FAQ
Yes, bariatric surgery is the medical term for it. At City Medical Centre the main methods are sleeve gastrectomy (gastric sleeve) and gastric bypass; the surgeon chooses the method by your BMI and health.
Usually a BMI over 40, or over 35 with related health conditions. The surgeon confirms whether surgery suits you at the consultation.

Surgery is prescribed only when clear criteria are met
BMI is the principal gauge of how advanced obesity is, found by dividing body weight (kg) by height squared (m²). Typically, a BMI above 40 — or above 35 with serious related conditions — justifies surgery. Some patients with lower values are considered for surgery too, if non-surgical options have failed.
Many people confuse the two, but their goals are fundamentally different. Bariatric surgery is a medical treatment for obesity and related diseases. It changes how the digestive tract works, addressing the causes of excess weight and metabolism. Plastic surgery reshapes the body's outer contours; it does not treat obesity or affect metabolism.
City Medical Centre offers four main types of bariatric surgery: sleeve gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, mini gastric bypass (MGB) and SADI-S duodeno-ileal bypass. The method is chosen individually according to BMI, related conditions and the patient's goals.
Modern laparoscopic technique is what we use. Just 4 small punctures of 5 to 15 mm are needed for the operation. Cosmetic sutures mean the marks are nearly invisible after healing.
Recovery depends on what you plan to do. Office work: after 2–4 weeks. Physical work: after 1.5 months. Sport and activity: swimming after 30 days, other exercise phased in as weight drops. Travel and holidays: preferably not earlier than one month after surgery.
Your meals progress in stages: liquid food, soft food, then solid. The stress is on protein and on reducing high-calorie, fatty food.
Pregnancy after bariatric surgery can happen, though doctors advise holding off at least 12–18 months. In this period the body becomes stable, weight reaches target values and nutritional status normalizes.
Yes, after bariatric surgery vitamins cannot be skipped. As the digestive anatomy changes, some nutrients are absorbed less well, making regular vitamin and mineral supplements a permanent feature of the patient's life.
Weight can be regained after bariatric surgery, but this is very unlikely with the doctor's advice followed. Proper nutrition, avoiding high-calorie drinks and regular follow-up with City Medical Centre specialists are crucial.

All bariatric operations here are laparoscopic, performed through four small punctures of 5 to 15 mm with cosmetic sutures, so the marks become almost invisible after healing. This greatly shortens recovery. For those from Nantes, the choice between sleeve, classic bypass, mini bypass and SADI-S depends on BMI, related diseases and the result you want to reach.
It begins with a surgeon's consultation: medical history, choice of method and a recovery plan. Patients from Nantes then complete a work-up — blood and urine tests, biochemistry, HbA1c, coagulation, chest X-ray, ECG, abdominal and kidney ultrasound, leg vein Doppler and a required gastroscopy — plus consultations with a GP, endocrinologist, psychiatrist, cardiologist and, for women, a gynecologist.
If you are comparing bariatric surgery options in Nantes, look beyond the operation itself. Here the package bundles the work-up in the centre's own lab, laparoscopic surgery, the stay with meals and nursing, a doctor on hand 24/7 and a year of follow-up. Apply for a free surgeon consultation to see how this applies to your case.

The decision to have bariatric surgery was not easy for me. I worried both about the operation itself and about how my life would change afterwards. At the consultation Andrey Georgievich explained everything in detail, so little by little my fear turned into confidence. What matters most to me now is the result and the chance to treat my health and lifestyle differently.

The most recent national figures in our notes come from the Obepi survey of 2020. It found that 17% of French adults were obese. The same survey series recorded 8.5% in 1997 and 15% in 2012. Counting overweight and obesity together, 47.3% of adults were above the healthy range. These are national figures, and we did not find a regional breakdown for Pays de la Loire. We will not claim a number for Nantes that we cannot support. What the curve shows is that excess weight has moved from a niche concern to an ordinary public health topic.
Nantes is a large urban setting for that conversation. The city has 327,734 residents (2023), which makes it the sixth largest in France. The urban area has 689,036 people and the metropolitan area 1,050,815. It is the prefecture of both Loire-Atlantique and the Pays de la Loire region. A population of that size contains many adults who have tried diets, exercise programmes and medical advice for years and still live with a high BMI. For them, surgery is a medical decision, not a cosmetic one.
Bariatric surgery is a treatment for obesity and related illnesses. It is not a shortcut for people who simply want a smaller clothing size. It changes how the digestive tract works, so that weight and metabolism are tackled at their cause. The consultation material we work from lists the conditions that surgery can help: excess weight, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, varicose veins, joint disease, fatty liver disease and reproductive health problems. A person in Nantes who recognises two or three of these next to a high BMI is exactly the person who should ask a doctor whether the operation is worth discussing.
French medical guidance, as summarised from the HAS recommendation of 2009, describes bariatric surgery for severe obesity. That means a BMI of 35 or more with at least one complication that surgery can improve. Morbid obesity, a BMI above 40, is the other entry point. The same summary adds two further conditions: diet attempts that failed, and no contraindication. It also stresses multidisciplinary follow-up before and after the operation.
