FAQ
Yes, bariatric surgery is the medical term for it. At City Medical Centre the main methods are sleeve gastrectomy (gastric sleeve) and gastric bypass; the surgeon chooses the method by your BMI and health.
Usually a BMI over 40, or over 35 with related health conditions. The surgeon confirms whether surgery suits you at the consultation.

Surgery is prescribed only when clear criteria are met
BMI is the primary tool for judging obesity. The formula: body weight (kg) divided by height squared (m²). Surgery is typically justified at a BMI above 40, or above 35 if there are serious related conditions. At times surgery is also considered with lower figures — provided non-surgical treatment has failed.
The two are often mistaken for each other, but their goals are fundamentally different. Bariatric surgery provides medical treatment for obesity and related diseases. Changing how the digestive tract works, it deals with the causes of excess weight and metabolism. Plastic surgery modifies the body's outer contours; it does not treat obesity or affect metabolism.
City Medical Centre provides four main types of bariatric surgery: sleeve gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, mini gastric bypass (MGB) and SADI-S duodeno-ileal bypass. We choose each method individually by BMI, related conditions and the patient's goals.
We rely on modern laparoscopic technique. The operation is performed through 4 small punctures of 5 to 15 mm. Cosmetic sutures are used, so after healing the marks are barely visible.
Recovery depends on what you plan to do. Office work: after 2–4 weeks. Physical work: after 1.5 months. Sport and activity: swimming after 30 days, other exercise phased in as weight drops. Travel and holidays: preferably not earlier than one month after surgery.
Stage by stage, you move from liquid food to soft and then solid. Priority goes to protein, and high-calorie, fatty food is limited.
After bariatric surgery pregnancy is possible, yet doctors recommend at least 12–18 months of waiting. Meanwhile the body stabilizes, weight arrives at target values and nutritional status normalizes.
Yes, after bariatric surgery vitamins are a must. The altered digestive anatomy reduces absorption of some nutrients, which makes regular vitamin and mineral supplements a permanent part of the patient's life.
Weight regain is possible after bariatric surgery but very unlikely provided you follow the doctor's advice. Eat properly, avoid high-calorie drinks and keep up regular follow-up with City Medical Centre specialists.

Sleeve gastrectomy turns most of the stomach into a narrow tube, reducing portion size and levels of ghrelin, the hunger hormone. It suits a BMI of 35 to 45, with patients losing on average 60–70% of excess weight. For anyone from Espoo with a higher BMI or type 2 diabetes, a bypass may fit better; the surgeon compares options at the consultation.
Several things are worth planning ahead. Pregnancy is advised no earlier than 12–18 months after surgery, once weight and nutritional status stabilise. Vitamins become a permanent part of life because the body absorbs some nutrients less well. Swimming waits 30 days, strength work longer. Patients from Espoo discuss these points with the surgeon well before the operation date.
Starting is simple. Leave your name and phone number or write in any messenger, and a coordinator will arrange a free consultation. In about 15 minutes the surgeon will say whether bariatric surgery is right for you and which method fits. For people from Espoo, this conversation is the fastest way to replace temporary fixes with a lasting solution.

The national health survey Terve Suomi 2023, produced by THL, reports that obesity, defined as a BMI of 30 or more, affects 30% of Finnish women and 27% of men. That is about 1.2 million adults. The same report shows how uneven the picture is across the country. Among men, the share by wellbeing services county runs from 17% to 30%, and among women from 20% to 28%. These figures are self-reported, so they describe how people see their own weight rather than clinic measurements. Even so, the spread tells an Espoo resident something useful: excess weight is a common, widely documented condition, not a private failing, and it is handled as a health matter.
Espoo is the second largest municipality in Finland. At the end of 2025 it had 325,716 residents, and it grew by 4,785 people, or 1.5%, during that year, mostly through migration. The city is also estimated to reach 380,000 residents in 2033. A population of this size and with this mix of ages is the setting in which these questions arise. About 61.1% of residents are aged 20-64, and 15.3% are over 65. For the working-age majority, the practical questions are usually about time away from work, how the change fits into a busy schedule, and how long the follow-up lasts.
