Beard transplant

Grafts are taken at the back of the head, from the donor area, and moved through micro-punctures of about 1 mm — scars are not left. The shape is worked out with the doctor before the operation, with your facial features in mind. Transplanted hair grows for life: the beard can be trimmed and styled as usual.

Shaping begins at the first consultation, where the surgeon outlines the brows: reference pictures are viewed together and your facial proportions guide the drawing. I am sharing my experience, because before the operation I went through a pile of reviews myself and was looking for real stories. I had a beard transplant six months ago. Honestly, in the first days after the procedure I felt a little jittery: my face looked unfamiliar, there was slight swelling and small scabs. In the first couple of months the hair partly fell out, as the doctor had warned. But now the result truly makes me very happy) From about the 4th month active, even growth began. The transplanted hair took very well, the beard now looks as natural as possible, no bald patches are left. The beard became much thicker and denser, with the shape I had thought about for a long time. All in all, I recommend the clinic, the doctor was polite and explained everything 👍 The result is definitely worth it!

Asked most often

We share what people
ask before booking

People often say hair implants, but no artificial hair is used. In a hair transplant the doctor moves your own follicles (grafts) from the donor area to thinning or bald areas using FUE or DHI.

City Medical Centre doctors

Certainly. The clinic takes on patients from different cities and different countries, and a doctor can advise you online beforehand.

FUE: $2,200 (≈ €2,000). DHI: $2,500 (≈ €2,250). Combined: $2,700 (≈ €2,450). A free consultation and graft count gives you the final, contract-fixed price with no hidden extras.

Just one day is needed, and you sleep in your own bed.

It helps with stable pattern hair loss and a receding hairline when there are enough donor grafts. Some types of alopecia need treatment first; the doctor checks this at the consultation.

You will not feel pain — local anaesthesia covers the whole session.

With FUE, grafts are taken by tweezer with no incisions. With DHI, grafts are implanted directly using a Choi pen, without pre-made channels. The combined method mixes FUE harvesting with DHI implantation.

Donor hair volume drives the figure, and the doctor calculates it at a consultation that costs you nothing.

Reckon on 0–10 days of healing and a normal shed at 2–4 weeks. Hair returns from 3–4 months, becomes visibly dense at 6–9 months, and 12–18 months is where it ends.

Your procedure includes a lifetime hair-growth guarantee under contract.

All of it can be checked

Hair transplant seen from Florence: the short version

FUE and DHI suit a patient in Florence: no cuts, no stitches, local anaesthesia only, and the operation is over in a single day. Graft survival runs 98-100 %, and a price from $2,200 (≈ €2,000) is fixed in the contract after a free graft count, so nothing is added later.

Getting an opinion costs a patient from Florence nothing: the consultation is online and free, the doctor sees photos of the thinning area and counts the grafts. The clinic answers 24/7, and replies come inside that window.

Within 0-10 days the healing is behind you. At 2-4 weeks the transplanted hairs shed, which is normal, and the scalp looks bare again for a while. Growth begins at 3-4 months and the gaps fill in.

Sun, heat and a scalp that has to wait for its grafts

Florence lies 50 m above sea level in a basin on the Arno, ringed by the hills of Careggi, Fiesole, Settignano, Arcetri, Poggio Imperiale and Bellosguardo. For a hair transplant, the weather this basin produces matters more than the geography. In the first weeks after the procedure the scalp is the part of the body that meets that weather directly. The averages for 1991-2020 from the Florence weather station give a July mean high of 32.3 °C and a mean low of 18.4 °C. August is almost identical, at 32.4 °C and 18.5 °C. Over a whole year the city averages 71 days with a maximum of 30 °C or more.

Sunshine adds to the picture. The same station records 2,246.3 hours a year, 313.1 of them in July and only 93.0 in January. The mean daily sunshine percentage is 50% across the year. A July in Florence therefore brings more than three times as many bright hours as a January. This is a planning fact, not a medical one. The doctor decides how and when the treated area may meet sun and heat, and a weather table cannot settle that.

The care plan that comes with the procedure includes advice on washing your hair, on sleep and on headwear. The first stage after surgery, days 0-10, is when the crusts fall away and the swelling subsides. If those ten days land in July or August, ask the coordinator and the doctor before the date is fixed what covering they advise in strong sun and heat. If they land in January, the same question has a different answer. Both seasons are workable. The point is to ask before booking rather than after.

