Weight loss surgery in Bydgoszcz step by step

Surgery is usually justified with a BMI above 40, or above 35 when serious related conditions are present, and sometimes at lower values if other approaches have failed. People in Bydgoszcz who have carried 30 kg or more above normal for years, whose weight returns after every diet, or who live with type 2 diabetes, hypertension or joint pain are typical candidates.

The final result is reached in 1.5–2 years. Throughout the first year the team tracks weight loss, monitors tests and answers questions about diet and recovery, providing psychological and medical support at every stage. For patients in Bydgoszcz, regular follow-up with specialists and avoiding high-calorie drinks are the keys to keeping the result for good.

Starting is simple. Leave your name and phone number or write in any messenger, and a coordinator will arrange a free consultation. In about 15 minutes the surgeon will say whether bariatric surgery is right for you and which method fits. For people from Bydgoszcz, this conversation is the fastest way to replace temporary fixes with a lasting solution.

Obesity in Bydgoszcz and Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship: what the figures show

Bydgoszcz is a city county and the seat of Bydgoszcz County. It is also one of the two capitals of Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship, in historical Kuyavia in northern Poland. Polish statistics put the population at 321,100 at the end of 2025, spread over roughly 176 km². The older English-language figure of 330,038 for the end of 2022 is higher, and the sources themselves vary between 2021 and 2022. The exact number matters less than the scale: a city of this size produces a steady flow of people who ask whether surgical treatment of obesity is an option for them.

The best-documented picture comes from the national audit office (NIK) and its 2022 data. Nationally, 9,185 thousand adults live with obesity, which is 29.8% of the population. For Kujawsko-Pomorskie the same table lists 433 thousand adults and 26.4%. The chart is titled as a share of patients with overweight and obesity, so it is not a pure prevalence rate and should not be compared directly with a BMI-based survey. The NIK text adds that overweight and obesity together affect about 60–70% of residents, depending on the voivodeship. The title of the NIK publication also says that queues for treatment are getting longer.

A second set of numbers comes from a 2026 assessment of bariatric care. For Poland in 2019, 58.2% of people over 18 had overweight or obesity, and obesity measured by BMI was 18%. A BMI above 40 occurs in about 300 thousand people, and above 35 in over 1.5 million. The gap between those two groups matters, because the second group is five times larger than the first and is the one for whom the indication is decided by accompanying illnesses.

In practice this means that many residents of Bydgoszcz who ask about surgery are not in the group with the most extreme BMI. They sit in the middle band, where the decision depends on blood pressure, glucose, sleep apnea, joints, liver and the history of earlier attempts to lose weight. City Medical Centre works with exactly this question in an online consultation. The usual starting point is a BMI above 40, or above 35 with related health conditions. The doctor confirms during the consultation whether surgery suits you.

What the national health fund covers, and why people still look for another route

Bariatric surgery is a publicly financed service in Poland. In the National Health Fund (NFZ) tariff it sits in the group F14, "Chirurgiczne leczenie otyłości". The 2026 assessment describes the entry criteria as a BMI of at least 40 kg/m² from the age of 18 (ICD-10 code E66.0), and a BMI of 35–40 kg/m² where surgically induced weight loss may improve obesity-related disease. Before 1 January 2017 only gastric banding appeared as a bariatric procedure in the tariff. Since then a separate group covers all three types of bariatric operation.

The general NFZ rule is straightforward. Services that are not in the catalogues of funded services are not financed by the Fund. Within the funded range, treatment is in most cases free for the insured patient. Health insurance in Poland is a contribution of 9% of personal income, of which 7.75% is deducted from tax and 1.25% paid directly to NFZ. Uninsured patients pay the full cost of services. So the first practical question for anyone in Bydgoszcz is whether they are insured and whether their BMI and health situation fit the public criteria.

