A transplant suits not everyone

When surgery is not needed in your case, the doctor will say so at the consultation — and you will not waste your money. Below are the conditions in which a transplant really works.

A hair transplant is more than the scalp. The same grafts from the back of the head, the same FUE method — only the area changes.

Beard transplant

FUE method, no incisions or stitches

A surgeon marking the beard line before a transplant at City Medical Centre

Grafts are taken from the donor area at the back of the head and moved through micro-punctures of about 1 mm — no scars are left. The doctor discusses the shape with you before the operation, taking your facial features into account. Transplanted hair grows for life: the beard can be trimmed and styled as usual.

Eyebrow transplant

At the initial consultation the surgeon draws the shape of the eyebrow: you look through references together and your facial features shape the design. The hairs are implanted at the right angle, so the eyebrows look natural. It also helps where hairs stopped growing after years of plucking.

I am sharing my experience, because before the operation I went through a pile of reviews myself and was looking for real stories. I had a beard transplant six months ago. Honestly, in the first days after the procedure I felt a little jittery: my face looked unfamiliar, there was slight swelling and small scabs. In the first couple of months the hair partly fell out, as the doctor had warned. But now the result truly makes me very happy) From about the 4th month active, even growth began. The transplanted hair took very well, the beard now looks as natural as possible, no bald patches are left. The beard became much thicker and denser, with the shape I had thought about for a long time. All in all, I recommend the clinic, the doctor was polite and explained everything 👍 The result is definitely worth it!

Frequent questions

Here is what people
ask before booking

People often say hair implants, but no artificial hair is used. In a hair transplant the doctor moves your own follicles (grafts) from the donor area to thinning or bald areas using FUE or DHI.

City Medical Centre doctors

Yes — City Medical Centre regularly treats patients from other cities and countries, starting with an online consultation.

Prices start at $2,200 (≈ GHS 25,500) for FUE, $2,500 (≈ GHS 29,000) for DHI, and $2,700 (≈ GHS 31,500) for the combined method. Your final price is set after a free graft count and locked into the contract.

It is a one-day procedure — you leave for home right after.

It helps with stable pattern hair loss and a receding hairline when there are enough donor grafts. Some types of alopecia need treatment first; the doctor checks this at the consultation.

It's a painless procedure, carried out under local anaesthesia.

With FUE, grafts are taken by tweezer with no incisions. With DHI, grafts are implanted directly using a Choi pen, without pre-made channels. The combined method mixes FUE harvesting with DHI implantation.

Graft count is calculated by the doctor at no cost, based on an assessment of your donor zone.

Healing runs 0–10 days, followed by normal hair shedding at 2–4 weeks. Growth kicks in at 3–4 months, thickens by 6–9 months, and reaches its final result at 12–18 months.

A contract-backed, lifetime guarantee of hair growth comes with every procedure.

For residents of Kumasi: how the transplant actually works

Everything a resident of Kumasi needs to know about the operation fits in a line: FUE and DHI, no cuts, no stitches, local anaesthesia, one day. Graft survival is 98-100 %, and a price from $2,200 (≈ GHS 25,500) is fixed in the contract after a free graft count.

The free online consultation is the whole first step in Kumasi: send photos of the thinning area, and the doctor looks at them and counts how many grafts are needed. The clinic is in touch 24/7, so the exchange stays convenient.

Give it 0-10 days to heal and 2-4 weeks for the transplanted hairs to shed, which is normal, then 3-4 months to growth, 6-9 to density and 12-18 to the final result. Check-ups are scheduled at 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months with photo tracking by a personal coordinator and a lifetime growth guarantee.

How we prepare and review medical content · Medical disclaimer

Photos first, paperwork second

Kumasi counted 443,981 people inside the city limits at the 2021 census, and the wider metropolitan area is estimated at 3,490,030 for the same year. Somewhere in those numbers is a man or a woman who has been looking at a thinning crown or a receding temple for years and has never found out what an operation would actually involve. The simplest way to find out is to begin with a handful of photographs rather than a visit.

Take pictures of the thinning area in daylight from the front, the top, both sides and the back, because the back of the head is where the donor grafts come from. Write down, in a few lines, when the loss started, whether anyone in your family has similar patterns, and which medicines you use. Then send the set to a coordinator in WhatsApp or Telegram. The coordinators answer at any hour, so a message sent after work in Kumasi can be answered while the evening is still young.

A doctor receives the photographs, looks at the thinning and tells you whether a transplant is likely to help. That first assessment is free, it is held online, and it reserves nothing. The same stage includes a count of the grafts you would need, worked out from the donor area, and the figure that follows is written into the contract before anything else happens.

Be prepared for an honest no. The doctor has no interest in booking an operation that something else would serve better. Androgenetic or diffuse thinning, and bald areas with a receding front, are where a transplant helps. Shedding after an illness, shedding tied to hormones, damage from a burn or injury, patchy alopecia and too little density in the donor zone sit on the other side of the line.

FUE, DHI or both: the questions that separate them

Your choice lies among FUE, DHI and a blend of the two. In FUE the surgeon removes grafts one by one with forceps, and no incisions or stitches are needed. In DHI the pen used for implantation (a Choi implanter) sets each graft directly, so the recipient channels are not cut beforehand. The combined protocol removes grafts the FUE way and places them with the pen. For FUE the clinic gives graft survival as 98 to 100 percent, an average for guidance: the exact figure depends on the transplant area and on the individual, and the doctor sets it out in person.

