We take grafts from the donor area at the back of the head and move them through micro-punctures of about 1 mm — no scars remain. I am sharing my experience, because before the operation I went through a pile of reviews myself and was looking for real stories. I had a beard transplant six months ago. Honestly, in the first days after the procedure I felt a little jittery: my face looked unfamiliar, there was slight swelling and small scabs. In the first couple of months the hair partly fell out, as the doctor had warned. But now the result truly makes me very happy) From about the 4th month active, even growth began. The transplanted hair took very well, the beard now looks as natural as possible, no bald patches are left. The beard became much thicker and denser, with the shape I had thought about for a long time. All in all, I recommend the clinic, the doctor was polite and explained everything 👍 The result is definitely worth it!

What gets asked

We share what people
ask before booking

People often say hair implants, but no artificial hair is used. In a hair transplant the doctor moves your own follicles (grafts) from the donor area to thinning or bald areas using FUE or DHI.

City Medical Centre doctors

Yes. Patients whose address is in a different country are routine for the practice, and you may consult a doctor online first.

Prices start at $2,200 (≈ €2,000) for FUE, $2,500 (≈ €2,250) for DHI, and $2,700 (≈ €2,450) for the combined method. Your final price is set after a free graft count and locked into the contract.

The surgery takes a single day, and you go home the same day.

It helps with stable pattern hair loss and a receding hairline when there are enough donor grafts. Some types of alopecia need treatment first; the doctor checks this at the consultation.

No, there is no pain, because anaesthesia is given locally.

FUE means tweezer-based, incision-free graft harvesting. DHI means channel-free implantation with a Choi pen. Combined DHI+FUE uses FUE for harvesting and the DHI pen for implanting.

A doctor settles the amount at a consultation you do not pay for, judging by the donor area available.

Healing is done within 0–10 days. The shed at 2–4 weeks is expected, not a failure. Hair grows from 3–4 months, looks thick around 6–9 months, with the end result appearing at 12–18 months.

Your procedure includes a lifetime hair-growth guarantee under contract.

Thinning hair in Bochum and the way out of it

A patient in Bochum gets a procedure that keeps things simple. FUE and DHI are performed with no cutting and no suturing, under local anaesthesia, and the operation is wrapped up in the course of one day.

Getting an opinion costs a patient from Bochum nothing: the consultation is online and free, the doctor sees photos of the thinning area and counts the grafts. The clinic answers 24/7, and replies come inside that window.

After the operation: 0-10 days to heal, 2-4 weeks until the transplanted hairs shed, which is a normal phase, 3-4 months to the start of growth, 6-9 to real density and 12-18 to the final result. Check-ups at 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months, photos with a personal coordinator, lifetime growth guarantee.

Bochum's weather and a healing scalp

Bochum sits at roughly 100 m above sea level on the flat-hilly Bochumer Landrücken, with the Ruhr to the south and the Emscher to the north. At this elevation the weather is mild and changeable rather than extreme. The mean daily maximum is 24.7 °C in July and 5.6 °C in January. The mean daily minimum is 1.2 °C in January and 14.6 °C in July. That is a narrow range compared with continental climates, and for a scalp after a hair transplant it means the main task is protecting the skin from rain, damp, cold and the occasional bright summer day, not from heat or deep frost.

The year-round mean relative humidity is 77.7%, and there are 195 rainy days in a year. Humidity matters because the first days after the procedure are the crust stage. The treatment plan gives the first ten days, 0-10 days, as the period when crusts fall away, the swelling subsides and the area slowly recovers. During this window the recipient area should be treated gently and not exposed to rubbing, wet headwear or anything that makes you sweat. A damp autumn day is not a problem in itself. A cap that stays wet on the head, or a hood pulled tight over the grafts, is the real concern. The coordinator explains the washing routine, the choice of headwear and the sleep position, and for a patient in Bochum we simply adapt that advice to a wet, mild climate.

