowy days, none from May to October.
For a patient recovering in January, short walks happen in cold, damp air with little daylight, so warm clothing and a realistic daily step goal are worth discussing. For a patient recovering in July, warm weather makes hydration a reminder to build into the day.
The city's calendar can also help or hinder. A marathon is organised in Szczecin in August, and the Pekao Szczecin Open men's tennis tournament is held every year in September. Patients can use such dates as long-range motivation, though the plan should follow your body and not the event. Whether any such goal is realistic is judged individually at follow-up.
Weight regain after bariatric surgery is possible, but very unlikely if you follow the doctor's advice. Proper eating, avoiding high-calorie drinks and regular follow-up with the specialists are key. Pregnancy is also part of the plan: doctors advise holding off at least 12-18 months, while the body stabilises and weight reaches target values.
Bariatric surgery is a publicly financed NFZ service in group F14, "surgical treatment of obesity". The criterion is a BMI of at least 40 kg/m² from age 18, or 35-40 kg/m² where weight loss may improve an obesity-related disease. Services outside the fund's catalogues are not financed. Whether your own case meets the public criteria is decided by the doctors in that system. Our online consultation is a separate, free first step and does not commit you to anything.
A consultation is only a conversation and a plan, so it does not change your place on any list. The NFZ rule is that for a given service you may be entered on a waiting list with only one provider, and the original referral must be delivered within 14 working days of entering the list. If you are already on a list, mention it in your first message. The coordinator can then explain how the two routes fit together before you decide on anything.
According to the NIK table based on 2022 data, the West Pomeranian voivodeship has 392 thousand adults with obesity and a share of 28.9%, while the national figure is 29.8%. The chart is titled as a share of patients with overweight and obesity, so the measure is not identical to prevalence. The two numbers are close, which suggests the region is near the national picture. For your own decision, your BMI and related conditions matter more than any regional average.
A BMI calculation needs only your height and weight, and you can send them in the first message. Before surgery the usual tests are blood and urine analyses, an ECG, an ultrasound and a gastroscopy, plus visits to specialists. The doctor gives the exact list at the consultation, so it is sensible to wait for it before ordering anything. Photos and any existing test results can be sent on WhatsApp or Telegram.
The season does not change the medical choice, but it changes the first weeks. In January the mean maximum is 3.0 °C with only 42.7 hours of sunshine, and humidity peaks in November at 89.1%. July has a mean maximum of 24.3 °C. After the operation you stay 1-5 days under observation, and office work is possible after 2-4 weeks. Choose a date that leaves room for rest and for short, regular walks. Public holidays such as 1 November, 11 November and the December dates are also worth checking against the plan.
Support lasts 12 months. One coordinator is with you from day one, and progress is checked remotely by photos. After discharge you receive advice on diet and recovery, and scheduled check-ups of your well-being, weight and test results. You can write to the coordinators on WhatsApp or Telegram around the clock, and they book your follow-ups with the doctor. Routine blood tests can be done wherever is convenient for you, and the results are sent to the team.
Swimming is fine after 30 days, according to the recovery guidance. Other exercise is added gradually as weight drops, and physical work is possible after about 1.5 months. These are averages and depend on your anatomy and how you feel. Open-water swimming and sailing involve cold water for much of the year, so ask the doctor at follow-up before returning to them. The conversation is easier if you describe in advance what sport you do.
