What to expect
An agreed plan for correction, hospital observation and a year of recovery monitoring.
1The surgeon assesses your figure, discusses your wishes and chooses the best volume, shape and correction method.
2A surgery date is booked in your name: pay the deposit by card at the clinic or by online bank transfer. The terms are recorded in the contract for medical services
3Ahead of surgery you go through full testing — blood tests, an ECG and other examinations as prescribed by the doctor.
4The operation follows your individual mammoplasty plan and is performed under general anaesthesia with continuous monitoring of the patient.
5After the operation you remain in the clinic's comfortable inpatient ward, cared for by the medical team until you are discharged.
6You get a personal recovery programme after the operation. Follow-up visits at 7 days, 3 and 6 months monitor healing; for a year, surgeon consultations are free of charge.

In the run-up to surgery, follow simple advice: keep work and rest in healthy balance, sleep more, avoid stress, anxiety and emotional strain, and ease off physical activity.
Hormonal oral contraceptives should be stopped at least a month before the procedure
Prior to surgery, cease taking aspirin-containing medicines, steroids and hormonal drugs for chronic illness
Have your tests done a week before surgery
Swelling after surgery goes away after 3 weeks
Scars form within 3 weeks
No physical exertion (lifting over 3 kg)
No raising arms above shoulder level — 3 weeks
After correction, recovery includes 1–1.5 months in compression garments
Avoid intense gym workouts for up to 40 days and overly active aerobics; after a month light cardio is possible. Watch your diet and meals.
Within 3 months, discomfort disappears
Baths and saunas are off-limits up to three months, as is physiotherapy
During 3 months all tissue inflammation subsides and a “pocket” forms around the implant

FAQ
Yes. Boob job is the everyday name for breast augmentation. At City Medical Centre it is done with round or anatomical implants that the surgeon chooses with you at the consultation.
Breast enlargement adds volume with implants. A breast lift (mastopexy) raises sagging breasts and removes excess skin. Which one suits you is decided at the free consultation.
Mammoplasty is an umbrella for several procedures: augmentation (increasing volume with implants), reduction (taking away excess tissue and skin), mastopexy (lifting sagging breasts), reconstruction (after mastectomy) and asymmetry correction. Your wishes and the surgeon's advice determine the best individual method.

With every recommendation followed, complications seldom occur, though they can include hematoma or seroma, wound infection, reduced or increased nipple sensitivity, capsular contracture, aesthetic asymmetry, wound separation and tissue necrosis.
The results of mammoplasty are long-lasting: roughly 10–15 years after augmentation (until the implants are replaced) and 5–10 years after a lift or reduction. Weight, pregnancy, skin aging and gravity all influence how long they last. Wearing supportive underwear and managing your weight help maintain the result.
After mammoplasty, breastfeeding depends on the type of surgery. If augmentation uses an under-breast or armpit incision and the implant goes under the muscle, lactation is typically preserved because glandular tissue is not damaged. A lift or reduction has a higher risk since ducts may be cut. Discuss it with your surgeon before surgery.
Implant choice considers material (silicone looks most natural, saline is used less often), shape (round or anatomical teardrop), surface (smooth or textured), size and profile. The surgeon will choose the best option for your anatomy and wishes.
The surgery is carried out under general anaesthesia, and the patient feels nothing. Moderate discomfort is possible during the first 1–3 days and is relieved by pain medication. Pain falls significantly by day 5–7, and by weeks 2–3 discomfort is over. If you have severe pain, tell your doctor at once.
You may go back to work (with no physical exertion) after 7–14 days, take light walks after 1–2 weeks, and do fitness and swimming after 4–6 weeks. Strength training is allowed after 3 months, pool and sea after 4–6 weeks. Compression garments stay on for 4–6 weeks. Timing depends on your recovery.
Mammoplasty is not linked by scientific evidence to an increased breast cancer risk, and implants do not cause cancer. After surgery, keep doing regular screening: self-exams, mammography and ultrasound. Tell any examining doctor about your implants every time.
Mammoplasty after a C-section is possible, but your body must fully recover first. Wait at least 6–12 months after giving birth and after breastfeeding ends. A surgeon's consultation and check-up are required before surgery.
Yes, mammoplasty leaves scars, but they are minimal when the surgeon is skilled. The incisions are made in concealed areas, under the breast, around the areola or in the armpit. For the first months scars are reddish, then within 6–12 months they fade and become barely visible.
Slight asymmetry in the first weeks after surgery is normal: it is caused by swelling and uneven healing. If a difference in shape or size persists after 3–6 months, see your surgeon for an examination to find the cause.
A temporary decrease or increase in nipple and breast sensitivity is possible after mammoplasty, caused by irritated nerve endings. Most of the time sensitivity returns within 3–12 months. If it has not improved after one year, see your surgeon.
Hormonal drugs (contraceptives, hormone replacement therapy) have no direct effect on implants, but they can cause swelling or changes in breast tissue volume that temporarily alter appearance. Always tell your surgeon about such medications before surgery.

