The process
Your agreed treatment plan, monitoring during your hospital stay and support for a year.
1The doctor assesses your health, discusses your goals and orders the tests needed to choose the right bariatric surgery method.
2Your surgery date is reserved once the deposit is paid — by card at the clinic or by online bank transfer. The contract for medical services fixes the terms
3You see the specialists and have blood and urine tests, an ECG, an ultrasound and a gastroscopy before surgery. The doctor gives you the precise list at the consultation.
4The surgeon does the bariatric operation under general anaesthesia by the method chosen. After surgery, the patient stays under the medical team's monitoring.
5After the operation you stay in hospital under doctors' supervision for 1–3 to 4–5 days, depending on the complexity of the operation and how you feel.
6After discharge you are given recommendations on diet and recovery. Planned check-ups track how you feel, your weight and test results. The clinic team supports you for a year.

FAQ
Yes, bariatric surgery is the medical term for it. At City Medical Centre the main methods are sleeve gastrectomy (gastric sleeve) and gastric bypass; the surgeon chooses the method by your BMI and health.
Usually a BMI over 40, or over 35 with related health conditions. The surgeon confirms whether surgery suits you at the consultation.
At the clinic, experienced bariatric surgeons perform the bariatric operations:

Surgery is prescribed only when clear criteria are met
Obesity is graded mainly by BMI, calculated as body weight (kg) over height squared (m²). A BMI above 40 usually justifies surgery, as does a BMI above 35 with serious related conditions. In certain cases surgery is considered at lower values too, if approaches without surgery have not succeeded.
These two are frequently confused, although their goals differ at the core. Bariatric surgery is a medical treatment of obesity and related diseases that changes the workings of the digestive tract, targeting the causes of excess weight and metabolism. Plastic surgery corrects outer body contours; it does not treat obesity or change metabolism.
City Medical Centre performs four main types of bariatric surgery: sleeve gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, mini gastric bypass (MGB) and SADI-S duodeno-ileal bypass. Each method is chosen individually based on BMI, related conditions and the patient's goals.
Using modern laparoscopic technique, we perform the operation via 4 small punctures of 5 to 15 mm. Cosmetic sutures are placed, leaving marks that are nearly invisible after healing.
Recovery varies with your activities. Office work: after 2–4 weeks. Physical work: after 1.5 months. Sport and activity: swimming is permitted after 30 days; other exercise is added gradually as weight decreases. Travel and holidays: best scheduled at least a month after surgery.
You move through diet stages from liquid food to soft and finally solid. Protein comes first, and high-calorie, fatty food is restricted.
After bariatric surgery pregnancy is possible, yet doctors recommend at least 12–18 months of waiting. Meanwhile the body stabilizes, weight arrives at target values and nutritional status normalizes.
Yes, bariatric surgery makes vitamins a must. Since digestive anatomy is changed, absorption of some nutrients drops, and regular vitamin and mineral supplements become permanent in the patient's life.
Weight regain is possible after bariatric surgery but very unlikely provided you follow the doctor's advice. Eat properly, avoid high-calorie drinks and keep up regular follow-up with City Medical Centre specialists.

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass creates a small 50–70 ml pouch at the top of the stomach and connects it straight to the small intestine. It is considered the gold standard for a BMI over 45–50 with type 2 diabetes, bringing excess weight loss of 75–85%. Anyone researching bypass in Malmo should know that it requires lifelong vitamin and mineral supplements.
Preparation is practical. Two to four weeks before surgery, cut fast carbohydrates and fats; a month before, quit smoking, reduce physical activity and avoid stress. The day before, switch to light meals, with the last light meal in the evening and last fluids 3–4 hours before the operation. The same plan applies to everyone preparing for bariatric surgery in Malmo.
A permanent team — not a duty shift — handles your case, and the whole package is transparent. Included are the operation, 24/7 care in the ward, meals, nursing and a personal coordinator from day one, plus support throughout the first year. Malmo patients also get a contractual result guarantee. Book a free consultation to discuss your situation.

The decision to have bariatric surgery was not easy for me. I worried both about the operation itself and about how my life would change afterwards. At the consultation Andrey Georgievich explained everything in detail, so little by little my fear turned into confidence. What matters most to me now is the result and the chance to treat my health and lifestyle differently.

