Beard transplant

Grafts are taken from the donor area at the back of the head and go in through micro-punctures of about 1 mm — no scars are left. I am sharing my experience, because before the operation I went through a pile of reviews myself and was looking for real stories. I had a beard transplant six months ago. Honestly, in the first days after the procedure I felt a little jittery: my face looked unfamiliar, there was slight swelling and small scabs. In the first couple of months the hair partly fell out, as the doctor had warned. But now the result truly makes me very happy) From about the 4th month active, even growth began. The transplanted hair took very well, the beard now looks as natural as possible, no bald patches are left. The beard became much thicker and denser, with the shape I had thought about for a long time. All in all, I recommend the clinic, the doctor was polite and explained everything 👍 The result is definitely worth it!

The usual queries

We tell what people
ask before booking

People often say hair implants, but no artificial hair is used. In a hair transplant the doctor moves your own follicles (grafts) from the donor area to thinning or bald areas using FUE or DHI.

City Medical Centre doctors

Yes, they can. City Medical Centre is open to anyone, in any city and in any country, and online consulting comes before any booking.

FUE: $2,200 (≈ €2,000). DHI: $2,500 (≈ €2,250). Combined: $2,700 (≈ €2,450). A free consultation and graft count gives you the final, contract-fixed price with no hidden extras.

The procedure runs across one day, and you are home that night.

It helps with stable pattern hair loss and a receding hairline when there are enough donor grafts. Some types of alopecia need treatment first; the doctor checks this at the consultation.

No — the procedure is done under local anaesthesia and is painless.

FUE is cut-free graft extraction by tweezer. DHI is direct implantation with a Choi pen, skipping channel-making. The combined technique takes grafts by FUE and places them using the DHI method.

That number is individual. It is calculated at no cost by the doctor, who looks at how much donor hair exists.

Healing takes 0–10 days. Transplanted hair sheds at 2–4 weeks, which is normal. New growth starts at 3–4 months, with noticeable density at 6–9 months and the final result at 12–18 months.

The clinic provides a lifetime guarantee on hair growth, stated in the contract.

How patients in Bonn go through a hair transplant

The choice for a patient in Bonn lies between FUE and DHI, and either way the scalp is not cut, nothing has to be stitched, only local anaesthesia is used, and one day is all the operation takes.

Begin from your own sofa if you are in Bonn. The online consultation is free of charge, the doctor studies pictures of the thinning area and gives a plain answer on whether a transplant helps. Contact is open 24/7.

It heals within 0-10 days, the transplanted hairs shed at 2-4 weeks and this is the norm, growth appears at 3-4 months, density at 6-9 and the final result at 12-18. Along the way there are check-ups at 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months, photo tracking with a personal coordinator and a lifetime growth guarantee.

Sun, rain and cold on the scalp: what the Rhine valley climate asks of a transplant

Bonn lies on the Rhine, about 24 km south-southeast of Cologne, in the southernmost part of the Rhine-Ruhr region. Almost three-quarters of the city is on the left bank, and the Siebengebirge rises to the south-east. The city sits at roughly 60 m above sea level, so there is no mountain exposure to plan around. The annual mean temperature is 11.1 °C. That is a moderate, changeable climate, and it matters for hair restoration because the scalp, and the skin that is healing after FUE or DHI, meets all four seasons within the first year.

The summer months bring the most direct exposure. Sunshine averages 4.5 hours a day across the year, but from May to August it reaches about 7 hours a day. July is the warmest month, with a mean daily maximum of 25.3 °C, and the record is 40.3 °C. Those figures describe an average July day and an extreme one. For a patient in the early recovery period, the practical point is that the treated areas, both the recipient zone and the donor zone at the back of the head, should not be left to the sun without a plan. The care plan that comes with the procedure includes advice on headwear. The doctor and coordinator can tell you exactly what is suitable at each stage, so you do not have to guess.

