I am sharing my experience, because before the operation I went through a pile of reviews myself and was looking for real stories. I had a beard transplant six months ago. Honestly, in the first days after the procedure I felt a little jittery: my face looked unfamiliar, there was slight swelling and small scabs. In the first couple of months the hair partly fell out, as the doctor had warned. But now the result truly makes me very happy) From about the 4th month active, even growth began. The transplanted hair took very well, the beard now looks as natural as possible, no bald patches are left. The beard became much thicker and denser, with the shape I had thought about for a long time. All in all, I recommend the clinic, the doctor was polite and explained everything 👍 The result is definitely worth it!

Popular questions

We cover what people
ask before booking

People often say hair implants, but no artificial hair is used. In a hair transplant the doctor moves your own follicles (grafts) from the donor area to thinning or bald areas using FUE or DHI.

City Medical Centre doctors

Of course. City Medical Centre works with people from many cities and many countries; an online appointment is offered before anything is agreed.

Prices start at $2,200 (≈ CHF 1,850) for FUE, $2,500 (≈ CHF 2,100) for DHI, and $2,700 (≈ CHF 2,250) for the combined method. Your final price is set after a free graft count and locked into the contract.

It is finished inside a day, and going home follows at once.

It helps with stable pattern hair loss and a receding hairline when there are enough donor grafts. Some types of alopecia need treatment first; the doctor checks this at the consultation.

You stay numb the whole time, so pain is never an issue.

FUE means tweezer-based, incision-free graft harvesting. DHI means channel-free implantation with a Choi pen. Combined DHI+FUE uses FUE for harvesting and the DHI pen for implanting.

Donor hair volume drives the figure, and the doctor calculates it at a consultation that costs you nothing.

Healing occupies 0–10 days. The 2–4 week shedding of transplanted hair is normal and temporary. Regrowth starts from 3–4 months, real volume appears at 6–9 months, then the result matures at 12–18 months.

Your procedure includes a lifetime hair-growth guarantee under contract.

Why this hair transplant fits a resident of Zurich

FUE and DHI are both suitable for a patient in Zurich. Neither approach calls for cuts or stitches, local anaesthesia is all the pain relief required, and the operation is finished inside one day, so the evening is already free again.

Starting in Zurich costs neither money nor effort: the online consultation costs nothing at all and the doctor, looking at photos of the area, gives a verdict on whether a transplant makes sense for you. Answers come 24/7.

Healing is quick, 0-10 days. The shedding at 2-4 weeks, when the transplanted hairs come out, is normal and short-lived. Growth begins at 3-4 months, and from then on the picture only improves.

Moderate climate, big seasonal swings: what the scalp meets in Zürich

Zürich lies at 409 m above sea level, at the lower end of the Zürichsee, where the Limmat leaves the lake. The annual mean temperature is 9.9 °C and the mean relative humidity is 77.7% (MeteoSwiss normal 1991–2020). Nothing here is extreme. What matters for a transplant is how far the weather moves between January and July, because the same scalp has to be protected in very different ways depending on the month of surgery.

The first stage of recovery is short and well defined. For 0–10 days after the procedure the crusts fall away, the swelling subsides and the treated area slowly recovers. In a humid, changeable climate this is the period when you want a clear plan from the doctor. Ask exactly what may touch the scalp, what should not, and how washing is done. The care plan for the transplant and donor areas, together with advice on washing, sleep and headwear, is part of the programme. Ask for it in writing during the free online consultation and compare it with your weather calendar.

FUE takes grafts from the back of the head or the temples without incisions or stitches. DHI places grafts with a Choi pen without pre-made channels. A combined protocol uses FUE extraction and DHI implantation. All three leave two areas to look after: the donor area and the implanted area. A person living in Zürich should think about both when the doctor explains headwear. A hat that is comfortable over the implanted zone must not press on or rub the donor zone. Sending photos of your own hats and caps to the coordinator on WhatsApp or Telegram is a practical way to settle this before the date is fixed.

Sunshine hours, summer days and the question of headwear

The sun is the clearest seasonal factor in the Zürich figures. Annual sunshine is 1,662 hours, an average of 4.5 hours a day. In July the average is 7.6 hours a day and in June 7.2 hours. In December it falls to 1.3 hours and in January to 1.6. The city has about 51 summer days a year and 11–12 hot days, and the mean daily maximum is 25.1 °C in July and 24.7 °C in August.

