Rhinoplasty in Catania: what you need to know

Rhinoplasty, or nose job, reshapes the nose to fit the individual proportions of the face. It corrects congenital and acquired deformities, including changes after a nasal injury. Patients from Catania most often ask about removing a dorsal hump, narrowing an overly wide nose, refining the tip or correcting the nostrils. Every surgery plan is created individually, taking into account all features of the nose.

What happens after surgery? For the first day you stay under observation in the inpatient unit. Swelling gradually subsides, though the tip and bridge may remain swollen for some time. Bending over, touching the nose and wearing glasses or makeup around it are off-limits early on. The final result for patients from Catania can be judged after 1–1.5 years, once tissues fully stabilise.

Rhinoplasty costs $4,200 (≈ €3,750). For patients from Catania, this price already includes the surgery and the surgeon's work, the inpatient stay after the operation, follow-up visits and dressings, and support from a personal coordinator. It covers every type of surgery — open and closed rhinoplasty, tip correction and septorhinoplasty. The first consultation is free; the exact cost is confirmed after an in-person exam.

What patients write after this operation. Reviews are translated from the original language.

Ekaterina Ivanova

For a long time I was self-conscious about the length of my nose, until a friend who had had rhinoplasty recommended this clinic. At the very first consultation they set the date of surgery and explained every stage in detail. The rhinoplasty under general anaesthesia was performed by Mareta Meirieva: the swelling went down quickly, and after just a week my nose looked natural and neat. Modern equipment, attentive staff and appointments without delays made the whole process comfortable. I recommend the clinic to anyone who values professionalism and a quality result.

Rhinoplasty

Olga Vasilyeva

This was my first visit to the clinic, for rhinoseptoplasty, and to be honest I was very nervous. At the consultation they explained every stage of the operation and recovery in detail, which calmed me down straight away. The operation was performed by Mareta Meirieva: the swelling started to go down on the third day, and the result is visible to the naked eye. Everything inside is sterile and pleasant, the atmosphere inspires trust, and the staff are always responsive. I thank the clinic for the high level of service and the warm approach!

Rhinoplasty

Marina Samarina

Everything was first-class: clean, cosy and calm. Booking and choosing the right date was easy. The nose operation went smoothly and the nerve block was done perfectly: now I breathe freely without nasal drops! It is a real lifesaver for anyone tired of endless prescriptions and ineffective procedures. I recommend it to everyone who values professionalism and results.

Rhinoplasty

Viktoria Petrova

I recently had rhinoplasty and I am absolutely delighted. At the consultation they told me about every stage in detail, so I went into surgery fully prepared. The operation went smoothly: they straightened the bridge of my nose and made the nostrils symmetrical, and the shape came out very neat. The swelling lasted a little longer than I expected, but they explained straight away that full recovery takes more time. No unpleasant surprises, everything was within the normal range. I recommend the clinic to anyone looking for a confident result and an attentive attitude.

Dry July air, damp December: what a nose in Catania meets through the year

Catania sits on the Ionian coast at the base of Mount Etna, and its climate decides how a nose is treated through the seasons. At the Catania-Sigonella station the 1991-2020 July mean high is 35.1 °C, and August is 35.5 °C. Rain is almost absent in high summer: July averages 7.8 mm, and the average number of rainy days in July is 0.4. For someone planning a nose operation, that means hot, dry, bright weeks in which air conditioning does much of the work indoors. People with sensitive nasal lining often notice dryness when they move between a cooled room and the street, so it is worth raising at the consultation.

Winter is a different picture. December is the wettest month at 78.5 mm, followed by November at 66.2 mm. Annual relative humidity averages 70.3%, and the year brings 483.8 mm of precipitation on 50.7 days of at least 1 mm. January highs average 17.5 °C and lows 6.3 °C. This is mild by the standards of much of Europe, but damp, and a damp season is when many people feel a nose that is already narrow or deviated. The doctor will ask during the consultation when your breathing is at its worst: in the dry heat, in the wet months, or evenly all year. That tells the doctor whether the issue is mostly structural or seasonal, and it helps to explain why a combined operation is sometimes suggested.