One more practical use of the sunshine figures: the free online consultation starts with photos sent to a coordinator on WhatsApp or Telegram. In a Florentine winter, with 93.0 hours of sun in the whole of January, a bright window or an outdoor spot in daylight will usually give a sharper picture of the donor area at the back of the head and the thinning zone than a lamp-lit bathroom. The doctor judges density from those images, so it is worth ten minutes of good light.

January frost, October rain and the hat question

Winter in Florence is cool rather than severe. The January mean high is 11.2 °C and the mean low 2.1 °C, and about 28.5 days a year have a minimum below freezing. The record low is -23.2 °C, set on 12 January 1985. It is an extreme from the record books, not something to plan around, but it shows the basin can be much colder than the averages suggest. After a transplant, winter makes a hat feel natural. What matters is which headwear is suitable and from which day, and that is a question for the doctor and the care plan, not for general advice found online.

Dampness is the second theme. Relative humidity averages 66.7% across the year, 71.5% in January and 60.6% in July. Annual precipitation is 788 mm, spread over 84.7 days with at least 1 mm. The wettest months are November, with 115.3 mm, and October, with 105.1 mm. The driest is July, with 24.6 mm. Thunder is recorded on about 10 days a year. For someone in the early healing stage, rain brings practical questions: whether a hood or cap is acceptable, how to keep the treated area clean and what to do if you are caught in a downpour.

None of these questions has a one-size answer in the medical material we work from. What the programme does state is that recovery is supported with instructions and that the coordinator is available around the clock. If a wet autumn week is part of your first ten days, write to the coordinator on WhatsApp or Telegram and ask. The reply comes within minutes, and you can plan the umbrella, the cap and the commute in advance.

It also helps to think about what you will be doing in the first days. A person who works from home in the first week, and a person who rides a scooter along the Arno embankments every morning, face different weather exposure. The consultation is the moment to describe your normal week in detail. The doctor can then tell you which parts of it need to change and for how long.

Counting the months: two sample timelines starting in November 2026

The growth stages after a transplant are fixed in the programme: 0-10 days of healing, 2-4 weeks for the transplanted hairs to shed (only the hairs shed, the follicles stay in place), 3-4 months for first growth, 6-9 months for density to show, and 12-18 months for the end result. Follow-up visits are at 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months, and progress is tracked by photo with a personal coordinator. Laying those stages over the Florentine calendar makes the abstract months concrete.

Take a procedure on 16 November 2026, during the wettest part of the year. The first ten days of healing finish by about 26 November. The shedding stage falls roughly between the end of November and mid-December. First growth would be expected from mid-February to mid-March 2027. Density shows from about mid-May to mid-August 2027, so the summer months, with their 313.1 hours of July sunshine, fall in the stage when the hair is thickening. The end result is looked at from November 2027 to May 2028.

Now take 18 January 2027. Healing runs to about 28 January and shedding falls in early to mid February. First growth is expected from mid-April to mid-May. Density shows between mid-July and mid-October 2027, which means the stage when the result becomes visible coincides with the hottest weeks of the year. The end result comes from January to July 2028. These are arithmetic examples built on the stated stages, not forecasts for any person. The doctor sets your own expectations after counting your grafts.

Neither option is better in general. A winter start puts the healing stage in cool, damp weather and the thickening stage in summer. A start in spring or early summer reverses that, and the ten days of healing then meet the heat and long hours of sun. What suits you depends on work, on how you feel about wearing headwear in each season and on when you want to see the end result. Bring your own calendar to the consultation, and the coordinator will help map the stages onto it.

Also remember that shedding at 2-4 weeks is normal. Someone who has the procedure in mid-January will see hair fall in early February and may feel the result has gone backwards. The follow-up at 1 month and the photo tracking exist so that this stage is explained rather than feared.

Holidays, the 24 June football final and term time

Italy's national holidays are 1 January, 6 January, Easter Monday, 25 April, 1 May, 2 June, 15 August, 4 October, 1 November, 8 December, 25 December and 26 December, and every Sunday counts as a holiday. For a procedure that takes one day at the clinic, a long weekend can seem tempting, but the stages that follow do not pause for holidays. Mark the dates when the first ten days and the shedding weeks will fall, and decide how you want to handle social occasions in those windows. The coordinators answer round the clock, 24/7, including on Sundays and public holidays, so a question never has to wait for a working day.

Florence has its own fixed dates. Calcio Fiorentino is held in the third week of June in Piazza Santa Croce: two semi-finals, then a final on 24 June, the feast of St John the Baptist and the city's patron-saint holiday. Four teams from the quartieri take part. On Easter Sunday the Scoppio del Carro takes place at Piazza del Duomo, with the cart drawn from Porta al Prato. If a date like these matters to you, count backwards from it. A procedure on 16 November 2026 would put the 24 June 2027 final inside the 6-9 month window of visible density, and an Easter date in spring would fall near first growth.

