FAQ
Yes, bariatric surgery is the medical term for it. At City Medical Centre the main methods are sleeve gastrectomy (gastric sleeve) and gastric bypass; the surgeon chooses the method by your BMI and health.
Usually a BMI over 40, or over 35 with related health conditions. The surgeon confirms whether surgery suits you at the consultation.

Surgery is prescribed only when clear criteria are met
BMI is the key measure used to assess how severe obesity is. You get it by dividing body weight (kg) by height squared (m²). Surgery is generally justified at a BMI above 40, or above 35 when serious related conditions are present. Sometimes it is also considered at lower values — when non-surgical methods have not worked.
It is common to confuse them, but their goals are fundamentally different. Bariatric surgery treats obesity and related diseases medically. By changing how the digestive tract works, it addresses the causes of excess weight and metabolism. Plastic surgery shapes the body's outer contours; it does not treat obesity and has no effect on metabolism.
Four main types of bariatric surgery are performed at City Medical Centre: sleeve gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, mini gastric bypass (MGB) and SADI-S duodeno-ileal bypass. Each is selected individually based on BMI, related conditions and patient goals.
We rely on modern laparoscopic technique. The operation is performed through 4 small punctures of 5 to 15 mm. Cosmetic sutures are used, so after healing the marks are barely visible.
Recovery depends on your activity. Office work: after 2–4 weeks. Physical work: after 1.5 months. Sport and activity: swimming allowed after 30 days, other exercise added step by step as weight drops. Travel and holidays: plan them no earlier than a month after surgery.
Your diet changes step by step: from liquid food to soft and then to solid. The emphasis is on protein and on cutting high-calorie, fatty food.
It is possible to get pregnant after bariatric surgery, but doctors recommend a minimum wait of 12–18 months. During it the body stabilizes, weight reaches its target and nutritional status is normalized.
Yes, vitamins are essential after bariatric surgery. As digestive anatomy changes, the body absorbs certain nutrients less well, so regular vitamin and mineral supplements become a lasting part of the patient's life.
Although weight regain after bariatric surgery is possible, it is very unlikely if you follow the doctor's advice. Proper eating, avoiding high-calorie drinks and regular follow-up with City Medical Centre specialists are key.

Bariatric surgery is a medical treatment for obesity and related diseases. Unlike plastic surgery, it changes how the digestive tract works and addresses the causes of excess weight. For patients from Utrecht, four main methods are available: sleeve gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, mini gastric bypass and SADI-S. Each is chosen individually based on BMI, related conditions and personal goals.
A personal coordinator is assigned from day one, so no one goes through the process alone. After the first examination, each patient gets an individual diagnostic programme to identify every disorder in the body. Then the surgeon selects the method and performs the laparoscopic operation, and a doctor stays nearby 24/7. That is the sequence for everyone from Utrecht.
Before spending on another diet, get a professional assessment. A short no-cost talk with the surgeon, about a quarter of an hour, shows whether your BMI and related conditions justify surgery. If they do, one package takes you through tests, the operation, care in the ward and follow-up, with the weight loss result set in a contract. Residents of Utrecht can apply online.

The decision to have bariatric surgery was not easy for me. I worried both about the operation itself and about how my life would change afterwards. At the consultation Andrey Georgievich explained everything in detail, so little by little my fear turned into confidence. What matters most to me now is the result and the chance to treat my health and lifestyle differently.

Statistics Netherlands (CBS) measured that in 2024 some 50.4% of Dutch adults aged 18 and over were overweight, meaning a BMI of 25 or higher. Of those, 15.7% were obese, with a BMI of 30 or higher. Ten years earlier, in 2014, the figures were 49.4% and 13.3%. The overall share of overweight adults barely moved, but the obese group grew. A separate CBS calculation for 2023 found that 16% of adults aged 20 and over were obese, three times the 5% recorded in the early 1980s.
