Not every patient is a candidate

A verdict that surgery is unnecessary is given openly during the consultation, with nothing spent for nothing. Below are the situations in which a transplant is genuinely justified.

Beard transplant

Grafts are harvested from the donor area at the back of the head and moved through micro-punctures of about 1 mm, without leaving scars. I am sharing my experience, because before the operation I went through a pile of reviews myself and was looking for real stories. I had a beard transplant six months ago. Honestly, in the first days after the procedure I felt a little jittery: my face looked unfamiliar, there was slight swelling and small scabs. In the first couple of months the hair partly fell out, as the doctor had warned. But now the result truly makes me very happy) From about the 4th month active, even growth began. The transplanted hair took very well, the beard now looks as natural as possible, no bald patches are left. The beard became much thicker and denser, with the shape I had thought about for a long time. All in all, I recommend the clinic, the doctor was polite and explained everything 👍 The result is definitely worth it!

Asked most often

We cover what people
ask before booking

People often say hair implants, but no artificial hair is used. In a hair transplant the doctor moves your own follicles (grafts) from the donor area to thinning or bald areas using FUE or DHI.

City Medical Centre doctors

Yes. Living in another city, or another country entirely, is no barrier, and an online review of your case is arranged first.

The base prices are $2,200 (≈ RON 10,500) (FUE), $2,500 (≈ RON 12,000) (DHI) and $2,700 (≈ RON 13,000) (combined). The precise cost is determined at a free consultation and graft count, then fixed in your contract.

Reckon on a single day, ending with a return to your home.

It helps with stable pattern hair loss and a receding hairline when there are enough donor grafts. Some types of alopecia need treatment first; the doctor checks this at the consultation.

Local numbing is used, which makes the operation painless.

With FUE, grafts are taken by tweezer with no incisions. With DHI, grafts are implanted directly using a Choi pen, without pre-made channels. The combined method mixes FUE harvesting with DHI implantation.

Graft count is calculated by the doctor at no cost, based on an assessment of your donor zone.

Your scalp heals in 0–10 days. The grafted hairs let go at 2–4 weeks, which is normal. New growth appears at 3–4 months, density is marked from 6–9 months, and the result finalises at 12–18 months.

A lifetime guarantee of hair growth is included, confirmed in your contract.

The procedure in plain words for Constanta

Nothing heavy is involved for anyone in Constanta. FUE and DHI dispense with cuts and stitches altogether, local anaesthesia keeps the patient awake and comfortable, and the surgery closes on the same day it opens.

Nobody in Constanta pays for the first step. The consultation happens online, the doctor sees photos of the thinning area and gives the graft count from them. The clinic is reachable 24/7, which is a normal part of the day there.

Healing takes 0-10 days. At 2-4 weeks the transplanted hairs shed, and that is the normal course of things rather than a sign of failure. Growth starts again at 3-4 months, and from that point the change becomes visible to you.

Page medically reviewed by Anastasia A. Kolesnik, hair transplant doctor. Review date: .

Sun, salt and humidity: what the coastal climate asks of a healing scalp

Constanta sits on the Black Sea coast, and the 1991-2020 climate normals describe it as humid subtropical. The numbers matter for a fresh transplant because the first days are about keeping the treated area calm. In July and August the mean daily high is 27.9 °C, with lows around 19.7-19.9 °C. July alone brings about 331 hours of sunshine, and the record high is 38.5 °C. A scalp that has just had grafts placed is not a surface to leave in that light. The crusts of the first days, the pink skin that follows and the donor area at the back of the head all need shade, and a loose, clean, breathable head covering is the usual answer. The coordinator will send the exact instructions on headwear, washing and sleep after the consultation, so you do not have to improvise.

Humidity is the second local factor. Annual relative humidity in Constanta averages 82%, and December reaches 88%, while July is drier at 76%. Damp air does not harm grafts in itself, but it changes how a head covering feels. A woollen hat that is slightly damp from sea air is an irritant for healing skin, and a cap worn for hours in warm, muggy weather can make the scalp sweat. The practical rule the doctor will discuss is simple: choose clean, soft, loose fabrics, change them often and do not press anything tight against the recipient area during the early healing days.

The sea itself deserves a plain mention. Constanta has a 13 km beach, and Mamaia, a district of the city, runs along a strip of land 8 km long between the sea and Lake Siutghiol. Salt water, hot sand and sun exposure are all things to keep away from the transplanted area while it heals. The service plan includes a schedule for returning to sport and hair care, and the doctor will tell you when each activity makes sense. Do not decide this on your own because the weather looks inviting.

None of this is a reason to delay treatment. It is a reason to match the date of the procedure to the weather you will actually be living in during the first weeks.