Malmo municipality had 367,924 inhabitants at the end of 2025, which makes it the third largest municipality in Sweden. The urban area holds roughly 339,000 people and the wider metropolitan area about 780,000. At this scale, many residents with severe obesity are looking at the same options: a public pathway with criteria and queues, or a planned procedure arranged on their own terms. This block explains how the two fit together for someone living in Skane.
The public health information service 1177 describes the usual criteria for obesity operations, and it notes that regions differ. The patient is 18 or older. The BMI is over 40, or over 35 together with a weight-related disease. There have also been serious earlier attempts to lose weight. A specialist doctor decides after an individual assessment, and people over 60 may be excluded. These thresholds are very close to what our own consultation uses. Bariatric surgery is generally justified at a BMI above 40, or above 35 when serious related conditions are present, and sometimes it is considered at lower values when non-surgical methods have not worked.
BMI is simple to calculate: body weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. If you have never done it, do it before the first message, so that the conversation with the coordinator starts from real numbers. The conditions that bariatric surgery helps with include type 2 diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnoea, fatty liver disease, joint disease, varicose veins and reproductive health problems. If you already carry one of these diagnoses, mention it at once, because it can move you from the "over 40" group into the "over 35" group.
Malmo also has a non-surgical obesity clinic, described by 1177 as a programme for adults aged 18 and over. It accepts people with a BMI of 35 or more for at least five years, or a BMI of 30 or more for five years together with a complicating disease such as type 2 diabetes or sleep apnoea, after repeated weight-loss attempts. This is a treatment path built on lifestyle and medical support rather than an operation. Many people use it first, and the history it creates (documented attempts, measurements over time) is useful at any later consultation.
Our online consultation does not replace that path and does not compete with it. It gives you a second, fast assessment: you send photos and basic data on WhatsApp or Telegram, the doctor gives an opinion on whether surgery suits you, and you decide with no obligation. The first consultation is free, and nothing is booked before you confirm the plan.
Sweden has a national rule for waiting called 0-3-90-90. In plain terms: contact with primary care the same day, a medical assessment within three days, a specialist appointment within 90 days, and treatment within 90 days of the treatment decision. Regions may set shorter limits. Two things matter for someone considering weight-loss surgery. First, the treatment clock starts only after a decision to treat, so the stretch before that decision, with referrals, programmes and assessments, can be much longer than the headline numbers suggest. Second, the rule describes the maximum time for care that the system has agreed to provide, so it says nothing about people who are told they do not meet the criteria.
Patient fees in Skane follow a clear logic. There is a fixed fee per visit at a health centre or specialist outpatient clinic, a higher one at the emergency department, and a ceiling over twelve months. The ceiling is part of the national outpatient high-cost protection. There is no fee for those under 20 or from age 85. Certificates, vaccinations and daily fees for inpatient stays are usually not included in that protection. I mention this deliberately, because it tells you which costs the protection will not absorb. If you plan to ask for a medical certificate or an extra document in connection with your weight-loss plan, check beforehand whether it is covered.
Another boundary is described by 1177 for the period after significant weight loss. Cosmetic surgery such as removal of excess skin is most often paid for by the patient at a private plastic-surgery provider. Removal for medical reasons, for example hygiene problems or eczema, is handled differently depending on the region. This is worth knowing at the start, because the loose skin after large weight loss is one of the most common surprises for patients. Our own distinction is the same in spirit: bariatric surgery is medical treatment of obesity and related illness, changing the way the digestive tract works, while plastic surgery reshapes the outer contours of the body and neither treats obesity nor affects metabolism. Plan the two as separate steps, with separate timing.
Practical advice for a resident of Malmo: keep a simple folder with your weight history, the dates and results of any programme you took part in, and the names of your diagnoses. Whether you later go through the public system or continue with us, the same folder shortens every conversation.
We carry out four main types of bariatric surgery: sleeve gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, mini gastric bypass (MGB) and SADI-S duodeno-ileal bypass. The choice is individual and depends on BMI, related conditions and your goals. The two procedures most patients ask about are the first two.
Sleeve gastrectomy reduces stomach volume. Its main goal is weight loss and a quick feeling of fullness, and it is usually chosen for obesity without marked reflux. Gastric bypass reduces stomach volume and also changes the path of the food. It aims at weight loss and better metabolism, and it is usually chosen for obesity with diabetes or reflux. Both are done under general anaesthesia, with a hospital stay of 1–5 days under observation. Depending on complexity and how you feel, the stay lasts from 1–3 to 4–5 days.