Cold snaps are rare, but the records are wide. The city has seen 46.7 °C in July and -2.6 °C at the other end. The last snowfall recorded was on 17 December 1988, and light snow fell on 9 February 2015. A couple of days above 40 °C are passed in most years. For planning, the consequence is simple: there is no month when nothing weather-related has to be considered. Your coordinator can help you match the operation date to the part of the year that suits you, using the details you describe in WhatsApp or Telegram.

Everything about the operation itself is fixed by the service. Rhinoplasty is performed under general anaesthesia, takes 1.5 to 3 hours depending on complexity, and is followed by one day in the clinic's inpatient unit. The doctor determines the extent of the work at the consultation, from your goals and the anatomy of your nose. Local weather affects only the planning around those hours, not the operation.

Breathing first: when the septum becomes part of the plan

Many people who write from Catania say that their first reason is not the shape but the airflow. That is a legitimate starting point. Primary rhinoplasty is described as an operation that adjusts appearance and improves breathing when airflow is restricted. When the septum is deviated, rhinoseptoplasty combines the septum correction with a change to the shape of the nose, so both tasks are handled in one operation. Septoplasty alone corrects the septum and keeps the external contour intact, which is the right choice when the outer shape does not trouble you.

Italy's national health service, the SSN, was established in 1978 and provides universal coverage to citizens and residents. It is run region by region under the Ministry of Health, which sets the national Essential Levels of Care. Purely aesthetic surgery is not paid by the SSN and is available only privately. An Italian financial-information article from January 2024 adds that the SSN covers defined functional cases, including rhinoplasty for severe septal deviation or breathing problems. If your difficulty is mainly functional, it may therefore be worth asking your public specialist whether your case falls within those functional criteria. Whether it does is a medical and administrative decision made by them, not by us.

Waiting times matter here as well. English-language sources describe them as usually up to a few months in the big public facilities, and up to a few weeks in private facilities contracted with the SSN, although no official waiting-list figure was found. Co-pays for specialist visits exist, with exemptions by age, income or chronic illness. Someone who has waited a long time for a public appointment might still ask for a free assessment of photographs, simply to understand what shape of operation might be recommended.

The service includes a list of conditions that rhinoplasty tackles: nasal polyps, a bulbous tip, asymmetric cartilage or nostrils, a deviated septum, marked breathing problems, a wide bridge, a pronounced hump, a saddle nose and a nose injury. There are also contraindications, among them infectious diseases, blood-clotting problems, decompensated chronic diseases, inflammation of the ears, throat, nose or eyes, and an age under 18. If you are not sure which group you fall into, send photographs on Telegram. The doctor will say whether rhinoplasty suits you, at no cost and with no commitment.

Sunshine, sunglasses and a splint in a bright city

Catania receives 3,225.9 hours of sunshine a year. June alone brings 381.6 hours, and even December has 182.3. A person recovering from nasal surgery in a place this bright will think about glasses and sunlight, for the simple reason that frames sit on the bridge of the nose. How and when you may wear sunglasses or spectacles after the operation is an instruction the doctor gives you in your own recovery programme, because it depends on the technique used and on how your tissues react. We do not give a general number of weeks here. Ask the question at the consultation and write down the answer.

The nasal splint is the other visible element. The clinic lets you choose its colour from a list: purple, gold, green, light blue, pink, yellow, raspberry or carbon. It may seem a small thing, but a splint in a light colour looks different in strong daylight than a dark one, and a patient who knows she will be outdoors often will pick differently from one who will stay in. The doctor describes the care of the splint in the recovery programme.

Sun and dry heat also affect planning in a less obvious way. Between late spring and early autumn, the average daytime high is above what most people find comfortable for outdoor work, and a person who spends hours outside, for example near the sea or on the slopes of Etna, will want to think about how much of that is realistic in the early days of recovery. Your coordinator, not a leaflet, answers those personal questions, and you can write to her in the evening or at night, since the coordinators answer 24/7.

