Rhinoplasty in Bilbao from consultation to final shape

The aim is a nose that blends with your features and works flawlessly. Before anything is decided in Bilbao, the surgeon evaluates nose size, tip projection, the septum and nasal lining, then uses 3D modelling to show the future proportions. Rhinoplasty makes features more harmonious without losing individuality, and the predicted result is agreed with you in advance.

Here is the route in short: consultation with a 3D forecast, a full lab work-up confirming there are no contraindications, the operation, a day in the inpatient unit and then a recovery course with swelling relief and nose monitoring. Mild congestion may persist for 1–1.5 months. Nasal breathing usually returns within 1–2 weeks for patients in Bilbao.

Rhinoplasty costs $4,200 (≈ €3,750). For patients from Bilbao, this price already includes the surgery and the surgeon's work, the inpatient stay after the operation, follow-up visits and dressings, and support from a personal coordinator. It covers every type of surgery — open and closed rhinoplasty, tip correction and septorhinoplasty. The first consultation is free; the exact cost is confirmed after an in-person exam.

Patient reviews

What patients write after this operation. Reviews are translated from the original language.

Ekaterina Ivanova

For a long time I was self-conscious about the length of my nose, until a friend who had had rhinoplasty recommended this clinic. At the very first consultation they set the date of surgery and explained every stage in detail. The rhinoplasty under general anaesthesia was performed by Mareta Meirieva: the swelling went down quickly, and after just a week my nose looked natural and neat. Modern equipment, attentive staff and appointments without delays made the whole process comfortable. I recommend the clinic to anyone who values professionalism and a quality result.

Rhinoplasty

Olga Vasilyeva

This was my first visit to the clinic, for rhinoseptoplasty, and to be honest I was very nervous. At the consultation they explained every stage of the operation and recovery in detail, which calmed me down straight away. The operation was performed by Mareta Meirieva: the swelling started to go down on the third day, and the result is visible to the naked eye. Everything inside is sterile and pleasant, the atmosphere inspires trust, and the staff are always responsive. I thank the clinic for the high level of service and the warm approach!

Rhinoplasty

Marina Samarina

Everything was first-class: clean, cosy and calm. Booking and choosing the right date was easy. The nose operation went smoothly and the nerve block was done perfectly: now I breathe freely without nasal drops! It is a real lifesaver for anyone tired of endless prescriptions and ineffective procedures. I recommend it to everyone who values professionalism and results.

Rhinoplasty

Viktoria Petrova

I recently had rhinoplasty and I am absolutely delighted. At the consultation they told me about every stage in detail, so I went into surgery fully prepared. The operation went smoothly: they straightened the bridge of my nose and made the nostrils symmetrical, and the shape came out very neat. The swelling lasted a little longer than I expected, but they explained straight away that full recovery takes more time. No unpleasant surprises, everything was within the normal range. I recommend the clinic to anyone looking for a confident result and an attentive attitude.

Damp air, sirimiri and a nose that has to keep breathing

Bilbao sits about 16 km south of the Bay of Biscay, and its weather shows it. The oceanic climate brings 1,158 mm of precipitation a year, spread over 124.4 days, and an average humidity of 71 %. November is the wettest month, with 171 mm over 13.7 days, while January and December still see 130 mm and 127 mm. The very fine drizzle has its own local name, sirimiri. For anyone considering rhinoplasty, these figures are a practical reminder that the nose is a working organ. It handles damp, cool air for much of the year, and a plan for changing its shape should never ignore how well it lets you breathe.

This is why the doctor looks at function as well as appearance. Primary rhinoplasty, as the clinic describes it, adjusts the look of the nose and improves breathing when airflow is restricted. When the septum is deviated, the combined operation called rhinoseptoplasty corrects the septum and the outer shape together. Septoplasty on its own restores normal breathing while leaving the external contour untouched. If you notice that one side of your nose is regularly blocked on grey, humid days, say so when you send your first photos. That detail helps the doctor decide between these options.

Seasonal complaints deserve the same openness. The clinic's list of reasons for postponing or declining the operation includes inflammation of the ears, throat, nose or eyes, and the pre-operative tests include an X-ray of the sinuses. If you often have a streaming nose, sore throat or irritated eyes in certain months, write it down with dates before the consultation. The doctor can then judge whether your symptoms are an obstacle, a reason to wait, or a sign that breathing should be part of the plan. That is better than discovering it on the day of admission.

Winter in the city is mild by inland standards. The normal January maximum is 13.5 °C and the minimum 5.3 °C, and snow falls on only 1.7 days a year. Mild does not mean dry, though, and cold damp mornings are just the sort of conditions in which you notice how your nose copes. A short diary of how your breathing feels over a few weeks gives the doctor more useful information than a single remark such as «it is a bit stuffy». Include whether you breathe mainly through the mouth at night, and whether a cold makes the blockage clearly worse on one side.

