Hair transplant in Turkey: what to check before you book abroad
Turkey has become one of the best-known destinations for hair transplants, and many people also compare clinics in other countries. Travelling for surgery can work well, but the decision deserves the same care as any operation at home. This guide explains what an attractive package price may leave out, which costs appear later, how to find out who actually performs the procedure, what safety checks matter and what should be written in the contract before you buy a ticket.

The main points in 30 seconds
- Choose a clinic abroad on facts, not on the lowest advertised price.
- Add up flights, hotels, tests, medicines, extra grafts and follow-up before comparing.
- Find out who designs the hairline and performs the key steps.
- A responsible clinic checks your health and protects the donor area.
- The contract should state the method, graft count, total price and aftercare.

What to check before booking a hair transplant abroad
A hair transplant is surgery, even when it is advertised as a quick trip with sightseeing. The result grows for about a year and is meant to last, so the choice of clinic matters more than the choice of hotel. Before you book, it helps to have clear answers to a short list of questions:
- who will assess your hair loss and confirm that a transplant is the right option;
- who will plan the hairline and perform the key steps of the operation;
- how many grafts are planned and how the donor area will be protected;
- what is included in the price and what will be charged separately;
- how aftercare and follow-up work once you are back home;
- what the written contract says about all of the above.
Good clinics exist in many countries, including Turkey. The aim is not to avoid travel but to choose a clinic on facts rather than on the lowest figure in an advert.
Why low prices attract patients and what they may leave out
Package prices abroad can look much lower than elsewhere, and that is the main reason people travel. Part of the difference comes from local costs, but a very low price can also mean the clinic saves on things you cannot see in a brochure:
- several patients operated on in one day by the same team, with less time per person;
- key steps handed to technicians rather than a doctor;
- a fixed graft number sold to everyone instead of a plan based on your donor area;
- minimal screening before surgery and little contact afterwards.
Heavy over-harvesting is a particular concern. The donor area at the back of the head is limited, and grafts taken too densely can leave it visibly thin and reduce options for any future procedure. A clinic that explains how many grafts your donor area can safely provide is usually more trustworthy than one that promises a large number up front.

Hidden costs: flights, hotels, consultations and follow-up
The advertised price is rarely the full cost of the trip. It is worth adding up everything before comparing clinics:
- Flights and transfers
- Are airport transfers included, and what if the date changes?
- Accommodation
- How many nights are needed, and who pays for extra days?
- Tests before surgery
- Are blood tests and the medical check included?
- Medicines and supplies
- Are dressings, washing products and prescribed medicines included?
- Additional grafts
- Is the price per graft or per session, and what happens if more grafts are needed?
- Follow-up
- How are check-ups arranged after you return home?
- Time off work
- How many days of rest are recommended after the procedure?
Another hidden cost is the chance of needing care at home if something goes wrong. Health services in your own country may treat complications, but a corrective procedure elsewhere is usually paid privately. Knowing in advance how the clinic handles problems after you leave is part of the real price.
Who actually performs the procedure
This is the most important question and often the hardest to answer from a website. In a transplant, the doctor should assess the diagnosis, design the hairline, decide on the graft number and perform or directly supervise the critical steps. Some clinics let assistants carry out most of the work, and patients sometimes meet the surgeon only briefly or not at all.
Ways to check:
- ask for the name of the doctor who will operate and their medical qualifications;
- ask which steps the doctor performs personally and which are done by the team;
- ask how many procedures the team performs on the same day;
- ask for a video or in-person consultation with the doctor, not only with a sales manager;
- be cautious if the answers are vague or change when you ask again.
Before-and-after photos are useful only if they show the same lighting and angles, the result at twelve months and cases similar to yours.
Safety, hygiene and medical screening
A hair transplant is usually done under local anaesthesia, but it still requires a sterile operating room, trained staff and a basic medical check. Before surgery, a responsible clinic asks about your general health, current medicines, previous surgery and allergies, and arranges blood tests. Conditions such as uncontrolled diabetes, serious heart disease, blood clotting problems, infections and some skin diseases of the scalp may need attention first or can rule surgery out.
Things to look for:
- the clinic is licensed as a medical facility, not only as a beauty salon;
- instruments are sterile or single use, and the room is prepared as an operating room;
- you are told how pain relief works and what to do in an emergency;
- the plan takes into account the flight home, since long flights soon after surgery need some precautions.
A clinic that agrees to operate on anyone who pays, without questions about health or the cause of hair loss, is a warning sign.
Contract, graft count and aftercare terms
A written contract protects both sides and makes comparisons easier. Before paying, check that it states clearly:
- the method that will be used and the planned number of grafts, or how the final number will be confirmed;
- the total price and exactly what it includes;
- who will perform the procedure;
- what aftercare is provided, including follow-up checks and how they happen remotely;
- what happens if the date changes or the plan has to be adjusted on the day;
- how to contact the clinic after you return home and who answers.
No honest clinic can promise a specific density, because growth depends on the donor area, hair type and healing. Be careful with bold promises and look instead for clear terms and a realistic explanation of the expected result.

Getting a personal plan at City Medical Centre
City Medical Centre works with international patients and performs hair transplants using FUE, DHI and a combined FUE and DHI protocol under local anaesthesia. FUE is used for androgenetic alopecia; the combined FUE and DHI protocol for androgenetic alopecia and for densification. The clinic also offers beard and eyebrow transplants, PRP therapy for the scalp and trichopigmentation.
City Medical Centre does not perform FUT strip surgery and does not operate in alopecia areata, which is first treated by a dermatologist. The first consultation is free and can be done online: send photos of the thinning area and the donor zone, and the doctor will assess them, count the grafts and say whether a transplant will help. The cost is quoted after the assessment and fixed in the contract, preparation and follow-up checks at 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months are part of the plan, and a personal coordinator stays in touch throughout. Photos and questions can be sent via Telegram. Read more on the hair transplant page.

Frequently asked questions
Is a hair transplant in Turkey safe?
It can be, when the clinic is a licensed medical facility, a qualified doctor assesses you and performs or supervises the key steps, and your health is checked before surgery. The risks come mainly from rushed, high-volume work, poor hygiene and over-harvesting of the donor area. Checking these points matters more than the country itself.
Why are hair transplants abroad so cheap?
Lower local costs explain part of the difference. A very low price can also mean many patients per day, key steps done by technicians, a standard graft number for everyone and little aftercare. Ask what exactly the price includes and who performs the work before comparing figures.
What hidden costs come with a hair transplant abroad?
Common extras are flights, extra hotel nights, tests before surgery, medicines and washing products, additional grafts and time off work. Care for any complication after you return home is usually paid separately. Adding these up gives a more honest comparison than the package price alone.
How do I check who will perform my transplant?
Ask for the name and qualifications of the operating doctor, which steps they do personally and how many procedures the team performs on the same day. Insist on a consultation with the doctor rather than only a sales manager. Vague or changing answers are a reason to look elsewhere.
Is the graft count fixed in the contract?
It should be written in the contract, either as a planned number or with a clear rule for how the final number is confirmed after the doctor examines the donor area. The contract should also state the total price, what it includes, who operates and how follow-up is arranged.