The operation is laparoscopic, through 4 small punctures of 5 to 15 mm. Cosmetic sutures are placed, so once healed the marks become almost invisible. All benefits and recovery periods are averages for guidance only; the extent of surgery and recovery vary with your anatomy and individual traits, and the doctor confirms them at the consultation.
Before the operation you have blood and urine tests, an ECG, an ultrasound and a gastroscopy, and you see the specialists. The doctor gives you the exact list during the consultation. Many of these tests are routine and can be arranged through a primary care contact, which in Sweden usually starts with your health centre. Ask the coordinator to explain which results should be sent to us and in which format, so that nothing is repeated unnecessarily.
There are also situations where surgery is not advised: age under 18, malignant tumours, pregnancy, blood clotting disorders, severe chronic and mental illness, acute illness or flare-ups of chronic disease, and less than six months since breastfeeding ended. If you are unsure which column describes you, the coordinator will tell you in the first conversation. It is better to know early than to prepare for a procedure that the doctor will then postpone.
After the operation, diet moves in stages from liquid to soft to solid food. The main focus is protein and restricting high-calorie, fatty food. Regular vitamin and mineral supplements become a lasting part of life, because the body absorbs some nutrients less well once the anatomy has changed. Avoiding high-calorie drinks matters as much as what is on the plate, and regular follow-up is one of the keys to keeping the result.
The calendar of a big city is where habits are tested. Malmofestivalen takes place in the third week of August and has done every year since 1985. Film events fall in March (BUFF, the children's and youth film festival) and September (Nordisk Panorama), and the Nordic Game conference runs in April or May. Sweden's public holidays also shape the year: 1 January, 6 January, Good Friday, Easter, 1 May, Ascension, Pentecost, National Day on 6 June, Midsummer Day (a Saturday between 20 and 26 June), All Saints' Day and 25–26 December. Midsummer Eve, Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve are de facto full days off. These are the days when meals are long and social, so it is worth planning your first holiday after surgery in advance, preferably with a simple agreement about portions and drinks rather than an attempt to avoid the table.
Movement is easier here than in many places. Malmo has 410 km of cycle paths. English-language sources say about 40% of commuting is by bicycle, while Swedish sources give 30% of trips, so treat the exact share with caution. The point for recovery is practical: the city has infrastructure for gentle, regular activity. Our guidance on activity is: swimming is fine after 30 days, and other exercise is added gradually as weight drops. Walking is the natural first step, and cycling on level routes can follow once the doctor agrees. Physical work usually resumes after 1.5 months, and office work after 2–4 weeks.
Sport can also be motivation of another kind. Malmo FF plays in Allsvenskan and reached the 1979 European Cup final, FC Rosengard has won the women's league 10 times, and the Malmo Redhawks play in the SHL ice hockey league. Watching is not training, but a season ticket and a fixed evening out give a rhythm that many people find helpful: a meal planned before, a walk afterwards, a drink that is not sugary. Use these anchors consciously rather than leaving them to chance.
Malmo lies in Skane County on the Oresund strait, at an elevation of only 12 m, and the climate is mild and changeable. For 1991–2018 the mean daily maximum in July is 23.2 °C and the minimum 13.8 °C. August is 22.3 °C and 13.7 °C. The annual mean maximum is 12.7 °C and the minimum 5.7 °C. January has a mean maximum of 2.9 °C and a minimum of −1.4 °C, and February is 3.0 °C and −1.5 °C. December is a little milder at 4.8 °C and 0.7 °C. Snowfall occurs mainly from December to March, snow cover is brief, and some winters have none.
What does this mean for recovery? In winter, short daily walks are still realistic because deep snow is rare, but December is dark: sunshine is only 33.1 hours in the month, against 274.4 hours in May, 271.5 in June and 272.1 in July. Over the year the city gets 1,917.7 hours of sunshine and relative humidity of 80.7%. If your recovery weeks fall in the dark months, plan a fixed time for a daytime walk, and put reminders for fluids, protein and supplements in your phone so that the low-light season does not loosen your routine. Annual precipitation is 673.2 mm, with August the wettest month at 86.3 mm and April the driest at 30.0 mm, so a waterproof layer is more useful than heavy winter clothing.
