I am sharing my experience, because before the operation I went through a pile of reviews myself and was looking for real stories. I had a beard transplant six months ago. Honestly, in the first days after the procedure I felt a little jittery: my face looked unfamiliar, there was slight swelling and small scabs. In the first couple of months the hair partly fell out, as the doctor had warned. But now the result truly makes me very happy) From about the 4th month active, even growth began. The transplanted hair took very well, the beard now looks as natural as possible, no bald patches are left. The beard became much thicker and denser, with the shape I had thought about for a long time. All in all, I recommend the clinic, the doctor was polite and explained everything 👍 The result is definitely worth it!

Your main worries

We tell what people
ask before booking

People often say hair implants, but no artificial hair is used. In a hair transplant the doctor moves your own follicles (grafts) from the donor area to thinning or bald areas using FUE or DHI.

City Medical Centre doctors

Yes. City Medical Centre has patients scattered across several countries, and you are offered a consultation online beforehand.

The base prices are $2,200 (≈ €2,000) (FUE), $2,500 (≈ €2,250) (DHI) and $2,700 (≈ €2,450) (combined). The precise cost is determined at a free consultation and graft count, then fixed in your contract.

It is a one-day procedure — you leave for home right after.

It helps with stable pattern hair loss and a receding hairline when there are enough donor grafts. Some types of alopecia need treatment first; the doctor checks this at the consultation.

Nothing hurts: local anaesthesia is given before the work starts.

FUE relies on tweezer harvesting with no incisions or stitches. DHI relies on Choi-pen implantation without channels. The combined DHI+FUE approach harvests by FUE and implants by DHI.

Only an assessment of the donor zone gives the answer, and the doctor performs that at no cost.

The recovery window is 0–10 days. Transplanted hairs falling out by 2–4 weeks is normal behaviour. Growth begins around 3–4 months, density is clear at 6–9 months, while 12–18 months is the final stage.

You get a lifetime hair growth guarantee, written into the contract.

Why this hair transplant fits a resident of Catania

One day, local anaesthesia, no cuts and no stitches - that is the whole of FUE and DHI as a patient in Catania experiences them, and the reason the methods fit people who cannot lose a week.

A patient in Catania can start on any evening, because the online consultation is free and needs only pictures of the thinning area for the doctor to judge whether a transplant helps. Daily contact, 24/7.

Healing occupies 0-10 days and asks little of you. At 2-4 weeks the transplanted hairs come away, a normal part of the process that catches unprepared patients by surprise. Growth returns at 3-4 months.

Page medically reviewed by Anastasia A. Kolesnik, hair transplant doctor. Review date: .

Over 3,200 hours of sunshine: what that means for a scalp with thinning hair

Catania records about 3,225.9 hours of sunshine a year. June alone brings 381.6 hours, while December has 182.3. For anyone with thinning hair, that gap matters more than the annual total. A scalp with less hair cover receives more direct light, and a patient who is planning a hair transplant should expect to spend the growth months under a strong sun in the warm half of the year.

The heat adds to the picture. Over 1991-2020 the mean daily high was 35.1 °C in July and 35.5 °C in August, with nights at 21.4 °C and 22.3 °C. The temperature passes 40 °C a couple of times in most years, and the record is 46.7 °C, set in July. None of this makes a transplant impossible. It does mean the aftercare plan should be read with the Catania summer in mind and not as a generic leaflet.

The plan that comes with the procedure includes a care schedule for the transplanted and donor areas, advice on washing your hair, on sleep and on headwear, and a plan for returning to sport. Those instructions are the part to follow closely in the sunny months. The coordinator can answer questions about them at any hour on WhatsApp or Telegram, so a doubt about a cap or a shower on a hot afternoon does not have to wait.

Sun exposure is also worth raising at the free online consultation. The doctor looks at the donor area at the back of the head, counts the grafts and explains what result is realistic. Mention how much of your day is spent outdoors, because a scooter commuter, a market trader and an office worker will plan the first weeks differently.

Sea air, 70 % humidity and a winter that stays above freezing

Relative humidity in Catania averages 70.3 % across the year. The city lies on the Ionian coast at 7 m elevation, so the air is rarely dry, and the scalp tends to feel the sea and the dust more than the cold. Humidity and warmth also make a scalp feel sweaty under a cap. That is one more reason to ask the coordinator exactly which headwear suits the first days and which does not.