Winter is the opposite situation. In January the mean daily maximum is 5.4 °C and the mean temperature is 3.0 °C. The mean daily minimum in January and February is 0.4–0.5 °C. Sunshine drops to about 1 hour a day in December and about 2 hours in January and November. A cold, dim season brings its own questions: what can be worn on the head, how tight it may be, and when it is acceptable. These are not questions to settle by trial and error. Send a photo of the planned headwear to your coordinator on WhatsApp or Telegram and ask whether it fits the current stage of healing.

A growth calendar built from a November start

The service follows a clear sequence of stages, and it is easier to follow when you pin it to real months. Take an example in which the procedure is done in mid-November 2026. The first stage is healing, 0–10 days, when the crusts fall away, the swelling subsides and the area slowly recovers. That is the end of November 2026. The next stage is shedding of the transplanted hairs, 2–4 weeks after the procedure, which puts it roughly between the end of November and mid-December 2026. The doctor describes this as a normal stage: only the hairs shed, and the follicles stay in place.

The first growth comes at 3–4 months, which in this example means roughly mid-February to mid-March 2027. Density shows at 6–9 months, so approximately mid-May to mid-August 2027, when the main volume and contour become visible. The final result is expected 12–18 months after the procedure, so from about mid-November 2027 to mid-May 2028. Photo progress is tracked with the coordinator, and follow-up checks are planned at 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months. In the example those checks fall in December 2026, February 2027, May 2027, August 2027 and November 2027.

The calendar also shows how the seasons line up with each stage. In this example the most fragile early weeks fall in the darkest, coldest part of the year, with only about 1 hour of sunshine a day in December. The dense-growth months fall in the sunniest period, when May to August average about 7 hours a day. A procedure in a different month shifts this picture. Nobody can say that one season is correct for everyone, because the doctor decides the plan and the date after looking at the donor area and counting the grafts. The calendar simply lets you see in advance which weather each stage is likely to meet.

Wet months, dry months and the washing routine

Annual precipitation in Bonn is 645 mm. June is the wettest month at 78 mm, followed by August at 70 mm. The driest months are October at 30 mm and April at 35 mm. These numbers do not say how many rainy days to expect, but they show that rain is possible in any season and tends to peak in summer. For a patient in the first stage after the procedure, that is relevant for a simple reason: the instructions on washing the hair, on sleep and on headwear all assume the area is protected during the healing days.

A practical approach is to ask your coordinator before the procedure how the healing days should look in your own routine. Where will you spend them? How will you get from one place to another? What will you do if it rains and you need a hood or a cap? The doctor's care plan covers the transplant and donor areas, but you can add your own situation to the conversation. A short message with photos of what you usually wear on rainy days is enough to get a clear answer on whether it is compatible with the current stage.

The months with less rain, April and October in particular, are often chosen by patients who want one less variable. This is a convenience, not a medical rule. The doctor's schedule and your own availability matter more than a weather statistic. What the rainfall figures do suggest is that an umbrella and a washing plan should be worked out in advance, not on the day of the procedure.

Fitting the stages around Beethovenfest, carnival and the university year

Bonn has a calendar that many patients will want to plan around. The Beethovenfest is held every year in September with about 70 concerts. It has been annual since 1999, and the 2024 edition ran from 5 September to 3 October. Bonn is also described as a centre of Rhenish carnival. And Universität Bonn, founded on 18 October 1818, had 31,501 students and 6,575 doctoral candidates in December 2024. Bonn also hosts 20 United Nations institutions, the highest number in Germany. These are the kinds of fixed dates and working rhythms around which a person may want to be visibly settled.

If September matters to you, count backwards. With the example start in mid-November 2026, September 2027 is about ten months later. That sits between the density stage at 6–9 months and the final result at 12–18 months. The hair is visibly denser by then, with the main volume and contour in place, but the end result is not yet complete. The doctor can tell you how that is likely to look in your case after seeing your photos. If you want the full result before an important event, you will need a start date much earlier, and this is a good question to put to the coordinator.

