DHI Hair Transplant

DHI (direct hair implantation) is a transplant technique where the surgeon implants every graft with a Choi implanter pen, creating the opening and placing the graft in one movement. The method gives precise control over the direction of each hair and costs from $2,500 at our centre.

How the DHI technique works

With DHI the grafts are not placed into openings prepared in advance. Instead each graft is loaded into a Choi implanter, a pen-like instrument, and inserted straight into the scalp: the tip makes a micro-opening and sets the graft inside it in a single motion. The surgeon steers the angle, direction and depth of every implanted hair, which is the main technical feature of the method.

The operation is done under local anaesthesia in one day, the same as FUE, and you leave the clinic the same evening.

When DHI is the right choice

Because the pen places each hair individually, DHI is often chosen for the hairline and the temples, where every hair has to sit at a natural angle, and for thickening density between hairs that are still growing. The trade-off is speed: implanting graft by graft takes longer than working with prepared openings, and that extra work is reflected in the price.

DHI still needs a healthy donor zone and a stable pattern of loss. If shedding is active or the cause of hair loss has not been found, any transplant, including DHI, will not hold. There are contraindications, and the doctor decides whether surgery suits you after examining the scalp.

What happens during the operation

You start with a free consultation, which can be online. The doctor counts the grafts your thinning areas need, plans the hairline and quotes a price that is then fixed in the contract. On the surgery day the scalp is numbed, grafts are harvested from the back of the head and implanted with the pen, zone by zone. The number of grafts is set individually at the consultation; the clinic does not use fixed packages.

Plan the day as a full but easy one: most of it passes in a reclining chair, with breaks for lunch and short walks while the surgeon works zone by zone. The pen work on the hairline takes the longest, because every hair is aimed individually; the day ends with a check of the grafts, washing instructions and the road home.

Recovery and when the result appears

These stages are the same for both techniques; DHI does not make the hair grow faster, it changes how precisely each hair is placed.

The first ten days run by a short rule list: sleep with the head raised, no scratching, washing as demonstrated, and no gym, pool or sun until the doctor clears them. Hats that press on the hairline are also off the list for a while; the scheduled check-ups confirm that healing is on track.

DHI compared with FUE

Classic FUE implants grafts into prepared openings and covers larger areas faster, which is why it is the base method for broad thinning. DHI wins where precision matters more than speed: the hairline, the temples, and adding density between existing hairs. Many cases combine both: grafts are extracted by FUE and implanted by DHI. Whether your case needs one technique or both is settled at the consultation.

DHI price and how to book

DHI costs from $2,500 (FUE from $2,200, the combined method $2,700). The quote includes dressings, healing check-ups, a care plan and follow-up visits at 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months. The exact sum is named after the doctor counts your grafts, and it is written into the contract before surgery. Coordinators are on Telegram and WhatsApp 24/7 and will help you arrange the first appointment.

DHI operation: the sequence from consultation to result

  1. Stage 1. ConsultationThe scalp is examined, the graft count is calculated and the price is fixed in the contract.
  2. Stage 2. PreparationTests are taken and the surgery date is booked.
  3. Stage 3. SurgeryLocal anaesthesia; grafts are harvested from the donor zone and implanted with the Choi pen. You go home the same day.
  4. First 10 daysHealing: crusts come off, swelling goes down.
  5. Weeks 2–4The implanted hairs shed; the follicles stay in place.
  6. Months 3–9New hair grows and density builds up.
  7. Months 12–18The final density and hairline.

I am sharing my experience, because before the operation I went through a pile of reviews myself and was looking for real stories. I had a beard transplant six months ago. Honestly, in the first days after the procedure I felt a little jittery: my face looked unfamiliar, there was slight swelling and small scabs. In the first couple of months the hair partly fell out, as the doctor had warned. But now the result truly makes me very happy) From about the 4th month active, even growth began. The transplanted hair took very well, the beard now looks as natural as possible, no bald patches are left. The beard became much thicker and denser, with the shape I had thought about for a long time. All in all, I recommend the clinic, the doctor was polite and explained everything 👍 The result is definitely worth it!

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between DHI and FUE?

In FUE grafts are placed into openings prepared in advance; in DHI the pen makes the opening and places the graft in one movement. DHI gives finer control over each hair and suits hairline work; FUE covers wider areas faster.

How much does a DHI transplant cost?

From $2,500. The doctor counts the grafts your case needs at the free consultation and the exact price is fixed in the contract.

Does DHI hurt?

The operation runs under local anaesthesia, so the scalp is numbed and you stay comfortable; you are at the clinic for one day.

When does the final DHI result show?

Implanted hairs shed in weeks 2–4, growth starts at months 3–4, density shows at months 6–9, and the result is final at 12–18 months.

Is the shedding phase a failure?

No. After the transplant the hairs fall out while the follicles remain in the skin and keep producing new hair from months 3–4.

Can DHI and FUE be done together?

Yes, the combined method extracts grafts by FUE and implants them by DHI; it costs $2,700 and is considered when both wide coverage and a detailed hairline are needed.