A quarter of the city, 84,225 people or 25.9%, has a foreign language as a mother tongue. For some of them, information about weight treatment arrives in a second language, or through relatives, or from a different medical tradition. An online consultation helps here because it can be done in the language and at the pace you choose, with photos and messages on WhatsApp or Telegram, and coordinators answering round the clock. Nothing is booked until you have heard the doctor's assessment and agreed the plan and the dates.
It is worth being clear about what a consultation is. It is not a promise of an operation. The doctor looks at your weight, height and related conditions and tells you whether bariatric surgery is a reasonable option. As a general rule, surgery is justified at a BMI above 40, or above 35 when serious related conditions are present. Sometimes lower values are considered, but only when non-surgical methods have not worked. The BMI is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared. If you want to know where you stand, do that sum before you write to us.
The Finnish arrangement is layered. Public health services are available to everyone resident in the country. Municipalities are responsible for organising them, and private care exists alongside. The most demanding care is concentrated in five hospital districts, one of which is Helsinki. For an Espoo resident that means ordinary assessments sit with the municipal services, while complex treatment is organised at district level.
We do not quote waiting times for public bariatric treatment. They differ between providers and over time, and we have no reliable figure to give. If you are weighing public treatment against an online-planned operation, ask the public provider directly what the current queue and the entry criteria are, and compare that with the dates our coordinator can offer.
Private care is a different question, and here Kela matters. Kela reimburses private care only when it is necessary treatment of illness, pregnancy or childbirth, in line with accepted good practice. When it judges necessity, it relies on the Käypä hoito recommendations and the range of health-care services. Kela also states plainly that it does not pay sickness-care reimbursement for the costs of aesthetic treatment. That distinction matters for how you think about your own case. Bariatric surgery is a medical treatment of obesity and the illnesses linked to it. It changes how the digestive tract works and addresses the causes of excess weight and of metabolic problems. It is not a body-contouring procedure. Plastic surgery reshapes the outer lines of the body and neither treats obesity nor changes metabolism. Whether Kela would reimburse anything in your individual situation is for Kela to decide, so do not assume it.
Kela reimbursements for a private doctor's fee are fixed amounts per visit and not a share of what you pay. Even if some reimbursement applied, it would be a small, fixed part of a larger bill. For that reason we suggest you treat any reimbursement as a possible small extra and not as a basis for planning. If you have private health insurance, ask the insurer in writing whether obesity treatment, an online consultation and the stay in hospital fall within the policy, and whether any excess applies. Send the answer to your coordinator, who can then match the paperwork to what the insurer asks for.
The calendar in Finland is unusually strong, and it affects when a stay in hospital and a recovery fit most easily. The recovery times from the plan are these: a hospital stay of 1–5 days under observation, a return to office work after 2–4 weeks, a return to physical work after about 1.5 months, and the final result 18–24 months after surgery. Place those against the Finnish year.
Public holidays cluster in several periods: 1 and 6 January, Good Friday and Easter Monday, 1 May, Ascension, Pentecost, Midsummer Day, All Saints' Day, 6 December and the Christmas days. Midsummer Eve and Christmas Eve are generally not working days. A stay that begins just before a block of holidays can let you use those days for the first quiet week at home. It also means that laboratory appointments, the ECG, the ultrasound and the gastroscopy before the operation should be arranged early enough not to fall into a holiday gap. An example: if you want to be back at your desk after the first working week of January 2027, your coordinator can count backwards from that date, allowing 2–4 weeks for office work, and suggest a window in which the operation and the stay in hospital would fit.
Students and staff around Otaniemi may find the academic calendar easier to work with than the working year. Aalto University has its main campus in Otaniemi, Espoo, with about 16,000 students and 5,200 employees. Study demands rise and fall with teaching periods. A person with a flexible research schedule may have a freer recovery fortnight than someone tied to fixed shifts. This is only a point about planning. It does not alter the medical advice, which the doctor sets according to your health.
One more date for the diary: Espoo Day is held on the last Saturday of August and has been held every year since 1992. If you hope to join a city event or a long outdoor day, tell the coordinator in advance. The doctor will say whether the weeks after your operation are the right time for a full day on your feet. Exercise is added gradually as weight drops, and swimming is fine after 30 days.
