FAQ
Rhinoplasty (nose job) — among the most delicate and widely requested plastic surgeries, designed to reshape the nose to match the individual proportions of the nose and the whole face. Modern rhinoplasty goes beyond changing how the nose looks — it is complex surgical work aimed at an aesthetic result without putting health at risk.
Yes. Nose job is the everyday name for rhinoplasty, plastic surgery of the nose. The surgeon can change its shape and, with rhinoseptoplasty, also correct a deviated septum to make breathing easier.

Optimal age: 18 to 45. The nose is fully formed by this time, and tissues still heal well. Where medically indicated, surgery can be performed at an older age if your general health allows
At its core, rhinoplasty is a comprehensive solution. It corrects both congenital and acquired nasal deformities, for example after a nasal injury. Patients are often bothered by a dorsal hump or an overly wide nose. Nose correction can also target the tip (tip rhinoplasty) or the nostrils (alar rhinoplasty). The surgical plan is created individually for each patient, taking every feature of their nose into account.
Rhinoplasty is performed under general anaesthesia and, depending on complexity, takes 1.5 to 3 hours.
The surgeon determines the extent and course of the surgery at the consultation, based on your goals and the anatomy of your nose.
Rhinoplasty — surgery to change the appearance of the nose (an aesthetic goal) and improve its function if breathing is impaired.
Septoplasty — a septum-correcting surgery that restores normal breathing and does not change the outer contour of the nose.
Often both surgeries are combined, especially when a patient has a deviated septum and aesthetic concerns. This gives a harmonious look and restores full breathing. At City Medical Centre we perform rhinoseptoplasty — a combined surgery that solves both tasks at once
For a successful operation, preparation should begin 21 days before rhinoplasty. At the first appointment our plastic surgeon will give you a list of the required tests.

You prepare with plastic surgeon consultations, lab tests (CBC, biochemistry, coagulation, infection tests), an ECG, a chest X-ray and an X-ray or CT of the nose. Stop anticoagulants, alcohol and smoking a week before surgery. Eat lightly the day before and fast 6 hours before surgery
Although nose surgery is one of the most popular and well-established aesthetic operations, like any surgery it carries certain risks. To minimise the likelihood of complications after rhinoplasty, our clinic provides thorough pre-operative preparation and post-operative monitoring.
Important: if after rhinoplasty you have difficulty breathing, severe pain, a high temperature or a change in the shape of your nose, contact your doctor immediately.
Rhinoplasty at City Medical Centre is performed with modern technology, safe materials and constant medical supervision, which keeps the risk of complications to a minimum.
We also provide post-operative monitoring and prescribe recovery therapy.
Recovery after nose surgery is just as important as the operation itself. Proper recovery determines how aesthetic and harmonious the final result will be. At City Medical Centre recovery is closely monitored and divided into three phases: early, intermediate and late
You'll see first improvements after the swelling eases (2–3 weeks), while the final rhinoplasty result is evaluated in 1–1.5 years, when tissues have fully stabilised
The nose needs to be protected after surgery. An aluminium cast is placed over the nose, with special silicone splints inside the nasal cavity. Nasal function is limited in the first days but recovers quickly. The final result of rhinoplasty can be assessed after 1–1.5 years, once the swelling has fully subsided.
Important: if nasal function is impaired after the first operation or you are not satisfied with the result, revision (secondary) rhinoplasty may be needed. It is a more complex procedure, performed no earlier than one year after the primary operation.
In the first days after surgery the nasal passages may be partly blocked by splints or swelling. Full breathing usually returns within 1–2 weeks, depending on the extent of surgery and your body
Our doctors use microsurgical techniques and quality sutures to keep scars minimal
Rhinoplasty makes the face more harmonious and improves its aesthetics, without losing what makes you individual. Using 3D modelling, you see the expected result in advance and agree on changes with the surgeon
Rhinoplasty is a serious step. A well-performed rhinoplasty means the new nose is in perfect harmony with your facial features and works flawlessly. At the consultation the nasal surgeon assesses every parameter in detail: the size of the nose, tip projection, and the condition of the septum and nasal mucosa. We use 3D modelling so you can see the future proportions of your nose before the surgery is performed.