Recovery also involves scheduled checks: at 7 days, at 3 months and at 6 months, and consultations with the doctor remain free for a year afterwards. Since the follow-up is built around the same doctor who operates, the checks can be arranged around your own calendar, including months that are very bright and hot.

Choosing a date around Sant'Agata, the opera season and the August holiday

The face is on show more at some moments than at others, and Catania has a well-defined calendar. The Festival of Saint Agatha takes place every 5 February, with festivities beginning on 3 February. That date is local and is not on the list of Italian national holidays, so offices work as usual unless a particular employer decides otherwise. If you expect to be photographed or to attend the celebrations, ask yourself how you would want your face to look on those days, and count backwards. The operation is a one-day stay, but swelling and the splint are part of the first period afterwards.

The Teatro Massimo Bellini runs its opera season from December to May, and the Catania Jazz Festival fills several winter months. For people who enjoy evenings out, that leaves a long stretch with dressy events. The national holidays also shape the calendar: 1 January, 6 January, Easter Monday, 25 April, 1 May, 2 June, 15 August, 4 October, 1 November, 8 December, 25 December and 26 December, and every Sunday. Long weekends around these dates can give you extra days at home without taking leave, which is useful for the first days after discharge.

Students make a distinct group. The University of Catania, founded in 1434, had 40,287 students in 2024/2025. The service says the optimal age for rhinoplasty is 18 to 45, and that surgery is best done when the nose has finished forming and tissues still heal well. For a student, the natural gaps are between exam sessions or in the long summer break. In the hottest weeks, though, remember the climate described above, and talk with the coordinator about the balance between a free calendar and comfortable weather.

Sport and city events can also take over a weekend. The Stadio Angelo Massimino, opened in 1937, holds 21,000 people, and the Catania-Etna car hill-climb dates back to 1923. We do not suggest that anyone should plan around a match. Still, anyone who has regular fixtures, training or a busy workday should state them in the first message, so the proposed dates take them into account before anything is booked.

Starting from photographs: how the first conversation works

The first stage requires nothing but a phone. You send photographs of your nose on WhatsApp or Telegram, the doctor assesses them for free, and you receive a price. Nothing is booked until you confirm the plan and dates. At the consultation the doctor makes a 3D model of the future result, so you see a realistic forecast before deciding. The consultation is free, takes place before surgery and carries no commitment. Reply time is stated as within 15 minutes.

Catania is the second-largest city in Sicily after Palermo, with 296,984 inhabitants by the 2026 estimate (301,104 at the ISTAT 2021 count), and a metropolitan area of 1,067,550 people across 58 municipalities. That means many readers live outside the city proper, perhaps on the slopes of Etna, where the Circumetnea narrow-gauge railway runs 110 km around the mountain to a maximum elevation of 976 m. The online format means you do not need to organise anything for the first stage. Within the city, the metro runs 8.8 km and has done so since 1999, which is useful to know when you arrange the tests.

Preparation begins 21 days before the operation. After the consultation you receive a list of required tests: a complete blood count, biochemistry, a coagulation panel, a chest X-ray and an X-ray of the sinuses. The list also includes urinalysis and infection tests, with validity periods stated by the doctor. You can usually do these in Catania, and the coordinator explains each step and reminds you about them.

The date is reserved once a deposit is paid, by card at the clinic or online by bank transfer, and the terms are confirmed in a contract for medical services. The price is named by the doctor after the consultation and fixed in the contract. Three coordinators accompany the process: one before the first consultation, one during the stay, and one through recovery to the final check-up. They answer by message at any hour.

Revision, rhinoseptoplasty and what to ask before deciding

Not everyone who writes has a first nose operation in mind. Revision rhinoplasty is a repeat correction after an unsuccessful or partly successful operation, and it is carried out no earlier than a year after the primary one. If you are already past that point and want a second opinion, send photographs of your nose and describe what you had done, when, and what bothers you now. The doctor can then say whether a revision is realistic.