The second question is time. NFZ waiting-list rules say that for a given service a patient may be entered on the list with only one provider, and that the original referral must be delivered within 14 working days of entering the list. That is a firm administrative step, and missing it can send you back to the start. Anyone who is already on a public list should keep that in mind and ask about it openly. An online consultation with City Medical Centre does not require you to give up a place in a public queue. It can run alongside it, so that you understand your options while you wait.

The Ministry of Health also launched the KOS-BAR pilot in 2021, a programme of comprehensive care for severe obesity treated surgically. It has 15 designated centres and about 2,907 patients planned. Qualification is at BMI 40 or more, or at BMI 35–40 where surgery may improve conditions such as type 2 diabetes or hypertension. The pre-operative phase usually lasts 3–6 months with a multidisciplinary team. The pilot shows the logic of public care: a long, structured preparation, with limited places.

Some patients choose a private route because they want a different pace or a different choice of method. At City Medical Centre the main methods are sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass, and the centre carries out four main types of bariatric operation: sleeve gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, mini gastric bypass (MGB) and SADI-S duodeno-ileal bypass. The choice depends on BMI, related conditions and your goals. Neither route is better in every case. It is more useful to compare the criteria, the preparation and the follow-up in writing before you decide.

Weighing up the two routes from Bydgoszcz

The decision is easier to make when you put the public and private routes side by side. Here are the questions worth asking.

First, are you insured, and does your documented BMI fall within the F14 criteria? If your BMI is 40 or more, or 35–40 with an illness that surgery may improve, the public route is open to you in principle. If your BMI is lower but you have tried non-surgical methods without success, the service description says surgery is sometimes considered at lower values too. That is a conversation for the consultation, not a promise.

Second, what do you expect from the preparation? The public pilot describes 3–6 months of work with a multidisciplinary team. At City Medical Centre the plan begins with a consultation, followed by tests before surgery: blood and urine tests, an ECG, an ultrasound and a gastroscopy, plus visits to specialists. The doctor gives you the exact list at the consultation. If you already have recent results from your family doctor in Bydgoszcz, you can send photos of them on WhatsApp or Telegram so the coordinator can see what is already done.

Third, how will you be supported afterwards? In the public system, follow-up depends on the centre that performed the operation. Here, the support lasts 12 months, with one coordinator from day one and remote progress checks by photos. If you live in Bydgoszcz and the operation takes place elsewhere, that remote contact becomes the thread that keeps your plan in one place.

Fourth, are you suitable? Surgery is not right for every patient. The contraindications are age under 18, malignant tumors, pregnancy, blood clotting disorders, severe chronic and mental illness, acute illness or flare-ups of chronic disease, and less than six months since breastfeeding ended. A coordinator can tell you in a first message which column you are likely to fall into, and the doctor confirms it.

None of this replaces your own doctor. A referral, a diabetes review or a blood pressure check with your family doctor remains useful whichever route you pick. Bring those results into the online conversation.

Eating after the operation: a Bydgoszcz kitchen, a new routine

The diet after bariatric surgery moves in stages from liquid to soft to solid food. The main focus is protein and restricting high-calorie, fatty food. Vitamins and mineral supplements become a lasting part of life, because the body absorbs certain nutrients less well once the digestive anatomy has changed. Avoiding high-calorie drinks is also one of the keys to avoiding weight regain, which is possible but very unlikely if you follow the doctor's advice.

There is no source here that describes what people in Bydgoszcz usually eat, so it would be wrong to claim a typical local menu. What can be said is practical. The recovery routine depends on your kitchen and your calendar, and the calendar of Poland has some fixed points. There are 14 public non-working days: 1 January, 6 January (Epiphany), Easter Sunday and Monday, 1 May, 3 May, Pentecost Sunday, Corpus Christi, 15 August, 1 November, 11 November, 24 December (since 2025), and 25 and 26 December. Family meals cluster around some of these days, and large shared meals are hard to manage in the early stages of the diet.