Don't just browse rhinoplasty photos online. Book a consultation to discuss what modern rhinoplasty can and cannot do for you. Correcting external nasal deformities and reshaping the nose is our speciality.
The cost depends on the extent of surgery and is set at the consultation: the doctor names the exact price after examining your nose and facial proportions.

There are two main approaches. Closed rhinoplasty is done through incisions inside the nose and leaves no visible scars. Open rhinoplasty uses a small incision on the columella, the tissue between the nostrils, giving the surgeon a full view of all structures. For Espoo patients, the choice depends on goals: complex reshaping of the bones and bridge often calls for the open approach.
The surgical plan is made at the first meeting: the surgeon examines the septum and breathing, builds a 3D or 4D model and agrees on the changes with you. Preparation with tests, a CT scan and specialist consultations follows. After the operation, a recovery course is prescribed. If you are planning rhinoplasty in Espoo, allow for one month without sport, alcohol or smoking.
The consultation costs nothing and gives a realistic forecast: facial proportions are assessed, a 3D model of the future nose is shown and a personal surgery and recovery plan is drawn up. After that, the fee for rhinoplasty is $4,200 (≈ €3,750) with inpatient care, dressings and follow-ups included. Patients from Espoo can book via the form or message us in any messenger.

For a long time I was self-conscious about the length of my nose, until a friend who had had rhinoplasty recommended this clinic. At the very first consultation they set the date of surgery and explained every stage in detail. The rhinoplasty under general anaesthesia was performed by Mareta Meirieva: the swelling went down quickly, and after just a week my nose looked natural and neat. Modern equipment, attentive staff and appointments without delays made the whole process comfortable. I recommend the clinic to anyone who values professionalism and a quality result.

This was my first visit to the clinic, for rhinoseptoplasty, and to be honest I was very nervous. At the consultation they explained every stage of the operation and recovery in detail, which calmed me down straight away. The operation was performed by Mareta Meirieva: the swelling started to go down on the third day, and the result is visible to the naked eye. Everything inside is sterile and pleasant, the atmosphere inspires trust, and the staff are always responsive. I thank the clinic for the high level of service and the warm approach!

Everything was first-class: clean, cosy and calm. Booking and choosing the right date was easy. The nose operation went smoothly and the nerve block was done perfectly: now I breathe freely without nasal drops! It is a real lifesaver for anyone tired of endless prescriptions and ineffective procedures. I recommend it to everyone who values professionalism and results.

I recently had rhinoplasty and I am absolutely delighted. At the consultation they told me about every stage in detail, so I went into surgery fully prepared. The operation went smoothly: they straightened the bridge of my nose and made the nostrils symmetrical, and the shape came out very neat. The swelling lasted a little longer than I expected, but they explained straight away that full recovery takes more time. No unpleasant surprises, everything was within the normal range. I recommend the clinic to anyone looking for a confident result and an attentive attitude.

A nose is judged by how it looks in photographs, but it works around the clock, and in a northern climate it is tested every day. Espoo sits on the northern shore of the Gulf of Finland and has a humid continental climate. The mean daily maximum in January is -2.3 °C and the minimum -6.5 °C, and February is almost identical. In July the mean maximum is 21.5 °C and the minimum 14.0 °C. A nose here handles very cold air for months, then mild and damp summer air. If you already breathe poorly through one or both nostrils, that swing is something you notice.
This is why the breathing part of rhinoplasty deserves as much attention as the shape. Primary rhinoplasty is described as an operation that adjusts appearance and also improves breathing when airflow is restricted. If the septum is deviated, the combined operation, rhinoseptoplasty, corrects the septum and changes the outer shape in one go. Patients who live with a blocked side often say they stopped noticing the problem long ago, so the first consultation usually includes simple questions. Which side closes at night? Does it worsen when you come in from the cold? Does it change between seasons? The doctor will ask these during the consultation, and your answers help decide whether the plan should be purely aesthetic or should include the septum.
