How obesity surgery works for Las Palmas de Gran Canaria residents

Bariatric surgery is a medical treatment for obesity and related diseases. Unlike plastic surgery, it changes how the digestive tract works and addresses the causes of excess weight. For patients from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, four main methods are available: sleeve gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, mini gastric bypass and SADI-S. Each is chosen individually based on BMI, related conditions and personal goals.

Step one: consultation. Step two: laboratory and instrumental tests, gastroscopy and specialist reviews. Step three: surgery through small punctures by a permanent team, not a duty shift. Step four: 1–5 days in the ward with meals and nursing. Step five: a staged diet and a year of follow-up. People in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria follow this route from start to finish.

There are no hidden fees: one package covers everything required for the result. It brings together experienced surgeons, round-the-clock care, meals, nursing, a coordinator and a legal result guarantee. Tick the situations that apply to you and request a free check of your case; a coordinator will contact patients from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to arrange the next steps.

What Spain's weight statistics say, and what they leave out

The European Health Survey 2020, published by Spain's national statistics institute (INE), found obesity in 16.0 % of people aged 18 and over. The figure was 16.5 % for men and 15.5 % for women. Overweight accounted for another 37.6 %, so 53.6 % of adults were above the weight considered normal. These are figures for the whole country. The summary we rely on gives no separate obesity rate for the Canary Islands, so we do not quote one.

The same survey does say something about the islands. In Canarias, 64.6 % of people aged 15 and over rated their health positively in 2020, the lowest share of any autonomous community. This is not a diagnosis and it does not show that weight is the cause. It is a reminder that a resident of Gran Canaria has good reason to treat health questions seriously, including questions about body weight and the conditions that come with it.

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is a large city. The municipality had 383,516 inhabitants in 2024, ninth in Spain, and the urban area is home to about 635,000 people. The city sits in the north-east of the island on the Atlantic, with a density of 3,814 inhabitants per km². In a place of this size, many adults will be asking the same question: is weight loss surgery a sensible option for me, or only a last resort? Coordinators at City Medical Centre answer it online, round the clock, in WhatsApp or Telegram chats.

The national survey also lists the chronic problems people report. Hypertension leads at 19.0 %, high cholesterol follows at 15.3 %, and osteoarthritis is third at 14.4 %. Low back pain is reported by 13.7 %. Several of these appear in the list of conditions that the bariatric programme can help with: hypertension, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, joint disease and fatty liver disease. A high BMI does not explain every case of high blood pressure or joint pain. But if you already live with one of these conditions and your BMI is high, the doctor will weigh them together during the consultation, not one at a time.

Reading the national benefit rules without false expectations

Many people in Las Palmas first ask whether the public health system will pay for the operation. The answer is in Spain's common portfolio of services of the National Health System, set out in Royal Decree 1030/2006. Two points from it matter here.

First, the portfolio includes the adjustable gastric band for adults whose BMI is above 40 kg/m², or above 35 with significant associated illness. It applies after conservative alternatives have failed: diet, exercise and behaviour modification. The decree names the adjustable band specifically. We do not claim that it covers sleeve gastrectomy or gastric bypass in every case, so confirm with your own health service what applies to you.

Second, the portfolio excludes techniques whose purpose is "mere aesthetic or cosmetic improvement". Procedures with an aesthetic purpose and no link to an accident, illness or congenital malformation are outside specialised public care. Bariatric surgery is a medical treatment of obesity and related illnesses. It is not a cosmetic procedure, and it differs from plastic surgery in both purpose and effect. Bariatric surgery changes how the digestive tract works to tackle the causes of excess weight and metabolism. Plastic surgery reshapes the outer contours of the body and does not treat obesity.

The medical thresholds on our side are close to the ones in the decree. Surgery is generally justified at a BMI above 40, or above 35 when serious related conditions are present. It is sometimes considered at lower values when non-surgical methods have not worked. The doctor confirms the indication at the consultation. BMI is body weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. You can work it out yourself before writing to us, and the coordinator will check it again.

The decree's wording has a practical consequence. Before anything else, you will probably need a record of what you have already tried: diets, exercise programmes, any supervised attempts. The doctor's third criterion is that standard approaches to weight loss have not worked before. If you can describe your earlier attempts in a message, the assessment goes faster. Photos sent on WhatsApp or Telegram, together with your height and weight, are the starting point for the free doctor assessment.

Waiting lists as a planning factor

Waiting times in the National Health System are public, and they help explain why people look at other routes. The initial publication of the surgical waiting-list figures for 31 December 2025 showed 853,509 patients waiting nationwide, with an average wait of 121 days. 21.6 % had been waiting more than six months. The ministry later issued a correcting note because of data from Castilla-La Mancha, so treat these numbers as indicative.