Breast augmentation is a mammoplasty in which implants add volume and correct the shape of the breasts. For patients from Utrecht, the surgeon helps choose the implant material, shape, surface, size and profile to match individual anatomy. Silicone implants give the most natural look, and both round and anatomical teardrop shapes are available. The procedure suits women who want fuller breasts or a better contour.
Nothing is rushed. First, surgeon and patient agree on a plan together; then a full diagnostic work-up confirms it is safe to proceed. During surgery you feel nothing thanks to general anaesthesia. The first one to three days bring moderate discomfort relieved by painkillers, and by the second or third week it passes. That is the typical course for women in Utrecht.
A free consultation is the easiest way to get an exact figure. The surgeon assesses your anatomy, models the result and confirms the plan; the base cost of augmentation is from $4,700 (≈ €4,200). Everything around the surgery — anaesthesia, inpatient stay, 24/7 monitoring, personal support and a year of follow-up — is in that amount. Patients from Utrecht can apply through the site or a messenger.

I went to Dmitry Sergeyevich for breast augmentation with implants. At the consultation everything was explained in detail, and together we chose the best size. The operation under combined anaesthesia took 2 hours, and I was discharged home the next day. The swelling went down in about a month, and my breasts look very natural. The year of follow-up care is a real lifesaver: you can always ask a question and get an answer. Thank you to the clinic!

After two births I decided on a breast lift without implants. I chose Dmitry Sergeyevich and have no regrets. The result exceeded all my expectations: my breasts are lifted and the shape is youthful and firm. The incisions are minimal and almost invisible. I spent one day in the hospital, and the room was very comfortable. I recommend him!