Grey months, bright months and what that means for glasses and splint colour

Bilbao receives about 1,640 hours of sunshine a year, which is 36 % of the hours that are theoretically possible. The spread through the year is wide. December and January have only 81 hours each, while July reaches 186 hours. Summer highs are modest for a southern European city, with normal August maximums of 26.3 °C, though the record of 44.0 °C on 23 August 2023 shows that a hot spell can arrive. Light, and the way it falls on your face, changes a great deal between a winter morning and a July afternoon, and that is worth remembering when you judge your profile.

If you wear glasses every day, tell the doctor during the consultation. The frame rests on exactly the area the operation changes, so the doctor can explain how to handle it for your particular nose and what to do during the recovery period. We deliberately give no fixed timetable here, because the real extent of correction and the recovery depend on your anatomy and the technique chosen. People who use sunglasses on bright days, or who wear glasses mostly for screens, should mention that too. A realistic plan for glasses is easier to follow than a general rule you half remember.

Sun is the second practical question. In a city with only 81 hours of winter sunshine in a month, it is easy to forget sun protection, and then a bright day in spring or summer arrives. Ask the doctor how the skin of the nose should be protected while you recover, and which products suit you. The answer depends on your skin and on the stage of healing, so it should come from the doctor who examined your nose, not from a general article.

The nasal splint is the visible part of early recovery, and the clinic lets you choose its colour: purple, gold, green, light blue, pink, yellow, raspberry or carbon. It sounds like a small thing, but a splint in a colour you picked yourself is easier to live with on days when you would rather not go out. Think about what you wear most often in the dull months, and about whether you want the splint to blend in or stand out. You can state your choice to the coordinator in the same message in which you send your photos.

Putting the face on the calendar: Aste Nagusia and everything else

The best-known fixed date in the city's year is Aste Nagusia, the Semana Grande. It lasts nine days and begins on the first Saturday after 15 August, with the chupinazo fired from the Arriaga Theatre. If your face will be on show in photographs and at gatherings during those days, count backwards from them when you choose an operation date. The clinic's follow-up schedule gives you fixed anchors: check-ups at 7 days, 3 months and 6 months after the operation, plus a recovery programme that you receive after surgery. Nobody can promise exactly how your swelling will look on a particular day, so ask the doctor during the consultation what to expect in your case.

A worked example shows the arithmetic. Suppose an operation were set for 7 December 2026. The 7-day check would fall around 14 December, the 3-month check in early March 2027, and the 6-month check in early June 2027. A family celebration in late December would come very soon after the operation, whereas a late-summer event would come well after both of the later check-ups. Whatever the date you have in mind, fix the date of the operation first and tick off the events that sit close to it. Then discuss the ones that worry you. It is much easier to move an operation date before the deposit is paid than afterwards.

Think also about the preparation window. The clinic advises starting preparation 21 days before rhinoplasty. The tests include a complete blood count, biochemistry, a coagulation panel, a chest X-ray and an X-ray of the sinuses. Some results, such as the blood count and urinalysis, are valid for 2 weeks, so the doctor will tell you the right moment for each one. The operation itself takes 1.5 to 3 hours under general anaesthesia, and you spend one day in the clinic's inpatient unit afterwards. Those few days, together with the days of early recovery, should be kept clear of work deadlines.

Students and people on a fixed academic year face a similar question. The University of the Basque Country, whose Bizkaia campus is in Leioa, 11 km from the centre, had 44,921 students in 2009-10, and a large part of the city's life follows the lecture calendar. If exams or presentations are coming, tell the coordinator. A date between two busy periods usually works better than a date in the middle of one.

Anyone considering revision rhinoplasty should note a separate rule. Repeat correction of the nose after an unsuccessful or partly successful operation is performed no earlier than a year after the primary one. If your first operation was less than a year ago, the right step now is to send photos and describe what bothers you, but not to expect an immediate date.

A consultation that does not depend on the hills or the river

Bilbao's shape is distinctive. The built-up area covers about 40.65 km2 at a mean altitude of 19 m, and it is ringed by two small mountain ranges of around 400 m, with Mount Ganeta at 689 m the highest point. The Nervión and the Ibaizábal join at Basauri to form the ría of Bilbao, about 15 km long, with an average flow of around 25 m3/s. The municipality has 347,342 inhabitants according to the 2024 figures, and the metropolitan area has 1,037,847. Geography like this means that moving across the metropolitan area can take longer than the map suggests, which is one more reason the first stage of the process is entirely online.

You send photos of your nose on WhatsApp or Telegram, and coordinators reply round the clock. Within 15 minutes of your message a coordinator should answer. The doctor then gives a free assessment and, during the consultation, builds a 3D model of the future result and explains how the operation would go. The price is named after that and is fixed in the contract for medical services, and nothing is booked before you confirm the plan and the dates. The consultation carries no commitment to surgery.

Good photographs make the online consultation more useful. Use daylight, which in December and January means a window at midday rather than a lamp in the evening, and keep the camera at the level of your face. Show the nose from the front, from both sides and from slightly below, with no filters. Add a short note about breathing, earlier injuries and any previous operation on the nose. The more precise the material, the more precise the doctor's first answer will be.