A comparison is easier when you ask the same short list of questions about each method. Which one does the doctor propose for your pattern, and for what reason? Why was it chosen over the other two? Does the plan treat only the front, or also the crown? What will the donor area look like in the first weeks? A reply that names your pattern, your donor zone and the number of grafts is a real reply. A reply that only repeats the name of a technique is not.

Everything happens within one day. Numbing is local, and you head home once the operation is done. Tell the doctor early about any of the following, since each one is a contraindication: intolerance to anaesthetics, epilepsy, a serious heart condition, diabetes, a pacemaker, HIV or hepatitis B or C, a pulmonary embolism in the past, cancer, trichotillomania, body dysmorphic disorder, or being younger than eighteen.

What a written quotation should contain

Payment is arranged through a contract for medical services. A deposit holds the date, by card at the clinic or online, and the terms are written down. Request the draft ahead of time, go through it with a pen when nobody is hovering, and return every sentence you do not understand with a question beside it.

Next, find the list of inclusions. The clinic lists dressings and healing checks, a plan for looking after the donor and recipient areas, guidance on washing, sleeping and covering your head, a plan for returning to sport and normal hair care, direct contact with your coordinator with photos as things change, and check-ups at 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months. Compare your copy of the quotation with this list line by line. An absent line is a prompt for a message, and the reply should be kept.

The graft count deserves its own line. Ask where the number comes from, which area of the scalp it covers, and what the doctor expects the density to look like once everything has grown. Ask what happens if you want a second session later, and how the donor area is judged before that.

Do not treat the price as the whole comparison. Two quotations can look far apart because one counts fewer grafts, leaves out the follow-up visits or says nothing about instalments. Put both on one sheet with identical rows, and fill each cell from the written answer.

The first ten days are for healing: crusts form and drop off while the swelling settles. Somewhere in weeks two to four the new hairs fall out. That looks alarming but is expected, because the follicles remain in place. New hair appears from about month three or four, thickens between months six and nine, and the finished picture is judged between twelve and eighteen months. Mark each of those windows on a calendar when you book, so that a quiet month does not feel like a failed one.

Plan your photographs around those points. Take a baseline set on the evening before the operation, then repeat it at the same angles and in the same light at each follow-up. Your coordinator receives the pictures, and the doctor sees the progress in sequence rather than from memory. If you are tempted to compare yourself with someone's picture at month two, remember that the shedding stage is part of the plan.

Put the post-operative checks into the calendar when you book. They fall at 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months, and between them you can write to your coordinator whenever something changes. Keep a note of what the doctor told you at each visit, including advice on washing, sleeping position and head covering, so that you do not rely on recollection.

Keep one folder with the contract, the graft count and every photograph, and note each question the moment it occurs to you.

Checking a practitioner and a facility in Ghana

Ghana has a statutory regulator for doctors. The Medical and Dental Council was established under the Health Professions Regulatory Bodies Act, 2013 (Act 857) and has the task of setting standards for the training and practice of medicine and dentistry. Its website has a Practitioner Verification page: you choose the register type, type the first and last name without titles, and the results appear as you type. The council also publishes a specialist register and a complaint form, and its site states that engaging a non-registered practitioner is an offence under section 48 of Act 857.

Facilities are licensed separately. Under the Health Institutions and Facilities Act, 2011 (Act 829), the Health Facilities Regulatory Agency licenses public and private health care facilities, approves licence applications, carries out inspections and sets minimum equipment and staffing. A full check therefore asks two things: is the doctor on the register, and does the facility hold a licence. Ask the coordinator who will examine and operate, and run that name through the verification page yourself.

On cost cover, the National Health Insurance Scheme lists cosmetic surgeries and aesthetic treatment among the exclusions from its benefit package; reconstructive surgery, for example for burn patients, is the stated exception. Hair transplants are not named in that list, so whether yours would be covered is a question for the scheme. Ask before assuming either way.

What should my photographs show?

The thinning area from the front, top, both sides and back, taken in daylight, together with a short note on when the loss began and which medicines you take. The back of the head matters because the grafts come from there.

Can I get a first opinion without any commitment?

Yes. The assessment is free and online, reserves no date and carries no obligation. Photos sent in a messenger reach a doctor, who says whether a transplant would help.

How do I find out whether my doctor is registered in Ghana?

Open the Practitioner Verification page of the Medical and Dental Council, choose the register type, type the first and last name without titles and read the result. Complaints go through the council's form.

Does the Ghanaian health insurance scheme pay for a transplant?

The National Health Insurance Scheme excludes cosmetic surgeries and aesthetic treatment from its benefits. Hair transplants are not named in the list, so ask the scheme about your own case.

What licence should a facility hold?

The Health Facilities Regulatory Agency licenses public and private health care facilities under Act 829. Ask the clinic for its licence details and check them next to the doctor's registration.

Who should be told about my other illnesses?

The doctor, at the first contact. Epilepsy, diabetes, serious heart conditions, a pacemaker, HIV or hepatitis, a previous pulmonary embolism and intolerance to anaesthetics are all on the contraindication list.

Which numbers belong in my follow-up notes?

The dates of the checks at 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months, the graft count from the consultation and the photographs taken at each visit.