After breast augmentation a compression garment is worn for 1–1.5 months while the body recovers from the correction. The doctor sets the exact period for you. In Utrecht that stretch often falls on a cool, damp background. The 1991–2020 normals from the De Bilt station give a January mean maximum of 6.1 °C and a minimum of 0.9 °C. February is 7.0 °C and 0.7 °C, and December 6.7 °C and 1.6 °C. Relative humidity averages 82% over the year and reaches 89% in November and December.
For a garment, this is mostly a question of practical dressing. Raising the arms above shoulder level is not allowed for 3 weeks, so winter coats, cardigans and tops that open at the front are easier than anything pulled over the head. Post-operative swelling fades after about 3 weeks, so clothes that fit comfortably before the operation may feel different at first. It helps to try your planned outfits at home beforehand and set aside the ones that need no stretching.
If your recovery falls in summer, the numbers are gentler. The warmest month, July, has a mean maximum of 23.1 °C and a minimum of 13.0 °C. August is 22.9 °C and 12.5 °C. Across the whole year the mean maximum is 14.6 °C and the mean minimum 6.3 °C. The station has also recorded 37.5 °C in July, so an unusually hot spell is possible. Put the question of wearing the garment in the heat to the doctor during the consultation. Do not improvise on your own.
Winter adds another factor. Utrecht has about 25 snow days a year: 6 each in January and February, 5 in December and 4 in March. While the limit of 3 kg and the ban on strenuous activity apply for the first 3 weeks, a slippery pavement matters more than the cold itself. A fall with a heavy bag is exactly what the restrictions are meant to prevent. Arrange grocery deliveries and lighter loads in advance, and ask the coordinator any practical questions on WhatsApp or Telegram, which are answered round the clock.
Utrecht is a city of water. Of the municipality's 99.21 km2, 5.38 km2 is water, and the central Oudegracht follows part of an ancient Rhine branch. The Vaartse Rijn links the city to the Hollandse IJssel at IJsselstein. The moat ring around the old town was partly restored as a waterway and completed in 2020. Seeing so much water is a reason to ask early when swimming will be possible again. Water in the city does not change the medical timeline.
According to the recovery plan, pool and sea swimming is possible from 4–6 weeks, and fitness classes and swimming are mentioned for the same period. Baths, saunas and physiotherapy are not allowed for up to three months. By that time the tissue is free of inflammatory changes and a pocket has formed around the implant. In practice a pool visit comes much earlier than a sauna evening, and the two should not be confused when planning.
Here is a worked example for a summer-minded patient. Say the operation is on 2 March 2027. Four to six weeks later brings you to the middle of April or the very start of May for the first pool session. Three months later brings you to early June for baths and saunas. Utrecht's sunshine statistics give some orientation for this schedule. May averages 217.5 hours of sun and July 213.9 hours, while December has only 55.5 hours and January 66.6. The wettest months are July with 84.8 mm, December with 83.4 mm and August with 83.1 mm, and April is the driest at 41.1 mm.
Questions about sun on healing tissue and scars are not covered by general rules. Raise them during the consultation, when the doctor can see your skin type and the planned incision. Scars develop within about 3 weeks, and the follow-up check at 7 days is a good moment to ask how to protect them before your first outdoor swim.
Cycling is the main way of getting around Utrecht: 51% of journeys within the city are made by bicycle, more than by any other mode. The bicycle parking station by Central Station holds 12,500 bicycles. For a patient planning breast augmentation, the sensible question is when the daily routine can return to normal. The recovery plan we work from does not list cycling by name, so the doctor will tell you during the consultation what applies to you. Until then, easy walks are possible from 1–2 weeks, and they are a safe replacement for short everyday journeys.
The documented restrictions are specific. For 3 weeks there is no strenuous activity, and nothing over 3 kg is lifted. For the same 3 weeks arms are not raised above shoulder level. In Utrecht this affects small things such as locking a bike, lifting it onto a rack, pulling a heavy door or carrying a laptop bag and groceries together. Think through your own week and decide who or what will take over these jobs.
Gym and sport have their own schedule. Intense gym training is skipped for up to 40 days, and overly active aerobics should be avoided. Light cardio may be possible after about a month. Strength training returns from 3 months. If your routine is upper-body heavy, with weights, rowing or climbing, tell the doctor about it during the consultation, because implant size and profile are chosen individually and your training is part of that discussion.
Utrecht has a strong club culture. SV Kampong has 4,500 members and is described as the largest amateur sports club in the Netherlands. The city also hosted the Grand Depart and first stage of the Tour de France in July 2015 and the European Youth Olympic Festival in July 2013. If you play a team sport, speak to your trainer in advance about a staged return to training. Agree it in writing with the doctor's guidance, and do not let enthusiasm for the first match shorten the 40 days and 3 months set out above.
The operation itself needs one day at the clinic, and a return to work without physical exertion is possible after 7–14 days. That is a short absence, which makes Dutch public holidays a useful part of the plan. They are 1 January, Easter Sunday and Monday, King's Day on 27 April, Liberation Day on 5 May, Ascension, Whit Sunday and Monday, and 25 and 26 December. Good Friday is not a mandatory paid holiday, so do not count on it as a free day.
Here is an example. If the operation takes place on 11 January 2027, the first working days without physical load would fall between about 18 and 25 January, depending on your recovery. The check-up at 7 days comes at the end of the first week. The 3-month check would fall in mid-April, close to King's Day, and the 6-month check in mid-July. Nothing here is fixed in advance. The coordinator agrees the real dates with you, and it is worth putting them in your calendar the moment they are confirmed.
