Weight loss surgery in Gdansk step by step

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass creates a small 50–70 ml pouch at the top of the stomach and connects it straight to the small intestine. It is considered the gold standard for a BMI over 45–50 with type 2 diabetes, bringing excess weight loss of 75–85%. Anyone researching bypass in Gdansk should know that it requires lifelong vitamin and mineral supplements.

The final result is reached in 1.5–2 years. Throughout the first year the team tracks weight loss, monitors tests and answers questions about diet and recovery, providing psychological and medical support at every stage. For patients in Gdansk, regular follow-up with specialists and avoiding high-calorie drinks are the keys to keeping the result for good.

A permanent team — not a duty shift — handles your case, and the whole package is transparent. Included are the operation, 24/7 care in the ward, meals, nursing and a personal coordinator from day one, plus support throughout the first year. Gdansk patients also get a contractual result guarantee. Book a free consultation to discuss your situation.

Reading the coastline: why a Baltic setting shapes a bariatric plan

Gdansk sits where the Motlawa River meets the Vistula, close to the Gulf of Gdansk. The setting matters for planning because the body is asked to change habits, not just to heal. The sea, the river embankments and the beaches along the bay are flat, open and easy to walk. That suits the gentle activity that bariatric surgery recovery calls for. The surgical stage is short by comparison: the stay is 1–5 days under observation, and the longer work happens afterwards at home.

The city does not stand alone. The Tricity urban area, which links Gdansk with Gdynia and Sopot, was put at 960,000 people in 2024, and the metropolitan area at 1,090,000. Gdansk itself had 487,371 residents. Another count of the three towns gives 760,463 inhabitants as of 1 January 2024. The two figures use different definitions of the area, so they should not be mixed. For a patient, the practical meaning is simple: the Tricity is large enough that many people will be dealing with the same questions about weight, referrals and follow-up. Still, each person's route is individual, and a conversation with a coordinator is the quickest way to find out which parts apply to you.

This is why the online format fits Gdansk well. You do not need to arrange your week around a consultation room. You send photographs and a few details on WhatsApp or Telegram, a coordinator replies, and the doctor assesses your case without any commitment to an operation. The first consultation is free. The doctor names the final price and it is fixed in the contract before anything is booked. The only things that need your physical presence are the tests before surgery and the operation itself, and the plan explains in advance which is which.

Many people begin by asking whether the operation is "for them". The honest answer comes in two parts. Surgery is usually considered at a BMI above 40, or above 35 when related conditions are present. It is sometimes considered at lower values when non-surgical methods have not worked. The BMI is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared, so you can calculate it at your kitchen table in Gdansk before writing to anyone. The coordinator will repeat the calculation, and the doctor will then look at the whole picture: blood pressure, blood sugar, sleep, joints, liver and your history of earlier attempts to lose weight.

Public referral rules and what the national system does not list

The national health fund, NFZ, publishes information about which services it finances. Two points from that information matter here. First, services outside its list are not financed. Second, access to outpatient specialist care and to hospital treatment runs through a referral. If you are weighing public treatment against a private plan, the first step is to find out whether the procedure you need falls inside the list and under which conditions. Your family doctor and the fund's own patient information are the right places to confirm this, because rules and waiting arrangements differ between regions and change over time.

We cannot tell you from here how long a public waiting list is in your case, and we would not want to guess. What we can do is explain how the private route differs in structure. The online consultation is free and carries no obligation. After it you receive a written plan: the method, the list of tests, the stay and the price that will go into the contract. Because the price is fixed in the contract, nothing about it depends on a queue. Some patients use this plan to compare, and some use it to decide. Both are reasonable ways to use a free consultation.

If you hold a public referral for something related, such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes or sleep apnea, keep it. Bariatric surgery can help with these conditions, and the doctors you already see will need to know about any plan. The coordinator can describe which results and records are usually helpful to bring to the consultation. These typically include earlier blood tests, notes from your specialists and a list of the medicines you take. Having them ready makes the first conversation faster and the plan more precise.

Two methods are on the table in most conversations: sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass. The sleeve reduces the volume of the stomach, brings a feeling of fullness quickly and suits obesity without marked reflux. Gastric bypass reduces stomach volume and changes the path of food. It is chosen for obesity with diabetes or reflux, and it aims at weight loss and better metabolism. The clinic also carries out the Roux-en-Y bypass, the mini gastric bypass and the SADI-S duodeno-ileal bypass. The choice depends on BMI, related conditions and your goals. The doctor explains the reasoning during the consultation, so you are not asked to choose blindly.