The same counting works for carnival season or for the start of a semester or a work project. Start from the date you care about, subtract the stage you need to reach, and add the time before shedding and first growth. Because the shedding stage at 2–4 weeks is normal and temporary, avoid scheduling anything important in that window if it worries you. Your coordinator is reachable round the clock on WhatsApp and Telegram, so the planning can be done in whatever hour suits you, and the first online consultation is free.

Insurance, sick pay and what to ask before booking a date

In Germany the statutory health insurance (GKV) does not pay for cosmetic procedures done at the patient's request. The source states that there is no cost coverage by the statutory insurance in such cases, and that the patient bears the full cost, including lost income. For a hair transplant, which the doctor may or may not classify as medically indicated in your individual case, the reasonable step is to ask your own insurer directly before you decide. This text cannot tell you how a specific insurer will treat your case.

There is a second point to understand. After a medically non-indicated procedure, insured persons must share in the costs of resulting complications, including sick pay. Insurers may restrict or refuse benefits under § 52 SGB V, and there is no entitlement to continued wage payment (Entgeltfortzahlung) in that case. About 92% of the population is covered by statutory insurance, and as of 2024 about 88% of the working population is insured through statutory funds and about 11% privately. So most readers in Bonn are in the statutory system and should have these rules in mind when planning time away from work.

The service itself is a one-day procedure under local anaesthesia, so planning for time off is mostly about the healing days when crusts and swelling are visible, not about a long absence. Still, speak to your employer or insurer in advance if you have any doubt. To begin, send photos to the coordinator on WhatsApp or Telegram. The doctor assesses your donor area, counts the grafts and explains which method fits. You will see the price and the plan before anything is booked, and nothing is owed at the consultation stage.

Is there a best month in Bonn to have a transplant?

There is no single correct month, and the doctor decides the plan and date after seeing your photos. Each season simply places the healing stages against different weather. A November start, for example, puts the first 0–10 healing days in a cold, dim period and the density stage in the sunniest months. Ask your coordinator to map your own start date onto the calendar.

How should I think about Bonn's summer sun after the procedure?

From May to August sunshine averages about 7 hours a day, and July has a mean daily maximum of 25.3 °C. The care plan includes advice on headwear, and the doctor can explain what is suitable at each stage. Send your coordinator a photo of what you plan to wear on your head and ask whether it fits the stage you are in.

Can I wear a cap in the cold months?

January in Bonn has a mean daily maximum of 5.4 °C and a mean daily minimum of 0.4–0.5 °C, so many people want to cover the head. Whether a particular cap is acceptable depends on the healing stage and on how it sits on the treated areas. Do not decide this on your own; ask the doctor or coordinator, ideally with a photo.

If I want denser hair by the Beethovenfest in September, when should I start?

Count backwards from the month. Density shows at 6–9 months and the final result comes at 12–18 months. A start in mid-November 2026 reaches about ten months by September 2027. That sits between the two stages, so the hair is visibly denser but not yet at its end result. For a more complete result you would need to begin earlier, and the doctor can advise.

Will statutory health insurance in Germany pay for a hair transplant?

Statutory insurance does not pay for cosmetic procedures done at the patient's request, and the patient bears the full cost. Whether your own case is treated differently is something only your insurer can confirm. Ask them before you fix a date, and share their reply with your coordinator.

What happens with sick pay if there are complications?

After a medically non-indicated procedure, insurers may restrict or refuse benefits under § 52 SGB V. There is also no entitlement to continued wage payment (Entgeltfortzahlung) in that case. Because this affects planning, check with your insurer and employer before choosing the date.

Can I start the consultation at night or at a weekend?

Yes. Coordinators answer round the clock on WhatsApp and Telegram, and the first online consultation is free. Send photos of the front, top and back of the head, and the doctor will assess the donor area and give an opinion on whether a transplant helps in your case.

How many grafts will I need?

It is counted individually at the consultation. The real cases shown for the FUE method range from about 2,500 to 4,000 grafts, but that range is only a reference. The doctor looks at your donor area, counts the grafts and shows the result that is realistic for you.
