FAQ

Rhinoplasty:
questions patients ask

Rhinoplasty (nose job) — among the most delicate and widely requested plastic surgeries, designed to reshape the nose to match the individual proportions of the nose and the whole face. Modern rhinoplasty goes beyond changing how the nose looks — it is complex surgical work aimed at an aesthetic result without putting health at risk.

About nose surgery for patients from Florence

A nose that fits the face changes the whole impression while keeping you recognisable. That is the principle behind rhinoplasty: correcting the hump, width, tip or nostrils in line with facial proportions. People in Florence who browse before-and-after photos online should instead discuss at a consultation what modern rhinoplasty can and cannot do in their specific case.

Preparation begins about 21 days before surgery, when the plastic surgeon hands over the list of tests. Three to five days before, stop smoking and alcohol, cut salty, fatty and spicy foods and avoid peels or scrubs. On the day itself, the last food and drink should be at least six hours before the operation. This routine is the same for every Florence patient.

One price, $4,200 (≈ €3,750), applies to open and closed techniques, tip work and septorhinoplasty alike. It includes general anaesthesia, a day in the inpatient unit, doctor monitoring and a free check-up afterwards, and the clinic gives a lifetime guarantee on the result. Florence residents can start with a free consultation: the doctor examines the nose and names the exact figure.

What patients write after this operation. Reviews are translated from the original language.

Ekaterina Ivanova

For a long time I was self-conscious about the length of my nose, until a friend who had had rhinoplasty recommended this clinic. At the very first consultation they set the date of surgery and explained every stage in detail. The rhinoplasty under general anaesthesia was performed by Mareta Meirieva: the swelling went down quickly, and after just a week my nose looked natural and neat. Modern equipment, attentive staff and appointments without delays made the whole process comfortable. I recommend the clinic to anyone who values professionalism and a quality result.

Rhinoplasty

Olga Vasilyeva

This was my first visit to the clinic, for rhinoseptoplasty, and to be honest I was very nervous. At the consultation they explained every stage of the operation and recovery in detail, which calmed me down straight away. The operation was performed by Mareta Meirieva: the swelling started to go down on the third day, and the result is visible to the naked eye. Everything inside is sterile and pleasant, the atmosphere inspires trust, and the staff are always responsive. I thank the clinic for the high level of service and the warm approach!

Rhinoplasty

Marina Samarina

Everything was first-class: clean, cosy and calm. Booking and choosing the right date was easy. The nose operation went smoothly and the nerve block was done perfectly: now I breathe freely without nasal drops! It is a real lifesaver for anyone tired of endless prescriptions and ineffective procedures. I recommend it to everyone who values professionalism and results.

Rhinoplasty

Viktoria Petrova

I recently had rhinoplasty and I am absolutely delighted. At the consultation they told me about every stage in detail, so I went into surgery fully prepared. The operation went smoothly: they straightened the bridge of my nose and made the nostrils symmetrical, and the shape came out very neat. The swelling lasted a little longer than I expected, but they explained straight away that full recovery takes more time. No unpleasant surprises, everything was within the normal range. I recommend the clinic to anyone looking for a confident result and an attentive attitude.

Breathing first: the nose in Florence's damp winters and dry summers

Florence sits in a basin ringed by the hills of Careggi, Fiesole, Settignano, Arcetri, Poggio Imperiale and Bellosguardo, with the Arno running through it. The 1991-2020 climate figures show what that means for a nose. The annual mean relative humidity is 66.7%, rising to 71.5% in January and dropping to 60.6% in July. Winter is cold and damp, with a January mean low of 2.1 °C and about 28.5 nights a year below freezing. Summer is hot and bright, with a July mean high of 32.3 °C and an average of 71 days with a maximum of 30 °C or more. A nose that is slightly blocked all year tends to feel worse at both ends of this cycle.

This is why a consultation for rhinoplasty in Florence should begin with breathing, not with the profile photo. The operation is described as one that adjusts appearance and improves breathing when airflow is restricted. The list of problems it can help with includes a deviated septum, marked breathing problems, nasal polyps and nose injury, alongside the aesthetic reasons: a hump, a wide bridge, a bulbous tip, asymmetric cartilage or nostrils. When you write to the coordinator on WhatsApp or Telegram, mention both the shape you dislike and any trouble breathing. Say which side is blocked, whether it changes between a heated room and the cold street, and whether it worsens at night. The doctor can then judge whether you need pure rhinoplasty or rhinoseptoplasty, the combined operation for the septum and the outer shape.

