Grafts taken from the back of the head, the donor area, move through micro-punctures of about 1 mm, with no scars left. The doctor discusses the shape with you before the operation, taking your facial features into account. The hair grows for life once transplanted; the beard can be trimmed and styled as usual.

I am sharing my experience, because before the operation I went through a pile of reviews myself and was looking for real stories. I had a beard transplant six months ago. Honestly, in the first days after the procedure I felt a little jittery: my face looked unfamiliar, there was slight swelling and small scabs. In the first couple of months the hair partly fell out, as the doctor had warned. But now the result truly makes me very happy) From about the 4th month active, even growth began. The transplanted hair took very well, the beard now looks as natural as possible, no bald patches are left. The beard became much thicker and denser, with the shape I had thought about for a long time. All in all, I recommend the clinic, the doctor was polite and explained everything 👍 The result is definitely worth it!

Frequent questions

Here is what people
ask before booking

People often say hair implants, but no artificial hair is used. In a hair transplant the doctor moves your own follicles (grafts) from the donor area to thinning or bald areas using FUE or DHI.

City Medical Centre doctors

Yes — City Medical Centre regularly treats patients from other cities and countries, starting with an online consultation.

Pricing starts from $2,200 (≈ UGX 8,700,000) for FUE, $2,500 (≈ UGX 9,800,000) for DHI, and $2,700 (≈ UGX 11,000,000) for combined DHI+FUE. The exact figure is confirmed for free after a graft count and written into the contract.

It takes just one day from start to finish, and you're free to go home afterward.

It helps with stable pattern hair loss and a receding hairline when there are enough donor grafts. Some types of alopecia need treatment first; the doctor checks this at the consultation.

The surgery is performed under local anaesthesia, so it's painless.

FUE is the classic method: grafts are harvested with tweezers, with no cuts or stitches. DHI implants grafts without channels, using a Choi pen. A combined method harvests grafts by FUE and implants them with the DHI pen.

A doctor determines the graft number at a free consultation, looking at your donor area's capacity.

0–10 days for healing, 2–4 weeks for normal shedding of transplanted hair, 3–4 months for new growth to start, 6–9 months for real density, and 12–18 months for the final result.

You get a lifetime hair growth guarantee, written into the contract.

Why this hair transplant fits a resident of Kampala

People in Kampala usually ask how heavy the surgery is: FUE and DHI need no cuts and no stitches and run on local anaesthesia, and one day covers it. Graft survival is 98-100 %, with a price from $2,200 (≈ UGX 8,700,000) fixed in the contract after a free graft count.

For Kampala the entry point is simple and free: an online consultation where the doctor reviews photos of the thinning area and counts the grafts you would need. The clinic answers 24/7, so a message never sits overnight.

Healing fits into 0-10 days, and at 2-4 weeks the transplanted hairs shed exactly as the protocol predicts. Growth begins at 3-4 months, density comes at 6-9 and the final result at 12-18. Check-ups at 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months with photo tracking by a personal coordinator and a lifetime growth guarantee.

How we prepare and review medical content · Medical disclaimer

A quote is not a plan: questions that tell them apart

When you weigh a transplant in Kampala, a price with nothing behind it tells you very little. A plan has parts you can inspect. Ask for the technique in writing, the reason it suits your pattern of loss, the area that will supply the donor hairs, the name of the surgeon, the tests you must complete first and the schedule of check-ups. Where any of these is vague, the figure that comes with it is vague too.

The sequence at City Medical Centre is built so that nobody quotes blind. Pictures of the bald or thinning spots go to a coordinator via WhatsApp or Telegram, and a doctor judges whether grafts could help. During the free consultation the doctor inspects the donor zone, works out how many grafts the case needs and sketches a result you can reasonably expect. Only after that does the price get written into the contract. Any sum named before the count is a guess.

Ask what the reply would look like if a transplant were wrong for you. The clinic is frank on the point: it says a good share of enquirers are better off without an operation, and its doctor gains nothing from sending anyone to theatre unnecessarily. A refusal is a legitimate answer, it costs nothing, and it deserves to be filed with your other papers.

Think about who will be reachable in the months after the operation. A personal coordinator is assigned at the clinic and stays with you through recovery, looking at photographs as the scalp changes and handling practical questions. Ask any other provider the same question and notice whether the answer names a person or a department.

Read the draft contract slowly and with a pen. Underline the technique, the services listed as included, the dates of the follow-up checks and any clause about changing the plan. Mark every sentence you could not restate in your own words. Send the marked copy back and wait for a written reply to each mark. A clinic that welcomes this exercise is showing you how it will treat later questions.

Pens, forceps and a hybrid: what each name hides

Expect to hear three names. With FUE, forceps lift out one graft after another, which means no cuts and no sutures. DHI saves you the step of opening channels, since the Choi pen plants each graft on the spot. A hybrid marries the two, collecting the first way and placing the second way. The clinic gives 98 to 100 percent as the survival range for FUE. Survival and trauma percentages for any method are averages, a rough guide only; your own result turns on the treated area and your physiology.