Sunshine is also uneven through the year. The annual average is 4.2 hours a day, but it reaches 7.0 hours a day in July, 6.2 hours in June and August, and drops to only 1.3 hours in December and 1.5 hours in January. For the skin of the transplanted area, the bright months are the ones that call for planning. The young hairs are still growing, and the skin of the scalp, especially where the hair is thin, can be exposed. In deep winter there is very little sun, but there is wind, cold and rain, so the headwear question changes from "shade" to "dry and soft".

None of this should put you off. The doctor will assess your own case during the free online consultation, from the photos you send on WhatsApp or Telegram. The weather is simply one of the practical variables that the personal coordinator takes into account when choosing a date.

The doctor first decides whether a transplant suits you at all. According to the conditions listed for the procedure, it helps in androgenetic or diffuse alopecia, bald patches and a receding frontal edge of the hair, the effects of an injury or burn, and a high hair margin. It is not offered to patients under 18 or in cases such as trichotillomania, body dysmorphic disorder, cancer, epilepsy, serious heart conditions, diabetes mellitus, a pacemaker, AIDS/HIV, hepatitis B/C, pulmonary embolism or patchy alopecia. If your case can be solved without surgery, the doctor says so at the consultation.

A growth calendar built around the Ruhr year

A transplant is a procedure with a long timeline. The surgery itself takes one day at the clinic, under local anaesthesia, but the result matures over 12-18 months. The sensible way to choose a date is to place the stages of regrowth against the real calendar of the Ruhr region. Here is a worked example, using a procedure in mid-November 2026.

In the first 0-10 days the crusts fall away and the swelling subsides. For a mid-November procedure that is the end of November and the very start of December. The rain is at its peak then: December is the wettest month at 93 mm, November has 87 mm and January 88 mm. It is also the period when sunshine is at its lowest, only 1.3 hours a day in December. So the crust stage happens in a time of low sun and high moisture. That is manageable, because the scalp is not exposed to strong light, but you will want soft, clean headwear that can be changed and dried. Many patients also like the idea that the visible phase happens in the season when a hat or beanie looks completely ordinary.

From about 2 to 4 weeks the transplanted hairs shed. The description is clear that this is a normal stage: only the hairs fall out, the follicles stay in place. In our example this lands in December 2026 and early January 2027. The Christmas market in the downtown area runs through December, so if you have social plans, the shedding phase is the one to think about. It is not visible to everyone, but it is the least photogenic part of the process, and it is wise to know in advance that it is expected and not a sign that something has failed.

Between 3 and 4 months the first growth appears, which means roughly February and March 2027. From 6 to 9 months the density shows, and the main volume and contour become visible: that is May to August 2027. This is exactly when Bochum has its brightest light, with a July mean maximum of 24.7 °C and 7.0 hours of sunshine a day. Around the first weekend of July, the free open-air festival Bochum Total begins its run. By then the hair is at the stage where it is thickening, but it has not yet reached its final form. Final density and natural frontal edge of the hair come at 12-18 months, which for this example means November 2027 to May 2028.

The same exercise can be done for any date. A spring procedure puts the crust stage in the driest month, April at 43 mm, but moves the shedding phase into the first warm weeks and the first growth into the sunniest part of the year. An autumn or winter procedure, as above, hides the crust and shedding stages under cold-weather headwear and lets the thickening phase fall in the following summer. Neither is automatically better. What matters is that you decide with a calendar in front of you, not on the day.

Your coordinator will plan follow-up visits at 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months after the operation, and these are tracked by photo. That fits well with an online format: you send pictures from home on the agreed dates, and the doctor compares them with the plan.

Hats, wind and rain during recovery

Headwear is a practical topic here, because the service includes advice on washing your hair, on sleep and on headwear. The climate shapes which advice matters most.