A scalp that has just been treated should not be left to the sun on its own. That is why headwear is part of the advice you receive before surgery. The numbers say that a transplant in early summer puts the first weeks of healing into the brightest part of the year, while one in late autumn puts them into the dimmest. Neither is wrong, but each needs a different routine. In summer the question is which hat, from what day and for how long outdoors. In winter the question is mostly warmth and keeping the area clean under a hat.

Do not invent the details yourself. Ask the doctor during the consultation which type of headwear is acceptable in the first days, when it can be dropped, and what to do on a hot day. Write down the answers and ask the coordinator to repeat them by message when the date is close. Progress is tracked by photo, so you can send a picture whenever you doubt something. The coordinator answers 24/7, so a question on a bright June afternoon gets the same attention as one in January.

Frost days, ice days and a rainy calendar

January in Zürich has a mean temperature of 1.0 °C, a mean maximum of 3.8 °C and a mean minimum of −1.9 °C. February's mean minimum is −2.2 °C. Over a year there are about 87 frost days and about 16 ice days. If your surgery falls in the cold months, the early healing weeks coincide with the lowest temperatures. A warm, soft hat that does not press on the donor area becomes a practical question, and the doctor can say what is acceptable and from which day.

Water is the other part of the picture. Annual precipitation is 1,021 mm over 125.2 rain days. July is the wettest month at 116 mm, followed by May at 115 mm, June at 112 mm and August at 109 mm. The driest month is February at 55 mm. Rain on so many days means you will often want a hood or hat outdoors. The care plan should therefore say how to keep the area clean if headwear gets wet, and whether anything must be avoided.

Zürich is a city of water: the lake, the Limmat and the Sihl, which flows into the Limmat at the Platzspitz. The Flussbad Oberer Letten on the Limmat is free to enter and suited only to good swimmers. Whether and when lake or river swimming is acceptable after a transplant is a question for the doctor, because the figures we use here do not give a safe date. Do not assume that a warm day means the water is fine. Ask in the consultation, get the answer in writing, and plan the summer around it.

Choosing a start month: growth stages laid over the Zürich calendar

The recovery timeline is the same in every city. In the first 0–10 days the crusts fall away. At 2–4 weeks the transplanted hairs shed, which is a normal stage: only the hairs shed, and the follicles stay in place. First growth appears at 3–4 months. At 6–9 months the density shows. The final result comes at 12–18 months. Follow-up visits are set at 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months. A calendar lets you see where these stages fall against your own year.

Here is a worked example. Say the procedure takes place on 16 November 2026. The shedding stage then falls roughly between the end of November and mid-December 2026. First growth would be expected from about mid-February to mid-March 2027. The density stage would fall between about mid-May and mid-August 2027, and the final result between about mid-November 2027 and mid-May 2028. These are ranges, not promises, and the doctor will adjust them to your own case.

You can then test the plan against the weather. In this example the shedding weeks come during the shortest days of the year, when sunshine averages 1.3 hours a day in December and 1.6 in January. The density stage runs through the sunniest months, with 7.2 hours a day in June and 7.6 in July. If you prefer to be through shedding before the bright season, a late autumn or winter start fits. If you want the early weeks in mild light, a different month may suit you better. It is your choice, made after a free consultation and with the doctor's view of your donor area.

The scale of the work is also part of the planning. The case examples shown for the method range from 2,500 to 4,000 grafts, and the doctor counts how many you personally need. A larger number of grafts does not change the one-day format, which uses local anaesthesia, but it is worth discussing whether your schedule allows a quiet first fortnight.

Busy weeks in the city: Sechseläuten, the Street Parade and the semester

Zürich has fixed dates that change how the city feels. Sechseläuten is held on the third Monday of April, moved if it falls in Holy Week or on Easter Monday. In 2027 that gives 19 April. The afternoon is a half holiday for city employees. It is a local custom rather than a statutory holiday, so do not count on it to free your whole day. The Street Parade is usually held on the second Saturday in August along the Zürichsee, which would be 14 August 2027. Visitors number around 900,000 (920,000 in 2023, and a record 1,100,000 in 2018).

For someone in the middle of a transplant recovery, a very large outdoor crowd in August sunshine is a poor setting for a scalp still developing. If your surgery were in November 2026, mid-August 2027 would fall inside the 6–9 month stage, when density is showing. By then ordinary life is normal, but if you want to go, ask the doctor about sun protection for a long day outdoors. The same question applies to any other long open-air event.

