A hair transplant is not only about the scalp. Grafts from the back of the head, the FUE method — only the area changes.

Beard transplant

FUE method, no cuts or stitches

Grafts are drawn from the donor area at the back of the head and moved through micro-punctures of about 1 mm, and no scars are left behind. The shape is agreed with the doctor before the operation, taking your facial features into account. Transplanted hair grows for life: trim and style the beard as usual.

The surgeon maps the brow shape during the first consultation, sample photos are examined together and your face's proportions dictate the outline. I am sharing my experience, because before the operation I went through a pile of reviews myself and was looking for real stories. I had a beard transplant six months ago. Honestly, in the first days after the procedure I felt a little jittery: my face looked unfamiliar, there was slight swelling and small scabs. In the first couple of months the hair partly fell out, as the doctor had warned. But now the result truly makes me very happy) From about the 4th month active, even growth began. The transplanted hair took very well, the beard now looks as natural as possible, no bald patches are left. The beard became much thicker and denser, with the shape I had thought about for a long time. All in all, I recommend the clinic, the doctor was polite and explained everything 👍 The result is definitely worth it!

Popular questions

We answer what people
ask before booking

People often say hair implants, but no artificial hair is used. In a hair transplant the doctor moves your own follicles (grafts) from the donor area to thinning or bald areas using FUE or DHI.

City Medical Centre doctors

Yes — people living in other cities and other countries are treated regularly, and an online consultation comes first.

FUE: $2,200 (≈ €2,000). DHI: $2,500 (≈ €2,250). Combined: $2,700 (≈ €2,450). A free consultation and graft count gives you the final, contract-fixed price with no hidden extras.

You spend a day on it and return home once it finishes.

It helps with stable pattern hair loss and a receding hairline when there are enough donor grafts. Some types of alopecia need treatment first; the doctor checks this at the consultation.

It is pain-free, with local anaesthesia used from start to end.

FUE is the classic method: grafts are harvested with tweezers, with no cuts or stitches. DHI implants grafts without channels, using a Choi pen. A combined method harvests grafts by FUE and implants them with the DHI pen.

The doctor does the counting at no charge, and the result follows from what the donor area can supply.

Allow 0–10 days for the skin to close. The 2–4 week shed is expected and passes. Growth comes back at 3–4 months, density builds through 6–9 months, and the finished result stands at 12–18 months.

Your procedure includes a lifetime hair-growth guarantee under contract.

Hair transplant and everyday life in Utrecht

A resident of Utrecht can plan around a single day: FUE and DHI leave no cuts and no stitches and are done under local anaesthesia. Graft survival stands at 98-100 %, while a price from $2,200 (≈ €2,000) is fixed in the contract after the free counting of grafts.

Begin from your own sofa if you are in Utrecht. The online consultation is free of charge, the doctor studies pictures of the thinning area and gives a plain answer on whether a transplant helps. Contact is open 24/7.

Plan on 0-10 days of healing, then a normal shedding of the transplanted hairs at 2-4 weeks, then patience until 3-4 months, which is when growth begins and the whole undertaking starts to look worthwhile.

Damp, mild and short of light: what Utrecht's weather means for a scalp after a transplant

Utrecht sits at about 5 m above sea level, with canals running through the old centre. The Oudegracht follows part of an ancient Rhine branch, and the moat ring around the old town was restored as a waterway in 2020. Water is part of the city's geography: the municipality covers 99.21 km2, of which 5.38 km2 is water. For scalp care, the practical result is a damp climate. At the De Bilt station, relative humidity averages 82% over the year and reaches 89% in November and December. Annual precipitation is 849.7 mm, spread over 131 days with at least 1 mm of rain.

A wet, humid autumn is when many people start thinking about a transplant, so it helps to know what the weather means for the early healing period. During the first 0-10 days the treated area goes through its crusting and swelling stage. The crusts fall away, the swelling subsides, and the skin slowly recovers. In that period the scalp should be kept clean and left alone, and the main climate question is what you put on your head when you step outside. A damp cap, a wet hood or a scarf pulled tight over the recipient area are all things to ask about before the procedure. The care plan from City Medical Centre includes advice on washing your hair, on sleep and on headwear, and the coordinator will answer questions on WhatsApp or Telegram at any hour.

Cold is part of the picture too. In the 1991-2020 normals, January has a mean maximum of 6.1 °C and a mean minimum of 0.9 °C. February is 7.0 °C and 0.7 °C, and December is 6.7 °C and 1.6 °C. The city sees about 25 snow days a year: 6 each in January and February, 5 in December and 4 in March. The record low is -24.8 °C, though it is an outlier. Winter is therefore normally cold and wet rather than extreme, and what matters for a healing scalp is the combination of low temperature and moisture. Ask the doctor during the consultation what kind of headwear is suitable at each stage, and bring up your usual winter routine so the answer fits your real days.