During the first stage, when the crusts are present, anything that rubs the grafted area, or that gets wet and stays wet, is a nuisance. Bochum's year is moist, with 195 rainy days and 866 mm of precipitation a year. This is not heavy tropical rain but frequent, light and persistent wet weather. For the crust stage the useful principle is that an umbrella or a loose, clean, breathable cover is better than a tight cap. The doctor and coordinator give exact instructions for your case, and they depend on the method used, whether FUE, DHI or the combined DHI+FUE protocol, and on which area was treated.

Wind is a modest factor at this elevation, but the Bochumer Landrücken is open, and a gusty autumn day will push rain sideways. A hood that is pulled tight can press on the recipient area, so a loose one, or an umbrella, is the gentler choice during the early period.

In the cold months, with a January mean maximum of 5.6 °C and a mean minimum of 1.2 °C, warmth is not usually a problem for the grafts themselves, but you should still follow the instructions on what to wear. Night frost is uncommon at these averages, and the temperature seldom falls far below freezing in the data provided, but the cold air and damp wind can make an unprotected scalp uncomfortable. A soft, clean, loose cover keeps you comfortable.

In the bright months the question reverses. The July mean of 7.0 hours of sunshine per day means the strong light is more of an issue than the temperature. As the hair thickens during months 6 to 9, the scalp skin may still show through, and a light cap or hat in sunny weather is a sensible habit. Your coordinator will tell you when it is fine to return to sport and when to resume the normal hair-care routine, which is part of the care plan.

One more consideration is the donor area, at the back of the head or the temples. It also heals, and the same wet-and-rubbing logic applies. FUE is described as having no incisions and no stitches, which makes the donor zone simpler to look after, but it is still a wound surface for the first days.

Insurance rules and what they mean for planning

In Germany, statutory health insurance, which covers about 92% of the population, does not pay for cosmetic procedures done at the patient's request. A hair transplant for cosmetic reasons falls under this rule, so the patient carries the whole cost of the procedure, and that includes lost income. This is not a surprise to most patients, but it affects planning, and it is worth being clear about it before you book.

There is a second, less obvious point. After a medically non-indicated procedure, insured persons must share in the costs of any resulting complications, including sick pay. Insurers may restrict or refuse benefits under § 52 SGB V, and there is no entitlement to continued wage payment in that case. In practice this means you should not plan to take sick leave for a transplant and expect your employer or insurer to cover it. It is better to schedule the day of the procedure and the first days of recovery on days off, or to arrange time with your employer in advance.

Because the procedure takes one day at the clinic, with local anaesthesia, and the visible stage lasts about ten days, the practical question is how to fit that into your working life. Our coordinators are reachable around the clock, 24/7, on WhatsApp and Telegram, and they can help you to think through the calendar. They will assist with papers and visits as well. The cost of the procedure is set at the free consultation after the grafts are counted, and it is fixed in the medical services contract, so there are no surprises on the day of surgery. The online consultation itself is free and does not require you to book an operation.

If you have private insurance, which covers about 11% of the working population, the same logic generally applies to a cosmetic procedure, but the exact terms depend on the policy. We cannot give you a ruling on your specific contract, so it is worth reading the terms or asking your insurer directly before you decide.

A city of students, shifts and planned weekends

Bochum is a city of 358,880 people, in the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan area of more than five million inhabitants. The Ruhr-Universität Bochum alone has 37,653 students, and the city has nine universities or branches of universities. That is a lot of young adults, and in a young adult population hair loss is a common concern, since androgenetic alopecia often begins early. The minimum age for the procedure is 18, and the doctor will also consider how stable the loss pattern is, because a very young patient may still be changing. The consultation is the place to discuss this honestly.

For students and for people who work shifts, the format is convenient. The first consultation is online: you send photos on WhatsApp or Telegram, get a free assessment, and receive the number of grafts and the cost, fixed in the contract. There is no need to give up lecture time or a shift to find out where you stand. The reply comes within 15 minutes, and the coordinator is available around the clock.