Light, weather and the calendar: timing the operation around a Gdansk year

Timing is a real decision. Climate figures for Gdansk show the contrast clearly. In January the average daily high is +1.4 °C and the low is -3.4 °C. In July the high averages +21.0 °C. Sunshine over 1991–2020 totalled 259 hours in June, against 105 hours in October, 45 in November and only 32 in December. The UV index reaches 5 in June and July.

What does this have to do with an operation? Recovery is a matter of weeks, and the early weeks need rest, regular short walks and fluids. A recovery that falls in December means very few hours of daylight for those walks, so you would plan them for the middle of the day and keep them short. A recovery in June means long light evenings, but also a higher UV index, so you would take care with the sun on healing skin. The tiny cosmetic marks from the four punctures of 5 to 15 mm become almost invisible once healed, but sun on fresh skin is something to discuss with the doctor. Swimming is fine after 30 days. That fact matters for a city with beaches on the bay: if you want to swim at the seaside, count thirty days from the operation and add a margin.

The calendar matters as much as the weather. Polish public holidays include 1 November, 11 November and 24 December, which has been a day off since 1 February 2025. They also include Easter Monday and 25 and 26 December. If you work in an office, the usual time back at work is 2–4 weeks. If your job is physical, plan for about 1.5 months. Placing the operation just before a block of holidays can make the first days easier to cover. A recovery that runs from late November into the week of 24 December, for example, would give you a few days of quiet at home that do not cost leave. It also puts the festive meals near the stage when the diet is still liquid or soft. That is worth thinking through, and we cover it in the next section.

Because coordinators answer 24/7, a holiday does not interrupt contact. If you have a question on 11 November or on the evening of 24 December, you can write at once. Other things do close on those days: laboratories, your family doctor's practice and some pharmacies. Tests before surgery, which include blood and urine tests, an ECG, an ultrasound and a gastroscopy, are better scheduled in advance so that none of them falls on a closed day. The coordinator sends you the exact list after the consultation and helps you keep the order straight.

Eating after the operation when the table is full

Food culture is a part of life in every city, and Gdansk is no exception. We do not have sourced facts about specific local dishes, and we will not invent any. What can be said precisely is how the diet changes after surgery, because that part is set by the medical plan. In stages, your diet goes from liquid to soft to solid food. The main focus is protein, and you restrict high-calorie, fatty food. High-calorie drinks are best avoided too, as they are one of the commonest ways weight comes back.

So, instead of a list of dishes, here is a method you can apply to any meal at home or at a restaurant on the Tricity coast. Look first for protein. Then ask how the dish was cooked and how fatty it is. Then think about its texture, because during the early stages you will be on liquid and soft food only. The coordinator and the doctor explain at which stage each texture is allowed. They also explain what to do with family dinners, work lunches and invitations in the weeks that follow. A patient who has planned a few such situations in advance finds them much easier than one who meets them cold.

Vitamins are an essential part of this. As the anatomy of the digestive tract changes, the body absorbs some nutrients less well, so regular vitamin and mineral supplements become a lasting part of life. This is not a weakness of the operation but a feature of it, and it is better to understand it before the decision than after. The doctor will tell you which supplements are needed and how to check that they are doing their job. Some people keep a small note on the phone with doses and times. That habit makes it easy to share exactly what you take at every follow-up.

Family planning belongs here as well. Pregnancy after bariatric surgery can happen, but doctors advise waiting at least 12–18 months. During this period the body becomes stable, weight reaches its target values and nutritional status normalizes. If you expect to start a family within a couple of years, tell the coordinator from the very first message. It will affect timing and the plan for supplements, and it is far easier to arrange from the start.

Long-term follow-up without a clinic on the next street

The operation is the shortest part of the treatment. The full result appears 18–24 months after surgery, and support is built to cover that time. The package includes support for 12 months, and a coordinator stays with you from the first message. After you leave hospital, you receive advice on diet and recovery. Scheduled check-ups look at your well-being, weight and test results. A remote progress check by photographs is part of the plan, so a routine review does not require you to leave Gdansk.

Three coordinators share the work, each at a different stage. One answers the first questions and helps you choose a convenient date. Another supports your preparation and stays in touch during your stay at the clinic. The third keeps in contact while you recover, answers questions during recovery and books follow-up visits with the doctor. You do not need to repeat your history each time, because the notes are in one place. Messaging happens in the app you already use, which in practice means WhatsApp or Telegram, so you do not need an extra program.

What should you actually send during follow-up? It helps to agree this in advance. Typical items are a photograph taken in the same light and pose each time, your weight on a set day, notes on what you eat, your supplement routine and any symptoms that worry you. Your results from local laboratories can be photographed and sent too. With regular items like these, the doctor can see the trend rather than a single day. Regain is possible after bariatric surgery, but it is very unlikely if you follow the doctor's advice. Proper eating, avoiding high-calorie drinks and regular follow-up are key.