Photos are the starting point of the online consultation. Take them in daylight by a window, without a filter, with the face straight, then turned to each side, then from below and from above. Florence has about 2,246 hours of sunshine a year, so good light is easy to find in most months, but January has only about 93 hours. In winter, shoot near the brightest window you have and avoid yellow bulbs, which flatten the shadows that show a hump or a tip.

There is one more point about the season. The medical text lists inflammation of the ears, throat, nose or eyes among the contraindications. A heavy winter cold, a sinus flare-up or an eye infection is therefore not a small matter to hide from the doctor. If you have one when the date approaches, report it at once through your coordinator. The plan can then be adjusted before anything is booked, rather than on the day.

People with seasonal allergies should also describe them honestly, including which months are worst and what they take. This is information for the doctor, not a reason to put off asking. The consultation is free, carries no obligation, and the doctor tells you directly if surgery would not help in your case.

Glasses, sunshine and the frontal edge of the hair: planning the first weeks

Florence is a bright city. Annual mean daily sunshine is about 50% of the possible maximum, and July reaches 313.1 hours. If you wear glasses, whether corrective or sun lenses, the first weeks after a nose operation are the time to think about them. Frames rest on exactly the part of the face that has just been worked on. Before the date is fixed, ask the doctor and the coordinator how long glasses should stay off the nose and what you can use in the meantime. Contact lenses or a lighter option for daily tasks may be worth arranging beforehand. The doctor decides this individually, and the text gives no fixed period, so do not rely on a figure from a forum.

The nasal splint is the visible part of recovery. At City Medical Centre you can choose its colour: purple, gold, green, light blue, pink, yellow, raspberry or carbon. It may sound like a trivial detail, but it changes how you feel while going out. For a Florentine summer, pick a colour you can live with in strong sunlight. For an autumn or winter date, a darker tone may match your coat and scarf better. Either way, treat the splint period as time you spend deliberately away from social photographs.

Sun protection deserves a conversation with the doctor, not a guess. After the operation the skin and tissues of the nose are in recovery, and bright July light (the mean daily high that month is 32.3 °C) is not the same as a grey January afternoon. Ask how to protect the area outdoors when you leave the clinic and during follow-up. Do not improvise with sun products on the first days; only apply what the doctor has approved.

Your coordinator can help you list practical points before the date: who will help at home, what you will eat, how you will get through the first evening, and which messages you will send to work. The inpatient stay is one day, so the plan has to cover the first night at home and the days after discharge. You are not left alone for this. After the operation you receive a recovery programme, and check-ups are set at 7 days, then at 3 and 6 months. Consultations with the doctor stay free for a year afterwards.

Putting the operation between Florence's events

Florence runs on a visible calendar. The Scoppio del Carro takes place on Easter Sunday in Piazza del Duomo, with the cart drawn from Porta al Prato. In June the Calcio Fiorentino is played in Piazza Santa Croce: two semi-finals in the third week and a final on 24 June, the feast of St John the Baptist, the city's patron saint. These are days when many people are photographed and when family gatherings are likely. If you want your nose to look settled by one of them, plan backwards from the date and talk to the doctor about the margin, not forward from a hopeful guess.

Take Easter 2027, which falls on 28 March. The service text gives no figure for how long swelling lasts, and it says that recovery times shown are typical averages for general guidance only. Your own anatomy decides the real extent of correction and recovery, and the doctor confirms it at the consultation. So do not choose a date just a few days before an occasion and hope. A sensible approach is to book the operation well ahead of the event, leave a generous gap, and ask the doctor in advance what your face is likely to look like at that moment. A 3D model of the future result is made at the consultation, but a model shows the intended shape, not how much swelling will remain on a given day.

The preparation window matters as well. Preparation should begin 21 days before the operation. At the first appointment you receive the list of required tests, which includes a complete blood count, biochemistry, a coagulation panel, a chest X-ray and an X-ray of the sinuses. Count those three weeks into your calendar, along with the time the operation itself takes: 1.5 to 3 hours depending on complexity, under general anaesthesia, followed by one day in the clinic. If a family holiday, a work deadline or a celebration falls in the middle of this period, tell your coordinator early.

