Not every person needs one

Your case may be solvable without surgery; the doctor will say so right at the consultation — and you will not waste your money. Below are the conditions where a transplant works.

A man with bald patches at a consultation: a case where a hair transplant helps

When a transplant helps

  • Androgenetic or diffuse alopecia
  • Bald areas and a receding hairline
  • A high hairline
  • Insufficient hair density
  • Genetic side of hair growth
  • Damage caused by a burn or injury
  • Shedding after an illness
  • Shedding due to a hormonal imbalance

Not sure which group you are in?

Your number is enough. A coordinator asks for photos in a messenger, the doctor says whether a transplant helps. Free, nothing booked.

Beard transplant

FUE method, free of cuts or stitches

A surgeon marking the beard line before a transplant at City Medical Centre

Grafts are taken from the donor area at the back of the head and moved through micro-punctures of about 1 mm — no scars are left. The doctor discusses the shape with you before the operation, taking your facial features into account. Transplanted hair grows for life: the beard can be trimmed and styled as usual.

I am sharing my experience, because before the operation I went through a pile of reviews myself and was looking for real stories. I had a beard transplant six months ago. Honestly, in the first days after the procedure I felt a little jittery: my face looked unfamiliar, there was slight swelling and small scabs. In the first couple of months the hair partly fell out, as the doctor had warned. But now the result truly makes me very happy) From about the 4th month active, even growth began. The transplanted hair took very well, the beard now looks as natural as possible, no bald patches are left. The beard became much thicker and denser, with the shape I had thought about for a long time. All in all, I recommend the clinic, the doctor was polite and explained everything 👍 The result is definitely worth it!

Frequent questions

Here is what people
ask before booking

People often say hair implants, but no artificial hair is used. In a hair transplant the doctor moves your own follicles (grafts) from the donor area to thinning or bald areas using FUE or DHI.

City Medical Centre doctors

Yes — City Medical Centre regularly treats patients from other cities and countries, starting with an online consultation.

The base prices are $2,200 (FUE), $2,500 (DHI) and $2,700 (combined). The precise cost is determined at a free consultation and graft count, then fixed in your contract.

The procedure is completed within a single day, after which you head home.

It helps with stable pattern hair loss and a receding hairline when there are enough donor grafts. Some types of alopecia need treatment first; the doctor checks this at the consultation.

It isn't painful: local anaesthesia is used throughout the surgery.

FUE is the classic method: grafts are harvested with tweezers, with no cuts or stitches. DHI implants grafts without channels, using a Choi pen. A combined method harvests grafts by FUE and implants them with the DHI pen.

The number of grafts is assessed for free by the doctor, based on how much donor hair you have.

First comes 0–10 days of healing, then shedding at 2–4 weeks (a normal stage). Growth starts at 3–4 months, density is clear by 6–9 months, and the final outcome shows at 12–18 months.

You get a lifetime hair growth guarantee, written into the contract.

Residents of Memphis: the procedure explained simply

Nothing about FUE and DHI changes for a patient in Memphis: no cuts, no stitches, local anaesthesia, and a single day for the operation itself. Graft survival is 98-100 %, and a price starting at $2,200 is fixed in the contract after a free graft count.

A resident of Memphis needs only a phone for the first step. The online consultation is free: the doctor looks at photos of the thinning area and counts the grafts. Contact is open 24/7, so the reply comes the same day.

Afterwards it goes like this: 0-10 days of healing, 2-4 weeks to the normal shedding of the transplanted hairs, 3-4 months to first growth, 6-9 to density and 12-18 to the final result. Check-ups at 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months, photos with a personal coordinator, growth guaranteed for life.

Questions from patients in Memphis

How does the doctor estimate my grafts online?

From photos you send in the chat: front hairline, top, crown and the back of the head (donor area). Add your age and any previous transplant; the graft count and the price follow from the review.

How far ahead should I plan a hair transplant?