Espoo has a great deal of ground on which to be active, which helps once the doctor allows more exercise. The city has about 58 km of shoreline on the northern shore of the Gulf of Finland, about 165 islands in front of the shore, and more than 100 lakes and ponds. Seventy-three of them are larger than one hectare. The largest is Lake Bodom, at 4.1 km², with an average depth of 4.3 m. Nuuksio National Park lies within Espoo's borders. The highest point, Velskola, is at 114.2 m above sea level, so the terrain is more rolling than steep.
The swimming facilities include the pools at Leppävaara, Keski-Espoo, Espoonlahti and Tapiola, as well as the Serena Waterpark and the outdoor islands. This matters because swimming is the first activity our plan allows, after 30 days. A pool is a controlled setting, with water of known temperature and a lifeguard nearby. It is a sensible starting point before you consider open water. Other exercise is added gradually as weight comes down. It is for the doctor, not the calendar, to say when you move on to jogging in the forest, a longer hike or a class.
Sport in the city also runs through large venues. The Tapiola and Leppävaara sports parks are among them, and Espoo Metro Areena will host the FIBA Women's EuroBasket in 2027. A neighbourhood with such facilities makes it easier to return to a routine of regular movement. We note them as options for the later stages. They are not tasks for the first weeks.
Weather deserves a practical word. Espoo has a humid continental climate. January has a mean maximum of -2.3 °C and a minimum of -6.5 °C, and February is similar at -2.2 °C and -6.9 °C. March is 1.6 °C and -4.8 °C. Snow usually first falls after Christmas and melts from late March to early April. Sunshine is scarce from November to January, and day length falls to about 6 hours at midwinter, against about 19 hours at midsummer. In July the mean daily maximum is 21.5 °C and the minimum 14.0 °C, and August brings 20.2 °C and 12.9 °C. The annual mean maximum is 8.9 °C and the minimum 3.0 °C.
What does that mean for recovery? In the first weeks after discharge, short, regular walks are easier to keep up on dry, cool days than on icy ones. If your recovery falls in winter, plan walking routes that are well cleared and well lit, and ask the doctor what pace is suitable. In the wettest months, August at 74.3 mm and July at 72.4 mm, a waterproof layer matters more than extra effort. The driest months are April at 33.6 mm and March at 35.6 mm, with annual precipitation of 659.8 mm.
The diet after bariatric surgery goes in stages, from liquid to soft to solid food. The emphasis is on protein and on limiting high-calorie, fatty food. High-calorie drinks should also be avoided, because they are one of the easiest ways for weight to creep back. Vitamins and mineral supplements are essential, because with the digestive anatomy changed the body absorbs certain nutrients less well. Those supplements become a lasting part of the patient's routine. Your doctor will give a precise plan, and it should always take precedence over anything general here.
We have no sourced facts about Finnish food culture to build on, so we do not claim to know how the typical Espoo table looks. What we can say is how to make the plan work in an ordinary household. First, read the labels of whatever you buy, and look first at protein and then at fat. Second, plan the week's main meals in advance, so that the soft stage does not mean improvising each day. Third, agree the plan with the people you live with. If a spouse or relatives eat as they always did, you will be tested at every meal, and a little preparation saves a lot of effort.
Cooking for a mixed household is common in a city where over a quarter of residents speak a different mother tongue. Different kitchens bring different staple foods. A coordinator can go through your own usual dishes with you and ask the doctor which are compatible with each stage. That is more useful than a generic menu, because you will actually cook the dishes you already know.
Beyond the first weeks, the aim is to build habits that last: regular meals, sensible portions, protein first, and no sugary or fatty drinks. Weight regain is possible, though very unlikely if you follow the doctor's advice. Proper eating, avoiding high-calorie drinks and regular follow-up with the specialists are the key points. The reason for the follow-up is to catch drift early, while it is still easy to correct.
The plan includes support for 12 months, and the final result is reached 18–24 months after surgery. That is a long period, and for an Espoo resident the point of online follow-up is that you do not have to rearrange your working week every time something needs checking. One coordinator is with you from day one. Progress is checked remotely by photos, and coordinators answer round the clock on WhatsApp and Telegram. Scheduled check-ups look at your wellbeing, your weight and your test results.