Winters are mild. January has a mean high of 17.5 °C and a mean low of 6.3 °C, and the lowest temperature on record is -2.6 °C. Snow is a rarity: the last snowfall recorded in the city was on 17 December 1988, with a light fall on 9 February 2015. For a patient this means cold is seldom the problem during recovery. A light hat is usually enough for a winter morning, and the heavy winter headwear that patients in colder cities need rarely comes into it.

Rain follows a clear pattern. The year brings 483.8 mm over 50.7 days with at least 1 mm of rain. December is the wettest month at 78.5 mm, then November at 66.2 mm. July is the driest at 7.8 mm, with only 0.4 rainy days, and August has 9.8 mm. A rainy day in November or December is a practical matter for the healing period, because a wet cap or a sudden shower can interfere with the washing routine the clinic describes. Keep a spare clean cap and ask the coordinator how to manage rain.

Etna adds a little to all this. The city sits at the base of the volcano on the east coast of Sicily. The 110 km Circumetnea narrow-gauge railway circles the mountain and reaches 976 m at its highest point. An excursion up the slopes is a pleasant plan, but in the early weeks after surgery it is a plan to discuss with the coordinator before you set a date.

Fitting the growth months to the Catania calendar

A hair transplant is slow by nature, and the stages are the part to plan around. According to the schedule the clinic uses, days 0-10 are the healing period: crusts fall away and swelling goes down. At 2-4 weeks the transplanted hairs shed, which is a normal stage; only the hairs fall out and the follicles stay in place. First growth appears at 3-4 months, density shows at 6-9 months, and the final result arrives at 12-18 months.

Here is an example with a date after 1 November 2026. Suppose the operation is on 9 November. The healing days run to about 19 November, and the shedding stage falls in late November and December, in the middle of the wettest weeks of the Catania year. The first new hairs would be expected between February and March 2027. Density would build from May through August 2027, and the final result would settle between November 2027 and May 2028.

Local events can anchor the calendar. The Festival of Saint Agatha is on 5 February, and the festivities begin on 3 February. In this example that is roughly the three-month mark, when first growth may be only just starting. A patient who does not want to be photographed with a shorn donor area and early stubble can choose a date so that the busiest festival days fall after the first stage is behind them. The Teatro Massimo Bellini opera season runs from December to May, and the Catania Jazz Festival fills several winter months, so a patient with a social calendar can plan around the early weeks.

National holidays matter too. Italy marks 1 January, 6 January, Easter Monday, 25 April, 1 May, 2 June, 15 August, 4 October, 1 November, 8 December, 25 December and 26 December, and every Sunday is a holiday. The follow-up visits at 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months are online, so a holiday does not close the coordinator's channel, since the team replies round the clock. Still, it helps to know which dates fall on a day when you will be busy with family and not free for photos.

Caps, hats and the first weeks: a practical headwear plan

Catania patients ask about headwear more than about almost anything else, and the reason is the sun. The clinic's package includes advice on headwear, so the specific type and timing come from the doctor and coordinator, not from guesswork. What this article can add is the Catania context: where the sun is strong, where the air is humid and where a hat may be unavoidable at work or on the road.

It helps to think in three phases. During the first 10 days the area is healing and the crusts are coming away, so you follow the washing and covering instructions precisely. From about 2-4 weeks the hairs shed, and many patients feel self-conscious. In summer a light, clean, breathable cap is a way to feel comfortable in public, and the coordinator can confirm what is suitable at that moment. From 3-4 months, as the first growth arrives, the concern shifts from healing to protection from the strong light that this city offers.

A few preparations are worth making before the date. Choose headwear that is clean and loose and that you can wash. Plan how you will get through the weeks without the helmet, the hard hat or the sports cap you wear every day. If you ride a scooter, ask about helmets before you book the date. If your work is outdoors, say so at the consultation so the doctor can account for it.

The same goes for sport. The Stadio Angelo Massimino, which opened in 1937 and holds 21,000 people, is a reminder that match days mean sun, crowds and noise. A plan for returning to sport and hair care comes with the package, and it is better to follow it than to guess when a match or a run is safe. Send the coordinator your sporting plans and they can be written into the schedule.

