The term mammoplasty covers several operations: augmentation (implants to increase volume), reduction (excess tissue and skin removed), mastopexy (a lift for sagging), reconstruction (after mastectomy) and correction of asymmetry. Which method is best is decided individually, from your wishes and the surgeon's advice.

Complications are uncommon if every recommendation is followed, but possible ones include hematoma or seroma, wound infection, lower or higher nipple sensitivity, capsular contracture, aesthetic asymmetry, wound separation and tissue necrosis.

The effect of mammoplasty lasts for years: about 10–15 years after augmentation (until the implants are replaced) and 5–10 years after a lift or reduction. Duration depends on weight, pregnancy, skin aging and gravity. Supportive underwear and a stable weight help the result last.

Breastfeeding after mammoplasty depends on the type of surgery. With augmentation through an under-breast or armpit incision and the implant placed under the muscle, lactation is usually preserved — the glandular tissue is not damaged. Science offers no evidence that mammoplasty increases breast cancer risk. Implants are not a cause of cancer. After the operation, keep having regular screening: self-exams, mammography and ultrasound. Make sure the examining doctor always knows about your implants.

After a caesarean section, mammoplasty is possible once full recovery is complete. At least 6–12 months must pass after the birth and after breastfeeding ends. A surgeon's consultation and check-up must take place before surgery.

Yes, mammoplasty leaves scars, but they are minimal when the surgeon is skilled. The incisions are made in concealed areas, under the breast, around the areola or in the armpit. For the first months scars are reddish, then within 6–12 months they fade and become barely visible.

A little asymmetry in the early weeks after the operation is normal, due to swelling and uneven healing. If the shape or size still differs after 3–6 months, have your surgeon examine you to determine the cause.

Nipple and breast sensitivity can change temporarily after mammoplasty, either decreasing or increasing. It happens because nerve endings are irritated. Sensitivity usually returns within 3–12 months. If there is still no improvement after a year, consult your surgeon.

Hormonal drugs (contraceptives, hormone replacement therapy) do not affect implants directly, but may cause swelling or changes in breast tissue volume, temporarily affecting appearance. Be sure to tell your surgeon about such medications before surgery.