A useful habit is to plan the first weeks after discharge so that they do not fall on a holiday week. Shops are closed on public holidays, so you want your protein products, liquids and supplements bought beforehand. If your operation is planned for November 2026, for example, 11 November and the period around 24–26 December are the dates to arrange food around. Tell the coordinator the dates you cannot avoid and the plan can be shaped to them.

The weather also affects routine. The coldest months in Bydgoszcz are December, January and February. In January the mean daily maximum is 1.1 °C and the mean minimum −3.7 °C; December is 2.0 °C and −2.4 °C; February 2.7 °C and −3.0 °C. Humidity is highest in November (90.5%) and December (89.3%). These are not conditions that tempt anyone outside, and a recovering patient may be tempted to stay in and snack. A written meal plan for dark months helps: set meal times, protein first, and no high-calorie drinks. In July the mean maximum reaches 24.6 °C, with a minimum of 13.7 °C, and warm weather makes it easier to drink enough fluids and walk.

Moving again: the Brda, the canal and Myślęcinek

The doctors give guidance on timing. Office work is possible after 2–4 weeks, physical work after 1.5 months. Swimming is fine after 30 days, and other exercise is added gradually as weight drops. The hospital stay is 1–5 days under observation. The final result is expected 18–24 months after the operation, so movement is a long-term project, not a short one.

Bydgoszcz has some useful geography for it. The Brda flows about 28 km through the city before joining the Vistula at Brdyujście, and the Bydgoszcz Canal crosses the western part for about 6.5 km. The city centre has Mill Island (Wyspa Młyńska), which exists because the Brda was dammed there, with the Młynówka river around it. Such water-side routes are flat or close to it, and the city lies at an elevation of 60 m. A gentle route near water is an easy way to build up walking time in the first weeks, once the doctor allows it.

The city park Myślęcinek covers 830 ha and is described as the largest city park in Poland. A park of that size offers distances to choose from. In the weeks after the operation you can start with short walks and extend them as you feel stronger. Your own limit is the guide here, and the advice from the doctor comes first. No local trail or route is part of the medical plan, so treat these places as options for a walk and not as a prescription.

There are also seasons in the numbers. Annual precipitation is 532.3 mm on 158.4 days with at least 0.1 mm. July is the wettest month at 83.4 mm, followed by June at 56.7 mm and August at 55.6 mm; February (26.3 mm) and April (28.2 mm) are the driest. Rain falls on roughly 158 days a year, so it makes sense to keep an indoor alternative for walking. Home exercise and a short indoor routine keep the habit going on wet days. The sunshine total of 1,509 hours a year given in a Polish source has no stated period, so it is only a rough guide.

Follow-up online: the first year and beyond

Distance is a normal part of this service. You are in Bydgoszcz, the consultation is online, and the coordinators answer around the clock on WhatsApp and Telegram. The plan has clear steps. You send photos and get a free assessment from the doctor, then confirm the plan and dates before anything is booked. The final price is fixed in the contract. Preparation includes the tests listed above, and the hospital stay is supervised by doctors.

After discharge the follow-up has a purpose. It consists of advice on diet and recovery, scheduled check-ups of well-being, weight and test results, and support from the clinic team for a year. A coordinator keeps in contact while you recover, answers questions and books follow-up visits. This is a long-term arrangement. A student city is likely to have many people working irregular hours, and Bydgoszcz has about 35,000 students across 15 universities. For anyone with a changing timetable, round-the-clock messaging and photo-based progress checks are easier to fit in than fixed appointments.

A good rhythm is to agree on check-ins at the start. For instance, you can ask for the first remote check in the week of 16 November 2026 if the operation is planned in early November. After that, keep a simple log of weight, protein, fluids, supplements and symptoms, and send it with your photos. The coordinator then has something concrete to pass to the doctor. If something feels wrong, you write straight away and do not wait for the next date.