Students are a big part of the city's rhythm: the University of Florence has about 50,000 students and was founded in 1859, with roots in the Studio Fiorentino of 1321. If you study there, plan the healing days around your own timetable, and tell the coordinator what that timetable is. The same applies to shift work and to any job that involves a helmet, a uniform cap or time outdoors. The doctor needs to know about these in advance.

Public health coverage and where a private plan fits

Italy's Servizio Sanitario Nazionale was established in 1978. It provides universal coverage to citizens and residents and is run on a regional basis under the Ministry of Health, which sets the national Essential Levels of Care, known as LEA. For patients in Florence, which is in Tuscany, this is the framework around any medical decision. Its limits matter for hair restoration.

According to a January 2024 article on money.it, purely aesthetic surgery is not paid for by the SSN and is 'accessibile soltanto attraverso prestazioni private'. The same article says the SSN does cover reconstructive surgery after trauma, burns and mastectomy, and defined functional cases. Our programme lists the effects left by an injury or burn among the situations where a transplant helps. Whether any public coverage applies to a given case is not something we can say from here, and we make no promise on it. Ask the doctor at the consultation to describe your case in plain terms, and take that description to the public system if you want to check.

The free online consultation exists for exactly this kind of clarity. The doctor looks at your donor area, counts the grafts, shows the result that is achievable for you and names the final amount, which is then fixed in the contract. You owe nothing before the operation and no booking is needed to ask. Those who are not suitable, because of the contraindications listed in the programme or because their case can be solved without surgery, are told so right at the consultation.

Is summer a poor time to plan a hair transplant if I live in Florence?

We hold no rule in our materials that makes summer unsuitable. The practical point is exposure. July averages a high of 32.3 °C and 313.1 hours of sun, and the city has 71 days a year at 30 °C or above. If your first ten days of healing fall in that period, the doctor and coordinator will explain what covering and routine suit you. Ask before the date is fixed.

Can I wear a hat during a Florentine winter after the procedure?

The care plan includes advice on headwear, and the doctor will tell you during the consultation which kind and from which day. January in Florence has a mean low of 2.1 °C and about 28.5 freezing days a year, so the question will come up. Do not guess. Write to the coordinator with your situation and get a specific answer.

How should I think about the rainy months of October and November?

Those are the wettest months, with 105.1 mm and 115.3 mm of rain, and relative humidity in winter runs around 71.5%. If the first ten days of healing fall then, ask what to do about a hood, a cap or an umbrella, and how to keep the area clean when you have been out in the rain. The coordinator can answer on WhatsApp or Telegram at any hour.

If I have the procedure in mid-January 2027, when will I see results?

As an arithmetic example using the stated stages: healing runs until about the end of January, shedding falls in early to mid February, first growth shows from about mid-April to mid-May, density from mid-July to mid-October 2027, and the end result from January to July 2028. The doctor gives your own expectations after counting your grafts.

Will the public health system, the SSN, cover a hair transplant?

The SSN gives universal coverage to citizens and residents, but a January 2024 article on money.it says purely aesthetic surgery is available only privately. Reconstructive cases after trauma, burns or mastectomy are covered. Our programme lists the effects of injury or burn as a case where a transplant helps, but we cannot promise coverage. Ask the doctor to describe your case, then check with the public system.

How do I take good photos for the online consultation in Florentine light?

Use daylight. January has only 93.0 hours of sun in total, so choose a bright window or an outdoor spot at midday rather than a lamp-lit room. Send the photos to the coordinator on WhatsApp or Telegram. The doctor uses them to judge the donor area at the back of the head and the thinning zone before counting grafts.

Are coordinators available on Sundays and public holidays such as 15 August or 8 December?

Yes. Coordinators answer round the clock, 24/7, on WhatsApp and Telegram, and Italian public holidays and Sundays do not change that. The reply to the first message normally comes within 15 minutes.

Which medical conditions should I mention before choosing a date?

The programme names contraindications: trichotillomania, body dysmorphic disorder, cancer, being under 18, epilepsy, serious heart conditions, diabetes mellitus, a pacemaker, HIV/AIDS, hepatitis B or C, pulmonary embolism and patchy alopecia. Intolerance to anaesthetics also matters. Have your medical history to hand, because the doctor will go through it at the consultation.
