Half of those asking hear a no

Some cases need no operation at all, and the doctor will state that during the consultation, saving you the expense. Read below about the situations where a transplant genuinely helps.

The patterns it repairs

  • Androgenetic or diffuse alopecia
  • A receding hairline
  • A high hairline
  • Insufficient hair density
  • Genetic traits of hair growth
  • Consequences of an injury or a burn
  • Shedding after an illness
  • Shedding tied to hormonal imbalance

Stuck between the two answers?

Leave a number and the coordinator will ask for photos of the thinning area in a messenger; a doctor examines them and tells you honestly whether a transplant would help. Free, nothing booked.

I am sharing my experience, because before the operation I went through a pile of reviews myself and was looking for real stories. I had a beard transplant six months ago. Honestly, in the first days after the procedure I felt a little jittery: my face looked unfamiliar, there was slight swelling and small scabs. In the first couple of months the hair partly fell out, as the doctor had warned. But now the result truly makes me very happy) From about the 4th month active, even growth began. The transplanted hair took very well, the beard now looks as natural as possible, no bald patches are left. The beard became much thicker and denser, with the shape I had thought about for a long time. All in all, I recommend the clinic, the doctor was polite and explained everything 👍 The result is definitely worth it!

Standard questions

We share what people
ask before booking

People often say hair implants, but no artificial hair is used. In a hair transplant the doctor moves your own follicles (grafts) from the donor area to thinning or bald areas using FUE or DHI.

City Medical Centre doctors

Certainly. The clinic takes on patients from different cities and different countries, and a doctor can advise you online beforehand.

Pricing starts from $2,200 (≈ €2,000) for FUE, $2,500 (≈ €2,250) for DHI, and $2,700 (≈ €2,450) for combined DHI+FUE. The exact figure is confirmed for free after a graft count and written into the contract.

The full operation runs one day, and home comes straight after.

It helps with stable pattern hair loss and a receding hairline when there are enough donor grafts. Some types of alopecia need treatment first; the doctor checks this at the consultation.

No pain whatsoever; the scalp is anesthetized locally first.

FUE is the classic method: grafts are harvested with tweezers, with no cuts or stitches. DHI implants grafts without channels, using a Choi pen. A combined method harvests grafts by FUE and implants them with the DHI pen.

Expect the doctor to count grafts at the free consultation, taking the donor area as the starting point.

Healing takes up to 0–10 days, after which a 2–4 week shed follows, and that is normal. Growth begins in earnest at 3–4 months, density arrives near 6–9 months; the whole result comes at 12–18 months.

The clinic provides a lifetime guarantee on hair growth, stated in the contract.

A calm look at hair transplants for Bologna

FUE and DHI are built around convenience, which is what a patient in Bologna usually needs: no cuts, no stitches, local anaesthesia on its own, and an operation that finishes the day it starts.

A patient in Bologna can get a doctor's opinion at home: the online consultation is free, the photos of the thinning area are enough, and the grafts are counted from them. The clinic keeps in touch 24/7, in your own hours.

Healing needs 0-10 days of your patience and nothing else. Then at 2-4 weeks the transplanted hairs shed, a normal turn of events. Growth starts at 3-4 months and continues long after that first sign of it.

Hair Transplant in Bologna: price and what is included

Reading the weather before you plan a hair transplant

The grafts are only part of the story in a hair transplant. The skin of the scalp has to heal in the weeks that follow, and in Bologna that healing happens under a specific sky. The city sits on the edge of the Po Plain at the foot of the Apennines, 54 m above sea level at the centre. Its climate is classed as humid subtropical (Cfa), so the year swings between hot, bright summers and damp, cold winters. The weather differs from one month to the next, and that is why the calendar matters when you choose a date.

The 1991–2020 normals show a July mean high of 31.4 °C with a low of 19.1 °C, and August is almost the same at 31.3 °C and 19.0 °C. January looks very different, with a mean high of 7.2 °C and a mean low of -0.5 °C. The records are wider still: 40 °C in July and August, and -17 °C in February and December. Fresh grafts and a recovering donor area do not like either end of that range. Direct heat and strong light irritate healing skin, and a freezing wind on an exposed scalp is uncomfortable.