Precipitation in Espoo is about 659.8 mm a year. August is the wettest month at 74.3 mm, followed by July at 72.4 mm and June at 63.3 mm. April is the driest at 33.6 mm, with March close behind at 35.6 mm. For someone with a sensitive nose this matters mostly as a pattern to describe, not a number to fear. Tell the coordinator in your first message whether your symptoms flare in damp late summer, in the cold months or in spring. Do the same with any history of seasonal allergy. Inflammation of the ears, throat, nose or eyes is on the list of reasons rhinoplasty cannot go ahead at that moment, so an active infection or flare-up has to be settled before a date is fixed. That is another reason to describe your usual year honestly.
Photos are enough to start. Send clear pictures of your nose from the front, both sides and slightly from below by WhatsApp or Telegram. The doctor will look at the shape and tell you whether the consultation is likely to lead to an aesthetic plan, a septum plan or a combined one. At the consultation, a 3D model of the future result is made and the course of the operation is explained. The consultation is free and does not commit you to surgery.
Espoo has an unusual rhythm of light. Day length is about 19 hours at midsummer and only about 6 hours at midwinter, and sunshine is scarce from November to January. This affects the planning of a nose operation in two practical ways.
The first is glasses. The bridge of the nose is exactly where a frame rests, and after rhinoplasty that area is the one under the most care. Many people in Espoo wear glasses all day, and sunglasses on bright days, especially in spring when snow still reflects light. The materials for this service do not give a number of days or weeks for wearing glasses, and we will not invent one. Ask the doctor at the consultation how your own plan treats the bridge, and what to use in the meantime if you cannot go without correction. Some people switch to contact lenses for the period the doctor specifies. Others choose a frame that sits lighter or rests on a different point. Bring up the subject early, because it affects how you organise the weeks after the operation.
The second is sun. The nose is the highest point of the face and catches the most light. In the dark months from November to January there is little sunshine, which some patients find a comfortable time to be less visible. In the bright part of the year, protection from strong light and from the glare off water becomes a real question. Espoo has about 58 km of shoreline and about 165 islands in front of it, and it is full of places where people sit outdoors in summer. Your doctor will say when and how to expose a healing nose to sun, and you should follow that and not general internet advice.
A short example: you send photos in the first half of November 2026, have the online consultation, and settle on a date in January 2027. The days are short and the sun is low, so there is no pressure to be outdoors much. By late March to early April the snow usually melts, and the light grows stronger just as you are further along in your recovery. Planning in this order is a choice you can make with the coordinator. It gives you a quiet winter for the early weeks and a more visible face by the time spring light returns.
People tend to plan rhinoplasty around dates when they do not want to be seen, or dates when they want to look rested. Finland's public holiday calendar makes this easier to think about. The holidays include 1 January, 6 January, Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Monday, 1 May, Ascension, Pentecost, Midsummer Day, All Saints' Day, 6 December Independence Day, and 25 and 26 December. Midsummer Eve and Christmas Eve are generally not working days either. Midsummer Day always falls on a Saturday between 20 and 26 June.
For some patients, a long holiday period is a good frame for the quiet first days. For others it is the opposite, because family gatherings put you in front of many people. In Espoo, Independence Day on 6 December, Christmas and New Year come quickly one after another, and an operation scheduled just before them leaves little margin. The honest approach is to count backwards from the date you want your face to be ready. Easter 2027 falls in late March, with Good Friday on 26 March and Easter Sunday on 28 March, and Midsummer Day 2027 is Saturday 26 June. If a wedding, graduation or family photograph sits on one of those dates, tell the coordinator, who can help lay out the stages around it.
Local life offers other dates. Espoo Day is held on the last Saturday of August, and it has been held every year since 1992. Espoo Metro Areena is due to host the FIBA Women's EuroBasket in 2027, and there are sports parks in Tapiola and Leppavaara. Students at Aalto University, whose main campus is in Otaniemi and which has about 16,000 students, plan their lives around terms and exam periods. Anyone studying or working there may want the early weeks to fall in a quiet part of the term. None of this changes the medical plan, but it affects what is a comfortable moment to be less visible.