For the Canary Islands, the same reporting shows 32,131 patients in structural surgical waiting at 31 December 2025. That is 14.59 per 1,000 inhabitants, with an average wait of 106 days. Within the islands, traumatology alone accounted for 8,592 waiting patients, with an average of 137 days. Nationally, hip prosthesis waits averaged 98 days, and 13.7 % exceeded the maximum period of 180 days. Knee prosthesis waits averaged 105 days, with 15.9 % beyond that limit.

Why bring joint waiting times into a bariatric text? Osteoarthritis is the third most common chronic diagnosis in Spain, and excess weight is part of the picture for many joint problems. A person whose knees or hips hurt may be queuing for an orthopaedic procedure while also carrying a BMI that complicates it. The doctor can help you decide whether weight reduction should come first. We do not promise that the operation will remove a joint problem. We only say that joint disease is on the list of conditions that bariatric surgery helps with, and the consultation is the place to discuss it.

Outpatient first consultations show the same pattern. Nationwide, 84.42 per 1,000 people were waiting for a first specialist consultation at 31 December 2025, with an average wait of 102 days. Traumatology had the longest consultation wait at 132 days. We cannot say how long a bariatric first consultation takes in the public system in your area, because the figures we use do not break that out. With us, the first online consultation is free and the coordinator replies within 15 minutes. The price is named by the doctor and fixed in the contract before you commit to anything.

A free consultation does not oblige you to operate. You can use it to compare your options, including whatever your public health service can offer, and then decide.

Choosing between sleeve and bypass, step by step

City Medical Centre describes four main bariatric methods: sleeve gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, mini gastric bypass (MGB) and SADI-S duodeno-ileal bypass. The two most often discussed with new patients are the sleeve and the bypass, and they differ in purpose.

In sleeve gastrectomy the stomach volume is reduced. The main aim is weight loss and a quick feeling of fullness. It suits obesity without marked reflux. In gastric bypass the stomach volume is reduced and the path of food is changed. The aim is weight loss and better metabolism, and the indications are obesity, diabetes or reflux. Both are done under general anaesthesia, with a hospital stay of 1–5 days under observation.

The operation is laparoscopic, through 4 small punctures of 5 to 15 mm. Cosmetic sutures are used, so once healed the marks become almost invisible. We say "almost invisible", not "invisible", and we do not promise how any individual scar will look.

Before the operation you have blood and urine tests, an ECG, an ultrasound and a gastroscopy, and you see the relevant specialists. The doctor gives you the exact list at the consultation. A reserved date comes after the plan is agreed and the terms are in the contract.

The list of people for whom surgery is not suitable is just as important as the list of those it helps. Age under 18, malignant tumours, pregnancy, blood clotting disorders, severe chronic and mental illness, acute illness or flare-ups of chronic disease, and less than six months since breastfeeding ended are all contraindications. If something on that list applies, tell the coordinator in the first message. It saves you time and spares you disappointment.

Eating after the operation in a city by the Atlantic

The diet after bariatric surgery moves in stages from liquid to soft to solid food. The main focus is protein and restricting high-calorie, fatty food. We have no sourced facts about the traditional cuisine of Gran Canaria, so we say nothing about which local dishes fit or do not fit. In the consultation, bring your usual weekly menu instead, and the coordinator will go through it with you stage by stage. Avoiding high-calorie drinks is also a recurring point in the follow-up advice.

Vitamins are not optional. After the operation the digestive anatomy has changed, and the body absorbs some nutrients less well, so regular vitamin and mineral supplements become a lasting part of life. Weight regain is possible, but it is very unlikely if you follow the doctor's advice: proper eating, no high-calorie drinks, and regular follow-up with City Medical Centre specialists.

The setting of Las Palmas has some features that support an active routine. The Playa de Las Canteras is 3,100 m long and is the largest beach in the city. Las Alcaravaneras is a little over 800 m, and La Laja about 1,200 m. The sea averages 21 °C over the year, from a low of 19.1 °C in February–March to a high of 23.4 °C in September–October. Daytime highs average 24.2 °C, with August the warmest month at 27.5 °C and January the coolest at 20.8 °C. Rainfall is about 151 mm a year, and from June to August there is practically none. Sunshine totals 2,821 hours a year, 308 in July and 179 in December. The trade winds bring fresh, humid air, and average relative humidity is 66 %.

These facts say nothing about your own recovery, but they do help with planning. Our guidance on activity is specific. Office work is possible after 2–4 weeks, and physical work after 1.5 months. Swimming is fine after 30 days, and other exercise is added gradually as weight drops. So the sea at 19.1 °C in February or 23.4 °C in September is something to look forward to once the doctor agrees, not something to rush into. Exercise in the first weeks is limited to what your plan allows.

