What is liposuction
and who is it for?

As a surgical method, liposuction removes surplus fat beneath the skin in problem areas. Don't treat it as weight loss or as a substitute for diet and exercise: its purpose is targeted contouring, removing saddlebags on the thighs, a drooping belly and fat on the back, flanks, arms or chin.

Good candidates have a normal weight and an active lifestyle, yet certain zones keep their fat. The essential point is that fat cells removed from treated areas never grow back — keep your lifestyle steady and the result lasts long.

Liposuction techniques at City Medical Centre

Tumescent (classic) liposuction

The treatment area is first injected with a special solution of saline, lidocaine, adrenaline and several other agents. This loosens the fat and narrows the vessels, so blood loss is minimal and removal is gentle. Next, the fat emulsion is vacuumed out through a thin cannula.

Almost no swelling or bruising follows the surgery, and recovery is much lighter than after a conventional procedure.

VASER liposuction (ultrasound)

Before vacuum removal, ultrasound breaks the fat cells down. This makes the method ideal for body contouring and for defining pronounced muscle relief, i.e. athletic abs.

It also suits delicate areas.

How the surgery goes: from consultation to result

Surgeon consultation

The doctor takes note of your wishes, examines you, evaluates the fat deposits and excludes contraindications. At City Medical Centre we also order hormonal screening to help predict the long-term result.

Pre-operative tests

Pre-op tests: blood (complete count, coagulation panel, biochemistry, infections — HIV, hepatitis, syphilis), ECG, chest X-ray and, if needed, a GP consultation.

All tests can be done at the clinic with no waiting.

Preparation

Stop any medications affecting blood clotting 2 weeks before; stop alcohol and smoking a week before for quicker healing; eat for the last time 8 hours before.

Surgery day

On the day you meet the surgeon, the areas are marked and compression garments fitted. Anesthesia — local or general, depending on the scope.
Lasts from 1 hour (small areas) to 3–4 hours (a combined procedure).

Waking up and monitoring

Patients under general anesthesia stay one day in hospital for observation, while those under local anesthesia leave 3–4 hours after surgery.

Recovery

Compression garments are needed for 30–45 days. In 3–4 weeks the swelling subsides and first results appear; the final result is assessed at 3 months with the skin fully tightened.

Recovery after liposuction

Tumescent liposuction means a much shorter recovery than a conventional procedure. Within 3–7 days most patients are working again. In week one there may be mild swelling and a raised temperature, which is a normal reaction to surgery. Compression garments are needed for 30–45 days: they fix the new contours and help tissues recover faster. Bathhouse, sauna, pool and intense sport are not allowed for the first month. Lymphatic drainage massage, pressotherapy and a gradual return to activity are recommended for the best result and faster recovery. First changes show in 3–4 weeks, the final result at 3 months.

Liposuction: frequently asked questions

Liposuction in Pietermaritzburg: from consultation to result

Liposuction is minimally invasive: fat is removed through micro-incisions of just a few millimetres that usually need no stitches and become barely visible once healed. Before surgery the surgeon assesses skin tone and elasticity, because firm skin tightens on its own along the new contours. If you are considering liposuction in Pietermaritzburg with stretch marks or reduced tone, preparatory treatments may be recommended.

Preparation follows a simple schedule. Two weeks before surgery, medications that affect blood clotting are stopped; a week before, alcohol and smoking are cut out for faster healing; the last meal is eight hours before the operation. On the day itself, the surgeon meets you, marks the areas and fits compression garments. This is the routine for everyone in Pietermaritzburg.

Liposuction starts from $1,200 (≈ R20,500) for a single area, and the final figure is calculated individually after an examination. For patients from Pietermaritzburg, the price is fixed in the contract with no hidden extras, and interest-free instalments are available. The first consultation with the surgeon is free: leave your name and phone number, and a coordinator will contact you to book it.