The harvest comes from the back of the head or the temples, by a scar-free technique. One day covers the whole operation, under local anaesthesia, and then you head home. Required tests are listed by the clinic, which also guides you through completing them. A deposit, taken by card or sent online, locks in the date, while the contract captures every condition. The figure it states is the one in force on the day.

Scalp work is not the only use for the donor region. A beard transplant follows the FUE principle too. Each graft goes in through a puncture of about 1 mm, scars do not remain, and the outline is talked through in advance with your face in view. Eyebrows begin with the surgeon sketching a line at the opening consultation, which is then tested against reference pictures and your proportions. Brows worn thin by many years of plucking are a typical candidate.

The two lists every candidate should read

Clear indications, in the clinic's words, are androgenetic or diffuse alopecia plus bald zones and a frontal edge that has moved back. Against surgery it counts patchy alopecia, density too low to work with, inherited growth patterns, scarring from burns or injuries, and loss that followed an illness or a hormonal upset.

A second list sets out contraindications: a pacemaker, diabetes, epilepsy, cancer, serious heart disease, an earlier pulmonary embolism, viral hepatitis (B or C), HIV, anaesthetic intolerance, the compulsion to pull out hair (trichotillomania), body dysmorphic disorder and being a minor. Go through it with your own history in front of you and mention anything relevant when you first write.

Bring three questions to the consultation. Which technique fits my pattern of loss? How many grafts can my donor area support? What will I be looking at once 3 to 4 months have passed, and again at 12 to 18 months? As a map: healing takes 0 to 10 days, shedding comes at 2 to 4 weeks, density arrives at 6 to 9 months, and the final result follows; follow-up appointments sit at 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months.

Write the answers down the same day. A dated note with the doctor's reasons stays accurate, while memory drifts within days.

Using the Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners Council

Uganda's regulator for physicians is the Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners Council, set up under the Medical and Dental Practitioners Act. It registers and licenses doctors and supervises professional standards. Its website lists a Public Doctor Search.

A short routine makes the council useful. Take the doctor's full name from the coordinator, run it through the Doctor Search, and note the registration and specialty it shows. If the portal gives an answer you cannot match to the name you were given, write to the registrar at [email protected] before you pay a deposit. Keep the reply, with its date, in the folder that holds your contract.

The clinic names its hair transplant doctors, a plastic surgeon and assistants, quotes a medical licence, and shows diplomas and certificates on request. Since the doctor at the consultation is the doctor in theatre, the name you verify is the name that counts. Check before a deposit moves, since a mismatch is easier to resolve while nothing is paid.

Paying for a transplant: what Ugandan insurance figures show

Uganda's Insurance Regulatory Authority wrote in 2022 that health-insurance uptake is below 1%, and an Afrobarometer dispatch of 30 March 2025 found 4% of respondents with medical aid coverage. Of those without it, 32% said it was unaffordable and 33% did not know of a scheme. The same dispatch found that 78% of Ugandans had not heard of the National Health Insurance Scheme.

Cosmetic hair restoration should not be assumed to be covered, so ask your own insurer in writing if you hold a policy. With the clinic you enter a contract for paid medical services, and cost is discussed after the graft count. File the signed copy and every written reply together. If you later need to remember what was promised, one folder answers faster than a long scroll through messages, and it makes any later conversation with the clinic or with an insurer shorter.

What should a transplant plan contain besides a price?

The technique and the reason it suits you, the donor area, the name of the surgeon, the tests required first and the follow-up dates. At this clinic the price is fixed in the contract after the graft count, not before.

How can I check a doctor registered in Uganda?

The Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners Council has a Public Doctor Search on its website. Enter the full name the coordinator gave you and note the registration and specialty displayed. For questions the portal does not settle, the registrar can be reached at [email protected].

How many people in Uganda have health insurance?

Very few. The Insurance Regulatory Authority wrote in 2022 that uptake is below 1%. A survey dispatch from Afrobarometer on 30 March 2025 found 4% of respondents with coverage. Of those without it, 32% said it was unaffordable and 33% did not know of a scheme.

How many Ugandans have heard of the National Health Insurance Scheme?

In the Afrobarometer dispatch, 78% had not heard of it, so a transplant should be treated as self-funded unless a policy says otherwise in writing.

Is the shedding at 2 to 4 weeks a bad sign?

Not at all; it belongs to the expected course. The new hairs drop out, yet the follicles remain beneath the skin. A dated photograph to your coordinator is the way to have a particular worry looked at, and the scheduled check-ups at 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months follow the stages.

Can the same donor area be used for a beard or eyebrows?

Yes, they share it. Beards and eyebrows follow the FUE principle with grafts taken from the back of the head. The beard outline is discussed against your face, while for brows the line is drawn by the surgeon before anything else.

What should I do if the doctor advises against surgery?

Ask for the reasons in writing and file them. At that stage nothing has been booked or charged, and seeking a second opinion elsewhere is a reasonable next step.

Why should I read the contract before paying a deposit?

Because a deposit holds the surgery date under the terms written there. Check the method, what is included, the follow-up dates and how a change of plan is handled, and ask for written answers to any line you cannot restate yourself.