Summer brings the opposite concern. July has a mean maximum of 23.1 °C and a mean minimum of 13.0 °C, and August is 22.9 °C and 12.5 °C. The record is 37.5 °C, in July. Sunshine totals 1,714.6 hours a year, with 217.5 hours in May and 213.9 in July, against 55.5 in December and 66.6 in January. Light is therefore concentrated in late spring and summer, which is when a scalp that has gone through a transplant needs the most thought about sun exposure. This is part of why planning the whole recovery year, not just the day of the procedure, makes sense for someone living here.

Caps, helmets and the bicycle question

In Utrecht, 51% of journeys within the city are made by bicycle, more than by any other mode. The bicycle parking station by Central Station holds 12,500 bicycles. For a patient planning a hair transplant, that figure is a practical prompt more than a curiosity. If cycling is how you get to work, university or the shops, you should settle early how you will manage the first period afterwards.

Three questions are worth bringing to the consultation. First, when can a helmet or a tight cap touch the treated areas, and what kind of padding or fit is suitable? Second, how should you protect the scalp from rain and wind on a bicycle while the area is still healing? Third, when can you return to cycling at a normal pace? The care plan covers a return to sport and hair care, and the doctor can explain how that applies to daily cycling. The answer depends on the extent of the procedure, so we do not give a single date here. What we can say is that this is a decision for the doctor, based on your photos and your plan, not a rule of thumb.

The donor area at the back of the head deserves the same attention as the recipient area. In FUE, grafts are harvested from the back of the head or the temples without stitches. A helmet strap, a backpack with a head-height support or a hood can all rub against that area. Describe your usual commute so the doctor can tell you which of these matter.

Sport clubs are part of city life as well. SV Kampong has 4,500 members and is described as the largest amateur sports club in the Netherlands. If you play a team sport, plan the return to training with the doctor in advance. Contact, sweat and head protection each raise their own questions. The coordinator keeps the plan and tracks your progress through photos, so a question about training can be answered with your own recovery stage in view.

Planning the growth months around the Dutch calendar

A transplant is a procedure of one day, but the result takes much longer to show. The stages in the plan are 0-10 days of healing, 2-4 weeks of shedding of the transplanted hairs, 3-4 months for first growth, 6-9 months when density shows, and 12-18 months for the end result. The follow-up checks fall at 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months. Laying those stages over the local calendar makes it easier to choose a date that suits you.

Take a worked example: a procedure on 9 November 2026. The healing stage then runs through about 19 November. Le Guess Who? runs for four days in mid-November in venues across the city, so anyone attending would be in the crusting phase. That is only an illustration of how an event can fall inside the healing window, not a recommendation either way. Shedding, a normal stage in which only the hairs fall out and the follicles stay in place, would come from roughly the end of November into early December. The Christmas holidays on 25 and 26 December and New Year's Day on 1 January fall about seven weeks after that procedure date. The first month check-in would fall in early December.

First growth, 3-4 months after that date, would arrive roughly between February and March 2027. The 6-9 month stage, when density shows, would fall between May and August 2027. In that stretch, King's Day on 27 April and Liberation Day on 5 May come just before it. Easter Sunday and Monday, Ascension, and Whit Sunday and Monday are also public holidays. The Dutch public holiday list does not include Good Friday as a mandatory paid holiday, so check with your employer if you want to schedule a check-in around it. The end result at 12-18 months would arrive between November 2027 and May 2028.

Because online check-ins are done with photos, holidays do not stop a follow-up. The coordinator answers 24/7 on WhatsApp and Telegram, so a holiday week does not leave a gap. Where the calendar matters most is around the first two or three weeks, when you will want less social and work exposure. Some people pick a date after a busy autumn period, and others prefer to start early in the winter so the shedding phase passes in the darker months and the first growth appears with the lighter spring. Which is better for you is a personal decision. The doctor will give a plan, and the date is confirmed under a medical services contract once the deposit is paid.

One more point is about the early shedding stage. It surprises many people, because the transplanted hairs fall out within 2-4 weeks, while the follicles stay in place. A patient who has been told this beforehand is less likely to worry about it. One reviewer described exactly this: the hair partly fell out in the first couple of months, as the doctor had warned, and active growth began from about the 4th month.

Insurance in the Netherlands: what to clarify before you book

Dutch basic health insurance follows a clear rule for plastic surgery. According to Zorginstituut Nederland, it is covered only with a medical reason. That means a functional impairment, or a directly visible disfigurement from an accident, an illness or its treatment, or some congenital conditions. Surgery done only to improve appearance is not covered, and neither is surgery for psychological or social reasons. This is the framework the insurers work from.

For hair restoration, that means you should not assume anything. Whether a particular case meets the medical-reason test is for the insurer to decide, not for the clinic or for a website. The service text lists conditions such as hair loss from androgenetic or diffuse alopecia, effects left by an injury or burn, and hair loss from illness. The doctor will assess your case during the free consultation, but the clinic cannot predict an insurer's decision.

