Detroit takes its name from the French 'le détroit', the strait: the narrow stretch of water between the city and Windsor, Ontario. Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac and Alphonse de Tonty founded Fort Pontchartrain du Détroit on its bank on 24 July 1701, and Cadillac had grand plans, calling the settlement the 'Paris de la Nouvelle-France'.
The ambition took two centuries to come half true. Carried by the automotive industry, Detroit was the fourth-largest city in the United States by 1920, and its name became shorthand for the car business the way 'Wall Street' stands for finance. The fall was just as steep: from 1.85 million residents at the 1950 census the population shrank by more than 65%, and in 2013 Detroit became the largest American city ever to file for municipal bankruptcy.

A few blocks south, a 24-foot bronze arm and fist commissioned by Sports Illustrated in memory of boxer Joe Louis hangs from a pyramid frame over the corner of Jefferson and Woodward.