The medical stages stay the same whatever the calendar says. The operation takes 1.5 to 3 hours under general anaesthesia, and you spend one day at the clinic. Check-ups follow at 7 days, 3 months and 6 months, and consultations with the doctor remain free for a year. The first check at 7 days is the one that most depends on your calendar, so do not book a long commitment in that week without asking whether it fits.
After rhinoplasty the nose is protected with a splint, and swelling is part of recovery. The materials for this service do not give a day-by-day swelling timeline, so I will not give you one. What can be said is how to plan around the stages that are named.
Once the operation is over you stay one day at the clinic. You receive a recovery programme and a coordinator keeps in touch through the recovery period, answers questions and books your follow-up visits. The clinic also lets you choose the colour of your nasal splint: purple, gold, green, light blue, pink, yellow, raspberry or carbon. This sounds like a small touch, but for someone who is going to be seen by family or colleagues, it can make the first days feel less clinical. Choose it at the planning stage, so it is settled before the operation.
Think about the days when a splint will be most visible. If you work in an office or study at a campus, you may be asked questions. Some people are happy to say what they have had done, and others prefer a short and neutral answer. Decide in advance which you prefer, because it is easier than improvising when a colleague asks. If your spouse or family members will help at home, tell them in advance what the doctor has said about sleeping position, washing and physical activity. These are details given to you after the operation, and it is better to listen to them together than to pass them on secondhand.
Winter in Espoo adds a few practical points. Snow usually first falls after Christmas, and the cold months run from January to March, with a mean minimum around -6.5 °C. Going out in strong cold with a healing nose is something to ask about directly. Ask the doctor what is sensible, how to cover the face, and whether to avoid long periods outdoors in the first weeks. Slippery pavements and ice are a reason to plan quiet days and avoid risky activity, because any knock to the nose during recovery is a problem. Sports such as ball games, swimming at the Leppavaara, Keski-Espoo, Espoonlahti or Tapiola pools, and the outdoor islands should wait until the doctor says they are fine, and you should ask for specifics at the follow-up visits.
Finally, the result is something you judge over months, not days. The 3D model made at the consultation is a forecast and not a promise of an exact outcome. Real extent of correction depends on your anatomy, and the doctor confirms it in the consultation.
Preparation begins about 21 days before the operation. At the first appointment the doctor gives you a list of required tests. The steps listed include a complete blood count, biochemistry, a coagulation panel, a chest X-ray and an X-ray of the sinuses. Some of these have a limited validity period, so the coordinator will explain when to take them, to avoid doing them too early and having to repeat. Blood clotting problems are among the contraindications, which is why the coagulation panel matters.
In Espoo you have access to public health services as a resident, organised by the municipality, and private care exists alongside. Where you take the tests is a practical choice. Many people use the healthcare provider they are already used to and then send the results to the coordinator, who checks they match the list. If something is missing or unclear, ask before you pay for a test twice.
The other contraindications are worth reading closely. These are infectious diseases, mental health disorders, cancer, age under 18, decompensated chronic diseases, skin damage in the area of the planned operation, and inflammation of the ears, throat, nose or eyes. The best age range is 18 to 45, though with medical indication it can be done later if general health allows. Honest answers at the consultation are what keep this safe. If you are unsure which group you fall into, send photos and a short description, and the doctor will tell you whether rhinoplasty suits you. If the operation is not needed in your case, the doctor will say so.
Weight is a related point that people sometimes avoid raising. Finnish health surveys show that obesity affects a substantial share of adults, around 30% of women and 27% of men according to the THL Terve Suomi 2023 report. This does not mean anyone is excluded. It means that general health, weight and any chronic conditions are part of the conversation, and the doctor will want an accurate picture. Revision cases are different again: a repeat correction is done no earlier than a year after the primary operation, and it needs a longer discussion of what was done before.
