Double chin liposuction: how chin and neck fat removal works
A double chin can make the face look heavier and older, even in slim people. When it is caused by a pad of fat under the jaw, liposuction is one of the most direct ways to redefine the chin and neck. This article explains why a double chin appears, how the operation is done, what recovery looks like and when another procedure is a better fit.

The main points in 30 seconds
- A double chin can be caused by fat, loose skin, muscle bands or bone structure.
- Liposuction removes fat only and works best with firm, elastic skin.
- The operation is short, usually under local anaesthesia, through tiny incisions.
- A chin strap is worn during recovery; the final contour shows at about three months.
- Loose skin or muscle bands usually need a neck lift or a combined plan.
Key facts about the procedure

Why a double chin appears
The fullness under the jaw is usually made of several layers, and knowing which one dominates is the key to choosing the right treatment. The most common causes are:
- Fat under the skin. Some people store fat under the chin even at a normal weight, often because of genetics.
- Loose skin. With age or after weight loss the skin of the neck loses elasticity and starts to sag.
- Muscle bands. The thin neck muscle can separate and form vertical cords.
- Bone structure. A small or receding chin and a low position of the throat structures can make the neck look full.
Weight gain, posture and fluid retention can make the area look worse. Liposuction deals only with the first cause, fat, which is why the examination matters so much.
When surgery works better than cosmetic treatments
Massage, face exercises and hardware treatments may slightly improve skin tone, but they do not remove a real layer of fat. Fat-dissolving injections can reduce a small, soft deposit; they usually need several sessions and cause swelling after each one. Liposuction removes the fat in a single operation and allows the surgeon to shape the jawline precisely.
Fat-dissolving injections
- Best for
- Small, soft fat deposits
- Number of sessions
- Usually several
- Anaesthesia
- None or local
- Incisions
- None
- Downtime
- Swelling after each session
Chin liposuction
- Best for
- Moderate fat with good skin tone
- Number of sessions
- One operation
- Anaesthesia
- Usually local
- Incisions
- Tiny, hidden
- Downtime
- Often about a week
Neck lift
- Best for
- Loose skin and muscle bands
- Number of sessions
- One operation
- Anaesthesia
- Usually general
- Incisions
- Behind the ears and sometimes under the chin
- Downtime
- Usually two weeks or more
These are typical figures. Which option suits you is decided by the surgeon after an examination.
How chin and neck liposuction is done
The operation is usually short, often around an hour, and is typically done under local anaesthesia. The surgeon makes one or more tiny incisions, most often in the natural crease under the chin and sometimes behind the earlobes. These spots are chosen so that the marks are hard to see later.
First a special solution is injected into the fat. It numbs the area and narrows the small blood vessels, which reduces bleeding and bruising. Then a thin tube (cannula) is used to remove the fat evenly, leaving a smooth layer under the skin so that the neck does not look hollow. In some cases ultrasound is used to loosen the fat before it is removed, which helps in dense or fibrous areas.
After the procedure a compression chin strap is put on, and most patients go home the same day.
Recovery and the chin strap
The chin and neck usually heal quickly, but swelling needs time to settle. A typical course looks like this:
- First days: swelling, tightness and some bruising under the jaw; the chin strap is worn almost around the clock.
- First week: most people return to office work and daily life; the strap is still worn most of the day.
- Weeks two to four: the strap is often worn at night only; visible swelling fades.
- Around three months: residual swelling is gone and the final contour can be judged.
During recovery, sleep with your head slightly raised, avoid saunas, hot baths and intense sport for the first weeks, and follow the surgeon's advice on when to take off the strap. Temporary numbness or lumpiness under the skin is common and usually resolves on its own.

Results and how long they last
A successful operation gives a clearer angle between the chin and the neck and a sharper jawline. Because the removed fat cells do not grow back, the result usually lasts as long as your weight stays stable. Significant weight gain can still enlarge the remaining fat cells, and the skin continues to age naturally.
The skin usually shrinks to the new contour if it is elastic, which is why younger patients and people with good skin tone tend to get the neatest results. More about the procedure is on our liposuction page.
When a neck lift is needed instead
If the main problem is loose, hanging skin or visible muscle bands, removing fat alone can make the neck look worse, because the empty skin sags more. In that case a neck lift is usually considered: the surgeon removes excess skin and tightens the muscles through incisions behind the ears and sometimes under the chin.
Many patients have a mix of fat and loose skin. Then liposuction may be combined with a lift, or the surgeon may suggest another plan. A small or receding chin can also be part of the picture. This is why a proper assessment, not a photo alone, decides the treatment.

Chin liposuction at City Medical Centre
City Medical Centre works with international patients. The first consultation is free and can be held online: send photos of your face and neck from the front and in profile, tell the doctor about your health and weight changes, and ask whether liposuction suits your case. The doctor assesses your situation and names the cost, which is then fixed in the contract.
The clinic performs tumescent liposuction and VASER (ultrasound-assisted) liposuction, including the chin and neck; the surgeon chooses the method after examining you. If another approach would work better for you, the surgeon will say so at the consultation. A personal coordinator stays with you from your first message to the end of recovery, and photos and questions can be sent by Telegram. Find out more on the liposuction page.

Frequently asked questions
Does chin liposuction leave scars?
The incisions are only a few millimetres long and are usually placed in the crease under the chin and sometimes behind the earlobes. In most people they fade into barely visible marks over several months. How a scar heals depends on your skin, so the surgeon discusses this at the consultation.
How long does swelling last after chin liposuction?
Most visible swelling goes down within two to four weeks, and many people return to normal life after about a week. Mild residual swelling can last up to around three months, which is when the final contour is usually judged. Wearing the chin strap as advised helps it settle.
Can a double chin come back?
Removed fat cells do not grow back, so the result usually lasts while your weight is stable. Significant weight gain can enlarge the remaining fat cells, and the skin keeps ageing, so the neck may change over the years. A stable weight is the best way to keep the result.
Is chin liposuction better than fat-dissolving injections?
It depends on the amount of fat. Injections can reduce a small, soft deposit but usually need several sessions. Liposuction removes more fat in one operation and allows precise shaping of the jawline. The surgeon suggests the option that suits your anatomy after an examination.
Do I need a neck lift or liposuction?
Liposuction suits fat under firm, elastic skin. If the skin is loose or there are visible muscle bands, removing fat alone may make the neck look worse, and a neck lift or a combined plan is usually considered. The surgeon decides after assessing your skin, fat and muscles.