Public healthcare, a private procedure: where a hair transplant sits in Italy

Italy's national health service, the SSN, was established in 1978 and provides universal coverage to citizens and residents. It is run on a regional basis and sets national Essential Levels of Care. A resident of Catania therefore has access to public care, but it is worth knowing where a hair transplant falls.

Purely aesthetic surgery is not paid by the SSN. A money.it article of January 2024 says such procedures are accessible only through private services. The SSN does cover reconstructive work after trauma, burns or mastectomy, and defined functional cases. A hair transplant for androgenetic alopecia is normally an elective decision. The service's own list of indications includes the effects left by an injury or burn, so the doctor at the consultation can say which category your case belongs to.

Waiting times in public care are described as usually up to a few months in the big facilities, and up to a few weeks in private facilities contracted with the SSN. That comparison is a reminder that online contact is quick in this setting: the first consultation is free, a reply comes within 15 minutes, and the doctor assesses photos before anything is booked. The price is set after the grafts are counted and fixed in the contract, so nothing is owed before the operation.

One more fact that explains the interest in remote consultation: the same source notes evidence of patients moving from the poorer southern regions to the more prosperous north for care. Sicily is in the south, and a consultation by messenger lets a patient from Catania get a specialist's view without arranging time away from home or work. The operation itself is one day at the clinic under local anaesthesia, and the doctor who will operate speaks with you at the consultation.

Does the Catania summer make a hair transplant a bad idea?

Not necessarily. The doctor decides on suitability, and the main point is aftercare. July and August bring mean highs of 35.1 °C and 35.5 °C, and 40 °C is passed a couple of times in most years. The care plan, with its advice on washing and headwear, is the part to follow closely. Many patients choose a date in the cooler months, but that is a personal choice to discuss at the consultation.

Which months of the year are driest for the healing period?

July is the driest month in Catania at 7.8 mm of rain, with 0.4 rainy days, and August has 9.8 mm. November (66.2 mm) and December (78.5 mm) are the wettest. The healing stage lasts 0-10 days, so a patient who wants to avoid rain during it may prefer a date away from those months. The coordinator can help you weigh that against the heat.

If I have the operation in November 2026, when would I see results?

As an example, an operation on 9 November 2026 would be followed by shedding in late November and December, first growth around February or March 2027, density from about May to August 2027 and the final result between November 2027 and May 2028. These ranges follow the stages of 2-4 weeks, 3-4 months, 6-9 months and 12-18 months. Individual progress varies, and the follow-up visits at 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months track it by photo.

Will the Festival of Saint Agatha in February affect my plan?

It can, in a practical way. The festivities begin on 3 February and the main day is 5 February. For an operation in early November, that is roughly the 3-month mark, when first growth may be only just appearing. If you want to attend the festival without concern about the shed stage, discuss the date with the coordinator, who can suggest what to expect at that point.

Will the SSN cover a hair transplant in Catania?

Purely aesthetic surgery is not paid by the SSN, according to a January 2024 article. The service does cover reconstructive work and defined functional cases. Hair loss after an injury or burn is one of the situations the clinic lists as suitable for a transplant, but whether public coverage applies to a particular case is not something this clinic decides. For the transplant itself, the free consultation sets out the plan and the price, which is then fixed in the contract.

I live on the slopes of Etna and spend much time outdoors. What should I tell the coordinator?

Mention how many hours a day you spend outside, whether you wear a helmet or hard hat, and what sport you do. The package includes advice on headwear, on washing and on returning to sport, and the doctor can tailor it to your routine. Sun is strong in this area, with 3,225.9 hours a year, so a clear picture of your day helps.

Can the follow-up visits be done around Italian holidays and Sundays?

The visits at 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months are conducted online, and the coordinator answers round the clock on WhatsApp and Telegram. Italy marks national holidays such as 1 November, 8 December and 25 December, and every Sunday is a holiday. None of this closes the messenger channel, but you may want to choose a calm day for the photos so the light is good and you are not rushed.

Is it possible to combine a hair transplant with university or work in Catania?

The operation takes one day at the clinic under local anaesthesia, and the first 10 days are the healing period, with crusts coming away and swelling going down. Students at the University of Catania, which had 40,287 enrolled in 2024/2025, and people in work can plan the date around exams or busy periods. Tell the coordinator your calendar and they can help match it to the healing and shedding stages.