The city's study calendar also shapes many schedules. Universität Zürich has 28,476 students (2024), and ETH Zürich lists 26,942. If you are a student or work in a university, think about exam periods and deadlines when picking a date. The one-day format and the online follow-up make it easier to fit a procedure around lectures or projects. The visits at 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months can be scheduled around term dates in the same way.

A coordinator is assigned to you from the first message to recovery and will help with documents and visits. Tell them early which weeks you want to keep free, and they will build the plan around them.

Health insurance in Switzerland and what to ask before booking

In Switzerland everyone staying in the country must have health insurance. Basic (OKP) benefits are the same nationwide for all insured and cover illness, accident and maternity. Insurers must offer the basic plan to everyone regardless of age or health status. Adults pay an ordinary annual franchise, with options for a higher one, and then a 10% co-payment up to an annual cap. For inpatient stays there is a daily contribution for persons not living with family members.

The facts we hold do not say that basic insurance pays for hair restoration, so do not assume it does. They do show that basic cover has defined limits: dental care, for example, is paid only in special exceptional cases. Before you book anything, ask your insurer in writing whether a hair transplant for your case is covered at all, and keep the reply. Whatever the answer, the final cost of the procedure here is set after the free consultation, once the grafts are counted, and fixed in the contract. There are no extra payments on the day of surgery.

The first steps happen online. Send photos of the front, top and back of the head, plus the donor area, to the coordinator on WhatsApp or Telegram. The coordinator replies within 15 minutes and is reachable around the clock. The doctor looks at the photos, counts the grafts and says what result is realistic. The doctor also says whether a transplant is suitable at all. Conditions such as trichotillomania, cancer, epilepsy, diabetes mellitus, a pacemaker, serious heart conditions, patchy alopecia or being under 18 are on the list of reasons it may not suit you, and your case may even be solvable without surgery.

Once you confirm the plan, the date is booked after a deposit and confirmed under a medical services contract. Pre-surgery tests follow from a list and instructions the clinic provides. The programme runs from preparation to 12 months after the procedure, and it includes dressings, healing checks, a care plan and a personal coordinator.

Is winter or summer a better time for a transplant if I live in Zürich?

Neither is ruled out. Winter has a mean January temperature of 1.0 °C, about 87 frost days and only 1.3–1.6 hours of sunshine a day, so the early weeks need warm, gentle headwear. Summer has up to 7.6 hours of sun a day in July, so the early weeks need sun protection. Ask the doctor to adapt the care plan to the month you choose.

How many sunny hours should I expect in the first months of recovery?

It depends on the month. The monthly averages are 1.3 hours a day in December, 1.6 in January, 7.2 in June and 7.6 in July. A procedure in late autumn puts the 2–4 week shedding stage into the dimmest months. A procedure in spring puts it near the brightest ones. The doctor will say how long and in what form the area needs covering outdoors.

Does the frost matter for the transplanted area?

Frost days are common in the city, about 87 a year, with about 16 ice days. In the first 0–10 days the area has crusts and swelling, so warmth, gentle headwear and keeping the area clean are the concerns. Ask the doctor which hat is acceptable and from which day, and make sure it does not press on the donor area.

Can I swim in the lake or the Limmat while the hair is growing?

The doctor has to answer this for your case, because the date depends on how your scalp heals. The Flussbad Oberer Letten is suited only to good swimmers, which is a separate point from your recovery. Do not guess from the weather. Ask during the consultation and get the answer in writing.

Does Swiss basic insurance pay for a hair transplant?

We cannot say that it does. Basic (OKP) benefits cover illness, accident and maternity, and some areas such as dental care are paid only in exceptional cases. Ask your insurer in writing whether your situation qualifies. The cost of the procedure is fixed in the contract after the free consultation.

Will Sechseläuten or the Street Parade affect my schedule?

They can. In 2027 Sechseläuten falls on 19 April and the Street Parade is expected on 14 August. The city's half holiday on the Sechseläuten afternoon is a local custom rather than a statutory holiday, and the Street Parade draws around 900,000 visitors to the lake. The coordinator works 24/7 in any case, but you may prefer to plan sun protection and a calmer week around these dates.

How do I start if I live in Zürich?

Message the coordinator on WhatsApp or Telegram, or leave your number in the form. The first consultation is free, and the coordinator replies within 15 minutes. You send photos, the doctor assesses your donor area and counts the grafts, and then you decide. Nothing is booked until you confirm the plan and the dates.