If you want a visible result for a date, plan about a year ahead: growth starts at 3–4 months, thickens by 6–9 and is final at 12–18 months. Healing alone takes 0–10 days.

Is an online hair transplant consultation possible for patients in Memphis?

Yes, and it is free. You send your details and answer a few questions about your health; the doctor reviews them and explains the options and the cost.

How long is recovery after a hair transplant?

The transplant itself is a one-day procedure under local anaesthesia. Healing runs 0–10 days, and the doctor sets the check-ups.

How do I book a hair transplant for a date that suits me?

Message the coordinator with your preferred dates. The first consultation is free, and you can start it online; the clinic then confirms which dates are open, and only after that is anything booked.

All stories about this operation →

A river bluff, cotton money and the blues

Memphis stands on the Chickasaw Bluffs, high ground above the Mississippi that kept it clear of the river's regular floods. Hernando de Soto reached the area in 1541, almost three centuries before John Overton, James Winchester and the future president Andrew Jackson founded the city on 22 May 1819. River traffic and cotton made it one of the largest cities of the antebellum South, and it stayed a cotton and hardwood hub long after the Civil War.

Its nicknames carry that history: Bluff City for the geography, Home of the Blues and Grind City for the music. Memphis is also central to the civil rights story. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated there in 1968, and the Smithsonian-affiliated National Civil Rights Museum downtown keeps that history in plain view. The 2020 census counted 633,104 residents, and Beale Street and Graceland, Elvis Presley's long-time home, remain the city's best-known landmarks worldwide.

Sun Studio, Stax and a cargo hub

Sam Phillips' Sun Studio still stands and still runs tours. Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Roy Orbison all made their first records there, and the city's blues line runs back to W. C. Handy, often called the 'Father of the Blues'. A few miles away, Stax Records built a rawer, horn-heavy soul sound in the 1960s with Sam & Dave, Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett, backed by Booker T. and the M.G.'s, distinct from Detroit's Motown.

Beale Street, now a National Historic Landmark, is where Memphis blues went electric after the Second World War. The modern economy has a very different engine: FedEx runs its global air cargo hub from the city, which in 2021 overtook Hong Kong's to become the busiest facility of its kind in the world.

Gulf humidity, Plains cold fronts and a healing scalp

Memphis has a humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons, shaped by its place between the Great Plains and the Gulf of Mexico. Winter air can arrive from either direction, so the temperature can lurch from mild to bitter in a day; summer heat and humidity build up from the Gulf and push the July daily average to about 28°C. Severe spring storms occasionally bring large hail and tornadoes.

The detail matters for planning. Downtown sits in USDA hardiness zone 8a. January's daily average is about 5.6°C and snow is rare, around 7 cm a season, but ice storms and freezing rain are the bigger winter hazard, bringing down branches and power lines and making roads treacherous; there are about 43 nights a year below freezing. Summer air comes either from Texas, very hot and humid, or from the Gulf, hot and very humid, and about 64 days a year pass 32°C. Afternoon thunderstorms rarely last more than an hour. Early autumn is drier and milder, though it can stay hot until late October, and late autumn turns rainy again. The records are 42.2°C in July 1980 and -25°C in December 1963.

Whatever the Gulf sends, a transplanted scalp moves through the same five steps: crusts and puffiness settle within 0-10 days, the moved hairs shed at 2-4 weeks, fresh shafts break through at 3-4 months, thickness becomes obvious at 6-9 months, and the result is complete at 12-18 months.

The weather shapes only the first fortnight. Sticky July heat makes shade and a loose hat more important, and sweat is one more reason to follow the doctor's washing instructions to the letter. A January start trades humidity for the odd Plains cold front and sharp wind, and it places the 3-4 month growth phase in the spring storm season.

