Liposuction: who is a good candidate, who is not, and why it is not a way to lose weight
Liposuction can reshape areas of stubborn fat very precisely, but the result depends heavily on who is having it. Weight, skin quality, health and expectations matter as much as the technique. This guide explains who usually benefits, which areas respond best, what is different for men, which conditions rule surgery out and what preparation and recovery involve.

The main points in 30 seconds
- Best results come at a stable weight with firm, elastic skin
- Liposuction shapes the body; it is not a way to lose weight
- Uncontrolled diabetes, clotting disorders and pregnancy are contraindications
- Compression is worn for about a month to six weeks
- The final contour is usually judged at around three months
Key facts about the procedure
- Operation time1–4 hours
- Back to work7–10 days
- Final result3–6 months
- Pricefrom $1,200
Who liposuction is for
Liposuction removes fat cells from chosen areas through small incisions using a thin tube called a cannula. It is a contouring operation: its purpose is to change proportions, not the number on the scales.
The typical good candidate:
- is at or close to a healthy, stable weight;
- has local fat deposits that stay despite a sensible diet and regular exercise;
- has firm, elastic skin that can shrink back after the fat is removed;
- is generally healthy and does not smoke, or is ready to stop before and after surgery;
- has realistic expectations and understands that the final shape takes months to appear.
Fat cells removed by liposuction do not grow back. If weight later increases, the remaining fat cells in all areas can enlarge, so a stable lifestyle is what keeps the result.
Areas that respond best
Liposuction works best where fat sits in a defined pocket under reasonably tight skin. Commonly treated areas include:
Abdomen and flanks
- Typical concern
- A rounded lower belly, “love handles”
- Comment
- Loose skin or separated muscles may need a tummy tuck instead
Outer and inner thighs
- Typical concern
- Saddlebags, inner thigh fullness
- Comment
- Very common, especially in women
Back and lower back
- Typical concern
- Rolls under the bra line or above the waist
- Comment
- Fat here is often dense and fibrous
Upper arms
- Typical concern
- Fullness at the back of the arm
- Comment
- Good results when the skin is firm
Chin and neck
- Typical concern
- Double chin
- Comment
- Small volumes, visible change
Knees
- Typical concern
- Fat on the inner side
- Comment
- Needs precise, careful work
Liposuction does not remove cellulite, stretch marks or loose skin, and it does not treat fat inside the abdomen around the organs.

Liposuction for men
Men tend to store fat on the abdomen, the flanks, the chest and under the chin. Male fat is often denser, so the surgeon may choose techniques that make removal gentler and more even.
An enlarged male chest (gynaecomastia) is a common reason to consult. It can be caused by fat, by glandular breast tissue or by both. Liposuction treats the fatty part well. Firm glandular tissue does not come out with a cannula; in general it is removed through a small surgical excision. Before any operation, the doctor also looks for medical causes of chest enlargement, such as hormonal changes or certain medicines.
Contraindications
Liposuction is not done, or is postponed, in a number of situations. The main ones are:
- age under 18;
- obesity caused by endocrine disease that is not yet treated;
- diabetes that is not controlled;
- blood clotting disorders or a history of blood clots without specialist review;
- serious heart, lung, kidney or liver disease;
- cancer;
- pregnancy and breastfeeding;
- severe chronic or mental illness.
Temporary reasons to delay include an acute infection, skin inflammation in the area to be treated, menstruation on the planned day and medicines that affect clotting, which must be reviewed with your doctor. Smoking does not always rule surgery out, but it raises the risk of poor healing.
Why liposuction is not a weight-loss method
Even in a large session only a limited amount of fat can be removed safely, because taking more increases the risk of fluid shifts, blood loss and other complications. For most people this means the change on the scales is small, while the change in shape can be marked.
Liposuction also does not reduce the fat around the internal organs, which is the type most linked to diabetes and heart disease. For significant obesity, weight loss through diet, activity, medical treatment or bariatric surgery comes first, and contouring can be considered once weight has been stable for some time. Many surgeons prefer patients to be within a moderate BMI range; the exact limit depends on your health and on the surgeon’s judgement.
Preparation and recovery overview
Before surgery
- A consultation with examination of the areas and a discussion of goals.
- Blood tests, clotting tests, infection screening, an ECG and, when needed, a chest X-ray or a GP review.
- Stopping medicines that affect clotting only as your doctor advises, avoiding alcohol and smoking beforehand, and not eating for several hours before anaesthesia.
After surgery
- Local or general anaesthesia, depending on the scope; with general anaesthesia an overnight stay is usual.
- Compression garments are worn for about a month to six weeks.
- Many people return to desk work within a few days to a week.
- Sauna, hot baths and intense sport are avoided for about a month.
- First changes are visible after a few weeks; the final contour is usually judged at around three months.
Possible risks include bruising, swelling, numbness, uneven contours, fluid collections and, rarely, infection or blood clots. More details are on our liposuction page.

Checking your suitability at City Medical Centre
City Medical Centre works with international patients. The clinic performs tumescent liposuction and VASER (ultrasound-assisted) liposuction. Other techniques you may read about, including separate gland removal for gynaecomastia, are general information in this article; which approach fits your case is discussed at the consultation.
The first consultation is free and can be held online. Send photos of the areas that bother you, tell us your height, weight, health conditions and medicines, and ask about the options. The surgeon assesses whether liposuction suits you and names the cost, which is then fixed in the contract. A personal coordinator supports you from your first message to the end of recovery, and questions can be sent by Telegram at any stage. Details are on the liposuction page.

Frequently asked questions
Am I a good candidate for liposuction?
You may be if your weight is stable and close to healthy, you have local fat deposits that resist diet and exercise, your skin is firm and you are in good general health. The surgeon confirms this after examining the areas and reviewing your medical history.
Is there a weight limit for liposuction?
There is no single number for everyone, but many surgeons prefer a moderate BMI and a stable weight. Liposuction is not designed for large weight loss, and the amount of fat removed in one session is limited for safety. The surgeon sets the limits for your case.
Can I have liposuction with diabetes?
Well-controlled diabetes does not always rule it out, but uncontrolled diabetes is a contraindication because it slows healing and raises the risk of infection. The surgeon looks at your recent results and may ask your endocrinologist for an opinion before deciding.
What is the minimum age for liposuction?
Cosmetic liposuction is performed on adults, from 18 years. By then the body has usually finished growing, and patients can give fully informed consent. Younger people are advised to wait until their figure has settled.
Can liposuction help with gynecomastia?
It helps when the enlargement is mainly fat. If firm glandular tissue is present, it generally has to be removed through a small excision, because a cannula cannot take it out. A doctor first checks for hormonal or medication-related causes.
