Why her openness matters

Many people disappear for a couple of weeks after a nose operation and say nothing. Anna Ferrer Padilla chose to explain it, describe the first days honestly — swelling, difficulty breathing, not recognising her own smile at first — and later show a result she called natural. Her words also contain good advice for anyone considering rhinoplasty: it was a long-considered wish, not an impulse, and the goal was a small change.

How rhinoplasty is done today

Rhinoplasty reshapes the bones and cartilage of the nose. It is performed under general anaesthesia or TIVA and takes 1.5 to 3 hours, usually followed by a day and a night in the clinic's inpatient unit. At City Medical Centre the expected result is shown with 3D modelling before surgery, and bone work is done with an ultrasonic piezo device. There are two main approaches:

Who it suits, and how to prepare

The optimal age for rhinoplasty is 18 to 45, and older if health allows. Common reasons are a hump, a wide or drooping tip, asymmetry after an injury, or breathing problems combined with cosmetic concerns. Preparation starts about 21 days before: complete blood count, biochemistry, coagulation panel, infection tests, ECG, chest X-ray and a sinus X-ray or CT.

Recovery

The first 24 hours are spent in the inpatient unit. For the first days you breathe through your mouth with splints in the nostrils; swelling and bruising are possible — exactly the stage Anna described when she said she did not recognise herself when smiling. Nasal splints come out around day 7, the external splint and stitches around day 14. For a month: no exercise, sauna, pool, hot baths or sun. First improvements appear after 2–3 weeks, full healing takes about 4 months, and the final shape settles in 1–1.5 years.