That makes early autumn a comfortable choice for the first fortnight: the humidity has eased, the ice-storm months are still ahead, and the 3-4 month growth phase then falls in winter, when a hat is part of everyday wear. An ice-storm forecast in the first days is a reason to stay home rather than risk a fall on a frozen pavement.

A medical district built around St. Jude

For its size, Memphis carries an unusual amount of hospital infrastructure. St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, conceived and built by entertainer Danny Thomas, opened in February 1962 as the first fully integrated children's hospital in the American South, and a new 16-storey research tower is now going up on its campus in the Pinch District.

Adult care runs largely through two private non-profit systems. Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare, the region's largest provider and its fourth-largest employer as of 2018, operates seven hospitals, among them the level 1 pediatric trauma centre at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital. Baptist Memorial Healthcare runs fifteen hospitals across the Mid-South, three of them in Memphis, and became the region's largest system after a 2018 merger. Regional One Health is the third major provider.

Methodist also runs Methodist University Hospital, a 617-bed facility about a mile from Le Bonheur, and the children's hospital has a nationally recognised pediatric brain tumour programme. The city's hospital history has a darker side too: until the end of segregation in the 1960s most hospitals served only white patients, and one of the few that treated Black Memphians, Collins Chapel Connectional Hospital, survives as a building that now houses a homeless shelter.

The University of Tennessee Health Science Center, founded in 1911 and classed among the country's highest-activity research universities, anchors the designated Medical District and trains much of the staff those systems depend on. It desegregated in the early 1960s, and its first Black graduate, Alvin Crawford, finished in 1964. Downtown is changing around it too: 100 North Main, the tallest tower in West Tennessee, is being redeveloped, and riverside Tom Lee Park reopened in 2023 with new courts and trails.

Checking a doctor in Tennessee, and what Medicare excludes

Every physician practising in Tennessee is licensed by the Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners, part of the state Department of Health, which keeps a public record showing whether a licence is active and unrestricted. That record outweighs anything on a clinic's own website, and checking it takes a few minutes.

Bring three questions to the consultation: how your donor zone will be evaluated, how many grafts it can realistically supply, and how regrowth will be checked over the next year. Precise answers say more about a team's experience than the price does.

Medicare's coverage guidance says it does not pay for most cosmetic surgery, since such procedures change appearance rather than treat a medical condition; the narrow exceptions, such as repairing an accidental injury, do not extend to a hair transplant chosen for its own sake. Most private US plans draw the same line, so the price set at the consultation, covering preparation, the procedure and months of follow-up, is the full cost whatever coverage a patient holds.

Insurance disputes in Tennessee have their own channel. The Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance runs a Consumer Insurance Services division to educate people about cover and resolve conflicts with insurers, and it also oversees TennCare, the state's Medicaid programme. That office, rather than the clinic, is where to turn if a plan's answer about any treatment seems wrong.

Can I get answers from Memphis before I decide?

Yes. A coordinator is on Telegram and WhatsApp day and night, and the donor area check and graft estimate cost nothing and come before any decision.

Does the Memphis summer make recovery harder?

The timeline stays the same, but humid heat and sweat make shade, a loose hat and careful washing more important in the first days.

Would a winter date be better?

Not medically. Winter avoids Gulf humidity in the first fortnight, though a cold front off the Plains can bring sharp wind instead.

My new hairs are falling out. Is that normal?

Yes. The moved hairs shed at 2-4 weeks, the follicles stay in place, and fresh growth breaks through at 3-4 months.

When does the thickness become noticeable?

Around 6-9 months; the outcome is judged as final at 12-18 months.

Where do I verify a Tennessee doctor's licence?

With the Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners, whose public record shows whether a licence is active and unrestricted.

Will Medicare or private insurance cover a hair transplant?

No. Medicare does not pay for surgery done to change how someone looks, and US private plans generally take the same line.

Is health care in Memphis mainly private?

Largely: Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare and Baptist Memorial Healthcare are big non-profit systems, with the University of Tennessee Health Science Center training much of their staff.