Two further details from the same source are worth knowing. Covered plastic surgery carries no co-payment, but its costs fall under the mandatory annual deductible (eigen risico). GP care is exempt from the deductible. Some insurers also require prior approval, a machtiging, before treatment. If you think your case may qualify, ask your insurer in writing what they need, and send any answer to your coordinator so it can be considered together with your plan.

If the insurer does not cover the procedure, the clinic's own terms apply. The price is set at the free consultation after the grafts are counted, and it is fixed in the contract. Instalments are also available. The first consultation is free and does not require booking a procedure, so you can ask all these questions before making any commitment.

Recovering at home when the household is small

Utrecht had 378,140 inhabitants on 1 January 2026, and the city expects about 400,000 by 2030. About 52.5% of households are single-person households. There are also about 67,000 students, just over 33,000 of whom live in the city. For recovery, those figures matter in a practical way. Many people will be managing the first days by themselves, with no one at home to check the back of the head or help with washing.

A few practical steps help. Before the procedure, agree on who can be reached if you need a second opinion on how the donor area looks. Take photos at the stages the coordinator recommends, since progress is tracked by photo. Have what you need for washing and dressing in the house before the day. The care plan covers the donor and transplant areas, and the clinic provides the dressings and healing checks that are needed. A personal coordinator guides you from the first enquiry to recovery.

The process is simple. You send photos on WhatsApp or Telegram, a doctor assesses them for free, and you get the number of grafts and a quote. If the plan suits you, you confirm it and the dates before anything is booked. The surgery itself is done in one day under local anaesthesia, and pre-surgery tests are completed beforehand from the list the clinic provides. The methods are FUE, DHI, or a combination, in which extraction is by FUE and implantation by DHI. The cases shown range from 2,500 to 4,000 grafts, and the doctor decides what suits your donor area and your goals.

A transplant is not for everyone. Contraindications in the service text include trichotillomania, body dysmorphic disorder, cancer, being under 18, epilepsy, serious heart conditions, diabetes mellitus, a pacemaker, AIDS/HIV, Hepatitis B/C, pulmonary embolism and intolerance to anaesthetics. If one of these applies, the doctor will tell you at the consultation, and you will not waste time on a procedure that cannot help.

Does Utrecht's humid climate affect how a transplanted scalp heals?

The city's relative humidity averages 82% a year and reaches 89% in November and December, so damp air is normal here. In the first 0-10 days the crusts fall away and the swelling subsides, and the main practical issue is what you wear on your head in wet weather. The care plan includes advice on washing, sleep and headwear, and the doctor will explain what suits each stage.

Is autumn or spring a better time to plan a transplant in Utrecht?

Neither is better in every case. A procedure in November 2026 would put shedding (2-4 weeks) in the darkest months and first growth (3-4 months) in February-March 2027. Mean maximum temperatures in winter are around 6-7 °C, which suits wearing headwear without overheating. A spring date shifts everything towards the sunniest months, with 217.5 hours of sunshine in May. The choice depends on your work, your social calendar and what the doctor advises.

I cycle every day. When can I go back to it?

Cycling is the main way of getting around Utrecht, with 51% of journeys made by bicycle, so this is a common question. The care plan includes a return to sport and hair care, and the doctor sets the timing for your case. Ask specifically about helmets, hoods and straps near the donor area at the back of the head and the treated area.

Will Dutch public holidays disrupt the follow-up checks?

The follow-ups are at 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months and are tracked by photo, with a coordinator available 24/7 on WhatsApp and Telegram. The public holidays include King's Day on 27 April, Liberation Day on 5 May, Easter Sunday and Monday, Ascension, Whit Sunday and Monday, and 25 and 26 December. They do not close the contact channel, so a holiday only affects how quickly you can get medical tests done locally.

Will my Dutch basic insurance cover a hair transplant?

It depends on the insurer's assessment. Zorginstituut Nederland says plastic surgery is covered by basic insurance only with a medical reason, and not when done only to beautify appearance or for psychological or social reasons. Some insurers require prior approval (machtiging), and covered care falls under the mandatory annual deductible. Ask your insurer in writing before you decide, and share the answer with your coordinator.

What if I live alone and cannot see the back of my head?

In Utrecht about 52.5% of households are single-person, so many people are in this situation. Photos tracked through your coordinator help, as does arranging in advance for someone to check the donor area if needed. The clinic provides dressings, healing checks and a care plan, and the coordinator can go through the steps with you before the procedure.

What should I send for the first assessment?

Photos of the front, top, sides and back of the head, taken in good light, sent on WhatsApp or Telegram. The doctor looks at the donor area, counts the grafts and says what result is achievable. This is free and does not require booking a procedure. The doctor will also tell you whether a transplant is suitable at all.
