It is one of 20 local government areas of Lagos State, whose capital Ikeja has held that role since 1976. For a hair transplant, though, what matters about the place is its calendar and its paperwork, and both follow.

Harmattan months and the weeks when the scalp is healing
West Africa's dry season has a name: the harmattan. The reference entry defines it as a season between the end of November and the middle of March, brought by a dry, dusty northeasterly wind that crosses the Sahara towards the Gulf of Guinea. It says the wind carries fine dust particles, clears cloud cover and lowers humidity, and lists dry skin, chapped lips and dry eyes among its effects. For Lagos, the table for the dry season, November to April, shows only 9.7 millimetres of rain in December and 10.5 in January.
How does that relate to a scalp that has just received grafts? The early phase lasts 0 to 10 days, while crusts come off, swelling subsides and the area slowly recovers. Alongside it you receive instructions covering hair washing, sleep and headwear, and a plan for returning to sport and hair care. Dust, dry air and strong sun are all things worth raising with your doctor when you choose a date, because the guidance you receive is specific to your case. We do not claim a medical rule here; we point out that the dry months and the healing weeks can coincide.
Sunshine matters too, in the other direction. On the Lagos Island table December has 197 hours of sunshine and April 189, while July has 99 and August 105. If the plan is to operate in a month with more sun, the question of which headgear to choose outdoors deserves an answer from the doctor before surgery, not after it.
One more point on dust: the reference entry says fine particles of between 0.5 and 10 micrometres are carried by the wind, and that humidity can fall sharply in the middle of the day. Your coordinator, available at any hour, can explain anything in the washing and headwear guidance that is unclear.
Reading the regrowth timeline against the Lagos calendar
The stages are fixed, and only the dates are yours to place. First comes healing, 0 to 10 days. The transplanted hairs then shed after 2 to 4 weeks, which is normal. New growth begins at 3 to 4 months, density comes back at 6 to 9 months, and the finished result, with full volume and a natural edge, is reached at 12 to 18 months.
Put those stages on a Lagos calendar. If you were operated on in the latter part of November, the shedding phase would come in December, inside the harmattan months and with the table showing a mean daily maximum of 31.6 degrees Celsius. Regrowth would begin around March, the hottest month on that table at 32.2 degrees. Volume would build through the rains, which peak in June with 433.7 millimetres, and the final result would arrive between the next November and May. An operation in May, at the start of the wet season, would reverse the picture. Neither is better; they are simply different companions for the same stages.
The Ikeja entry offers a second view of the same year, built from a different dataset. It describes a hot season, with average highs above 32 degrees Celsius, from about 12 December to 25 April and peaking in March, and a cooler period from about 23 June to 30 September with August the coldest month. The two tables agree on the shape of the year: warm throughout, hottest at the turn of the calendar, softer in the middle of the rains. That shape, not a single number, is what you should carry into the conversation about timing. The Ikeja table adds two details that matter for the first weeks: relative humidity is 77.7 per cent in January and 78.8 per cent in December against 88.0 to 89.0 per cent from June to September, and January has 1.3 rainy days against 15.1 in June. The dry months are therefore also the least humid ones, and the months of the early shedding phase can be dusty or damp depending on the date you choose.
Plan your own milestones around check-ups. Post-operative checks are booked by the clinic for months 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12, and between them a personal coordinator follows your progress through the photos you send. A diary that holds both the biological stages and the check-ups makes the long wait easier to read.
Whether your thinning is a case for grafts at all
Hair loss comes in kinds that a transplant does not suit, and the consultation is there to tell them apart. Androgenetic or diffuse alopecia, bald areas and a receding front of the scalp count as reasons to go ahead. Against that, it lists a naturally high frontal edge, insufficient hair density, genetic traits of hair growth, shedding following an illness and shedding tied to hormones. Contraindications begin with trichotillomania, body dysmorphic disorder and cancer and continue through age under 18, epilepsy, a pacemaker, diabetes mellitus, HIV, hepatitis B or C and pulmonary embolism.
The methods differ mainly in how the grafts are put in place. With FUE the grafts are taken out with forceps and no incisions are made. DHI places them straight in with a Choi pen. The combined protocol extracts by FUE and implants by DHI. Beard and eyebrow transplants draw on the same donor area at the back of the head.

Checking the doctor, and what the national insurer does not say
The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria keeps the national register of doctors (mdcn.gov.ng). According to the reference entry it started work in 1963, hands out annual practising licences and runs a disciplinary tribunal for professional misconduct. For facilities, Lagos State has the Health Facilities Monitoring and Accreditation Agency, established in March 2006, which states that it accredits, inspects, monitors and licenses public and private health facilities in the state.
The National Health Insurance Authority operates under an Act that was signed on 19 May 2022. Its homepage speaks of cover for an employee, a spouse and as many as four biological children, for the informal sector and for vulnerable groups, with a 10 percent co-payment on drugs. Cosmetic procedures are not mentioned, so a hair transplant should not be assumed to be covered. If it matters to your decision, ask your scheme or insurer in writing.