The semester calendar can be a useful guide for timing. A student could plan the procedure at the start of a break, so that the 0-10 day healing period falls in a quieter time. The shedding stage, from 2 to 4 weeks, and the first growth, from 3 to 4 months, would then fall in the next term. The difference is small, but it is a real planning tool.

For those who work, the Bochum Total festival on the first weekend of July and the Christmas market through December are examples of dates when many people have social plans. If you want your hair to be at a particular stage for an event, count backward: the main volume and contour are visible at 6-9 months, and the final result arrives at 12-18 months. A transplant in early 2027, for instance, would be at the thickening stage by the autumn of 2027, and at or near its final form by the spring or summer of 2028.

The coordinator keeps track of progress by photo at each follow-up, so you can see your own timeline in your phone's gallery. The doctor who will operate speaks with you at the consultation, and the plan, the method and the number of grafts are agreed before anything is booked.

Questions about timing, weather and coverage in Bochum

The questions below deal with the points that come up most often for patients in Bochum and the Ruhr region.

Is November a good month for a hair transplant if I live in Bochum?

It can be. The wettest months are December at 93 mm and November at 87 mm, and sunshine is low, only 1.3 hours a day in December. That means the crust stage, 0-10 days, passes in weak light, which is easy on the skin, and soft headwear looks normal in the cold season. The shedding stage then falls in December and January, the first growth in February and March, and the thickening phase in the bright summer. The doctor and coordinator will check whether it fits your own schedule and case.

Does the damp Ruhr climate affect how the grafts heal?

The annual mean relative humidity is 77.7%, with 195 rainy days a year, so wet weather is part of normal life. It does not stop the healing, but it makes the headwear and washing instructions important in the first days. You should avoid a cap or hood that stays wet or presses on the recipient area. The coordinator gives precise instructions for your method and your area, and you can message them at any hour.

How should I protect the scalp in the sunny months?

July is the sunniest month, with an average of 7.0 hours a day, and June and August have 6.2 hours. While the new hair is still thickening, in months 6 to 9, a light cap or hat on bright days is a sensible habit, and the doctor will tell you what to use and when. Ask about sun protection at the consultation, because it depends on the area treated and on how your skin reacts.

Will my statutory health insurance pay for a hair transplant?

In general no. In Germany statutory health insurance does not pay for cosmetic procedures done at the patient's request, and the patient bears the whole cost, including lost income. If you are privately insured, the terms depend on your policy, so it is worth asking your insurer directly. The cost of the procedure is quoted at the free consultation and fixed in the contract.

Can I get sick pay if I need time off after the procedure?

Do not count on it. After a medically non-indicated procedure, insurers may restrict or refuse benefits under § 52 SGB V, and there is no entitlement to continued wage payment in that case. It is safer to arrange the day of the procedure and the first days of recovery as days off or holiday. The procedure takes one day at the clinic, and the visible healing stage is about ten days.

I am a student at one of the universities in Bochum. When should I plan the procedure?

A semester break is a natural choice, because the first days of healing then fall in a quieter period. After that, the shedding stage at 2-4 weeks and the first growth at 3-4 months will fall in the next term, and the follow-up visits at 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months are done by photo from home. You must be 18 or older. The coordinator can help you to count the months against your own calendar.

How do I time the result for a summer event, like the first weekend of July?

Count backward from the date. The first growth appears at 3-4 months, the main volume and contour show at 6-9 months, and the final density comes at 12-18 months. A procedure in mid-November 2026 would reach the thickening phase by May to August 2027, so the first weekend of July 2027 would fall inside that window, but the hair would not yet be at its final form. If you want the finished result, plan for a later event.

What do I need to send for the free online consultation?

Send photos of the scalp, including the donor area at the back of the head, on WhatsApp or Telegram. The doctor looks at the donor area, counts the grafts and says what result is achievable in your case. You get an answer within 15 minutes of messaging, and no operation needs to be booked. The final cost is named by the doctor and fixed in the contract.
