Bariatric surgery cost abroad: how to compare offers and what a fair package includes
Bariatric surgery is a medical decision first and a price decision second. A low figure abroad means little if it leaves out tests, hospital stay, nutrition support or follow-up, which matter for years after the operation. This guide explains how to compare packages line by line, which medical checks should come before any price and how to get a written quote before you travel.

Start with suitability, not with the price
Weight loss surgery is meant for specific patients. The NIDDK says health professionals may recommend it for adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 35 or higher who have not lost excess weight through diet, exercise or medication, and that it may be considered at a BMI of 30 to 35 with type 2 diabetes that is hard to control.

Price in your country — message us on WhatsApp
WhatsAppThe NHS lists a BMI of 40 or more, or a BMI between 35 and 40 with a condition that might improve with weight loss, and adds that surgery may be considered at a lower BMI for people with certain family backgrounds.
The NHS also expects you to agree to healthy lifestyle changes and to attend regular check-ups after surgery. A clinic that quotes a price without asking about your weight, health history and habits is not doing its job. Treat a serious assessment as a good sign, not a delay.
What makes up a bariatric surgery price
The type of operation, the hospital and the length of stay all shape the total. The NIDDK describes four main operations: sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass, adjustable gastric band and biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch. They differ in complexity and in the care that follows. Cleveland Clinic gives about two to three hours for gastric bypass and a hospital stay of probably two days.

Ask which operation the quote covers, and ask for these lines separately:
- the surgeon’s fee and the operation performed;
- the anaesthetist and the operating theatre;
- nights in hospital and any intensive monitoring;
- pre-operative tests, such as blood tests and imaging;
- meetings with a dietitian before and after surgery;
- medicines and the first supplements;
- follow-up consultations and how they are held.

The cost of care after the operation
Surgery changes how you eat for life. Cleveland Clinic notes that you will need daily micronutrient supplements because surgery may change the body’s ability to absorb nutrients, and it advises at least 100 grams of protein and about 64 ounces of fluids a day. The diet moves from liquids for two weeks to soft foods over the next two to three months.
The NIDDK also says that you will need prescribed vitamin and mineral supplements. These are ongoing costs that rarely appear in a headline price, so ask whether supplements are included and for how long. Ask who will adjust them over time, how blood tests will be reviewed and whether these check-ups are part of the package or paid separately.
Risks that can change the real cost
Every operation can have complications. The NHS lists blood clots, a stomach leak, wound infection, a blocked or narrowed gut, gallstones and excess skin after weight loss, and notes that removal of excess skin is usually considered cosmetic. A review of short-term and long-term complications in PubMed Central gives a leak rate of 0.6% to 4.4% after gastric bypass, and also reports that revisional surgery may be needed for weight regain or complications.
The NIDDK points out that complications can increase cost. For that reason, ask a clinic in writing what happens if you need treatment for a complication, who pays for it, and how you would be looked after if you had already flown home.
- Which operation is quoted?
- Operations differ in complexity and in aftercare
- Are supplements included, and for how long?
- They are needed after surgery
- Who treats complications?
- They can add cost and travel
- Is revision surgery covered?
- It may be needed for regain or complications
Travel, flying and aftercare at home
The NHS warns that overseas clinics may not provide follow-up, or may not provide it to the same standard, and that air travel together with major surgery raises the risk of blood clots. It advises you to ask what happens if there are complications, where follow-up appointments will be and how easily you could return if more surgery is needed. It also notes that travel insurance does not normally cover problems arising from surgery.
Plan how your own doctor at home will be informed. Ask the clinic for a clear written summary of the operation, your discharge instructions and the diet plan, in a language you understand.
Comparing offers fairly
To compare two offers, put them side by side and give each line a yes or no. Add the cost of flights, the days you need to stay near the clinic, time off work and supplements for the first year. Cleveland Clinic says you may need to avoid strenuous activity for two to four weeks after gastric bypass, so plan your return to normal life with the surgeon rather than by calendar.
Also compare the tone of the consultation. A clinic that explains risks, asks about your health and does not rush you is easier to trust than one that leads with a discount. Read the operation overview on our bariatric surgery page before you compare.

Frequently asked questions
Who can have bariatric surgery?
The NIDDK says surgery may be recommended for adults with a BMI of 35 or higher, or a BMI of 30 to 35 with hard-to-control type 2 diabetes. The NHS gives a BMI of 40 or more, or 35 to 40 with a related condition. A doctor decides after a full assessment.
What should a bariatric surgery package include?
At minimum, ask for the surgeon, anaesthesia, hospital stay, tests, dietitian support, first supplements and follow-up consultations to be listed separately. Also ask what happens if a complication needs treatment and whether revision surgery is covered.
Are supplements part of the cost?
They should be part of your plan. Cleveland Clinic and the NIDDK both say daily vitamin and mineral supplements are needed after surgery, because the body may absorb nutrients differently. Ask whether the first supplies are included and how your levels will be monitored.
Is it safe to fly home after bariatric surgery?
Air travel and major surgery together raise the risk of blood clots, according to the NHS. Ask your surgeon how long to stay near the clinic before flying and what precautions to take. The right timing depends on the operation and on your health.
How can I know the price before I travel?
Request a free online consultation. At City Medical Centre the doctor reviews your health information, recommends a suitable operation and names the cost, which is confirmed in writing and fixed in the contract before you book your trip.
