frequently asked questions

Rhinoplasty (nose job) — one of the more delicate and frequently requested plastic surgeries, meant to adjust the nose's shape to the individual proportions of the nose and the whole face. Modern rhinoplasty is not merely a procedure to change how the nose appears, but complex surgical work aimed at an aesthetic ideal without risking health.

How a nose job works for Las Palmas de Gran Canaria residents

Rhinoplasty, or nose job, reshapes the nose to fit the individual proportions of the face. It corrects congenital and acquired deformities, including changes after a nasal injury. Patients from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria most often ask about removing a dorsal hump, narrowing an overly wide nose, refining the tip or correcting the nostrils. Every surgery plan is created individually, taking into account all features of the nose.

Some details are easy to miss. Class 2 compression stockings should be bought in advance for the hospital stay, each test must be on a separate form with a stamp and signature, and chronic conditions require a specialist's clearance. After the operation, microcurrent or ultrasound therapy and a diet without salty or spicy food help speed recovery. This applies to all Las Palmas de Gran Canaria residents.

Nothing about the price is hidden. For $4,200 (≈ €3,750), residents of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria get the operation performed by the plastic surgeon, a day in the ward, follow-up appointments and dressings, and personal coordinator support throughout. The same amount covers open and closed techniques, tip correction and septorhinoplasty. Your first step is a free consultation where the doctor assesses the nose and gives a precise quote.

Patient reviews

What patients write after this operation. Reviews are translated from the original language.

Ekaterina Ivanova

For a long time I was self-conscious about the length of my nose, until a friend who had had rhinoplasty recommended this clinic. At the very first consultation they set the date of surgery and explained every stage in detail. The rhinoplasty under general anaesthesia was performed by Mareta Meirieva: the swelling went down quickly, and after just a week my nose looked natural and neat. Modern equipment, attentive staff and appointments without delays made the whole process comfortable. I recommend the clinic to anyone who values professionalism and a quality result.

Rhinoplasty

Olga Vasilyeva

This was my first visit to the clinic, for rhinoseptoplasty, and to be honest I was very nervous. At the consultation they explained every stage of the operation and recovery in detail, which calmed me down straight away. The operation was performed by Mareta Meirieva: the swelling started to go down on the third day, and the result is visible to the naked eye. Everything inside is sterile and pleasant, the atmosphere inspires trust, and the staff are always responsive. I thank the clinic for the high level of service and the warm approach!

Rhinoplasty

Marina Samarina

Everything was first-class: clean, cosy and calm. Booking and choosing the right date was easy. The nose operation went smoothly and the nerve block was done perfectly: now I breathe freely without nasal drops! It is a real lifesaver for anyone tired of endless prescriptions and ineffective procedures. I recommend it to everyone who values professionalism and results.

Rhinoplasty

Viktoria Petrova

I recently had rhinoplasty and I am absolutely delighted. At the consultation they told me about every stage in detail, so I went into surgery fully prepared. The operation went smoothly: they straightened the bridge of my nose and made the nostrils symmetrical, and the shape came out very neat. The swelling lasted a little longer than I expected, but they explained straight away that full recovery takes more time. No unpleasant surprises, everything was within the normal range. I recommend the clinic to anyone looking for a confident result and an attentive attitude.

Breathing through a nose that lives in trade-wind air

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria sits on the north-east coast of Gran Canaria, in the Atlantic, about 150 km from the African coast. The sea shapes the air you breathe every day. The trade winds bring cool, humid air, and the average relative humidity is 66 %. For a nose that is narrow, deviated or partly blocked, humid air can make the difference more noticeable, and many patients describe it as a constant feeling of one nostril working harder than the other. Rhinoplasty at City Medical Centre is not only about shape. The primary operation adjusts the appearance and improves breathing when airflow is restricted, and the doctor judges how much of each goal applies to you.

The first step is therefore a conversation about function. During the online consultation you describe when your breathing is worst: on a still, damp morning, in an air-conditioned room, during sport, or at night. You send photos of the nose to the coordinators on WhatsApp or Telegram, and the doctor assesses the anatomy. If the problem lies mainly in the septum, rhinoseptoplasty is the combined operation that corrects the septum and changes the shape of the nose in one procedure. If the septum is straight and your wish is purely about outline, the primary operation is enough. The service list also mentions nasal polyps and marked breathing problems among the reasons the operation can help. The doctor can only say which applies after seeing your case.

Rainfall in the city is small. The annual figure is about 151 mm, spread over 22 days. December is the wettest month, with 31 mm over 4.5 days, and from June to August there is practically no rain at all, with 0 mm in July. For anyone planning to be at home with a splint on the nose, this means that most of the year the weather will not push you indoors, and you can plan short, calm outings. In the dry summer months, on the other hand, the sun is the main thing to think about. Details such as when and how to protect the nose are decided by the doctor, and the recovery programme you receive after the operation covers them.