For a resident of Utrecht, these numbers show that obesity is a common condition in the national population, not a private failing. It develops gradually and is hard to reverse with willpower alone, which is why medicine treats it as a disease. BMI is the first measure doctors use. You calculate it by dividing your weight in kilograms by your height in metres squared. Surgery is generally justified at a BMI above 40, or above 35 when serious related conditions are present. Sometimes it is also considered at lower values, when non-surgical methods have not worked.
The city is large enough that these national shares mean thousands of people. Utrecht had 378,140 inhabitants on 1 January 2026, and the municipality expects about 400,000 by 2030, 450,000 by 2039 and 488,000 by 2045. We do not claim to know how many of them live with obesity. The national percentages simply show that a patient who contacts us from this growing city is far from alone.
Bariatric surgery is the medical term for weight loss surgery. It treats obesity and the illnesses that come with it. The list of conditions that surgery can help includes hypertension, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, joint disease, fatty liver disease and some reproductive health problems. That is why the first conversation is about your health and test results, not about the number on the scales alone.
Many people in the Netherlands ask first whether basic health insurance would pay for an operation. Zorginstituut Nederland, the national health care institute, publishes the rules. For adults, bariatric surgery belongs to the basic package under strict conditions. One route is a BMI above 40. Another is a BMI of 35 to 40 together with a comorbidity, a related illness. A third is type 2 diabetes with a BMI of 30 or more. These criteria are set out in a position statement that took effect on 10 May 2023. The institute also notes that a lifestyle programme, known by the abbreviation GLI, is typically tried first.
Young people have their own rule. Bariatric surgery for adolescents aged 13 to 18 is covered from 26 May 2026, after lifestyle treatment has failed. The thresholds are a BMI above 40, or 35 to 40 with a related disease. The institute expects about 100 to 150 young people a year to enter the selection and only 10 to 20 to qualify. In our medical text, age under 18 is listed as a contraindication for the procedures we perform. A teenager from Utrecht should therefore follow the national route and not look to us for surgery.
Wait times and selection for insured care are decided by the insurer and the treating hospital. We cannot predict them. Some insurers require prior approval, called a machtiging, before covered care begins. The mandatory annual deductible, the eigen risico, also applies to many covered treatments, though GP care is exempt. Check the current terms of your own policy and ask the insurer in writing what applies to you.
Plastic surgery follows a different logic. The institute says it is covered only with a medical reason, such as a functional impairment or a directly visible disfigurement. Surgery purely to beautify appearance is not covered, nor is surgery for psychological or social reasons. Bariatric surgery is not plastic surgery. It treats obesity and metabolism by changing how the digestive tract works, whereas plastic surgery reshapes the outer contours of the body and does not treat obesity.
Our coordinator can tell you, during the free consultation, which of these routes your numbers resemble. The consultation does not commit you to surgery. It gives you a clear medical picture to take back to your insurer or your GP.
City Medical Centre carries out four main types of bariatric operation: sleeve gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, mini gastric bypass (MGB) and SADI-S duodeno-ileal bypass. The choice is individual and rests on BMI, related conditions and your goals. The two procedures most patients ask about are the sleeve and the bypass.
In a sleeve gastrectomy, stomach volume is reduced, so you feel full quickly. It is usually considered for obesity without marked reflux. In a gastric bypass, stomach volume is reduced and the path of the food is changed. It is usually considered when obesity comes with diabetes or reflux, and it aims at weight loss with better metabolism. Both are done under general anaesthesia, with 1 to 5 days under observation afterwards. How long you stay depends on how complex the operation was and how you feel.
The operation uses a laparoscopic technique, through 4 small punctures of 5 to 15 mm. Cosmetic sutures are placed, so after healing the marks become almost invisible. Final weight results are reached 18 to 24 months after surgery. This is a gradual process and not something that appears in a few weeks.
