What did Linse Kessler say about her breast operations?

At a press event for a new season of “Familien fra Bryggen” in September 2017, Kessler told SE og HØR how much she had spent on her appearance: by her own calculation, 650,000 Danish kroner. Asked what the money had gone on, she said: “I have had facelifts a few times. I have had six or seven sets of breasts.”

According to the same interview, she had her breasts done for the first time at the age of 24, and her first operation dates back to 1991. She added about the total: “I have actually never gone around calculating how much money I have spent. But I have just sat down and worked it out.”

How breast augmentation is done today

Breast augmentation is performed under general anaesthesia and usually takes 1.5–3 hours, followed by one day in hospital. Implants are chosen together with the surgeon: silicone or saline, round or anatomical, smooth or textured, with the size and profile matched to the body and the desired result. When the breasts have also lost firmness, a lift may be combined with implants.

Who is a candidate and how to prepare

Augmentation is chosen for different reasons: small breasts, asymmetry, or volume lost after pregnancy and breastfeeding. After childbirth, the recommendation is to wait at least 6–12 months after the birth and after breastfeeding ends. Before surgery:

• blood tests, a clotting test and infection tests, an ECG, a chest X-ray and a breast ultrasound;
• stopping aspirin-type drugs, steroids and hormonal medication, including oral contraceptives at least a month before — only in agreement with the doctor;
• an honest discussion of expectations, implant type and size, and possible complications such as hematoma, seroma, infection, changes in nipple sensitivity, capsular contracture and asymmetry.

What recovery looks like

Moderate discomfort is normal for the first 1–3 days and eases a lot by day 5–7. Non-physical work is usually possible after 7–14 days and walks after 1–2 weeks. A compression garment is worn for 4–6 weeks; fitness and swimming return after 4–6 weeks and strength training after three months. Swelling settles in about a month, full recovery takes 3–6 months, scars fade over 6–12 months and sensitivity usually returns within 3–12 months.