The steps in the plan run like this. First comes the consultation and a treatment plan, in which the doctor assesses your health, discusses your goals and orders the tests needed to choose the method. Then you reserve a date. Before the operation come blood and urine tests, an ECG, an ultrasound and a gastroscopy, plus visits to specialists. The operation is done under general anaesthesia using a laparoscopic technique, through 4 small punctures of 5 to 15 mm, with cosmetic sutures so that once healed the marks become almost invisible. You then stay in hospital for 1–5 days under observation. After discharge you receive advice on diet and recovery and attend the scheduled check-ups.
Four methods are carried out: sleeve gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, mini gastric bypass and SADI-S duodeno-ileal bypass. The choice is individual and rests on BMI, related conditions and your goals. A sleeve reduces the volume of the stomach and suits obesity without marked reflux. A bypass reduces the volume and changes the path of food, and is indicated in obesity with diabetes or reflux.
Surgery can help with excess weight, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnoea, varicose veins, joint disease, fatty liver disease and reproductive health problems. It is not suitable for everyone. Contraindications include age under 18, malignant tumours, pregnancy, blood clotting disorders, severe chronic and mental illness, acute illness or flare-ups of chronic disease, and less than six months since breastfeeding ended. If you are planning a pregnancy, doctors advise waiting at least 12–18 months after the operation, while the body stabilises and nutritional status normalises.
Because the consultation is free and carries no obligation, a sensible first step is to gather your height, weight, current medicines and a list of conditions, then send them through WhatsApp or Telegram. You will hear whether surgery looks suitable, which method the doctor has in mind, and what the next step would be.
Kela reimburses private care only when it is necessary treatment of illness, pregnancy or childbirth in line with accepted good practice, and it uses the Käypä hoito recommendations and the health-care service range when judging necessity. It does not pay reimbursement for aesthetic treatment. Bariatric surgery treats obesity and linked illnesses, but whether Kela pays anything in your case is Kela's decision, and its reimbursements are fixed amounts, not a share of the bill. Ask Kela directly and show the answer to your coordinator.
The THL Terve Suomi 2023 survey reports obesity, a BMI of 30 or more, in 30% of Finnish women and 27% of men, about 1.2 million adults. By wellbeing services county the shares range from 17% to 30% for men and from 20% to 28% for women, self-reported. We have no separate figure for Espoo itself, so we do not give one.
Yes. In Espoo 84,225 residents, 25.9% of the population, have a foreign language as their mother tongue, and the consultation is held online through WhatsApp or Telegram, where you can write in the language that is easiest for you. Coordinators answer round the clock. Tell the coordinator at the start which language you prefer and any documents you need explained.
That depends on your work. Office work resumes after 2–4 weeks and physical work after about 1.5 months, and the stay in hospital is 1–5 days. Holidays such as Easter, Ascension, Midsummer and Christmas, when Midsummer Eve and Christmas Eve are generally not working days, can serve as quiet recovery days. Pre-operation tests, however, should not be left to fall into a holiday gap. Your coordinator can count backwards from the date you want to be back at work.
It does not prevent recovery, but it shapes how you walk. January and February have mean maximums of about -2.3 °C and -2.2 °C and minimums near -6.5 °C and -6.9 °C. Snow usually falls after Christmas and melts between late March and early April, and sunshine is scarce from November to January. Choose cleared, lit routes for short walks and ask the doctor what pace suits you. Swimming is allowed after 30 days, and the city has pools in Leppävaara, Keski-Espoo, Espoonlahti and Tapiola.
After the doctor allows more activity, exercise is added gradually as weight drops. The city has about 58 km of shoreline, about 165 islands, more than 100 lakes and ponds, Nuuksio National Park, and the Tapiola and Leppävaara sports parks. Swimming comes first, after 30 days. Anything more demanding, such as a long hike, should be agreed with the doctor beforehand.
Calculate your BMI by dividing your weight in kilograms by your height in metres squared, and note any conditions such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnoea or joint disease. Write down current medicines and what weight-loss methods you have already tried. Surgery is generally justified at a BMI above 40, or above 35 with serious related conditions, and sometimes at lower values if non-surgical methods have failed. Send the details on WhatsApp or Telegram and the doctor will assess them.
Support lasts 12 months, and the final result is reached 18–24 months after surgery. Between check-ups, progress is monitored remotely through photos, and one coordinator stays with you from day one. Scheduled check-ups look at wellbeing, weight and test results. Vitamins and mineral supplements stay a lasting part of your routine, and regular follow-up is one of the key protections against weight regain.