The service text describes the first stage as 0–10 days of healing. During that time the crusts fall away, the swelling subsides and the area slowly recovers. In the plan your coordinator prepares, those ten days are the ones to protect from extreme weather. A mild period of the year makes it easier to follow the instructions on washing your hair, sleeping and headwear that come with the programme.

The long-term sunshine figures point the same way. The 1961–1990 normals give about 2,040 hours of sun a year, with 291.4 hours in July against only 74.4 in December. In July the sun is both strong and long, and the scalp, especially in a thinning area, gets plenty of it. December is dim, and that is a gentler setting for the first fortnight. This does not mean winter is always right for you, but it is a factor worth discussing with the doctor.

Photos are the starting point for all of this. You send pictures on WhatsApp or Telegram, and the doctor assesses your donor area and counts the grafts. Mention your work in the message as well, whether you spend long days outdoors or in an office. The coordinator will then fit the date around your routine and the season, and nothing is booked until you confirm the plan.

Hats, wind and damp: headwear through the Bologna seasons

Headwear is one of the topics the programme covers, and the city's weather makes it a practical question. Winter here is wet rather than snowy. Snow falls on about 6.35 days a year in the 1961–1990 normals, 2.4 of them in January. Relative humidity is high, with 79.2% in January and 81% in November, against 59.1% in July. A cold, damp morning and a hat do not mix easily with a scalp that is healing, so the choice of what you wear matters.

The service text gives no list of approved hats and no number of days to avoid them. Do not guess that from general advice. The doctor gives you the exact headwear instructions for your case at the consultation, and the coordinator repeats them in the messenger on request. The care plan for the transplant and donor areas covers washing, sleep and headwear. What the city adds is the setting for those instructions, and the questions below follow from it:

- How loose does a cap need to be so that it does not rub the recipient area?

- How should a wet scarf or hood be handled on a rainy day in November, when precipitation is at its highest?

- What do you do on a bright summer day when you must be outdoors?

Annual precipitation is 667.6 mm, spread over 73 days with at least 1 mm of rain. The wettest months are November (77.2 mm) and October (75.4 mm), and the driest are January (34 mm) and July (32.1 mm). Rainy days in autumn mean umbrellas, hoods and damp air. If you have a transplant in that season, ask the doctor how to keep the scalp dry and clean, and what to do when it does get wet.

Commuting adds a further point. The city's article gives an average commute of 5.4 km and 53 minutes per weekday trip, and trolleybuses run on the city's public network. A long journey on a crowded vehicle brings heat, close contact and a lot of touching of the head. If you have to go home on the day of the procedure, plan how you will protect the area on the way. A coordinator can talk through a realistic plan for your home, your commute and your working day.

Planning the graft-growth months around the local calendar

Graft growth is a slow process, and the stages in the service text give a clear timetable. In the first 0–10 days the area heals. Between 2 and 4 weeks the transplanted hairs shed. Only the hairs fall out, and the follicles stay in place. First growth appears at 3–4 months. From 6 to 9 months the hair gets denser, and the main volume and contour become visible. The end result arrives at 12–18 months. The follow-up checks sit at 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months after surgery.

Here is an example of how that timetable might fall in Bologna. Suppose the operation is on a Monday in early March 2027. Shedding then runs from late March into early April, around Easter Monday, which is a public holiday, and the late-April and 1 May holidays follow soon after. First growth would appear in about June to early July, just as the city enters its hottest and brightest period. Density becomes visible in September to December, when the weather is milder and wetter. The end result then lands between March and September 2028.

Compare a procedure in mid-November 2026. Shedding falls in mid-December to mid-January, over the 8 December, 25–26 December, 1 January and 6 January holidays. First growth appears from mid-February to mid-March 2027. Density shows in mid-May to mid-August. The end result then comes between November 2027 and May 2028. The first fortnight is damp, which is easier for the skin than a heat wave, but holidays can affect your availability for follow-up photos.

Neither timetable is better. They are two examples of how a plan can shift when you look at it against the real calendar. Italy has a number of fixed national holidays: 1 January, 6 January, Easter Monday, 25 April, 1 May, 2 June, 15 August, 4 October, 1 November, 8 December, 25 December and 26 December. Every Sunday is a holiday as well. If you want the shedding weeks to coincide with a quiet part of your year, count these dates in. The online format also helps here, because the consultation, the follow-up photos and the questions all go through the messenger.