Summer offers its own aids. Ribersborg ("Ribban") is a man-made shallow beach along the coast south-west of the harbour, with an open-air bath that opened in the 1890s. The Scaniaparken and Daniaparken boardwalk in the Western Harbour is popular for summer bathing. Since swimming is fine after 30 days, a late-summer date can make these places a goal for your first month. Do not rush into cold water if you feel weak; build up the distance on land first.
Think also about the time frame of the result. The final result comes 18–24 months after the operation. That is a long horizon, and several seasons will pass. Pregnancy after bariatric surgery can happen, but doctors advise holding off at least 12–18 months, while the body stabilises and nutritional status normalises.
The package includes support for 12 months, from preparation to the end of the first year. One coordinator is with you from the first message, and progress is checked remotely by photos. After discharge you receive advice on diet and recovery and scheduled check-ups of your well-being, weight and test results. Coordinators answer round the clock on WhatsApp and Telegram, which means a question about a symptom or a meal does not have to wait for the next appointment slot.
Online follow-up suits a city like Malmo, where many people work in education, research and creative fields. Malmo University was established in 1998 and had about 24,000 students and 1,600 employees in 2014. Lund University runs parts of its medical faculty and several arts academies in the city, and the UN World Maritime University is also here. Irregular timetables, teaching blocks and project deadlines are common in such environments, and a message with a photo and a short question fits into them more easily than a fixed appointment. Still, remote follow-up has limits, and it is better to know them. Blood tests have to be taken locally, and results then sent to us. If something feels wrong, such as persistent pain, repeated vomiting or fever, contact emergency care in Sweden at once and tell the coordinator afterwards. Bring the discharge papers and the description of your operation to any health provider you meet, so that they know the anatomy has changed.
Weight regain after bariatric surgery is possible, but it is very unlikely if you follow the doctor's advice. The elements are proper eating, avoiding high-calorie drinks, supplements and regular follow-up. The coordinator can book your follow-up visits and remind you about tests and check-ups. A good habit is to send your photos on the same day each month, in the same light and clothing, so that changes are comparable.
Yes. The consultation is free and has no obligation, so it can run alongside whatever you are doing with your health centre or a programme such as the obesity clinic in Malmo. Many patients use it to compare their situation with the criteria described by 1177 and to understand the options before deciding anything.
1177 lists age 18 or older, a BMI over 40 or over 35 with a weight-related disease, and serious earlier weight-loss attempts, with a specialist deciding after an individual assessment and regions differing in practice. Our consultation uses very similar thresholds: generally a BMI above 40, or above 35 when serious related conditions are present, and sometimes lower values when non-surgical methods have not worked. The doctor confirms it in each case.
The national rule 0-3-90-90 sets maximum times: same-day contact with primary care, an assessment within three days, a specialist appointment within 90 days and treatment within 90 days of the treatment decision. Regions may set shorter limits. It applies to care within the public system. With us, dates are agreed with you in the plan and fixed in the contract before anything is booked.
Not necessarily. The ceiling protects against high costs for outpatient visits over twelve months, but 1177 says certificates, vaccinations and inpatient daily fees are usually not included. Ask the health provider in advance what is covered, and ask our coordinator which documents you actually need, so you do not pay for papers that nobody requires.
According to 1177, cosmetic removal of excess skin is most often paid by the patient at a private plastic-surgery provider, while removal for medical reasons such as hygiene problems or eczema is handled differently depending on the region. Bariatric surgery treats obesity and does not reshape the body contours, so the two are planned separately. Discuss your expectations with the coordinator early.
Office work is usually possible after 2–4 weeks, and physical work after 1.5 months. Swimming is fine after 30 days, and other exercise is added gradually as weight drops. The doctor adjusts this to your condition, so describe your usual activity during the consultation. In a city with 410 km of cycle paths, walking first and level cycling later is a natural progression.
Not medically, but it affects routine. December has only 33.1 hours of sunshine, against 274.4 in May, and snow cover is brief or absent in some winters. Fix a daytime walk, set reminders for fluids, protein and supplements, and send your monthly progress photos in consistent light. The coordinator is available round the clock if you need to ask something.
Diet moves in stages from liquid to soft to solid food, with protein first and high-calorie, fatty food restricted. Holidays such as Midsummer, Christmas Eve and events like Malmofestivalen in August bring long meals and drinks, so plan portions in advance and avoid high-calorie drinks. Ask the coordinator to help set a simple plan for your first such occasion.