Italian public holidays also shape planning: 1 January, 6 January, Easter Monday, 25 April, 1 May, 2 June, 15 August, 4 October (St Francis), 1 November, 8 December, 25 and 26 December, and every Sunday. Local laboratories, imaging centres and offices work differently around these dates, so the tests before surgery are best arranged well ahead of them. The coordinators answer 24/7 on WhatsApp and Telegram, but a local laboratory in Florence may not, so check how the days fall before you book. A date placed just after a long holiday weekend is often easier for tests, rest and follow-up than one placed just before it.

Students and people who work in academic life can plan around term timetables. The University of Florence has about 50,000 students, founded in 1859, with roots in the Studio Fiorentino of 1321. If you are among them, think about exam periods and lab days. A one-day clinic stay is short, but the days of rest at home are not zero, and your presence at lectures or in the workplace needs a plan.

What the national health service covers, and what it leaves to private care

Italy's Servizio Sanitario Nazionale was established in 1978 and gives universal coverage to citizens and residents. It runs on a regional basis under the Ministry of Health, which sets the national Essential Levels of Care. For anyone living in Tuscany, the first question is therefore a fair one: will the public system pay for a nose operation?

Purely aesthetic surgery is not paid for by the SSN. A consumer article from January 2024 puts it as accessible only through private services. The same article describes what the SSN does cover: reconstructive surgery after trauma, burns or mastectomy, and defined functional cases. It names rhinoplasty for severe septal deviation or breathing problems as an example. That distinction is practical. If your reason is mainly appearance, you should expect to arrange it privately. If your reason is a marked functional problem, the public route may be open, and you can ask your family doctor and a public specialist about it.

How does an online consultation fit in? It does not replace an examination by a public specialist if you want the SSN route, and no one at City Medical Centre will pretend otherwise. What it can do is give you a second professional opinion on your photographs and your description at no cost. You will learn whether the doctor sees a deviated septum, a hump, a wide bridge or a tip problem, and whether the correction plan would be rhinoplasty, rhinoseptoplasty or something else. You can then decide with more information. The doctor will also say plainly if the operation is not needed, so you do not spend money unnecessarily.

On waiting times, English-language sources describe them as usually up to a few months in the big public facilities, and up to a few weeks in private facilities contracted with the SSN. No official waiting-list figure was found, so treat this only as a general picture. Co-payments, called tickets, exist for specialist visits without diagnostics. They are waived for low-income patients, and exemptions apply by age, income or chronic illness. If you go the public route, ask about your own exemption status before you plan.

Private insurance questions are best raised with your insurer before you pay anything. Ask directly whether a nose operation for aesthetic reasons, for breathing, or for both is reimbursed, and under what conditions, and get the answer in writing. Do not rely on a verbal assurance. Your coordinator can supply the medical description of the planned operation in plain terms, and the contract for medical services states the terms agreed.

Splint, swelling and the weeks around the follow-up checks

An honest recovery plan separates what is known from what the doctor must decide. The known parts are these: general anaesthesia, an operation of 1.5 to 3 hours, one day at the clinic, a recovery programme on discharge, check-ups at 7 days, 3 months and 6 months, and free doctor consultations for a year afterwards. The part that is not fixed is how swollen you will look and when it will fade. That depends on your skin, your anatomy and the extent of correction. The service text itself says recovery times are typical averages for guidance and that the real course is confirmed by the doctor.

Winter and summer affect the practical side differently. In Florence the January mean high is 11.2 °C, and indoor heating dries the air in flats while the damp outside raises the humidity to 71.5%. Moving between those two conditions can make a nose that is recovering feel stuffy and uncomfortable, so ask the doctor in advance what you may use for comfort and what you must avoid. In July the mean high is 32.3 °C and the city is crowded in the middle of the day, so ask about avoiding heat, direct sun and tight crowds during the first weeks. None of this changes the medical plan, but it changes how you arrange your days.

Think about the practical side as a short list. Arrange who will collect you from the clinic and stay with you the first evening. Prepare soft food and drinks. Set up a place to rest with your head comfortably raised if the doctor recommends it. Keep the coordinator's WhatsApp or Telegram open so you can send a photo if something looks unusual. Three coordinators work in stages: one before the first consultation, one from booking to discharge, and one through recovery up to the final check-up. Having a named person for each stage means you are not repeating your story every time.