Exercise returns in steps. Swimming is fine after 30 days, and other exercise is added gradually as weight drops. Walking along the embankments or the beach is the simplest start, and on a cold January day with a high of +1.4 °C, a short walk in warm clothing counts just as well as a long one in July. The doctor will not ask you to do more than your body allows. A realistic habit kept for months does far more than an ambitious one that stops after two weeks.

Who it suits, who it does not, and how to find out in one evening

A clear list of conditions decides who is a candidate. The operation helps with excess weight, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, varicose veins, joint disease, fatty liver disease and reproductive health problems. It is not suitable under the age of 18, with malignant tumors, in pregnancy, with blood clotting disorders, with severe chronic and mental illness, during acute illness or a flare-up of a chronic disease, or in the first six months after breastfeeding has ended. If any of these applies, tell the coordinator openly, because it changes the plan or postpones it.

The simplest way to find out where you stand is to spend one evening on it. Calculate your BMI. Collect your latest test results and a list of medicines. Write down the attempts at weight loss you have already made, with dates and outcomes if you remember them. Then send a message on WhatsApp or Telegram, and a coordinator replies, usually within 15 minutes. The doctor reviews your information and tells you whether surgery looks suitable, which method may fit, and what the next step is. None of this obliges you to anything.

If you decide to go on, the route is clear. After the consultation and plan you reserve a date by paying a deposit by card or by bank transfer, with the terms fixed in the contract for medical services. You do the tests, the operation is performed under general anaesthesia through four small punctures, and you stay under observation for 1–5 days. Then recovery begins, and with it the part where your own habits do most of the work. This is a medical decision, and it should be taken calmly. A free first conversation exists precisely so that you can take it with full information.

Does the cold season in Gdansk change when I should plan the operation?

It can affect comfort, not safety. In January the average daily high is +1.4 °C and the low -3.4 °C, and December has only 32 hours of sunshine. Short walks are part of early recovery, so you would simply plan them for the middle of the day and dress warmly. In June the days are long, with 259 hours of sunshine, but the UV index reaches 5, so healing skin needs protection. The doctor confirms the timing at the consultation.

Which public holidays should I keep in mind when I schedule tests and recovery?

The Polish holidays include 1 November, 11 November, Easter Monday and 24, 25 and 26 December. Since 1 February 2025, 24 December has been a day off. Laboratories and family doctors may be closed on such days, so it is wise to arrange the tests before surgery earlier. Coordinators answer 24/7, so you can still write to them on a holiday.

Will the national health fund pay for a plan made through an online consultation here?

The fund's published information says that services outside its list are not financed, and that specialist outpatient care and hospital treatment go through a referral. Whether a given procedure is covered in your case is something to confirm with your family doctor and the fund. The plan we give you is a separate one: the price is fixed in the contract, and the first consultation is free and without obligation.

I live in the Tricity but not in Gdansk itself. Does that change anything?

Not for the online part. The Tricity links Gdansk, Gdynia and Sopot, with an urban area of 960,000 people in 2024 and a metropolitan area of 1,090,000. Consultations, the plan and follow-up checks by photograph work the same wherever you are. Only the tests before surgery and the stay itself need to be arranged in person, and the coordinator will explain how.

Can I swim in the Gulf of Gdansk after the operation?

Swimming is fine after 30 days. It is sensible to add a margin and to ask the doctor at a follow-up check, especially if the cuts have healed more slowly. The marks from the four punctures of 5 to 15 mm become almost invisible once healed, but fresh skin needs protection from the sun, and the UV index reaches 5 in June and July.

How should I handle family meals and festive tables in the first weeks?

Your diet moves from liquid to soft to solid food in stages, with a focus on protein and limits on high-calorie, fatty food. Plan ahead: ask what is on the menu, choose protein first and keep portions in line with your stage. If the operation falls close to a holiday week, tell the coordinator so that the timetable and the diet stage fit together.

How long before I can work and be active again?

Office work is usually possible after 2–4 weeks, and physical work after about 1.5 months. Swimming is fine after 30 days, and other exercise is added gradually as weight drops. The stay itself is 1–5 days under observation, and the final result appears 18–24 months after surgery.

What if I want children later?

Pregnancy after bariatric surgery can happen, but doctors advise waiting at least 12–18 months. During that time the body becomes stable, weight reaches its target values and nutritional status normalizes. Mention your plans in the first message so the timetable and the supplements can be arranged around them.