Our own consultation follows the same logic. The doctor generally treats surgery as justified at a BMI above 40, or above 35 when serious related conditions are present. Sometimes it is considered at lower values, when non-surgical methods have not worked. BMI is body weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. You can calculate it yourself before writing to us. The coordinator will also do it with you at the start of the conversation.
Some situations make surgery unsuitable. They are:
- age under 18
- malignant tumours
- pregnancy
- blood clotting disorders
- severe chronic or mental illness
- an acute illness or a flare-up of a chronic disease
- less than six months since breastfeeding ended
This list matters more than it may seem. A person in Nantes with a high BMI and a clotting problem needs a different plan, and an honest answer on that is part of what the free consultation is for.
The two procedures most often discussed are sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass. The sleeve reduces stomach volume, so you feel full quickly. It is usually considered for obesity without marked reflux. Gastric bypass reduces the stomach and also changes the path of food. It is usually considered for obesity combined with diabetes or reflux. Beyond these two, the clinic also carries out Roux-en-Y bypass, mini gastric bypass (MGB) and SADI-S duodeno-ileal bypass, and the method is chosen individually from BMI, related conditions and your goals.
France is one of the most thoroughly insured countries in the world. The notes we have say that 99.9% of the population is covered, and that the main fund covers 84% of people. For 2020 the general scheme counted 59.2 million beneficiaries, and the national fund insured 88% of the population. The system generally refunds 70% of most costs, and about 85% of residents also hold complementary private insurance, the mutuelle. In 2015 about 76.8% of total care spending was reimbursed. Some of these figures are dated, so treat them as a general picture, not as an entitlement for your case.
Two points need to be kept apart. First, the general rule in France is that cosmetic surgery done for personal comfort is not paid by Sécurité sociale. Exceptions exist for grave psychological or social harm, or for medical criteria. For those, the doctor files a prior agreement request with the insurer's medical adviser. If there is no reply within 15 days, it is deemed accepted, and only public or contracted establishments qualify. That mechanism describes aesthetic procedures. Bariatric surgery is a treatment for a disease, so it belongs to a different category, but the rules for it are not spelled out in the sources we use.
Second, we therefore do not tell any patient in Nantes that their operation will or will not be reimbursed. Reimbursement depends on the place where the operation takes place, on the pathway the patient follows, and on the terms of the mutuelle. The honest approach is to ask your insurer in writing what applies to your situation, and to ask the coordinator what documents we can provide. The coordinator answers 24/7 on WhatsApp and Telegram. The consultation with the bariatric doctor is free and commits you to nothing.
On waiting, the figures we have are old, from a Commonwealth Fund survey of 2010. In that survey 53% of specialist appointments took place within a month, while 28% took more than two months. Of the people who had elective surgery, 46% had it within a month, and 7% waited four months or more. Those numbers describe the situation fifteen years ago, so they do not predict anything about your case. They do explain why some people look for an online route that starts with an answer within 15 minutes.
After a bariatric operation the diet changes in stages: liquid food first, then soft food, then solid food. The main focus is protein and restricting high-calorie, fatty food. High-calorie drinks are the quiet danger, because they pass through a smaller stomach without any feeling of fullness. Vitamins and mineral supplements are essential, since the body absorbs certain nutrients less well once the anatomy has changed. Taking them becomes a lasting part of life.
We have no sourced facts about Nantes cuisine, so we will not describe it. What we can do is use the city's measurable features. Nantes has a damp, mild oceanic climate. January averages 9.3 °C at the high and 3.4 °C at the low, and July 25.1 °C and 14.3 °C. Rain falls on about 119.7 days a year, with 13.5 rainy days in December against 7.1 in July. December is also the darkest month, with 77.6 hours of sunshine against 232.6 in August. Humidity averages 81%.
For a patient this means the winter months are the hardest for habits. Weeks of grey, wet weather make people reach for comfort food and skip walks. Planning the first weeks of soft food and short walks with that in mind helps, and summer has its own pitfalls.
Public holidays and local events also shape eating. France has 11 public holidays, including 1 November, 11 November, 25 December and 1 January. Winter is also when La Folle Journée, the five-day classical music festival, takes place. Le Voyage à Nantes fills the summer, and the Rendez-vous de l'Erdre jazz festival draws about 150,000 people in September. Large gatherings, long dinners and celebrations all test a new eating pattern. We suggest deciding in advance what you will eat, how you will say no politely, and what you will drink instead of a sweet cocktail. The doctor and the coordinator can help you rehearse these situations.
Exercise after surgery follows a clear order. Office work is usually possible after 2–4 weeks, and physical work after 1.5 months. Swimming is fine after 30 days. Other exercise is added gradually as weight drops. Nantes makes the gradual part easy to arrange.