Not everyone is suitable. The contraindications are:
- age under 18
- malignant tumours
- pregnancy
- blood clotting disorders
- severe chronic and mental illness
- acute illness or flare-ups of chronic disease
- less than six months since breastfeeding ended
If one of these applies to you, tell the coordinator in the first message. The doctor will decide at the consultation whether surgery can be considered, and when.
Before any date is set, you send photos and basic details on WhatsApp or Telegram. You receive a free assessment, and the plan is confirmed before anything is booked. The tests that follow are blood and urine tests, an ECG, an ultrasound, a gastroscopy and visits to specialists. The doctor gives you the exact list at the consultation.
Diet after bariatric surgery moves in stages from liquid to soft to solid food. The main focus is protein, with high-calorie and fatty food restricted. High-calorie drinks matter too, because avoiding them is one of the habits that protects the result. We do not have sourced facts about specific Dutch dishes or local food habits, so we will not make claims about them. What the facts do show is the setting in which Utrecht residents will rebuild their routine.
About 52.5% of households in Utrecht are single-person households. For many patients this means planning meals for one person. They decide what goes into the basket, what stays in the fridge and when to eat, without negotiating with anyone. A person living with a spouse or flatmates may need a short conversation at home so that everyone understands the new portions and the new rhythm.
Movement is easy to build into daily life here. The city's own figures say 51% of journeys within Utrecht are made by bicycle, more than any other mode, and the bicycle parking station by Central Station holds 12,500 bicycles. Swimming is fine from 30 days after surgery. Other exercise is added gradually as weight drops. In practice, an easy ride on a flat route (the city lies at an elevation of about 5 m) is a natural way to add activity once the doctor agrees. Your doctor decides the pace, not the calendar or the bike path.
For those who like organised sport, SV Kampong has 4,500 members and is described as the largest amateur sports club in the Netherlands. Joining anything like that is a later step, after your doctor confirms the load is suitable. Ask at the follow-up check what your body can take at each stage.
Vitamins are essential after the operation. Digestive anatomy changes, so the body absorbs certain nutrients less well. Regular vitamin and mineral supplements become a lasting part of a patient's life. Include them in your daily routine from the first week, in the same way as your meals.
Distance is not a problem for follow-up. The support package runs to 12 months. One coordinator is with you from day one, and a remote progress check is done by photos. After discharge you receive advice on diet and recovery. Scheduled check-ups look at your well-being, weight and test results. Everything happens by messages, and coordinators answer 24/7 on WhatsApp and Telegram.
Three coordinators share the work. One answers questions before the first consultation and helps with choosing a date. One supports preparation for surgery and keeps in touch during your stay. One stays in contact while you recover and books your follow-ups with the doctor. For a person in Utrecht, that means the same chat window is used from the first message until the final check-up.
Recovery depends on your activity. For office work, expect to return after 2 to 4 weeks. Physical work usually needs about 1.5 months. Holidays are best planned from a month after surgery. If your job is physically demanding, discuss it with the doctor before the date is fixed, so the plan is realistic.
Pregnancy after bariatric surgery can happen, though doctors advise waiting at least 12 to 18 months. In that period the body becomes stable, weight reaches target values and nutritional status normalises. For couples in Utrecht who are planning a family, this is worth raising at the first consultation.
Weight regain after surgery is possible. It is very unlikely if you follow the doctor's advice. Proper eating, avoiding high-calorie drinks and regular follow-up with our specialists are the key.
Dutch public holidays are 1 January, Easter Sunday and Monday, King's Day on 27 April, Liberation Day on 5 May, Ascension, Whit Sunday and Monday, and 25 and 26 December. Good Friday is not a mandatory paid holiday. If you plan the operation around work, these days help you extend a period of rest without using extra leave. The coordinator will fit the date to your schedule, since the consultation is free and nothing is booked until you confirm.