Remember also that the operation is not for everyone. The contraindications listed are infectious diseases, mental health disorders, cancer, age under 18, decompensated chronic diseases, blood clotting problems, skin damage in the area of the planned surgery, and inflammation of the ears, throat, nose or eyes. The optimal age for primary rhinoplasty is 18 to 45. If medically indicated it can be done later, provided general health allows. Revision rhinoplasty is performed no earlier than a year after the primary operation. If you had a previous nose operation, send the dates and any records you have.

Preparing the paperwork and the conversation from home

Because the first consultation is online, much of the preparation happens on your phone. Here is a practical order. First, send the photographs described earlier and a few lines about what bothers you. Second, describe your breathing honestly. Third, list your medicines, allergies and previous operations. Fourth, tell the coordinator which date range you have in mind and why, for example Easter, the June festival week, an exam period or a work deadline. Fifth, ask your questions about the plan and the 3D model, which is made at the consultation, so you can compare the intended shape with what you imagined.

After that the doctor suggests a technique and names the final price, which is then fixed in the contract. The date is reserved once a deposit is paid and the terms are confirmed in the contract for medical services. Only after you confirm the plan and the date is anything booked. This sequence means you are never asked to commit before you have seen the plan.

Finally, think about what you want to hear from the doctor. Ask what could limit the result in your case. Ask whether your septum needs correction. Ask what the doctor needs from you in the weeks before the operation. Ask how the 3D model differs from what a real nose can achieve. These questions are normal, and the free consultation exists to answer them.

Does Florence's damp winter affect when I should plan a nose operation?

The climate figures show a cold, humid winter, with a January mean low of 2.1 °C, about 28.5 nights a year below freezing and relative humidity of 71.5% in January. The service text gives no season-based rule, so the choice is a practical one. Winter colds and sinus inflammation are listed among the reasons the doctor may not proceed, so plan a date with a margin and tell the coordinator immediately if you fall ill before it.

Can I plan the operation so that my nose has settled before Easter in Florence?

You can plan backwards from the date, but you cannot promise the exact look of the nose on a given day. Easter 2027 falls on 28 March, the day of the Scoppio del Carro in Piazza del Duomo. Recovery times are typical averages, and your own anatomy determines how it goes. Choose the operation date well ahead of the event, count the 21 days of preparation and the one day at the clinic, and ask the doctor at the consultation how much margin is sensible for you.

Will the national health service pay if my main problem is breathing?

It may in defined functional cases. A January 2024 consumer article says the SSN covers rhinoplasty for severe septal deviation or breathing problems, while purely aesthetic surgery is available only privately. Whether your case qualifies is decided by a public specialist, so ask your family doctor about that route. The online consultation can give you a second opinion on your photographs, but it does not replace the public assessment.

I wear glasses. What should I arrange before the operation?

Ask the doctor and the coordinator before the date is fixed how long frames should stay off the nose and what you can use meanwhile. The text gives no fixed period, so the answer comes from the doctor in your case. Contact lenses or a lighter option for everyday tasks may be worth sorting out in advance. Also choose a splint colour you are comfortable wearing outdoors, from the eight available.

How do public holidays in Italy affect the tests before surgery?

The preparation starts 21 days before the operation and includes a complete blood count, biochemistry, a coagulation panel, a chest X-ray and an X-ray of the sinuses. Italian public holidays, such as 1 November, 8 December, 25 and 26 December, 6 January and every Sunday, can slow down local laboratories and imaging centres. Coordinators answer round the clock on WhatsApp and Telegram, but a laboratory may not, so book your tests early around those dates.

I live in a hilly district of Florence. Does that matter for the first days after discharge?

It can matter in a practical way. The city is ringed by hills such as Fiesole, Settignano, Arcetri and Bellosguardo, and some streets are steep. After a day at the clinic under general anaesthesia you will need someone with you for the way home and the first evening. Plan the route and the help in advance, and tell your coordinator about any difficulty with stairs or steep roads so it is part of the plan.

Should I tell the doctor about seasonal allergies when I send my photos?

Yes. Describe which months are worst, which medicines you use, and how your breathing changes between heated rooms and the cold street. This helps the doctor judge whether the septum needs attention as well as the outer shape, in which case rhinoseptoplasty may be proposed. The doctor will also tell you honestly if the operation will not help with your complaint.

What if a previous nose operation was done in Italy and I am unhappy with it?

Revision rhinoplasty is performed no earlier than a year after the primary operation. Send photographs, the date of the earlier operation and any records you have through WhatsApp or Telegram. The doctor will assess whether a repeat correction is reasonable and explain the plan, and the first consultation is free and carries no obligation.
