Is this doctor entered on a register? A short routine
Port Harcourt is the capital of Rivers State, on the Bonny River in the Niger Delta. The 2006 census counted 1,005,904 people in the metropolis, and a 2019 estimate puts the figure at 1,148,665. In a city of that size, a person who is thinking about a hair transplant will meet a good many opinions, and the only ones worth keeping are those that can be checked.
Start with the regulator. The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria keeps the registers of persons entitled to practise. Its registration guideline makes a point that is easy to miss: registration alone is necessary but not sufficient. A practitioner must also pay the annual practising fee before 31 December for the year ahead, and those who default are left out of the published Register of Licensed Medical and Dental Practitioners and may not practise. Renewal is linked to 20 credit units of continuing professional development.
The same guideline says that specialists must be registered as specialists, and that a fellowship certificate on its own is not enough. So when a clinic describes a doctor as a hair transplant surgeon or a plastic surgeon, ask two things in writing: in which register is this person entered, and in which year was the licence last renewed? Keep a dated note of every check you make.
The guideline also states that employers must ascertain that their doctors are registered and licensed. That is a fair thing to ask a clinic as well: how does it check this for its own staff? Any team that works carefully will find the question ordinary.
Two quotes on one table
Comparing clinics by their final sums tells you almost nothing. Make a table with one column per clinic and fill in the same rows for each: method, number of grafts, treated area, who operates, what the sum includes, how many follow-up checks and when, and what the contract says if you change your mind.
The method row deserves care. With FUE, grafts are lifted out one by one with forceps, and no incisions or stitches are involved. DHI uses a Choi pen to set each graft directly, so the surgeon does not first cut channels. The third option takes grafts by FUE and sets them by DHI, and it is aimed at making existing growth denser in androgenetic alopecia. If one quote leaves the method blank, ask for it before you ask for anything else.
The graft row follows from a count of what the donor zone can give, the back of the head or the temples. At City Medical Centre the price is named after that count and then fixed in the contract. If another clinic quotes a number of grafts before looking at your head, treat the number as a guess.

An honest reading of who benefits and who should wait
According to the clinic, a transplant is a good idea in androgenetic or diffuse alopecia, with bald areas, or with a receding frontal area. It also says that many people are better served by another route, and that the doctor will say so at the consultation, which saves the patient money.
The written reasons not to operate include cancer, epilepsy, diabetes mellitus, a pacemaker, serious heart conditions, a past pulmonary embolism, HIV, hepatitis B or C and intolerance to anaesthetics, as well as trichotillomania, body dysmorphic disorder and age under 18. The list of reasons not to operate also names insufficient hair density, damage from a burn or injury, and shedding that follows an illness or a hormonal imbalance.
You do not need to settle this alone. Send the coordinator your phone number and pictures of the thinning places, and a doctor will study them and tell you if a transplant would help; no booking is made. In your own notes, mark the lines of the list that apply to you, and ask the clinic to confirm your reading in writing.
Questions for the doctor in this part of the process: how would you describe my pattern of loss? Which method suits it, and why not the other two? What do you see in the donor zone that sets the limit on the result? And if I decided to wait a year, what should I watch for in the meantime?
Getting ready for a first online call from Rivers State

Nigeria's National Health Insurance Authority was established under the Act signed on 19 May 2022 with the aim of giving people financial access to quality care. Its own description says that beneficiaries generally pay no cash for treatment apart from a 10% co-payment for drugs. Its description does not mention cosmetic procedures, so a hair transplant should not be assumed to fall inside it. If you hold a plan, ask the scheme for a written answer about your case.
Keep a diary for the months after surgery, using the clinic's timetable. Over the first ten days the scalp heals: crusts come away and swelling goes down. By the second to the fourth week the newly placed hairs shed, which the clinic treats as routine, because the follicles themselves stay where they are. New hair starts at three to four months, thickness returns between six and nine, and the final result with a natural edge arrives between twelve and eighteen months.
Mark reviews at 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months on a calendar the day you sign. For each, photograph the same areas from the same distance, and note what the doctor said. When the third month brings doubts, the earlier pictures answer them.
How often must a Nigerian doctor renew the licence?
The Medical and Dental Council guideline sets an annual practising fee, due before 31 December for the following year, and links renewal to 20 credit units of continuing professional development.
Is a fellowship certificate enough to call someone a specialist?
According to the Council's guideline it is not. A specialist must be registered as such, so ask for the registration, not only the certificate.