A practical point about the tests. Before rhinoplasty you need a complete set of laboratory tests: complete blood count, biochemistry, a coagulation panel, a chest X-ray and an X-ray of the sinuses. Preparation begins 21 days before the operation, and the list of tests is given at the first appointment. Because the consultation is online, the coordinator can send you that list at once, so you can book the analyses around your normal week rather than waiting for a slot.

Sun, glasses and the weeks when the splint is on show

The city gets 2,821 hours of sun a year. July has 308 hours and December still has 179. If you wear glasses or sunglasses every day, as many people with this much sunlight do, the question of what rests on the bridge of the nose becomes concrete. After rhinoplasty the nose is covered by a splint, and the doctor tells you during the consultation and in the recovery programme how and when anything may touch the bridge. Do not decide this yourself and do not improvise with frames. Ask the question at the consultation and write down the answer, because it affects what you buy, wear and carry in the first weeks.

Temperatures here are mild all year, which helps with planning clothes and daily routine. The annual average is 24.2 °C for the daily maximum and 18.0 °C for the minimum. August is the warmest month, with a maximum of 27.5 °C and a minimum of 21.6 °C. January is the coolest, with a maximum of 20.8 °C and a minimum of 15.0 °C. Even the coldest month is not harsh, so you will not need heavy scarves or high collars that rub against a healing face. Collars that pull over the head are best avoided; button-front shirts and wide necklines are easier, a point you can raise at the consultation.

The splint itself is something the clinic treats as a small design choice. You pick its colour: purple, gold, green, light blue, pink, yellow, raspberry or carbon. People who spend long days outdoors under strong light often choose a calm colour for the sake of photographs. Others pick the brightest one on purpose. Either way, the choice is yours and costs nothing extra to discuss with the coordinator.

The sea is part of life here. The sea temperature averages 21 °C over the year, with a minimum of 19.1 °C in February and March and a maximum of 23.4 °C in September and October. Las Canteras, the largest beach in the city, stretches 3,100 m, and Las Alcaravaneras and La Laja add more than 800 m and about 1,200 m. Many people will want to know when they can return to the water. We do not state a number of days here, because the doctor sets it individually and it depends on your recovery. Raise it at the consultation. It is a fair question and it helps you choose between a plan that begins at the end of a swimming season and one that begins just after it.

Choosing a month when your face is on show

Rhinoplasty is not an operation you hide from the calendar. The splint, the swelling and the process of settling do not fit every week of the year. In Las Palmas there are a few fixed points that many people care about. The Carnival takes place every February. Its main parade gathers around 200,000 people along a 6 km route, and the Drag Queen Gala has existed since 1998. If you want your nose to look as it will in the final result, or at least not to be covered, during Carnival season, you plan the operation well before it. If you plan to enjoy the parade as a spectator in a crowd, you may prefer to plan the operation afterwards, so that the recovery period fits a quieter stretch. For example, a patient thinking about February 2027 can talk to the coordinator in November about whether the recovery programme will fit comfortably before that date.

The Fiestas de San Juan, the anniversary of the founding of the city, take place in June. Summer weddings, graduations and family gatherings also tend to cluster in this period. Our advice is simply to count backwards from the event. Decide when you want to be fully presentable, then ask the doctor what the timeline looks like. The service description gives some fixed points: the operation takes 1.5 to 3 hours depending on complexity, you stay at the clinic for one day, and check-ups are at 7 days, 3 months and 6 months. Beyond those, the doctor will explain the stages of swelling and settling at the consultation, and no one should promise a date by which everything is invisible.

The second thing to consider is revision. Revision rhinoplasty is a repeat correction after an unsuccessful or partly successful operation, and it is done no earlier than a year after the primary one. If you have had a nose operation before and are unhappy with the result, the sensible plan is to consider the calendar in terms of whole seasons, not weeks. A year from your first operation, plus recovery, may fall on either side of a holiday you care about. That is something to arrange honestly at the consultation, with your photos and your previous operation notes in front of the doctor.

A city of students, young families and busy schedules

Las Palmas has 383,516 inhabitants in the municipality and about 635,000 in the urban area, which makes it the ninth largest city in Spain. The municipality covers 100.55 km2, with a density of 3,814 inhabitants per km2. It rises from 8 m above sea level at its lowest point to 300 m at its highest, and has five administrative districts. These numbers describe a compact, busy city, where many people combine work, study and family life with little free time. That is the main reason an online consultation is useful. You do not need to leave the workday to find out whether the operation suits you. You send photos from your phone, and the coordinator replies within minutes, around the clock.