Choosing a season: when to schedule the day of the procedure

The procedure is done in one day with local anaesthesia, and after that the weather decides how comfortable the first ten days are. According to the plan, the 0-10 day stage is when the crusts fall away and the swelling subsides. In Constanta, the 1991-2020 normals give a January mean high of 4.7 °C and a mean low of -1.2 °C, with about 22 snowy days a year, mostly in January and February. The record low is -25.0 °C. For a patient who has just had grafts placed, a cold morning is not dangerous in itself, but it does mean wearing a head covering outdoors. A soft, clean, loose hat is what gets you through a cold commute, and it must not rub the treated area.

Summer has the opposite problem. From mid-June to early September the beach season is in full swing in Mamaia and sun exposure is highest. That is the stretch when a freshly treated scalp is most tempted to be uncovered, and the 331 hours of July sunshine are not forgiving. Many patients find that spring and autumn sit between the extremes. The wettest months in Constanta are May with 44.8 mm and October with 44.4 mm, while February is the driest at 25.9 mm. Rain is not a medical barrier, but umbrellas, hoods and damp hats are small practical matters worth thinking about before you choose a date.

The decision is yours, and the doctor will give advice after the photos have been reviewed. Seasons are one input among several, along with your work schedule, your family calendar and the number of grafts planned. Because the first online consultation is free and you owe nothing for the quote, you can ask about timing before committing to anything. The coordinator answers on WhatsApp and Telegram round the clock, so even a late-evening question about whether a certain month would suit you gets a reply.

Mapping the growth months onto the Romanian calendar

A transplant is a project that lasts more than a year, so it helps to lay the stages over real dates. Take an example: a procedure in mid-November 2026. The service plan describes a shedding stage at 2-4 weeks, which here means early to mid-December 2026. This is a normal stage in which the transplanted hairs shed while the follicles stay in place. It happens to coincide with the 30 November and 1 December public holidays and with the long Christmas break on 25-26 December, which are all non-working days in Romania. If you plan time off for the first days of healing, those holidays can reduce the number of working days you need to arrange.

The first growth appears at 3-4 months, so in this example from about mid-February to mid-March 2027. Density shows at 6-9 months, meaning roughly mid-May to mid-August 2027, and in that window the main volume and contour become visible. The result is final at 12-18 months, which here means mid-November 2027 to mid-May 2028. Holidays can be useful markers. Orthodox Easter Sunday falls on 2 May 2027, and the Easter weekend runs from Friday to Monday. Pentecost and 1 June are also non-working days. These dates are simply handy anchors for remembering where you are in the timeline.

The follow-up schedule is built into the programme: visits at 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months, with progress tracked by photo through your personal coordinator. Because the consultation is online, the follow-ups can be arranged around your own calendar. Photos taken in similar light, at a similar distance and with the same hair length make comparison much easier, and the coordinator will explain how to take them. Keep in mind that the stages are ranges, and individual progress varies. If your scalp is slower than the example, that is not a cause for alarm. Send a photo and ask.

Insurance, co-payments and what to ask before you plan

Questions about coverage come up often, so here is what can be said about Romania in general. Health insurance in the country is administered by CNAS, the national health insurance authority, which manages the social insurance system and a basic package of medical services, medicines, sanitary materials and medical devices. Free procedures in the public system require a health card showing paid insurance. EU citizens and uninsured Romanians receive free emergency care. Hair restoration for cosmetic reasons is a different matter, and we found no official figure on coverage of cosmetic procedures or on waiting lists. We therefore do not claim that any fund will pay for it.

Two other facts give useful context. Since April 2019, insured people may pay the difference between private-provider tariffs and the fund's fees. CNAS has also begun to introduce co-payments for some services that are not strictly medically necessary. The health system is described as hospital-centric, with a shortage of healthcare workers. A comparable example is bariatric surgery: CNAS does not fully reimburse it, in state or private hospitals alike, although some pre- and postoperative services, such as endoscopy, can be free with a referral from a family doctor. The lesson for a hair transplant is to ask your insurer or family doctor before you assume anything, and to ask in writing if you can.

On the service side, the price is not guessed. It is set at the free consultation, after the grafts are counted, and fixed in the contract. The programme includes dressings and healing checks, a care plan for the transplanted and donor areas, advice on washing, sleep and headwear, and a plan for returning to sport. There are no extra payments on the day of the procedure. Instalments are available, which is worth raising with your coordinator if you plan around a household budget rather than a lump sum. The honest approach is to settle the documentation questions first and then pick the date.