Many people in Finland assume that health costs are covered through the public system or through Kela, the national insurance institution. For cosmetic nose surgery, this assumption is usually wrong. Kela states that it does not pay sickness-care reimbursement for the costs of aesthetic treatment. Kela reimburses private care only when it is necessary treatment of illness, pregnancy or childbirth in line with accepted good practice, and it uses the Kaypa hoito recommendations and the range of health-care services when judging necessity. Its reimbursements are fixed euro amounts per visit and not a share of what you pay, so even where something is covered it is rarely a large part of the total.
In practice this means that you should plan on the basis that an aesthetic rhinoplasty is paid for by you. If your main complaint is breathing, such as a deviated septum that clearly limits airflow, the position is less simple. Whether any part of your care is considered necessary treatment is something that Kela or your own health provider decides, not the clinic. Ask them in writing, and keep what they send you. Do not assume a combined operation will be treated one way or the other.
Public services remain available to residents, and the most demanding care is given in five hospital districts, including Helsinki. If you have an ongoing breathing problem, it can be reasonable to see a public or occupational health doctor too. That gives you a second opinion on whether the septum needs treatment, independent of any plan you are making privately.
The price of the operation is named by the doctor after the free consultation and is fixed in the contract for medical services. The coordinators are reachable 24/7 on WhatsApp and Telegram, so questions about paperwork and what to ask your insurer or Kela can be raised at any hour. Keep the conversation factual, and decide only once you have the contract and your plan side by side.
Kela states that it does not pay sickness-care reimbursement for aesthetic treatment, so a nose operation done for appearance is normally not reimbursed. Kela reimburses private care only when it is necessary treatment of illness in line with accepted good practice, and its reimbursements are fixed euro amounts per visit and not a percentage of the cost. If your concern is mainly breathing, ask Kela or your health provider in writing how they would classify it, and tell the clinic coordinator what you were told.
Neither is better in every case, and the choice depends on your life. In winter the mean minimum reaches about -6.5 °C in January and sunshine is scarce from November to January, so there is little pressure to be outdoors, but you need to ask about cold air and icy pavements. In summer days are up to about 19 hours long and the face is more exposed to sun and social events, so planning around glare and gatherings matters more. Discuss your calendar with the coordinator and the doctor.
The bridge of the nose is where glasses rest, and it is the area that needs the most care after rhinoplasty. The materials for this service do not give a set number of days, so the answer has to come from the doctor during the consultation. Raise it early, and ask whether contact lenses or a lighter frame are suitable in your case and when you can return to your usual glasses.
Yes, it can be built into your timetable. Finland has a number of public holidays, including 6 December, 25 and 26 December and Midsummer Day, which falls on a Saturday between 20 and 26 June, and Midsummer Eve and Christmas Eve are generally not working days. Count back from the date you want to look your best, and remember the check-up at 7 days and the one-day stay at the clinic. The coordinator can lay out the stages against your calendar.
Espoo has about 659.8 mm of precipitation a year, with August the wettest month at 74.3 mm and April the driest at 33.6 mm. Whether a given month affects your nose depends on you, and the materials for this service do not link weather to results. What helps is telling the doctor when your symptoms get worse, and mentioning any seasonal allergy. Active inflammation of the nose, throat, ears or eyes would need to be dealt with before a date is fixed.
The listed tests include a complete blood count, biochemistry, a coagulation panel, a chest X-ray and an X-ray of the sinuses, and preparation begins about 21 days before the operation. As an Espoo resident you can use public services, which municipalities organise, or private care, and then send the results to your coordinator. Ask the coordinator which tests are needed and how recent they must be before booking them.
Not necessarily. If a deviated septum is the main issue, the combined operation, rhinoseptoplasty, is designed to correct the septum and the outer shape together, and the doctor can explain at the consultation what is needed in your case. If surgery is not needed, you will be told so. Send photos and describe your symptoms, and you will get a free assessment with no commitment to go ahead.
Revision rhinoplasty, which is a repeat correction after an unsuccessful or partly successful operation, is performed no earlier than a year after the primary one. It is carried out under general anaesthesia with one day at the clinic. If you are unhappy with an earlier result, send photos and a short history, and the doctor will tell you at the consultation what is realistic.