Your coordinator is reachable 24/7, so a question on a Sunday or a public holiday does not have to wait. The coordinator tracks your progress by photo between the follow-up checks, which means that the 3-month and 6-month stages can be reviewed even if your week is full.

Sun, summer and the scalp during the first year

The first year is when the scalp is most sensitive. A transplanted area and the donor area at the back of the head both need protection from strong light. This is the point where the city's long summer matters most. Bologna's sunshine peaks in July at 291.4 hours, and daytime highs of 31 °C are normal for July and August. The weather there can reach 40 °C, as in 2017, when the Italian article gives 40.1 °C on 4 August.

The service text does not give any figure for how many months you must avoid direct sun, so no number is given here. What the programme does include is advice on headwear and hair care, and a plan for returning to sport. The doctor will give you dates for your case. In the meantime, you can plan around these things:

- Outdoor work in July and August, and the hours when you are in the sun.

- The sports you play and when you want to return to them.

- Swimming and exposure on holiday weeks, particularly around 15 August.

The city's football culture and its stadium are well known, with a capacity of 32,000 to 38,000 depending on the source. A match day or an outdoor sports event means hours in the open, often bareheaded. If you attend regularly, tell the coordinator so that your plan covers that season too. The same goes for running, cycling and other training. The plan for returning to sport is part of what is included, and the doctor sets it for each patient.

Dryness and humidity matter for the skin as well. Humidity averages 69.7% across the year, from 59.1% in July to 79.2% in January. Skin and scalp react to these changes, with crusts in the first 10 days and then ordinary care. The coordinator can answer practical questions about washing and products in the messenger, with the doctor's instructions as the reference.

The final result is judged at 12–18 months, so you will see your hair through at least one full cycle of the seasons. That is a useful way of looking at it. Photos taken in each season show the real progression, and the follow-up visits at 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months give a regular check.

Who is suitable, and how health coverage in Italy fits in

A transplant does not suit everyone. According to the service text, it helps with androgenetic or diffuse alopecia, bald patches and a receding frontal edge of the hair, a high frontal edge, insufficient density, the effects of an injury or burn, and the genetic side of hair growth. Contraindications include trichotillomania, body dysmorphic disorder, cancer and being under 18. The text also lists intolerance to anaesthetics, epilepsy, serious heart conditions, diabetes mellitus, a pacemaker, AIDS/HIV, hepatitis B/C and pulmonary embolism. Patchy alopecia is listed among the cases where a transplant is not the answer. The doctor makes the decision after seeing your photos and talking to you, and may say that your case can be solved without surgery.

Italy's national health service, the SSN, was established in 1978. It provides universal coverage to citizens and residents and is run on a regional basis under the Ministry of Health, which sets the national Essential Levels of Care (LEA). In Emilia-Romagna, with Bologna as its capital, the regional service applies those rules. According to a money.it article of January 2024, purely aesthetic surgery is not paid by the SSN and is "accessibile soltanto attraverso prestazioni private". The SSN does cover reconstructive surgery after trauma, burns and mastectomy, and certain defined functional cases.

That matters for two groups of readers. If your hair loss comes from androgenetic alopecia, you should expect the procedure to be arranged privately. If it follows an injury or a burn, ask your regional health service what it covers, and have your medical records ready. The coordinator can describe what the doctor needs to see, such as photos and a description of the history. Whether the SSN would pay for a particular case is a question for the regional health authority, not for the coordinator.

Waiting times in the public system are described as usually up to a few months in the big public facilities, and up to a few weeks in private facilities contracted with the SSN. Those figures come from a general source and are not an official waiting list. An online consultation does not depend on any of that, since the first conversation is free and you get an answer without a referral.

Practical points for residents of the city

Bologna is a large university city. The University of Bologna, founded around 1088, reports 90,291 students in its infobox, and the city article says more than 80,000 were enrolled in 2015. The university has 11 schools and 33 departments, with campuses in Cesena, Forlì, Ravenna and Rimini. For students and young staff, the academic year shapes the calendar of a procedure. Exam sessions and lecture periods affect when you can be reached and when you can rest at home.

The city has 391,473 residents according to the 2026 infobox, and the Italian article gives 392,052 residents at 31 May 2026. The Metropolitan City has 1,024,290 people. The municipality covers 140.86 km² and the Metropolitan City 3,702.32 km². The 2025 figure for immigrants is 18.2% of the population. For a medical coordinator this means that people write in different languages and from different backgrounds, which is why the messenger format is useful.

