What rhinoplasty cost depends on: the main factors

There is no single price for rhinoplasty, because no two noses need the same work. A quote is really an estimate of time, skill and resources for one specific operation.

Most of the difference between quotes comes from a handful of factors:

• The type of operation: closed, open, combined with septum correction, or revision.
• How much needs to change: a small hump is not the same as rebuilding the tip and the bridge.
• Medical indications: a deviated septum, past injury or breathing problems add steps.
• Grafts: whether cartilage has to be taken from the septum, the ear or a rib.
• What the package covers: tests, anaesthesia, hospital stay, dressings and follow-up visits.

The surgeon's experience also matters. Rhinoplasty is widely considered one of the most demanding operations in facial surgery, and a small error of a millimetre or two can be visible.

Type of surgery: closed, open, septorhinoplasty, revision

The technique chosen by the surgeon affects both the length of the operation and the price.

Revision surgery is generally planned no earlier than about a year after the first operation, once swelling has settled and the tissues have healed. It often needs cartilage grafts, sometimes from the ear or rib, because the septum may already have been used.

Complexity of your case and medical indications

Two primary operations can differ a lot. Removing a modest hump through a closed approach takes less time than narrowing a wide bridge, refining a bulbous tip and correcting asymmetry at the same time.

Factors that usually add complexity:

• thick or very thin skin, which changes how the new shape shows through;
• a crooked nose after an injury;
• a saddle nose or a collapsed bridge that needs support;
• a deviated septum, enlarged turbinates or other causes of blocked breathing;
• the need for cartilage grafts to support the tip or the bridge.

When comparing quotes, first check what each one covers. A lower figure sometimes leaves out items that you will pay for separately later.

A complete rhinoplasty package usually includes:

• the operation and the surgeon's work;
• general anaesthesia and the anaesthetist's care;
• result planning, often with a computer model of the new shape;
• an overnight hospital stay with meals;
• dressings, the nasal splint and consumables;
• follow-up visits, including splint removal;
• an aftercare programme and support from a coordinator.

Extra costs to plan for as a patient from abroad

If you travel for surgery, the clinic's quote is only part of the budget. Plan for:

• Flights for you and, ideally, a companion.
• Accommodation for about 7–10 days: the splint usually comes off after around a week, and the surgeon checks the nose before you fly.
• Travel insurance that covers planned medical treatment abroad, which standard policies often exclude.
• Time off work: most people return to office work after one to two weeks, but bruising may still be visible.
• Follow-up at home: later check-ups are often held online, but it helps to know a local doctor you can turn to.

It is also wise not to fly immediately after surgery and to avoid combining the trip with a beach holiday: sun, heat and swimming are best avoided in the first weeks.

Why the cheapest offer can cost more later

A very low price is not always a saving. It can mean a less experienced surgeon, a shorter stay, no anaesthetist in the room or no follow-up care included.

The real risk is a revision. Correcting an unsatisfactory result is more complex than a first operation, usually needs grafts and means another trip, another recovery and at least a year of waiting. Seen that way, choosing a clinic by price alone can end up the most expensive option.

Before deciding, check:

• who will actually perform the operation and how many rhinoplasties they do;
• where the surgery takes place and who monitors you during anaesthesia;
• what happens if a complication or a correction is needed;
• whether the final price is written into a contract.
