A hair transplant is not only for the scalp. Same grafts from the back of the head, same FUE method — only the area changes.

Beard transplant

The donor area at the back of the head supplies the grafts, placed through micro-punctures of about 1 mm with no scars left. Before the operation the doctor and you discuss the shape, taking your facial features into account. Transplanted hair grows for life, and the beard can be trimmed and styled as usual.

I am sharing my experience, because before the operation I went through a pile of reviews myself and was looking for real stories. I had a beard transplant six months ago. Honestly, in the first days after the procedure I felt a little jittery: my face looked unfamiliar, there was slight swelling and small scabs. In the first couple of months the hair partly fell out, as the doctor had warned. But now the result truly makes me very happy) From about the 4th month active, even growth began. The transplanted hair took very well, the beard now looks as natural as possible, no bald patches are left. The beard became much thicker and denser, with the shape I had thought about for a long time. All in all, I recommend the clinic, the doctor was polite and explained everything 👍 The result is definitely worth it!

Frequent questions

We tell what people
ask before booking

People often say hair implants, but no artificial hair is used. In a hair transplant the doctor moves your own follicles (grafts) from the donor area to thinning or bald areas using FUE or DHI.

City Medical Centre doctors

Yes, patients in Cape Town are accepted regularly. An online consultation lets you discuss your case before booking.

FUE: $2,200 (≈ R37,000). DHI: $2,500 (≈ R42,000). Combined: $2,700 (≈ R45,500). A free consultation and graft count gives you the final, contract-fixed price with no hidden extras.

It takes just one day from start to finish, and you're free to go home afterward.

It helps with stable pattern hair loss and a receding hairline when there are enough donor grafts. Some types of alopecia need treatment first; the doctor checks this at the consultation.

No — local anaesthesia keeps the whole procedure pain-free.

FUE relies on tweezer harvesting with no incisions or stitches. DHI relies on Choi-pen implantation without channels. The combined DHI+FUE approach harvests by FUE and implants by DHI.

The doctor calculates the exact number of grafts at a free consultation, based on your donor area.

Healing runs 0–10 days, followed by normal hair shedding at 2–4 weeks. Growth kicks in at 3–4 months, thickens by 6–9 months, and reaches its final result at 12–18 months.

Your procedure includes a lifetime hair-growth guarantee under contract.

Hair transplant for Cape Town: method, start, timeline

Two methods are used for a resident of Cape Town, FUE and DHI, and both go without cuts and stitches, under local anaesthesia, within one day. Graft survival is 98-100 %, and a price from $2,200 (≈ R37,000) appears in the contract after a free count of the grafts.

You can begin in Cape Town without leaving home: the online consultation is free, and the doctor looks at photos of the thinning area and counts how many grafts it will take. The clinic is reachable 24/7, so a message fits your schedule.

The head heals in 0-10 days, the transplanted hairs fall at 2-4 weeks as a normal part of the cycle, growth starts at 3-4 months, density arrives at 6-9 and the result is final at 12-18. Photo check-ups with a personal coordinator at 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months, plus a lifetime growth guarantee.

How we prepare and review medical content · Medical disclaimer

Verify first, then discuss grafts: the register behind a doctor's name

The Cape Town metropolitan area counted 4,772,846 people in the 2022 census. The decision is easier when it is made in a fixed order, and the order that protects you best starts with who is allowed to treat you at all.

In South Africa the statutory regulator for health professionals is the Health Professions Council of South Africa, and registration with it is both a professional prerequisite and a legal requirement. Its public iRegister platform exists so that members of the public can verify a practitioner's status, and a registration certificate certifies that its bearer is a legally qualified healthcare practitioner. When any clinic tells you about a doctor, ask which register that doctor sits on, ask for the registration number, and check it on the register itself instead of trusting a brochure.

Put the clinic's own papers on the same pile: the number of its medical licence, the legal entity that provides the care, and the diplomas and certificates of the doctor who will study your photographs. The clinic says all of it can be checked before payment, which makes the request routine.

The HPCSA also receives complaints against practitioners, beginning with a check of registration. It is a useful thing to know, though not a reason to expect trouble; the point is that a regulator exists whose job is to answer exactly the questions you are about to ask.

Language belongs on the checklist too. In the 2011 census figures Afrikaans, Xhosa and English were the three largest first languages in Cape Town, at 35.7, 29.2 and 27.8 per cent. Whichever you read most comfortably, tell the coordinator, and ask that the contract and the written instructions for washing, sleep and head coverings reach you in a language you can follow without a dictionary.

A map of the donor zone and the questions it raises

Every transplant is a transfer: hair moves from the donor zone, the back of the head or the temples, to the area that has lost it. For that reason the first look at your head concerns what you have to give, not only what you have lost. Photograph the back and sides as carefully as the front, in daylight, with dry hair.