The University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria was founded in 1989 and had 20,356 students in the 2019/2020 academic year, according to one account, or 22,707 according to the institution's own summary. We mention this because the usual age range for rhinoplasty is 18 to 45, a period when many people are studying or building a career. The operation is not for anyone under 18, and the nose should have finished forming. A student who turns 18 during the university year can send photos and ask for a first assessment, then choose a time for the operation that falls between exam periods. The doctor decides whether the timing is medically sound; you decide whether it suits your timetable.

Working adults face a different calendar problem. The operation takes only one day at the clinic, but recovery and check-ups occupy more time. The coordinators describe each stage in advance: the preparation tests, the deposit that reserves the date, the operation, one day as an inpatient, then the recovery programme. They remind you of tests and check-ups, and they keep in touch through every step. You will not need to chase anyone. Your own coordinator is the first contact from your first message to the consultation, another supports you before and during the stay, and a third accompanies the recovery until the final check-up.

Waiting lists, public cover and what a private decision looks like

In Spain, the common portfolio of the national health system (SNS) is set out in Royal Decree 1030/2006. It does not fund techniques whose purpose is purely cosmetic improvement. Procedures with an aesthetic aim that are unrelated to an accident, an illness or a congenital malformation are excluded from specialised care. In plain terms, an operation done only to change the look of the nose is outside public healthcare. If the nose has been injured, or breathing is clearly impaired, the situation can be different, and your own family doctor is the person to ask what the public system covers in your case.

Even where public care applies, waiting is part of the picture. On 31 December 2025 the SNS had 853,509 patients on surgical waiting lists, with an average wait of 121 days, and 21.6 % had waited more than six months. Plastic surgery is the specialty with the longest average wait: 269 days. In the Canary Islands, 32,131 patients were on the structural surgical waiting list, 14.59 per 1,000 inhabitants, with an average wait of 106 days. These figures are not a judgement. They simply show why some people prefer to plan a private procedure on a date they choose.

Choosing a private route does not mean skipping steps. The first consultation is free and has no obligation to proceed. At it, the doctor builds a 3D model of the expected result and explains the course of the operation. The cost is quoted after that and recorded in the contract. The service includes the operation, general anaesthesia, result modelling, the inpatient stay, meals at the clinic, follow-up visits and dressings, personal coordinator support and all necessary consumables. Surgeon consultations remain free for a year afterwards. Read the contract calmly, and ask the coordinator about anything that is unclear before you pay the deposit.

Health, weight and general condition before anaesthesia

The Spanish national statistics institute reported in 2020 that 64.6 % of people aged 15 and over in the Canary Islands rated their own health positively, the lowest share among all the autonomous communities. That does not tell you anything about you personally, but it is a reminder that a good preoperative check matters. General anaesthesia is used for rhinoplasty, so your general health counts as much as your nose. The contraindications listed include infectious diseases, cancer, decompensated chronic diseases, blood clotting problems, skin damage in the area of the planned operation, and inflammation of the ears, throat, nose or eyes. Mental health disorders and age under 18 are also on the list.

Nationally, the European Health Survey reports that 16.0 % of adults aged 18 and over in Spain have obesity, and 37.6 % are overweight, so that 53.6 % are above the weight considered normal. Chronic conditions are common as well: high blood pressure affects 19.0 %, high cholesterol 15.3 %, and osteoarthritis 14.4 %. We cite these figures only to make one point: many adults live with a chronic condition, and it is normal to have one when you start planning an operation. What matters is that you tell the doctor honestly. If a condition is stable and compensated, the doctor assesses it and decides. If it is decompensated, the operation waits.

Send your photos and a short list of your medicines and diagnoses with your first message. The doctor will tell you at no cost whether rhinoplasty seems suitable, and, if it does not, will say so plainly. This is one of the stated aims of the consultation: to give an honest answer, with facts only, and to spare you an unnecessary expense.

From the first message to the first check-up

For a patient in Las Palmas, the process begins on a phone. You write to the coordinators on WhatsApp or Telegram, and they reply within 15 minutes. You send photos of the nose from the front, from the side and from below, as the coordinator describes. The doctor reviews the anatomy of your nose and your wishes and picks the technique. You see a 3D model of the future result. Only when you are satisfied do you move on to reserving a date.

The four main types of operation each suit different situations. The primary operation is for shape and breathing and is best suited to people aged 18 to 45. Revision is for correcting an earlier result, at least a year later. Rhinoseptoplasty tackles a deviated septum together with the shape. There are also reconstructive versions of the septal operation, one of them with a rib cartilage graft. Which of these is relevant depends on your anatomy, so the doctor chooses it, not the patient and not the coordinator.

