What did Jona Steinig say about his second hair transplant?
Jona Steinig, the 30-year-old reality star known from Germany Shore and Love Island VIP, went through a hair transplant for the second time — and documented the decision for his followers. As Promiflash reported on 7 December 2025, he announced the procedure on Instagram and explained it himself: “Ich bin gespannt auf das Ergebnis. Das teile ich euch auf jeden Fall” — he promised to share the result openly with his audience.

WhatsAppThe reason for the redo, in his own words, was his hair type: “weil ich ja so afrikanische Haare habe, eine komplett andere Haarstruktur” — afro-textured hair is a completely different structure to transplant — “dass man das halt einfach noch mal macht, damit es perfekt ist.” His first transplant, roughly two years earlier, had barely held on top: “Zum Beispiel oben hat es kaum angeschlagen, da hat die Transplantation nicht so viel geholfen.” He also had the receding corners reworked: “Hier habe ich jetzt die Geheimratsecken auch nochmal verbessert.”
That is what this article relies on: his own statements in the report. The clinic where the operation was done is not named in the article, and we do not guess. Everything below describes hair transplantation in general, not his treatment.
Why his story matters
Most celebrity hair stories stop at the before-and-after. Steinig's is more useful, because it covers the case nobody advertises: a first transplant that did not deliver. That happens — and it is not automatically a failure of the method, but of the match between the method and the patient's hair.

Curly and afro-textured hair has a curved follicle below the skin, which makes extraction and implantation technically demanding; it needs experience and the right instruments.
His decision to redo the sparse zones instead of hiding the outcome is also the correct textbook move: a second pass can densify the crown and perfect the hairline once the first grafts have settled. Surgeons usually recommend waiting at least 12 months between procedures, so the result of the first transplant can be judged in its final state.

How a hair transplant works today
A modern hair transplant is an outpatient operation under local anaesthesia. Follicles are taken one by one from the donor area at the back of the head and temples, where hair is resistant to genetic thinning, and implanted where hair is missing — at the hairline, on the crown, in the eyebrows or beard. The two main techniques are:
- FUE — grafts are extracted individually through tiny punctures and placed into channels the surgeon prepares in advance. No linear scar, no stitches.
- DHI — grafts are implanted directly with a Choi implanter pen without pre-made channels, which gives fine control over angle and direction — important for curly hair like Steinig's.

A combined approach — FUE extraction with DHI implantation — is also used. Which option fits depends on the extent of hair loss, the hair structure and the state of the donor area, so the choice is made at a consultation, not from a celebrity story.
Who is a good candidate, and how to prepare
A transplant works best when the donor area is dense enough and the hair loss has a stable pattern. Typical reasons to consider it:
- a receding hairline and thinning temples, the “Geheimratsecken” Steinig had corrected again;
- thinning at the crown or overall low density;
- correction of an earlier transplant whose density disappointed — as in his second procedure;
- hair loss after illness, stress or hormonal changes, once they have settled.
Contraindications include patchy (focal) alopecia, age under 18, trichotillomania, body dysmorphic disorder, severe heart disease, diabetes mellitus, epilepsy and intolerance to anaesthetics. Curly and afro-textured hair is not a contraindication, but it does demand a surgeon experienced with this structure. Before the operation the doctor names the tests needed and asks you to stop alcohol and blood-thinning medicines for the period he specifies; on the day of surgery the donor area is trimmed short.
What recovery and results look like
You go home the same day. Over the first ten days the scalp heals and small crusts fall off; the doctor explains how to wash the hair and how to sleep so the grafts are not disturbed. Transplanted hairs usually shed in weeks two to four — that is normal, the follicles stay under the skin — and new growth starts after three to four months.
Density becomes clearly visible at six to nine months, and the final result is assessed at 12–18 months.
That timeline is why Steinig's promise to share the result publicly is worth following: the honest verdict on a transplant only exists a year after surgery, not on the day of the operation.

How hair transplant results usually develop
- Day of surgeryLocal anaesthesia, grafts are taken and implanted; you go home the same day.
- Days 1–10Redness, swelling and small crusts; you follow the washing and sleeping instructions.
- Weeks 2–4Transplanted hairs shed. This is expected: the follicles remain under the skin.
- Months 3–4New hair begins to grow, often fine at first.
- Months 6–9Density becomes clearly visible.
- Months 12–18The final result can be assessed.

Frequently asked questions
Did Jona Steinig have a second hair transplant?
Yes. In December 2025 he announced his second hair transplant on Instagram, about two years after the first one, which had barely taken hold on top.
Why did Jona Steinig need a second transplant?
In his words, his afro-textured hair is "eine komplett andere Haarstruktur", so the first attempt "hat es kaum angeschlagen" on top. The second procedure densified the crown and improved the receding corners again.
Is curly or afro-textured hair suitable for a transplant?
Yes, but it is technically demanding: the follicle is curved below the skin, so extraction and implantation need an experienced surgeon and suitable instruments. The hair structure is a key topic at the consultation.
How long should you wait between two hair transplants?
Surgeons usually recommend at least 12 months between procedures, so that the first transplant has shown its final result before the second pass is planned.
How much does a hair transplant cost at City Medical Centre?
Prices start at $2,200 for FUE, $2,500 for DHI and $2,700 for the combined method. The final price is given after the free consultation and fixed in the contract.