On the day itself, the stay is one day at the clinic under local anaesthesia. The method is FUE, with no cuts and no stitches. Grafts come from the back of the head or the temples. The case examples in the service text show 2,500 to 4,000 grafts, and the doctor counts your own number at the consultation. After that the recovery is led by instructions, follow-ups and photo tracking. The patient reviews describe the same sequence: swelling and small scabs at first, partial shedding in the first months, and growth from about the fourth month.

Festivals and events also fill the calendar in Bologna, including the Bologna Jazz Festival, Biografilm, Il Cinema Ritrovato, Gender Bender, the Future Film Festival and the Human Rights Film Festival. The city article does not give their months, so check the dates when you plan. If you want to be in good shape for a particular event, tell the coordinator at the start. Growth takes months, and the 12–18 month end result will not fit a deadline of a few weeks.

Which season is easiest on the scalp for a hair transplant in Bologna?

The long-term weather normals show that July and August have mean highs above 31 °C and the most sunshine, with 291.4 hours in July. December is the dimmest month, with 74.4 hours. The first 0–10 days are the healing period, so many people prefer them in a milder, less bright month. Still, there is no single right answer. Autumn brings the most rain, with 77.2 mm in November, and winter brings cold mornings. The doctor and coordinator look at your work, sport and commute and suggest dates after the free consultation.

When would the transplanted hair shed if I have the operation in November 2026?

As an example, take an operation on Monday 16 November 2026. The 2–4 week shedding stage then falls from about the end of November to mid-December, and the 8 December holiday and the Christmas days sit inside the later part of it. First growth at 3–4 months appears in about February to March 2027. Density at 6–9 months shows between May and August 2027, and the end result at 12–18 months comes between November 2027 and May 2028. These are only illustrations; your own dates are agreed with the coordinator.

How do I protect my head in Bologna's wet autumn after the procedure?

Autumn is the wettest part of the year, with October at 75.4 mm and November at 77.2 mm, and November humidity reaches 81%. The programme includes advice on washing, sleep and headwear. The doctor gives specific instructions at the consultation, and the coordinator will repeat them in the messenger when you ask. Tell the coordinator how you travel and how long you are outdoors. The city's average commute is 53 minutes per weekday trip, so a realistic plan for the journey home is worth making.

Does the Italian national health service pay for a hair transplant?

According to a January 2024 article on money.it, purely aesthetic surgery is not paid by the SSN and is available only privately. The SSN does cover reconstructive surgery after trauma and burns, and certain defined functional cases. If your hair loss follows an injury or burn, ask your regional health service what applies. The coordinator can tell you which photos and records the doctor wants to see, but the coverage decision belongs to the health authority.

Can I plan the procedure around Italian public holidays?

Yes, and it helps to look at them early. Fixed holidays include 1 January, 6 January, Easter Monday, 25 April, 1 May, 2 June, 15 August, 4 October, 1 November, 8 December, 25 December and 26 December, and every Sunday counts as a holiday. These matter for the shedding weeks, follow-up photos and any time off work. Coordinators answer round the clock, so a holiday does not leave your questions waiting. The follow-up checks are at 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months.

I am a student at the University of Bologna. How do I fit the recovery into the academic year?

Start from the stages in the service text: 0–10 days of healing, shedding at 2–4 weeks, first growth at 3–4 months and density at 6–9 months. Lay them over your teaching and exam periods and think about when you want to be least visible. The university has 11 schools and 33 departments, and calendars differ, so there is no universal date. Send your plan to the coordinator with your photos, and the doctor will take it into account.

Does summer sun affect the result during the first year?

Strong light and heat are hard on healing skin, and Bologna has plenty of both, with highs of 31 °C in July and August and a record of 40 °C. The service text does not give a number of days for sun avoidance, so follow the headwear and care instructions the doctor gives you. The plan also includes a return-to-sport schedule. If your work or sport keeps you outdoors in summer, say so at the start so the date can be chosen with that in mind.

Will I need to attend follow-up checks in person in the city?

The programme includes follow-up visits at 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months, and a personal coordinator who tracks progress by photo. The first consultation is online and free, with a reply within 15 minutes, and the coordinators are available 24/7 on WhatsApp and Telegram. Ask the coordinator how each check is arranged for your case.