When you have decided, you pay a deposit to reserve the date, and the terms are set out in the contract for medical services. You complete the tests, spend one day at the clinic under general anaesthesia, and then follow the recovery programme. Check-ups at 7 days, 3 months and 6 months monitor the healing, and your coordinator books them. The real extent of correction and recovery depends on your anatomy, and the typical averages given are for general guidance only.

Does the humid trade-wind air make nasal breathing problems worse, and will rhinoplasty help?

The air in Las Palmas is cool and humid, with an average relative humidity of 66 %, and some people notice a blocked or uneven nose more in such conditions. Whether the operation helps depends on the cause. Primary rhinoplasty adjusts appearance and can improve breathing when airflow is restricted, and rhinoseptoplasty also corrects a deviated septum. The doctor will tell you at the consultation, from your photos and your description, which of these applies to you.

Can I plan my rhinoplasty so that the splint is off before Carnival in February?

It is possible to count backwards from the date, but no one can fix the exact day when swelling will have settled. The operation takes 1.5 to 3 hours, you stay one day at the clinic, and check-ups are held at 7 days, 3 months and 6 months. Talk to the coordinator in good time, for example in November for a February event, and ask the doctor how your own recovery is likely to run. The Carnival parade gathers around 200,000 people along 6 km, so many people want to look their best.

What should I ask about glasses and sunglasses, given how sunny the city is?

The city has 2,821 hours of sun a year, so sunglasses are an everyday item for many people. After the operation the nose is covered by a splint, and the doctor explains how and when anything may rest on the bridge. Ask about it at the consultation and follow the recovery programme you are given. Do not try frames earlier than advised.

Does the public health system pay for a nose operation in Spain?

According to Royal Decree 1030/2006, the common portfolio of the SNS does not fund techniques aimed at mere aesthetic or cosmetic improvement. Procedures with an aesthetic purpose unrelated to an accident, illness or congenital malformation are excluded from specialised care. If your problem is an injury or a clear breathing difficulty, ask your family doctor what is covered in your case. The coordinators at City Medical Centre can explain what the private consultation involves.

How long are the waiting lists for plastic surgery, and does that affect my decision?

On 31 December 2025 the national average wait for plastic surgery in the SNS was 269 days, the longest of any specialty, while the average for all surgery was 121 days. In the Canary Islands the average surgical wait was 106 days, with 32,131 patients on the list. These figures are general, and a private operation allows you to choose a date. You still need the consultation, the tests and a signed contract before the date is reserved.

I am a student at the university. Can I have the operation if I am just 18?

Rhinoplasty is not carried out under 18. The suitable range stated is 18 to 45, when the nose has finished forming and tissues still heal well. At 18 or older you can send photos and get a first assessment at no cost. The University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, founded in 1989, had over 20,000 students in 2019/2020, so many young adults plan around exams. Agree the timing with the coordinator and the doctor.

How do I prepare for the tests if I live in a city with busy days?

Preparation starts 21 days before the operation, and you receive the list of required tests at the first appointment. These include a complete blood count, biochemistry, a coagulation panel, a chest X-ray and an X-ray of the sinuses. Because the consultation is online, the coordinator sends the list straight away, and you can arrange the tests around your work. They also remind you of the check-ups.

Will I be able to swim at Las Canteras after the operation?

The beach is 3,100 m long, and the sea averages 21 °C, with a low of 19.1 °C in February and March. The date when you can return to the water is set by the doctor, not by a general rule, and depends on how you heal. Mention your swimming habits at the consultation so the plan fits your routine.

Does the climate here make recovery easier, and what clothes suit it?

The climate is mild. Even in January the maximum averages 20.8 °C and the minimum 15.0 °C, and in August the maximum is 27.5 °C. You do not need heavy scarves or tight collars. Choose clothing that does not pull over the head, such as button-front shirts. Rainfall is low: about 151 mm a year over 22 days, and 0 mm in July. The doctor and the recovery programme set the real rules.

Is it a problem if my general health is not perfect?

Not necessarily. In 2020, 64.6 % of people aged 15 and over in the Canary Islands rated their health as good, the lowest share among Spanish regions, and chronic conditions such as high blood pressure (19.0 % nationally) are common. What matters is that the condition is stable and that you tell the doctor about it. Decompensated chronic diseases and blood clotting problems are contraindications, and the preoperative tests help to assess them. General anaesthesia is used, so your overall condition is checked carefully.

When can I consider a revision if I am unhappy with an earlier nose operation?

Revision rhinoplasty is done no earlier than a year after the primary operation. If you had a nose operation and want it corrected, send your photos and any notes you have, and the doctor will assess whether and when it makes sense. Count the year plus the recovery, and think about the events in your calendar, such as the San Juan festivities in June, so that the timing suits you.