The calendar of the city also affects planning. The Carnival takes place every February, and its main parade brings together about 200,000 people along a 6 km route. The Fiestas de San Juan, the anniversary of the city's founding, are held in June. During busy weeks it may be harder to attend a follow-up or keep to a gradual diet, so tell the coordinator in advance if you expect a full social calendar. Do not read this as a restriction. It is a reason to agree on dates early, while the plan is still being made.

A year of support and why a long horizon matters

The package includes support for 12 months. From day one one coordinator stays with you, and the remote progress check is done by photos. After discharge you receive advice on diet and recovery and scheduled check-ups of your well-being, weight and test results. Because the consultation is online, the same format works for follow-up. You do not need to rearrange your week around appointments.

The coordinators divide the work. One helps before the first consultation, answers questions and helps you choose a convenient date. Another supports preparation and keeps in touch during the stay. A third stays in contact while you recover and schedules follow-ups with the operating doctor.

It is useful to know the timeline. The stay is 1–5 days under observation, and return to work comes after 2–4 weeks. The final result appears 18–24 months after the operation. That is a long horizon, and it is why the follow-up year matters. Weight keeps changing well after you are back at work, and your habits are still forming.

Pregnancy needs its own mention. It can happen after bariatric surgery, but doctors advise waiting at least 12–18 months. In that period the body becomes stable, weight reaches target values and nutritional status normalises. If you are planning a family, raise it at the first consultation, since it affects timing.

For a student or younger adult, the university is a notable feature of the city. The University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria was founded in 1989 and had 20,356 students in the 2019/2020 course (22,707 according to its summary sheet). Whether you are a student, a worker or retired, the practical point is the same: an online follow-up fits around lectures, shifts or family duties. Tell the coordinator which times you prefer, and she will arrange the schedule.

Questions specific to Las Palmas and Spain

Does the Spanish public system cover bariatric surgery for someone living in Las Palmas?

The common portfolio of the National Health System (Royal Decree 1030/2006) includes the adjustable gastric band for adults with a BMI above 40 kg/m², or above 35 with significant associated illness, after conservative alternatives have failed. It excludes procedures done for mere aesthetic improvement. The decree names the adjustable band, so we cannot say it covers sleeve or bypass. For your own case, check with your health service, and use our free consultation to compare the options.

What does the 2020 health survey say about obesity in Spain?

The European Health Survey 2020 by Spain's INE reported obesity in 16.0 % of adults aged 18 and over (16.5 % of men and 15.5 % of women), overweight in 37.6 %, and 53.6 % above normal weight. These are national figures. The summary we use gives no separate obesity rate for the Canary Islands, though it shows that Canarias had the lowest share of residents rating their health positively, 64.6 %.

How long do people wait for surgery in the Canary Islands public system?

At 31 December 2025 the Canary Islands had 32,131 patients in structural surgical waiting, 14.59 per 1,000 inhabitants, with an average wait of 106 days. These figures cover surgery in general and do not give a separate wait for bariatric operations. Our online consultation is free, and the doctor names the price and plan before you decide.

Should I deal with joint pain or high blood pressure before or after the operation?

That is a decision for the doctor during the consultation. Hypertension and joint disease are on the list of conditions that bariatric surgery helps with, and in Spain osteoarthritis is the third most common chronic diagnosis at 14.4 %, after hypertension at 19.0 % and high cholesterol at 15.3 %. The doctor will look at your tests and your BMI together and tell you whether bariatric treatment, another treatment, or a combination makes sense.

Can I plan the date around the February Carnival or the June fiestas?

Yes, tell the coordinator in your first message. The Carnival is held every February and its main parade draws about 200,000 people along 6 km. The San Juan fiestas take place in June. The diet moves from liquid to soft to solid food, and the high-calorie, fatty food is restricted, so a crowded social period can make the early weeks harder. Dates are agreed in the plan and fixed in the contract before anything is booked.

When can I swim at Las Canteras after the operation?

Swimming is fine after 30 days. Other exercise is added gradually as weight drops. The sea at Las Canteras averages 21 °C over the year, from 19.1 °C in February–March to 23.4 °C in September–October. Ask the doctor to confirm that your own recovery allows it. Return to office work is after 2–4 weeks and to physical work after 1.5 months.

Is follow-up really possible online when I live on an island?

Yes. The package includes 12 months of support, with one coordinator from day one and a remote progress check by photos. After discharge you get advice on diet and recovery and scheduled check-ups of well-being, weight and test results. The final result is expected 18–24 months after the operation, so the follow-up continues to matter over a long period. Vitamins and mineral supplements stay a lasting part of life after the operation.
