Breast Augmentation in Tokyo: Cost and Recovery

The term mammoplasty covers several operations: augmentation (implants to increase volume), reduction (excess tissue and skin removed), mastopexy (a lift for sagging), reconstruction (after mastectomy) and correction of asymmetry. Which method is best is decided individually, from your wishes and the surgeon's advice.

Complications are rare when recommendations are fully followed, yet they can include hematoma or seroma, wound infection, reduced or increased nipple sensitivity, capsular contracture, aesthetic asymmetry, separation of the wound and tissue necrosis.

The results of mammoplasty are long-lasting: roughly 10–15 years after augmentation (until the implants are replaced) and 5–10 years after a lift or reduction. Weight, pregnancy, skin aging and gravity all influence how long they last. Wearing supportive underwear and managing your weight help maintain the result.

Breastfeeding after mammoplasty depends on the procedure. Augmentation through an under-breast or armpit incision with a submuscular implant usually keeps lactation intact, since glandular tissue is not damaged. With a lift or reduction the risk is higher, because ducts may be cut. Be sure to discuss this with your surgeon in advance.

The choice of implant looks at material (silicone looks most natural, while saline is used less often), shape (round or anatomical teardrop), surface (smooth or textured), size and profile. The surgeon will choose what works best for your anatomy and wishes.

General anesthesia is used for the surgery itself, so there is no sensation. In the first 1–3 days you may feel moderate discomfort, which painkillers relieve. Pain subsides significantly by day 5–7 and discomfort is gone by weeks 2–3. If pain becomes severe, inform your doctor right away.

Most patients return to work (without physical exertion) after 7–14 days. Light walks are fine after 1–2 weeks. Fitness and swimming come after 4–6 weeks, strength training after 3 months, pool and sea after 4–6 weeks. Compression garments are worn for 4–6 weeks. Exact timing depends on your recovery.

There is no scientific basis for saying mammoplasty raises breast cancer risk. Implants do not cause cancer. Post-surgery, maintain regular screening with self-exams, mammography and ultrasound, and always inform the examining doctor that you have implants.

Mammoplasty can follow a C-section, but first your body must fully recover. Allow a minimum of 6–12 months from giving birth and from the end of breastfeeding. Before surgery, a consultation and check-up with the surgeon are required.

Mammoplasty always leaves scars, though with a skilled surgeon they are minimal. The incisions are hidden under the breast, around the areola or in the armpit. Scars are reddish in the early months but fade within 6–12 months and become almost invisible.

Slight asymmetry is normal in the first weeks after surgery and comes from swelling and uneven healing. When a difference in shape or size lasts beyond 3–6 months, visit your surgeon for an examination to pinpoint the cause.

After mammoplasty, sensitivity of the nipples and breasts may change for a while, becoming lower or higher. This is due to irritation of the nerve endings. In most cases sensitivity comes back within 3–12 months. If nothing improves after a year, see your surgeon.

Hormonal drugs (contraceptives, hormone replacement therapy) do not affect implants themselves, but they can cause swelling or a change in breast tissue volume that alters the appearance for a time. Always inform your surgeon about them ahead of surgery.
