Tumescent Liposuction

Tumescent liposuction is the classic technique on which all modern fat removal is built: the surgeon fills the treatment area with a large volume of anaesthetic solution and then removes the fat through a thin cannula. Many areas can be treated under local anaesthesia alone, with prices from $1,200 per area.

What tumescent means in practice

Before any fat is removed, the surgeon injects a large volume of sterile saline solution containing a local anaesthetic and a vessel-narrowing medicine. The tissue swells up and becomes firm, which is where the name comes from: tumescent means swollen. In this firm state the fat separates from the surrounding structures, blood vessels are squeezed down, and the cannula can pass with far less bleeding and bruising than in the early days of liposuction.

That fluid is also why many tumescent procedures can run on local anaesthesia alone, without general anaesthesia.

Who the classic method suits

Tumescent liposuction is the general-purpose technique: it handles larger volumes and broad areas, such as the abdomen, flanks or thighs, where the surgeon needs to remove a substantial amount of fat evenly. The right candidates are people close to a healthy weight with local deposits that resist diet and exercise, firm skin, and realistic expectations.

Liposuction is not obesity treatment and does not remove the fat around internal organs. There are contraindications, and the doctor decides whether surgery suits you after the examination; the first consultation at our centre is free.

Preparation follows a short written list: medicines that affect clotting stop two weeks before on the doctor's instruction, alcohol and cigarettes are set aside for the week ahead, and the last meal finishes eight hours before surgery, because the body handles anaesthesia better on an empty stomach.

How the procedure is performed

The surgeon marks the areas, injects the tumescent fluid and waits for it to take effect, then makes a few small incisions and passes a thin hollow cannula through them, removing fat by suction in even layers. Duration depends on the scope: from about an hour for a small area to 3–4 hours for a combined procedure. Anaesthesia is local or general; with local you are discharged 3–4 hours after surgery, with general you stay one day in the clinic.

On the day the sequence is fixed: marking standing, photographs, the anaesthesia agreed with the anaesthetist, then the injections of tumescent fluid, which need time to take effect; that waiting is part of the method, not a delay. Dressings go on after the suction, the compression garment is fitted, and you leave with the first check-up date in hand.

Recovery week by week

Swelling is the main thing that hides the result early on; it fades gradually, which is why the mirror at week two is not the final verdict.

Tumescent, VASER or laser: what is the difference

All modern methods remove fat through a thin cannula; they differ in how the fat is prepared. Tumescent technique uses only the fluid and the surgeon's manual work, which makes it the base for larger areas. VASER adds ultrasound to break up dense fat and sculpt the surface. Laser liposuction melts fat with a fibre and is used for small zones. The surgeon picks the method for your area and fat type at the consultation.

Questions that matter for this method: how much fluid will go into your areas, what the day after looks like in terms of walking, shower and garment schedule, and how the visits at 7 days, 3 and 6 months will track the contour. The surgeon answers these before anything is signed.

Frequently asked questions

How much does tumescent liposuction cost?

From $1,200 per area. Each area is priced separately, and the total for a combined session is fixed in the contract after the free consultation.

Can it be done under local anaesthesia?

Often yes: the tumescent fluid itself contains a local anaesthetic. For larger scopes the surgeon may choose general anaesthesia; with local you go home 3–4 hours after surgery.

Why is fluid injected before the fat removal?

The fluid numbs the tissue, narrows the vessels and makes the fat firm and easy to separate, which means less bleeding and bruising than in the early days of liposuction.

When can I go back to work?

Most patients return within 7–10 days. For the first 7 days there is no physical exertion, and the compression garment is worn for 4–6 weeks.

When will I see the result?

First results appear in 3–4 weeks as the swelling subsides; the final contour is assessed at 3–6 months.

Is tumescent liposuction outdated?

No, it is the base technique that other methods build on, and for larger areas it remains the standard. VASER and laser are additions for specific tasks, not replacements.