Your own coordinator stays with you through the stages: before the first consultation, around the time of admission and discharge, and through recovery. The coordinator explains preparation, reminds you about tests and check-ups, helps with documents and bookings, and arranges follow-up visits. Doctor consultations remain free for a year after the operation, and support continues for 12 months. If something is unclear, you can write at any hour, and a late-evening question will not wait for an opening time.

What Spain's public health system does and does not cover for the nose

Anyone living in Spain will sooner or later ask whether the public system covers a nose operation. The common portfolio of the national health system, set out in Royal Decree 1030/2006, does not finance techniques whose purpose is mere aesthetic or cosmetic improvement. Procedures with an aesthetic purpose that have no relation to an accident, an illness or a congenital malformation are excluded from specialist care. In other words, rhinoplasty done only to change the shape of the nose is outside public healthcare. This is a statement about the rules, and it does not say whether your own symptoms qualify for assessment, which is a question for your public-sector doctor.

Waiting times are the other practical point. On 31 December 2025 Plastic Surgery had the longest average wait in the national system, 269 days. The Basque Country had 24,069 patients waiting for an operation, which is 10.81 per 1,000 inhabitants, and an average wait of 64 days, one of the shortest in the system. Those are overall averages across all specialities. They do not predict how long any given nose operation would take, and they do not tell you whether a particular case would be accepted. We quote them only so that you can compare timescales with realistic eyes.

The decision between waiting and acting privately is personal, and the clinic's role is to give you facts. In the free consultation the doctor will tell you honestly if surgery is not needed in your case, and says so plainly because an unnecessary operation helps nobody. The clinic lists conditions that make the operation unsuitable, among them age under 18, infectious diseases, cancer, blood clotting problems, decompensated chronic diseases and skin damage in the area of the planned surgery. If one of these applies to you, you will hear it at the start and not after you have made plans.

Whether your priority is shape, breathing or both, the sensible sequence is the same. Send photos, describe your symptoms with dates, receive the doctor's assessment and the 3D forecast, then decide calmly. The clinic describes the optimal age for the operation as 18 to 45, though later surgery is possible when it is medically indicated and your general health allows it.

Does the damp, rainy climate of Bilbao affect when I should plan a nose operation?

Bilbao has 1,158 mm of rain a year over 124.4 days and 71 % average humidity, so there is no truly dry season to wait for. July and August are the driest months, at 52-53 mm. The clinic gives no season-specific rule, so the doctor decides the date during the consultation, based on your health, your tests and how your nose behaves through the year. A symptom diary kept over several weeks will help that conversation.

I get blocked noses in the rainy months. Should I mention it before rhinoplasty?

Yes. Primary rhinoplasty can improve breathing when airflow is restricted, and rhinoseptoplasty corrects a deviated septum. Inflammation of the ears, throat, nose or eyes is on the list of conditions that make the operation unsuitable, and a sinus X-ray is part of the pre-operative tests. Write down when your nose is blocked, which side, and whether colds make it worse, then send this with your photos.

How can I plan the operation around Aste Nagusia?

The festival lasts nine days from the first Saturday after 15 August. Count backwards from the first day and place the check-ups at 7 days, 3 months and 6 months on the calendar. Tell the doctor during the consultation which events matter to you. The doctor cannot promise how the nose will look on a given day, but can explain what is typical for your case and whether another date would suit you better.

Will public healthcare in Spain pay for a purely cosmetic nose operation?

No. Under Royal Decree 1030/2006 the common portfolio does not finance techniques aimed at mere aesthetic or cosmetic improvement, and aesthetic procedures unrelated to an accident, illness or congenital malformation are excluded from specialist care. Whether a breathing problem could be assessed publicly is a matter for your public-sector doctor. The clinic's consultation is private, free of charge and carries no commitment to surgery.

I wear glasses daily. Should I raise this before the consultation?

Yes, mention it in your first message. The frame rests on the part of the face that the operation changes, so the doctor will explain during the consultation how to handle glasses during recovery in your case. Also say whether you use sunglasses regularly, because sun protection for the skin of the nose is another topic the doctor will cover.

Can I do everything online if I live in the metropolitan area but not in the centre?

The first stages are fully online. You send photos on WhatsApp or Telegram, the doctor assesses your nose and prepares a 3D model of the possible result, and the price is named and fixed in the contract. Coordinators reply round the clock. Your plan, preparation list and dates are confirmed before anything is booked. The operation itself involves one day in the clinic's inpatient unit, and the later check-ups are at 7 days, 3 months and 6 months.

How long should I keep my diary and photographs ready before writing?

There is no fixed period set by the clinic. A few weeks of notes on breathing, plus clear daylight photos from the front, both sides and slightly below, give the doctor a good basis. Once preparation begins, the clinic advises starting it 21 days before the operation, and the doctor will hand over the list of required tests.

I had a nose operation less than a year ago and I am unhappy with it. What should I do?

Revision rhinoplasty is performed no earlier than a year after the primary operation. You can still send photos and describe your concerns now, so the doctor can tell you what is realistic and when a repeat correction could be considered. The consultation is free and does not commit you to surgery.