Green space covers 41% of the city, and it has 100 public parks over 218 ha. The Bicloo bike-sharing scheme offers 880 bicycles at 103 stations. The tramway has 3 lines over 43.5 km, and Semitan recorded 132.6 million journeys in 2015. The terrain is gentle, with the lowest points along the Loire at 2 m and the Butte Sainte-Anne at 38 m. The northwest high point reaches 52 m. A short walk on level ground suits early recovery, and the climbs are small enough to add later.
The Loire, the Erdre and the Sèvre Nantaise give a patient several flat riverside routes. That helps because the first walks should be short and easy to cut off. Use the tram for the return leg, and extend the distance a little each week as your strength returns.
The city is also young. The University of Nantes was founded in 1460 and had 37,140 students in 2018–19 according to its infobox, though the text gives roughly 34,500. A student or a young adult planning a procedure may find the 2–4 weeks before returning to office work fits a semester break. Planning the date around exams and holidays is a conversation to have with the coordinator.
Bariatric care is a long programme, not a single event. The final result is reached 18–24 months after surgery. French guidance emphasises multidisciplinary follow-up before and after, and our package includes support for 12 months. One coordinator stays with you from day one. Progress is checked remotely by photos, and the clinic team gives advice on diet and recovery, with scheduled check-ups of well-being, weight and test results. This works online because the questions that matter after discharge are mostly practical: what to eat this week, whether a symptom is normal, and when to book the next check.
Before the operation, there are several steps. The doctor assesses your health and orders tests: blood and urine tests, an ECG, an ultrasound and a gastroscopy, plus visits to specialists. The hospital stay is 1–5 days under observation. The operation is laparoscopic, through 4 small punctures of 5 to 15 mm, with cosmetic sutures, so the marks become almost invisible once healed. Recovery then proceeds at your own pace.
Weight regain is possible after bariatric surgery. It is very unlikely if you follow the doctor's advice: eating properly, avoiding high-calorie drinks and keeping up regular follow-up. We cannot promise an outcome, and no honest provider can. What we can promise is that you will not be left alone with a question at night. The coordinators reply round the clock on WhatsApp and Telegram, and the first consultation costs nothing.
If you live in Nantes and are wondering whether your BMI and health history make you a candidate, the first step is small. Send your height, weight and a short description of your conditions. The coordinator will calculate your BMI, explain the methods, and arrange the free consultation with the bariatric doctor.
The figures we rely on are national. The Obepi survey of 2020 found 17% of French adults obese, up from 8.5% in 1997 and 15% in 2012, with 47.3% overweight or obese. We did not find a reliable regional split for Pays de la Loire, so we do not quote one. A national figure shows the trend, but it says nothing about your own BMI, which is what the consultation works with.
We cannot say, and we do not want to guess. France covers 99.9% of the population, and the system generally refunds 70% of most costs. About 85% of people also hold a mutuelle. However, the sources we use do not state reimbursement terms for bariatric surgery. Cosmetic surgery for comfort is excluded, while medically justified procedures are treated differently. Ask your insurer in writing about your case, and ask the coordinator which documents we can supply.
French guidance summarised from the HAS recommendation of 2009 names severe obesity with a BMI of 35 or more plus at least one complication that surgery can improve. Morbid obesity, a BMI above 40, is the other route. Failed diet attempts and no contraindication are also required, with multidisciplinary follow-up before and after. Our doctor applies a similar logic and confirms suitability at the free consultation.
Our only waiting-time data come from a Commonwealth Fund survey of 2010, so they are old. In that survey 53% of specialist appointments took place within a month and 28% took more than two months. Of the people who had elective surgery, 46% had it within a month, and 7% waited four months or more. Today's waits may differ. Our online consultation gets a reply within 15 minutes and the first conversation is free.
It can. December has 13.5 rainy days, 89% humidity and only 77.6 hours of sunshine, compared with 232.6 hours in August. Dark, wet weeks make comfort food more tempting and walks less likely. The diet moves from liquid to soft to solid food, with a focus on protein and limited fatty, high-calorie food. Plan meals and short indoor or tram-assisted walks in advance, and ask the coordinator to check in during those weeks.
They require planning, not avoidance. France has 11 public holidays, and Nantes hosts La Folle Journée in winter, Le Voyage à Nantes in summer and the Rendez-vous de l'Erdre jazz festival in September. Decide beforehand what you will eat and drink, and avoid high-calorie drinks. Swimming is fine after 30 days, and other exercise is added gradually. The doctor and coordinator can help you adapt the plan to your calendar.
Gradually. Office work is usually possible after 2–4 weeks, and physical work after 1.5 months. Nantes has 880 Bicloo bicycles at 103 stations, a tramway of 3 lines over 43.5 km, and gentle terrain, with the lowest points at 2 m and the Butte Sainte-Anne at 38 m. Start with short walks on level ground. Add distance and any cycling only as your strength returns and the doctor agrees.
Support lasts 12 months. One coordinator stays with you from day one, and progress is checked remotely by photos. You receive advice on diet and recovery, and check-ups of well-being, weight and test results are scheduled. The coordinators answer round the clock on WhatsApp and Telegram. The final result is expected 18–24 months after surgery, so the contact continues well beyond the hospital stay of 1–5 days.