Pregnancy needs its own note. It can happen after bariatric surgery, though doctors advise holding off at least 12–18 months, while the body becomes stable and nutritional status normalizes. Anyone planning a family should raise this at the first consultation, and the contraindication about the period after breastfeeding applies as well.

One more point on realism. Weight regain is possible. The factors the doctors name are proper eating, avoiding high-calorie drinks and regular follow-up. The aim of the first year of support is to make those three habits normal before the formal support ends.

If I am insured through NFZ in Bydgoszcz, can I still ask City Medical Centre for an online consultation?

Yes. Insurance and the public waiting list are separate matters from an online consultation. You can ask the coordinator for an assessment of your BMI, health conditions and suitable method while keeping any place you already have with a public provider. The NFZ rule that you can be on a waiting list with only one provider for a given service applies to public lists, so check it before you change anything. Nothing in the first consultation commits you to surgery.

Which BMI values matter for the public route and for the plan I would get?

The 2026 assessment of public bariatric care describes a BMI of 40 kg/m² or more from age 18, and a BMI of 35–40 kg/m² where weight loss by surgery may improve an obesity-related disease. City Medical Centre uses the same general logic: usually a BMI over 40, or over 35 with related health conditions. Sometimes surgery is considered at lower values when non-surgical methods have not worked. The doctor confirms during the consultation whether it suits you.

How long is preparation likely to take compared with the national pilot programme?

The KOS-BAR pilot describes a pre-operative phase of usually 3–6 months with a multidisciplinary team. At City Medical Centre preparation starts after the consultation, with tests such as blood and urine analysis, an ECG, an ultrasound and a gastroscopy, plus specialist visits. The doctor gives you the exact list. The timetable depends on your results and dates, and the coordinator will agree it with you before anything is booked.

Can I plan the operation around public holidays in Poland?

Yes, and it is a good idea. There are 14 public non-working days, including Easter Sunday and Monday, 1 November, 11 November, and 24, 25 and 26 December. Shops are closed on those days, so food, protein products and supplements need to be bought beforehand. Tell your coordinator which dates you want to avoid and the dates for tests, the hospital stay and follow-ups can be arranged around them.

Does the cold, humid winter in Bydgoszcz affect recovery?

It does not change the medical plan, but it affects habits. In January the mean maximum is 1.1 °C and the minimum −3.7 °C, and humidity peaks in November (90.5%) and December (89.3%). The doctor allows swimming after 30 days and adds other exercise gradually, so in winter many people choose short indoor routines and brief walks. A written meal plan helps in the dark months, with protein first and no high-calorie drinks. If you have symptoms, write to the coordinator at any hour.

Where can I walk in the first weeks, once the doctor allows it?

The city has flat routes along the Brda, which flows about 28 km through Bydgoszcz, and around Mill Island in the centre. The Myślęcinek park covers 830 ha, so you can choose short or long distances. Start with brief walks and lengthen them gradually as you feel stronger. Return to office work is expected after 2–4 weeks and to physical work after 1.5 months, but these are averages. Your anatomy and recovery are individual.

How do remote check-ups work if I live in Bydgoszcz and not near the hospital?

Support lasts 12 months. One coordinator stays with you from the first day, and progress is checked remotely through photos, with check-ups of well-being, weight and test results. You write on WhatsApp or Telegram at any time. The coordinator answers questions during recovery and books follow-up visits with the doctor. The agreed schedule is fixed in advance, so that you know when each check is due.

Why is diet advice so strict, and what if I regain weight?

After the operation the body absorbs some nutrients less well, so the diet moves from liquid to soft to solid, with the focus on protein and limiting fatty, high-calorie food. Vitamins and minerals become a lasting part of life. Regain is possible but very unlikely if you follow the doctor's advice, avoid high-calorie drinks and attend regular follow-ups. If your weight starts to rise, tell the coordinator early so the doctor can review what has changed.