The service also lists reconstructive rhinoseptoplasty, and one version with a rib cartilage graft. These are chosen when the structure needs rebuilding, for example after a nose injury. Everyone is assessed individually, and the doctor tells you honestly if surgery is not needed in your case, which can save you an unnecessary expense.

National data on health habits add some context. ISTAT 2023 reports that 46.3% of adults are overweight or obese, and 35% of people aged 3 and over are sedentary, though no regional split was found. These are general figures and say nothing about any single patient. They are mentioned only because general health is part of what the doctor considers, and decompensated chronic disease is on the list of contraindications. Italy spends 9.7% of GDP on health, and life expectancy reached 83.4 years in 2018 according to OECD figures, fourth highest among its members. People in Catania are used to a well-developed health system, and it is reasonable to expect a clear explanation of every step; ask for it.

Some of the northern regions attract patients from the south for care, and English-language sources note this pattern of patient mobility. Online consultation changes the starting point: the first discussion happens without leaving Catania at all. Ask for the plan in writing, ask what the 3D model shows and what it cannot show, and ask what the follow-up covers. Your answers decide whether the next step is a date or simply more time to think.

Will the SSN pay for my nose operation if I live in Catania?

Purely aesthetic surgery is not paid by the SSN. According to an Italian financial article from January 2024, the SSN covers defined functional cases, including rhinoplasty for severe septal deviation or breathing problems. Whether your case qualifies is decided by the public specialist, not by us. If you wish to go privately, a free assessment of your photographs on WhatsApp or Telegram shows what operation the doctor would suggest.

Is the hot Catania summer a bad time for the operation?

July highs average 35.1 °C and August 35.5 °C, and 40 °C is passed a couple of times in most years. We give no rule that summer is unsuitable. The question is how comfortable you will be during recovery. Tell the coordinator about your work and plans, and the doctor will advise on the timing and on the recovery programme.

Does the damp winter affect breathing after rhinoplasty?

December is the wettest month at 78.5 mm, and annual relative humidity is 70.3%. Many people notice their nose more in damp weather. If your difficulty is a deviated septum, rhinoseptoplasty corrects the septum and the shape of the nose in one operation. How the weather will affect your own recovery is something the doctor explains in the recovery programme.

I want to look my best for Sant'Agata on 5 February. How should I plan?

Festivities begin on 3 February, and 5 February is a local date, not a national holiday. Choose the operation date by counting back from it and discuss the swelling and the splint with the doctor. The stay is one day at the clinic, and checks follow at 7 days, 3 months and 6 months. Write to the coordinator early so the dates can be set before anything is booked.

Can I wear sunglasses in the bright Catania weather after the operation?

With 3,225.9 hours of sunshine a year, it is a fair question. The instruction depends on the technique used and on how you heal, so the doctor gives it in your recovery programme. Ask at the consultation, and write the answer down so you can find it later.

Which tests can I do in Catania before the operation?

Preparation begins 21 days before surgery. The list includes a complete blood count, biochemistry, a coagulation panel, a chest X-ray, an X-ray of the sinuses, urinalysis and infection tests. You receive the full list after the first consultation, and the coordinator reminds you about each test and the deadline for it.

I am a student at the University of Catania. When is a good time?

The optimal age for rhinoplasty is 18 to 45, and under 18 it is a contraindication. For timing, many students prefer a gap between exam sessions or the summer break. The stay is one day, and the follow-up checks come at 7 days, 3 months and 6 months. Tell the coordinator about your calendar, and she will suggest dates.

I live on the slopes of Etna. Do I need to come to Catania for the first step?

No. The first consultation is online, on WhatsApp or Telegram. You send photographs, the doctor assesses them for free, and you get a price. The 3D model of the future result is discussed at the consultation, and nothing is booked until you confirm the plan and the dates.