Questions to send with the photographs: is my donor zone adequate for the area I want to cover? Which area would the doctor treat first, and why? What does the doctor expect the result to look like, and which parts of that expectation depend on my personal features? Survival and trauma rates quoted for each method are averages, and the doctor sets out the real figures at the consultation. So your own figures are the ones to ask for.

If a doctor tells you that a transplant will not help, take that seriously. The clinic puts it plainly: the doctor has no reason to send you into theatre without need. The list of conditions that rule surgery out is a long one. It includes cancer, epilepsy, a pacemaker, diabetes mellitus, serious heart conditions and hepatitis B or C, along with being under 18. Read the full list before you write, and mention anything that applies to you.

Scalp, beard or eyebrows: choosing where to begin

The possible requests differ: a filled crown, a beard, or eyebrows that have not recovered after long years of plucking. All three are served by the FUE extraction method, with the donor hair taken from the back of the head. For a beard the grafts pass through micro-punctures of about 1 mm; for brows the surgeon draws the line first and reviews reference photographs with you, so the shape is agreed before a single hair is placed.

Because the three areas can be combined, decide on your priority before the call. Which of the three bothers you most when you see yourself in a photograph? Which could wait? A coordinator will find it easier to quote and plan when the order is clear, and you avoid the feeling of drifting into a larger plan than you meant.

For the scalp itself there are three techniques: FUE with forceps and no stitches, DHI with a Choi pen so that no channels are cut, and a combined protocol using FUE for extraction and DHI for implantation. Do not try to choose among them alone. Send your photographs, say how much density matters to you, and let the doctor explain which fits and why.

One more habit pays off: keep every reply in a single thread, so that a description of the technique, the area and the count can be placed beside the contract when it arrives. Differences between the thread and the paper are the first thing to raise.

What to expect from a consultation, and what you should leave with

Your first online conversation costs nothing and commits you to nothing. The coordinator takes a phone number and your photographs, a doctor looks at them, and the answer is whether a transplant would help; if it would, the talk moves towards a plan made for your own operation.

Leave the exchange with a short pile of paper: the technique proposed and the reason, the graft count and the area it covers, the sum fixed in the contract, the list of tests required beforehand together with instructions for them, the schedule of checks, and the name of the coordinator who will stay with you. If any of these is absent, send one more message before you decide.

Treat the messenger itself as part of the service. Coordinators answer on WhatsApp and Telegram at any hour, which matters less on the first day than on the awkward evening in month three, when you wonder whether shedding is going as it should.

Using the follow-up schedule the way it was meant

The operation takes one day and is done under local anaesthesia; then you go home. What follows is a long, quiet stretch. Healing is counted in the first ten days. Transplanted hairs fall out between weeks two and four, which is a normal stage of the process. Fresh growth is expected from the third or fourth month, density from the sixth to the ninth, and the end result between the twelfth and the eighteenth.

Checks come at 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months. A practical habit helps: take the same photographs at the same angles before each check and send them to your coordinator, who is yours alone and takes pictures as things change. Ask for the instructions on washing, sleep and head coverings in writing, and for the plan on returning to sport and hair care, so that nothing rests on memory.

If something looks unlike the plan between two checks, do not sit on the question until the next appointment. Photograph it, send it to the coordinator and ask. A small doubt put into words in week three is easier to settle than a large one carried until month six.

What does a registration certificate from the HPCSA actually tell me?

It certifies that the person named on it is a legally qualified healthcare practitioner who is allowed to practise in South Africa. It is proof of registration, and the public can check practitioner status on the council's iRegister platform.

What if a clinic names a different register for its doctor?

Ask for the name of the register and the doctor's registration number, then check them with that register directly. Keep the answer in writing next to the clinic's licence number and the legal entity's name.

Can I prepare for the donor-zone question myself?

Photograph the back and the sides of the head in daylight with dry hair, as carefully as the thinning area at the front. Add a note on how long the loss has been going on and which medicines you take.

Which comes first, a beard or the scalp?

That depends on what bothers you most. Both use the FUE method with grafts from the back of the head, and the doctor can plan them together or separately. Decide your own order before the call. If you are unsure, send a photo of each area and ask which one the doctor would treat first, then wait for the reason, not only the answer.

How do I compare two quotes for the same transplant?

Line up the technique, who operates, the graft count, what the sum includes, the checks afterwards and the contract terms in one table. Fill every cell from a written answer and ask again where a cell stays empty.

Is a conversation in a messenger enough to decide?

It is enough for a first picture: whether a transplant is realistic, which technique looks suitable and what the contract will contain. The graft count itself rests on the doctor's study of your donor zone. Ask also how the coordinator will stay in touch during recovery, and whether the contract names that person.

What belongs in my notes after each check?

The date, photographs of the same areas, any instruction on washing, sleep or head coverings, and every question you did not get to ask. Bring the list to the next conversation.

Who do I contact between the scheduled checks?

Your own coordinator, who is reachable on WhatsApp and Telegram at any hour. Send photographs when something changes and ask your question in the same message.