Utrecht's rhythm has a strong student element. About 67,000 students study in the city, just over 33,000 of them living there. Hogeschool Utrecht has about 37,000 students, and Utrecht University, founded in 1636, is the largest university in the Netherlands. If you study or teach, check the dates of exams, deadlines and practical classes before choosing an operation date. For desk-based work the 7–14 days is the realistic frame, but long days with a bag on one shoulder should wait until the 3 kg limit has ended.
The cultural calendar also gives fixed reference points. Le Guess Who? runs for four days in mid-November in venues across the city. The Netherlands Film Festival takes place every year in September–October, and the 2025 edition ran from 26 September to 3 October. If you want to be at a late-autumn or early-autumn event, count back at least 3 weeks, when swelling fades and restrictions on strenuous activity end, and decide whether you want to go in person or watch later. Consultations are online, so the first conversations do not have to wait for any of these dates.
Utrecht had 378,140 inhabitants on 1 January 2026, and the city expects about 400,000 by 2030. Most of these residents are covered by the same basic health insurance, so the rules published by Zorginstituut Nederland apply to everyone. Plastic surgery is covered by basic insurance only with a medical reason, such as a functional impairment or a directly visible disfigurement from an accident, illness or treatment, and some congenital conditions. Surgery only to improve appearance is not covered, and neither is surgery for psychological or social reasons. Breast augmentation for volume or shape is normally in this second group.
The medical indications we work from include back and neck pain from heavy breasts, correction after a previous operation, and reconstruction after mastectomy. Whether any of these meets the insurer's conditions is decided by the insurer, not by us. Covered plastic surgery has no co-payment, but its cost falls under the mandatory deductible (eigen risico), and some insurers require prior approval (machtiging). If you suspect that your case may qualify, ask your insurer about this before you make firm plans, and keep the answer in writing.
The preparation steps are simple but have a schedule. Starting 1–2 months ahead, keep a healthy balance of work and rest, sleep more and avoid stress and strong emotions. Reduce physical activity as well. Hormonal oral contraceptives are stopped at least one month before. In the 1–2 weeks before the operation, aspirin-containing drugs, steroids and hormonal medications for chronic conditions are stopped. Tests, including blood tests and an ECG, are done a week before the operation.
About 52.5% of households in Utrecht are single-person households, and about 52% of residents are female. So it is worth deciding in advance who will help during the first days after discharge, who will carry the shopping during the 3-week limit and who will be on hand if you feel unwell. The recovery plan includes check-ups at 7 days, 3 and 6 months, and consultations with the doctor are free for a year. Between them, the coordinator answers messages on WhatsApp and Telegram round the clock.
Zorginstituut Nederland states that plastic surgery is covered only with a medical reason, such as functional impairment, a directly visible disfigurement from an accident, illness or treatment, or certain congenital conditions. Surgery only to improve appearance is not covered, and neither is surgery for psychological or social reasons. Where a medical reason does apply, the cost falls under the mandatory deductible, and some insurers ask for prior approval (machtiging). Check your own policy before planning.
The garment is worn for 1–1.5 months. In winter the De Bilt normals show January highs of 6.1 °C and lows of 0.9 °C, so layered clothing hides it easily, though humidity reaches 89% in November and December. In summer July highs are 23.1 °C and August 22.9 °C. Neither season is ruled out. Ask the doctor during the consultation how to handle an unusually hot day, since the station has recorded 37.5 °C.
Yes. These are Dutch public holidays, and the return to work without physical exertion is possible after 7–14 days. The holidays can extend your free days, but do not count on them to replace recovery time. Good Friday is not a mandatory paid holiday. The coordinator can help you match an operation date to your calendar, and exact timing depends on your individual recovery.
The recovery plan we work from does not name cycling, so the doctor will answer this for you. The documented limits are no strenuous activity and nothing over 3 kg for 3 weeks, and no raising arms above shoulder level for the same period. Easy walks are possible from 1–2 weeks. Because 51% of journeys in Utrecht are by bicycle, ask the question early and plan alternatives for the first weeks.
Pool and sea swimming is possible from 4–6 weeks. Baths, saunas and physiotherapy are not allowed for up to three months. For an operation on 2 March 2027, that means the first pool visit in mid-April or early May and sauna or bath use from early June. Your own doctor-approved schedule is the one to follow.
With about 67,000 students in the city, many people work around semesters and exams. A return to desk work is possible after 7–14 days, while strength training waits until 3 months and intense gym training up to 40 days. Pick a date that leaves the first 3 weeks free of heavy bags, long days and deadlines, and tell the coordinator your dates when you write on WhatsApp or Telegram.
They are part of the recovery programme, and consultations with the doctor are free for a year. For an operation on 11 January 2027 they would fall around 18 January, mid-April and mid-July. The coordinator agrees the real dates with you, so you can avoid public holidays and busy weeks at work. Write down each date when it is confirmed.
Starting 1–2 months ahead, keep a good work-rest balance, sleep more and reduce physical activity. Stop hormonal oral contraceptives at least one month before. Stop aspirin-containing drugs, steroids and hormonal medications for chronic conditions 1–2 weeks before, and do the tests a week before the operation. The doctor will confirm each step during the consultation.