Preparing for the consultation from a city of this size

Constanta has 263,688 residents within city limits according to the 2021 census, and a metro area of 425,916 in 2011, about 61% of the county's population. It is the fourth-largest city in Romania and the capital of Constanta County, in Northern Dobruja. That is a big enough city that people have busy schedules, shift work in the port and university timetables, and it helps that the first consultation is fully online. The port alone covers 39.26 km2 and stretches about 30 km, which tells you something about the working rhythms that shape many weeks in the city. If your work is irregular, the 24/7 coordinators let you send photos at the end of a shift instead of fitting in a call during the day.

For the consultation itself, a few practical steps help the doctor give a precise answer. Take clear photos of the front, the temples, the crown and the back of the head in even daylight. Wet hair hides density, so take them dry. Mention how long hair has been thinning, any family history and any health conditions. The service lists conditions that rule out a transplant, among them cancer, diabetes mellitus, epilepsy, serious heart conditions, a pacemaker, HIV/AIDS, hepatitis B or C, pulmonary embolism, and being under 18. A transplant also does not suit everyone, and sometimes your case may be solvable without surgery. The doctor will say so at the consultation, and you will not waste money.

The city has a university community too. Ovidius University of Constanta, founded in 1961, has about 15,000 students and 16 faculties, including Medicine and Pharmacy. For students and young adults noticing early thinning, an early consultation is a way to find out whether androgenetic alopecia is the cause, which the doctor can assess from photos. You can start with a message on WhatsApp or Telegram, and the coordinator replies within 15 minutes.

Which months in Constanta are the most comfortable for the first ten days of healing?

There is no single ideal month, and the doctor will advise you individually. The first ten days are the stage when crusts fall away and swelling subsides, so the main aim is to protect the scalp. In Constanta the July and August mean high is 27.9 °C with about 331 hours of sunshine in July, which asks for shade and a loose head covering. January has a mean high of 4.7 °C and a mean low of -1.2 °C, so you would need a soft, clean hat outdoors. Spring and autumn sit between these extremes, though May and October are the wettest months. Choose the season you can manage best.

Does the humid coastal air affect the healing of grafts?

Annual relative humidity in Constanta averages 82%, with 88% in December and 76% in July. Damp air does not stop grafts from taking, but it can make hats and caps feel clammy. Anything worn on the head during early healing should be clean, soft and loose, and it should be changed when damp. The coordinator provides advice on washing, sleep and headwear as part of the care plan, so follow that rather than general guesses.

Can I go to the beach in Mamaia during recovery?

The beach season in Mamaia runs from mid-June to early September, and the temptation is obvious. Sun, hot sand and salt water are all things to keep away from the transplanted area while it is healing. The programme includes a plan for returning to sport and hair care, and the doctor will tell you when each activity is suitable. Ask for the dates before booking a summer holiday, not after.

If I have the procedure in November 2026, when will I see the results?

Using the stages from the plan, and assuming a procedure in mid-November 2026, shedding of the transplanted hairs is a normal stage at 2-4 weeks, which means December 2026. First growth appears at 3-4 months, around mid-February to mid-March 2027. Density shows at 6-9 months, between mid-May and mid-August 2027. The final result comes at 12-18 months, from mid-November 2027 to mid-May 2028. These are ranges, and individual progress differs.

Do Romanian public holidays matter when I plan the recovery?

They can be useful. Romania has 15 non-working days, including 30 November, 1 December, 25-26 December, 1-2 January and 24 January. Orthodox Easter falls on 2 May 2027, with the weekend from Friday to Monday off. If you plan your first healing days around these dates, you may need fewer working days off. The coordinator is available round the clock, including on holidays, so questions do not have to wait.

Will Romanian health insurance cover a hair transplant?

We found no official figure on coverage of cosmetic procedures, so we make no promise. Romanian insurance is run by CNAS, and free procedures require a health card showing paid insurance. CNAS has also begun introducing co-payments for some services that are not strictly medically necessary. Ask your insurer or family doctor directly, ideally in writing, before assuming anything. The price from the consultation is fixed in the contract regardless.

What photos should I prepare if I work irregular shifts in a port city?

Send clear photos of the front, the temples, the crown and the back of the head, taken dry and in even daylight. Add a note on how long the thinning has lasted and on any health conditions. Because coordinators reply on WhatsApp and Telegram round the clock, you can send them after a shift, and the first reply arrives within 15 minutes. The doctor then assesses your donor area and counts the grafts you personally need.

How do cold snaps and snow affect a recovering scalp?

Constanta has about 22 snowy days a year, mostly in January and February, and the record low is -25.0 °C. A cold day is not a medical problem for grafts, but the treated area should not be rubbed or pressed. A soft, clean, loose hat is usually the practical option outdoors, and the care plan gives specific instructions on headwear. If you are unsure about a particular day, message your coordinator.