Weather affects how comfortable your recovery is. At the De Bilt station, the 1991-2020 normals show the coldest months as January (mean maximum 6.1 °C, minimum 0.9 °C), February (7.0 °C and 0.7 °C) and December (6.7 °C and 1.6 °C). The city has about 25 snow days a year, 6 each in January and February and 5 in December. Humidity averages 82% a year and reaches 89% in November and December. Sunshine is 55.5 hours in December and 66.6 hours in January. The warmest months are July (mean maximum 23.1 °C, minimum 13.0 °C) and August (22.9 °C and 12.5 °C), with sunshine of 213.9 hours in July and 217.5 hours in May. Rain is steady through the year, with 849.7 mm on 131 days of at least 1 mm. April is the driest month at 41.1 mm.
None of this changes the medical plan. It matters for the gentle walking and cycling your doctor recommends, which are easier in dry, mild weeks. A recovery in the dark, damp weeks of November and December can feel slower even when your healing is normal. Plan indoor activity and have your protein-rich food stocked before you come home.
The city's calendar also offers distractions that need effort. Le Guess Who? runs for four days in mid-November in venues across the city. The Netherlands Film Festival is held every year in September and October. These are fine for later weeks, but the first days after discharge belong to rest and the doctor's instructions.
Zorginstituut Nederland sets the criteria for the basic package: a BMI above 40, a BMI of 35 to 40 with a comorbidity, or type 2 diabetes with a BMI of 30 or more. A lifestyle programme (GLI) is typically tried first. Our doctor uses a similar medical logic, a BMI above 40 or above 35 with related conditions, and may consider lower values when non-surgical methods have not worked. At the consultation you will hear which category your numbers fall into.
No. The consultation is a separate medical opinion. It does not enrol you in, remove you from or speed up any insurer's procedure. If you are following the GLI route or waiting for a hospital decision, you can continue with it. Talk to your insurer about prior approval (machtiging) if you wish to claim for covered care.
The eigen risico is the part of covered care costs that you pay yourself each year before insurance takes over. It is set annually, and GP care is exempt. Zorginstituut Nederland notes that covered plastic surgery has no co-payment but is subject to this deductible. Ask your insurer how it applies to your situation, because we cannot interpret an individual policy.
Age under 18 is a contraindication for the procedures described in our medical text, so we do not offer them to minors. In the Netherlands, bariatric surgery for adolescents aged 13 to 18 has been covered by basic insurance since 26 May 2026. It applies after unsuccessful lifestyle treatment, with a BMI above 40 or 35 to 40 with a related disease. The institute expects only 10 to 20 young people a year to qualify, so a teenager should speak first to the family doctor.
About 52.5% of households in Utrecht are single-person households. Living alone means you control the shopping and portions, but nobody else reminds you about protein, vitamins or avoiding high-calorie drinks. Your coordinator reminds you about tests and check-ups, and the doctor explains the stages from liquid to soft to solid food. If you share a home with a spouse or flatmates, it helps to explain the new routine early.
Cycling is the main mode of transport in Utrecht, with 51% of journeys made that way. Our medical text gives a few fixed points. Office work is possible after 2 to 4 weeks, physical work after about 1.5 months, and swimming after 30 days. Other exercise is added gradually as weight drops. Ask the doctor about cycling specifically, because it depends on your recovery and the type of operation.
Not the medical plan, but they can affect comfort and activity. Utrecht has about 25 snow days a year, humidity of 89% in November and December and little sunshine in December and January. Gentle walking or cycling is easier in dry, mild weeks. If your date falls in winter, stock suitable food beforehand and plan indoor movement. The hospital stay of 1 to 5 days under observation and the 12 months of remote follow-up stay the same.
Pregnancy can happen after bariatric surgery, but doctors advise waiting at least 12 to 18 months while the body stabilises, weight reaches target values and nutritional status normalises. Final results are reached 18 to 24 months after surgery. Tell your coordinator about your plans so the follow-up checks and vitamin supplements can be arranged with this in mind.
